Not just the non-standardized learning environment (though I do see the value in it for those unable to learn in a more traditional manner), but also because most of them ARE crazy she-bitches. I think there's a note of radical feminism in the theology that mixes with a sense of entitlement most of them seem to have that drives 'em nuts.

And honestly, all but the extremely academic aspects, the pure research stuff, can be done and done better and more efficiently with a smidgen of divination or fate manipulation and a healthy dose of kinetomancy.

The research aspect is interesting, but no more so than any other field of study.

Nothing even close to a true barbarian. Nobody could look at the one called "Fabio" and say "I think that is Gornod Frost-Iron!" without laughing, nor could they look at me and think I was that womanly-haired fool. It's really not much different from a normal university. It just has a more religious bent to it. And since the temple reveres knowledge, it feeds back into the university style. And teaching priests are allowed to teach as they please so long as the casualty rate's low and they show results. So you get a good mix of teaching styles, the majority of which tend toward traditional lecture and directed instruction.

Not a "hovel", really, but yes, my clan has a shaman and two farseers as her apprentices. She communes with the spirits of nature, the elements, and the ancestors, and interprets dreams and visions to help in guiding our clan. Otherwise, outside of religious matters like that, magic is not terribly prominent for my people as a whole, much less the regulated and elaborate complex rituals being discussed by these others.

I am not "anti-magic", I just fail to see the point in making it all so complicated and measured and detail-focused, when the old ways of primal magicks seem to work perfectly fine, from my experience.

The way my master explained it to me...
"There are, at the very least, one Prime Material Plane, three Transitive Planes, six elemental planes, and seventeen Outer Planes, and potentially dozens to hundreds of thousands of each. Magic is drawn from these other planes, no matter its school or method, and understanding the nature of the planes is thus vitally important if you do not wish to suffer unexpected and unpredictable effects in your magic. What good is a healing spell if you draw from too strong of a Positive Energy sphere and cause the poor soul to explode? What good is a fire spell drawn from a plane of heatless fire? Theory and practicality in planar research are inextricably linked; understanding the planes is understanding magic, understanding magic is controlling magic, and controlling magic is power at its purest."
He was...a bit of a blowhard, but a good teacher.

Just got back from an exam in Dark Ranger 101, it's an advanced class. Apparently there use to be an age limit on entering. Silly Elves they're really the slowest learners, they seriously take 20 years to learn something that should take 2 years?

Anyway, the teacher tried to harp on me about "using weapons of steel and iron". She believed that I should be using a bow, or in dare straights a crossbow. She gave me a F because I didn't do it "properly".

What BS was this? I bested everyone in the exam. We had to summon bunch of skeletons, cast some basic curses, channeled through our weapons. The time was given was 3minutes. I did it all in 1.5 minutes, and doubled the distance.

I'm taking this up with the dean of Dark Arts and Dean of Engineering. I should have the right to have a firearm instead of a bow.

His words are just words, and needlessly long.

The shaman knows this - to heal the sick and wounded, you speak to the healing spirits of nature, for nature is full of gifts to those who seek it. For luck in battle, ask the blessing of the ancestors that when you fight, their might is with you. To order the snow and wind and rain to cease, or to call down the thunderbolts or draw up the flames to protect us from enemies, the spirits of the elements are to be pursued and tamed.

That is enough for us, why muddy it with the same thing said by too many words?

Frankly, the reputation barbarians have for wild magic says they -don't- always understand magic as well as they should. Wild Magic is always the result of someone accidentally or deliberately calling power from the wrong places, and it happens disturbingly often among barbarian peoples.

I don't know what I'm gonna do guys. I've been attending Greenvale Community College to get my basic rogue certification, because I didn't have the experience point average to get into a better technical college, but yesterday I saw Vice-Dean Laybourne threatening to split the Use Magical Item Annex from the rest of the school! They probably are. They hold their secrets dearly and only give them to the ones they chose to replace them.
This way, only they know how to harness magic in the barbarian tribes, and keep their power and respect. If their secrets were known by the common men of your tribes, the shamans would be nothing, and they fear that.

Necromancers are a bit more reasonable. They tend to have a...odd sense of humor, and they're a 'black major', but they're all in it together, for this life and the next.
Personally, I suggest conjuration and transmutation, and Planar Studies, but then, those are my major and minors.

Unfortunately, in most tribal societies, that is exactly the case. And shamanic magic CAN be taught to anyone. Even you. Some may have more or less talent for it, or more or less desire for it, but that doesn't stop you from actually learning it. Spiritual blessings do not a shaman make, nor do shamen automatically have the blessing of the spirits. There are a few studies of evil shamen who bent the spirits to their will, rather than offer themselves in supplication or even offer a bargain with 'em.

