We do have the slight problem of our sword and Gendo still being held back at Konohagakure, but we could make a detour to visit Konoha on the way to Iwagakure.
I suppose we'll be traveling with Minato again?

So we can expect that this assassin has high taijutsu and chaka-dampening abilities due to how he got the sneak on us. I suggest we throw up a mist immediately, then search out from that.

You arrive at the Hidden Stone village to find it locked down tight. As you get within a mile of the village's perimeter you find that a huge amount of shinobi have encircled it and are attacking. From their looks and the jutsu they are using, they're Cloud nin. Some attackers occasionally charge the walls, but they are killed by hailstorms of kunai and explosive tags. From the fires and the bodies this has been going on for a few days. Entry will be...difficult.

Okay, first, did we get our own sword back, and tell Gendo what's going on and to hoof it back to Kirigakure to support their defenses?

As for getting in...It might be time to put our reputation to good use, and have a few clones create some Mist and cause some confusion so we can get inside.

Hey OP, in my long post with complaints I forgot to say this:

This quest really changed my view on Naruto setting and lore. I watched the anime and read the manga for a bit before dropping them, it had a great beginning but turned mediocre pretty fast and I suspect it was going downhill from there.

Reading this quest I see things in whole different light.
One of my assumptions from the show was that hidden villages are one-dimensional, made to fulfill certain role. Like Leaf village being the "good" guys and Mist village being "evil". Now I see there are no good and bad villages, they just try to get by as they can. There are people who can influence entire villages and regions, for the good or bad.
    ....
Except for Cloud village. Those are total dickholes.

Anyway, I really like this and hope you will explore more of the setting.

Then I've done my job! I'm extremely glad to see anyone reacting like this, and yes I'll happily explore more and more of the setting. We haven't even fully explored our own home yet, what with these tumultuous times.

And yeah, no one seems to like the Cloud except for the Cloud.

We are not here to fight but to get in and talk with the leaders.

Making a distraction /could/ be a viable strategy.

But we are an expert at hiding our chakra and being a stealthy dude, also we have ANBU cloak.

We could use a couple water clones to make some mist and have open chakra signatures, make it look like a Mist recon team to get the Cloud force's attention, and use the distraction to sneak in with our cloak up and mask on.
The last thing we want right now is for the Cloud to recognize us. If they do, A and B will immediately start prowling around to look for us.

    Strong choices for stealth.

You make a few clones from your water gourd and your clones, making about four before you slip away from them and your clones start being very obvious about their presence. The Cloud Nin take to it like a fish to water. A small horde of them rush over and your clones take off like a shot. You slip in silently in the hole they left, your chakra undetectable.

As you jump over the walls a thunderous blast of kunai meets you, but Samehada, acting of its own accord, swings around you and parries them before going to your back again. You land and are caught around the neck by Kyouku himself who snarls, "You made a mistake today, Cloud scum!" He says, his ursine grip ludicrously strong.

Huh, if we attack the Cloud Nin we'll almost certainly start a war.

If we can manage to sabotage the Cloud Nin's supplies or sow confusion in the battle lines with fires and explosions we can either encourage them to disengage or give the Rock Nin the ability to make an attack.

Ideally we'd manage this without being detected or identified, how possible that is I don't know.

Also I'd like to note that that this Leader of Akatsuki is a very different one to the canon version.

I mean to call himself 'Enlightenment' rather than 'Pein' says that things have gone very differently.

Whatever we do, do NOT drop the bomb that we accept a trial alliance with Akatsuki now.
We need to first tell about the meeting, how it went and what kind of questions were given and answered.
Basically we will recite the event as it went and only in the end we will tell what Kages decided.

But for now, I think we should assist Stone village (can we do that without risking war from Cloud? I mean, we would be protecting our "hosts", we have the right for that as a "guest", right?)

Onoki meanwhile holds up his hands and creates a growing cube of light before smashing it down on 1/2 the Cloud army, their men instantly turned to dust as Kyouku laughs like a madman as Bishamonten crushes people before he calls out, "Ok Master, let's do this!" The bear puts its paws together and blasts a huge white gout of fire as Kyouku shoots a thick stream of mud, the fire turning it into an almost lava which wipes out the rest of the Cloud's army, seige weapons, and supply carts as the few survivors flee.

She mulls over a few, "Here, take this one." It's an A-Ranked mission to defeat a gigantic whale that's gone crazy on the southernmost island's shores and is ruining ships. A wise choice.

You stop by to see your fence who is looking a little strapped for cash. With the decline of shinobi in the village she hasn't had much business. Seeing you with those headbands, however, she perks up and slithers over to you, takes them from you and presents you with some fun new toys.

"This is worth a small fortune. It's a scroll called the Scroll of the Relentless Tides. It is a water-release scroll without limitations. However, it requires a steady influx of chakra to keep the water coming."

Then she holds up a beautiful wooden display case with four kunai with tags around them, "Look. The tags of the Legendary Yellow Flash of the Hidden Leaf, recovered from a battlefield and contained safely within this box."

The last item she holds up is a big wooden cask, "This is called the Repository of Dreams, and it can be used to siphon chakra away from foes contained within it, making it perfect for capturing prisoners."

It would take a massive amount of chakra to even get a standing body of water. Ok, for reference. In the anime Shikamaru brings a scroll with water to fight Kakuzu. That is about how much water we're talking about, enough to use your jutsu. We're not quite at Baksuishouha levels yet. Doing what Shikamaru did with this scroll would be 1 chakra. Keep that in mind, we only have 9, which won't make a lake.

It's not the Kunai that are important, it's the seals on them. Ergo, give the seals to the seal-master. He has the best chance of understanding how they work, and therefore of teaching us how to use it if that's a possibility.

Gen is going to be studying both the Scroll and the Hokage tags anyway.
We will have to be careful about when and how we use the technique, though. Any enemy that sees us use it will need to die; I'd rather not catch the Fourth Hokage's ire for using his secret technique.

Also, it seems that we're NOT taking along someone else for this A-Rank mission.

    And here we go.

Without a friend at your back you decide the best way to handle this would be as a lone operator. After all, more than one person could seem like a hunting force.

You arrive at the Land of Wind's border and begin your lengthy search. Water and food are scarce, but your survival training lets you eek out an existence, and the search seems without reprieve.

However, on the second week's first day you detect a chakra of a power so significant it couldn't be just another lost Genin. Sneaking close you find an old man sitting under a huge rock for shade as he sips from a waterskin and looks around idly, his keen eyes flashing when they catch the sun.

The Salamanders of Venom bring the sulfur and poison, the Salamanders of the Flame bring the heat which makes the Salamanders of the Sea's contribution steam, giving us this utopia for us to breed and grow." "Master Yaito, I have a visitor." You've lost your hand and been burned by fire before, but this is more painful than anything you've ever experienced. Your face is locked in a grimace of determination as you see the gigantic yellow eye watching you carefully. He sniffs and after only a few seconds gives you a sip from his massive jug of sake. The liquor burns hotter than the water, but you swallow it and after ten more seconds he laughs and takes you out, "Very cool, little fleshling. You kept it cool under pressure and under the heat." He said and nods, "I like you. You wanna call me or my boys up, just give us a holler, and we've got your back." he swears to you as he snaps and three smaller red Salamanders bring a scroll with a volcanic shard sticking up, ready for your finger. "Oh yeah, just one more thing. You're gonna wanna see Mamoro, the Deep One. He is most excellent and will probably let you summon his boys if you show him that I did. He and I go way back, you hear?" he asks and dutifully you prick your thumb, sign your name, and mark your fingers. "Very cool." However, we can produce water at rates unseen by humans, and we are happy to protect our summoner. Lastly, we can swim through the earth as easily as we do the sea." He says and lazily extends his massive hand, a contract scroll of seaweed there along with a sharp rock. You sign onto it and he nods, "Very well then, welcome welcome." And with the business done he rolls onto his back and takes a nap.

Out of the corner of your eye you catch movement and when you turn you see a blue salamander with red flame patterns on his hide and a long frill of black spines appearing, "Good afternoon, soft-skin! I am Tomaru, what's your name?" he sniffs you in the water and smiles, "You're a summoner!! The first one in...decades..." He thinks, "That's what they taught me, decades indeed. Come on, let's go to the land so you can talk as well." he says, easily talking enough for both of you.