Most often, the shaman not telling you things is because they just aren't interested in teaching, and most tribal members aren't interested in learning what they have to teach. In a lot of cases, this turns into a power game, and ends up with them quietly running the tribe.

Not saying that's the case with your people, just that this is most often the case with tribal societies.

So just got back from talking to the deans of the Dark Arts and Engineering. They're making me the very first professor of Gun Mage 1332. I asked who the dean would be. It'll be under both Dean of Magic & Dean of Engineering.

They state if I'm alive at the end of my tenure, I have chance of becoming Dean of Gun Magic. My class will be how to teach young Gun Mages, the art of dueling.

I asked why me? It was apparently the only possession they could think of. Also it was a way to keep the archery folks happy. The pay's not bad, I'm getting 12k a year. I'm told I'm allowed 5 months paid vacation.

Looked at the roster and so far only 14 gun mages in the entire school. Next year they're apparently getting as many as 100. I guess it's becoming a major problem.

Necromancy is saturated. There are just a lot of necromancers because of that "live over death" thing that they use to have. Good necromancers are hard to find.
Alienism is kinda cool. However, somehow you begin to realize that everything is connected to ancient aliens, and not everybody can deal with that. Also, there aren't many job opportunities because the oracles can read the stars pretty well.
Probability Magic is the shit these days. However, there is a 50% of chance of non-existence, and most of the people working there have critical existence failures from time to time, but it's like Wild Magic, with a little bit of science in there. Or not. Also, for some reason they all hate cats...

Neither of those, he went by the moniker of "Vair the Wise", lives in an isolated tower in the Blueleaf Forest near the village of Viridian Hills. He's a planar specialist and a conjurer, has a lot of theories about how all magic is planar-based and that infinite power is available by tapping the right plane at the right time. He thinks wild magic is people intentionally or incompetently tapping semi-random planes with their spells.

Wild Magic affords an incredible amount of power hoisted on a short and fragile leash. It's magic for nervy, quick-witted wizards and it is unsuited to long-term spell layering and calculation. That doesn't make it invalid. Wild Mages tend to be excellent problem solvers and investigators because they always have to be two steps ahead of everything, even their own magic.

A Fateweaver is backup, a controller to hold off the worst effects of an uncontained Wild Magic eruption. It's still a team of two halves. If it weren't for the stigma and yellow journalism surrounding the research of Wild Magic, we'd probably see a lot less Fateweavers in those units.

No one built a legend off of a man who simply did what he was told and accepted what he was told. Heroes are those who defy that which restricts them, and who fight with the mind, the soul, and body as one. Right now, you fight with soul and body, but leave the mind to rot. That makes you a good warrior, but a poor hero. So do you want to be a great man, or merely an acceptable one?

That is not where my doubt lies. It lies in the idea of forsaking my strength of body for strength of magic. Never have I seen a sorceror who was not powerful in he arcane-weavings that was not slim of arm and frail of body. I fear this weakness. If the cost of magic is a reliance upon it, if its use means I can no longer lift my sword or draw a bow, then to hell with your wizardry! I do not wish to see myself grow withered and infirm until every last hair on my head goes from brown as the new-turned earth to white as the snow on Cruach's great mountain, and maybe even then I will fight to retain my strength from being claimed by the passing of years. A war-mage is a magician who focuses on magic as a way to boost battlefield prowess, either by enhancing his natural strength via spells, or using mighty, destructive evocations to bring enemies down in droves.
A battle-sorcerer is similar, but less refined, preferring swift, rapid-fire chains of spells to a single mightier spell. They usually prefer buffs rather than evocations. Some also learn the art of conjuration, to summon allies, either spirit or outsider, to assist them.
Both are available to a warrior who wants to learn to enhance himself with magic.

It's simple: they're fighters that boost themselves in battle with a magic school of your choice. Obviously, some studying from books is required for the magic part, that part is inseparable. Don't despair, the campus is well equipped for the physical training.

Knowing you, you'd have to prove your physical strength once and then just attend the magical classes.

A single man on the battlefield, calling up death to his foes and protecting his allies, both with spell and blade alike... This is a thing unknown to my people, so I shall not approach it uncautiously.

Did you know that your innate ability to Rage is in itself magic?

Emotions converted into power are arguably the oldest form of magic in existence; the Barbarian (as opposed to the barbarian) is simply one who has honed one particular emotion to a razor-sharp point and wields it against their enemies.

But rage, while powerful, is merely one emotion, and there are certain things for which other emotions are more effective. Fear, sorrow, love, joy, determination, regret, belief... all of these things have their own power, and their own uses when channeled through your body and soul.