Once on land you see that he's roughly ten feet long tail-tip to nose and about your height on all fours. When he stands up he's easily seven feet tall, extending his hand for a shake he grins, "So, you're the summoner, I knew someone signed the contract when you signed it with Yaito, so I guess it only makes sense the Deep Sleeper down there would give you his go ahead too." He says and his spines wriggle, "I'm just so excited to meet a soft skin who will get me outta this dreamland! I wanna use my gifts and be helpful, not just sit around and drink all day!" Salamander in fifty years!" He says and opens his mouth, faces a wet rock and blasts it with a focused blast of steam which makes the rock dry up and split apart into rubble. "I can wreck stuff!"

As he moves you can see he breathes out neither fire like Yaito nor does he drip water like Mamoro, but rather his nostrils vent super-heated steam. He catches you looking at it and notes, "My mother was a Fire Salamander and my father a Water one. I'm the first Steam ***Salamander in fifty years."

Tomaru's tongue flicks and he nods, "Wow, that's pretty co-" he starts but your sword starts to scream out noise and the seal starts to flash through the blade as the metal starts to crack and splinter before finally giving out and exploding. Tomaru lunges up and wraps his body around you and takes the metal with a loud hiss of pain before he focuses and pushes the metal out of his body with focus and dips into the water, his wounds mended. "Are you alright, Master?" He asks, the smoking handle of your sword in your hands.

"Maybe we can fix it?" he asks with half conviction as he nudges the pieces and sees the bits of seal paper on them, "Oh....it was magical. That explains why it blew up." He says and looks up at you, "Making all those seals on normal metal, even well crafted normal metal, is asking for disaster." He said and looks around, "Well, maybe I could help..." He said and paces around in a circle before saying, "I've got it! We'll get you a new blade made from Serpentsteel! It's a kind of metal that we treat with our natural chakra and that has been developing in these springs for hundreds of hundreds of years!"

He said and walks, "We could get Yaito's help." he suggests as he walks that direction, "After all, the big guy has the hottest fire in the shinobi world. I've been doing some thinking and I've just realised that as awesome as Yamada is at killing people one on one he'd be an absolute nightmare opponent in a war setting, considering that if he has enough mooks to kill he has effectively unlimited chakra.

Now that we have area of effect attacks in the Salamanders we'd be god of war.
Unfortunately for us as players it would seem war is coming to an end.

He takes you deep into a long hole where almost two miles of baby fire salamander eggs glowing bright red hot are heading the steambaths, under them the metal is getting forged and bubbled by their development.

"There, the good metal is the one that runs down into reserves over here." He says and scuttles over to some black metal with silver highlights, "The silver is the true metal, the black is mostly slag." He bites into the metal and chews it up before spitting out only shards of silver and swallowing the slag until quite a large pile exists, "Alright, we're going to superheat this, forge it into a blade unlike you've ever seen, and then we'll figure out someway to make it excellent!"

Tomaru takes you to Yaito who laughs at the request before telling you to stand back, the heat from his breath warping the air and making your clothes singe from the heat. Once it's done the metal is a pile of slag which Tomaru quickly grips with his claws and starts shaping into a long curved blade with a curved handle and a handle on the backside of the blade. "There...now you can make a slash and block with your whole upper body, that will make you stronger when you softskins smash metal against one another." he says with a laugh before looking at you, "Now, quickly to the Deep One."

In short order the Deep One rises up out of his pool and spews water on the blade which seems to pulse like a heart, "We're almost done, it need something special, to make it good for you." He says as he paces around it, "Can you find someone or bring someone who can do some advanced Fuuinjutsu? I want to live eternally and live for the thrill of battle as the sword's heart." He says, his eyes bright with excitement.

I normally don't associate with the fan base. The same way I don't associate with overt "that guy''s who share any of my /tg/ related hobbies. I don't wear shirts with d20s on them so I don't wear any anime paraphernalia either. But I do consider it the same thing, it's just buying merch to support something you enjoy.