    My 2 magical cents.
Any human strong enough can bend reality to their will without magic. I have seen warriors strong enough to punch death in the face and send her back to her cottage (a nice one on the woods, if I'm allowed to say so) when she was coming for them. I have seen warriors going through hell with the only objective to bring their beloved ones back to the realm of the living. I have seen warriors fighting forces of nature and winning, and I have seen masked warriors making monsters explode with one well-placed kick.
Just train hard enough until you reach perfection, and even our ephemeral lady of magic will be able to bend to your power.

    That's what I plan.

Also we've had our first death today. Poor sod, no one taught him not to look down a barrel of a loaded gun. He misfired and before I could stop him, he looked down his barrel and shot himself.

On the bright side, they found about 100 gun-mages from another campus. Since I'm the only gun-mage professor in the school system, they're sending all the gun-mages here.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to teach these fools how to shoot. Most these poor saps have little more than cantrips under their belt. Honestly, what's with these kids? I know that it's an inborn ability much like Sorcery, and you have to hone it. However it's like their parents threw them into the nearest magical college when sparks come from their fingers.

Starting next week, in real time, I think we'll be ready to start our first adventure. It would seem that majority of the students never owned a gun. I found out that Gun-magic is now listed under the Liberal Arts for Archers.

    Seriously? Who put that there?

I see what you're saying, but you're ignoring a very important part: Like >>16512428 said, that very focus and power is, itself, magic in its purest, most primal form. Why do you think even the strongest archmages can only cast so many spells in a day? They're using their own energies as catalysts. Their emotions, their lifeforces... That's the most essential component of magic. That's why you hear about those fighters who can turn their emotions into an outward blast of pure energy. It's the same energy that you describe, just focused outward at an enemy rather than inward.

Willpower is the most basic and long-lasting of emotions, actually. You could also call it determination, or stubbornness, or any number of other things.

You see, you can still survive without other emotions. Potentially without ANY other emotions, actually, although such an existence is rather unfulfilling. But without willpower? You die. At best, your body keeps running for a while after your mind goes away.

It's also why the original zombies weren't shambling things puppeteered by necromancers; they were people who refused to die so strongly that their sheer willpower brought them back. They're very rare, but there are still a few of them around today.

Why is everybody so fond on the study of death? Death is just a chemical state. A process. Something totally avoidable. If a living being is a machine, a dead being is just a broken machine that can be fixed.
Studies about life are woefully underrated. While Wizards cheat death using arcane energy, Clerics avoid death by praying to their gods, and Necromancers just revive dead beings, nobody seems to care about life, except for Druids, but they are doing it wrong, because their philosophy deals with the balance, they don't harness the power of life itself.
Death is just way more popular than Life, and that's why us Biomancers are so underrated. But which respectable Wizard would want to specialize in life after all...

Hey, Warforged have had souls for quite a while now. Heck, ripping out a chunk of your soul is part of making them. Makes it dangerous as hell, and you can only have one warforged to a transplant. A crafter can make many warforged, but he can only make one warforged per person willing to split off a small piece of their soul.

I'm sure there's a way to mass produce them, but I haven't been taught that way.

I have seen such things, though rarely, in my travels.

What difference is there between them and common golems, save that one is driven by a bound human soul instead of a bound elemental spirit?

I do not trust such magicks. The soul should be no man's plaything.

Gun Mage 1332 & 101, ran by a new teacher. Expert Gun-Mage that uses a Shotgun.

Archery Major ran by technophobic Elves, only Bows & Xbows.

Major rivalry between Biomancers & Necromancers. Biomancers have an Awakened Giant Bee Queen for a professor.

Deans are completely insane, and are completely out of touch with reality.

School is on 4 planes and 6 demiplanes.

Because Biomancers tend to be of the 'hahaha! I'll show them, I'll show them all!' variety, whereas Necromancers are a bit more staid and sedate comparitively. True, they're also pretty bugnuts, they're usually quieter about it. Wielding negative energy also helps people take them more seriously.

Mad Science, while attractive, is also BAD Science, since it means no one but you can benefit from your findings, if you bother to write them down at all.

    >>16512973
No they didn't, you just took offense to what they said. All that was really said by them was 'think about it'. I've shown you nothing but courtesy, even defended and explained certain behaviours of yours, and you've dumped on academics and academia alike. I get that you find pure research a waste of time. I do. But my ways are no less valid than yours, since I have willingly chosen them, just as you have.

The difference is that I know the alternatives offered to me, and I chose this one, whereas you have blindly refused anything outside of your own sphere of experience. This makes you a very poor student, and an even worse man.

A real man wouldn't shy away from a new experience just because it's foreign to him. Man up, bro, and try it out.

We've also got a pretty decent idea of what the campus is like. No actual layout, but certain buildings and campus legends/stories. On the broader side of things, we know that necromancy isn't automatically evil, and even lichdom can be okay most of the time, we've got a decent blend of magic and tech thanks to Gun Mage, which gives us some idea of what the greater setting may be like, and we even have a couple of barbarian tribes that the greater community trades with and occasionally sends people to live with.

Black majors aren't frowned upon, they're just more focused inward than other majors. They're also incredibly dangerous and highly regulated, though practitioners of them tend not to care about pesky things like 'law' and 'order' and 'sentient rights', and so on. Power at all costs is the most often cited motto of black majors.

Which is a shame, since they could do so much good for everyone else. Maybe it's why I gave up on trying Evil out and drifted right back to Neutral.

With the usual views on liches, it would be kind of natural to go the Harry Potter route and make a powerful lich the BBEG of your Magic School campaign. The "otherness" serves well to make the villain unique in the setting. In a setting where half the necromancy students become liches as a final exam, though, it wouldn't work as well.

Go out there and discover new shit, and learn new things, and find out just what those crazy scholars are talking about. And if it still doesn't strike your fancy then at least you've made an educated decision, rather than a blind one.

And if you need an example to help further you along, then let me tell you about my good friend Gorgorogorca Goresmash Bloodcrusher the Smasher. Yes. That is his real name. Yes, he hates it.

Gorgorogorca is ten feet tall and made of biceps. He can bench press two thirds of the university staff at the same time, and only barely break a sweat. He is a minotaur, and has a deep reverence for nature and the spirits, and talks often about them.

He's also a massive theatre nerd. He's constantly quoting from plays he's read, and poems he's heard, and is a regular at the coffee house on Thursday nights for recitals. He's... well he's got a good voice, at least, but he's trying to be an actor, and is working to get a serious role that doesn't involve lifting things over his head and bellowing.

Just like my friend (the bro-est of bros) you don't have to submit yourself to minutiae and pure research or anything. You can learn whatever you want, so long as you DO learn. If you want, if you come up here, I'll set you up in Agricultural Studies for a semester, or maybe you can work as a student aide in Basic Hunting Practices, or tutor Tribal Humanoid Studies.

Well, have somebody you really trust (or more likely a preprogrammed servitor) do it anyway. That moment between the erasure of an old stat and the writing of a new one puts your existence in some sort of a flux state, neither real nor unreal, which is a bad thing when it means you can no longer actually fill out the empty spot on your charsheet and thus resolve your existence.

Just got back from teaching Gun Mage 101, the class is going well. We have mostly Humans and Dwarves, a few Half-Elves, even one Half-Orc. So far most the deaths have been from accidents, which only Humans seem to be involved.

While in Gun Mage 1332, things are different. As it's a more difficult class, I demand more. I've had no less than 10 assassination attempts, far less than I've suspected. Also these attempts were very sloppy and very weak. This class is mainly Humans, and Half-Humans. They all think they're bad asses because they killed a few goblins, perhaps won a few duels.

I've been around the block a few times, I've faced dragons and demons. Here they are barely out their first adventure, and they think they're big man on campus. I've faced baby trolls that are more dangerous.

Ogres are admitted under the Shaman studies. It's not really complicated magic, it's more DIY type. I've spoken to a few the facility in the teacher's lounge. They explained it as this, thanks to corporate bureaucrats and left winged politics we have to open enrollment to every creature.

If they don't possess intelligence or sorcery abilities they're put in the Shaman area. There they can choose from a multitude of different Shaman techniques. One the more popular ones today is communicating to the elements and trying to do what you want.

Mind you it's not the same as talking to Nature, as with druids. Instead of talking to the tree, they talk to the spirit of the forest. Instead of talking with a squirrel, they beat the squirrel over the head and cook it.

Why? Unless you got condom of resist disease, I wouldn't go near that chick. She's into that Dark God of Plagues and what not. She'll wont even give you the time of day if you're not as devout as she is. However if you must know where she is, I hear she hangs around the kitchen on subplanar level 7.

Yes, and have you ever seen a follower of the Dark God of Plagues with such smooth, unblemished skin?
It's like mucking about with bacteria that will eat your bones from inside out has turned her immune to everything. Plus that general apathetic demeanour is uber sexy.

Yea I've seen a few that can pass as normal, however once you look closely it's just a façade.

Minor update, there seems to be a misunderstanding. Once again I blame it on the Elves, this time it says I'm to teach Muscle Mage 101. This has to be a joke.
