Been a little while since we last talked, eh? Where were we? Oh, so you’re paying attention. Good.

The Breaker wakes. She doesn’t know why, the drone of people rushing to their work is the same as it’s been these last days, and the rain just doesn’t want to stop. Haven is drowning in mud. Not that it stops the Lep’Gor, mind. Khasi’s still rooted in the same place, vigilant and watchful as always. „Good morning Akasha. How was your sleep?” She dreamt, of course. Of the Fall. A dying city, towers lying in the dust, ash riding the wind, shambling monsters and burning eyes amidst the ruins. „Fine.” She stretches, the smell of rain and breakfast washing away the night’s memories. „Let’s get something to eat, shall we?”

There’s always soup around, or so it seems. They help themselves to some, sitting in silence under the tent protecting the cooking fire from the elements. Carver seems to appear out of nowhere. „We’re preparing to leave. We’re heading for Ianka, I requested some Runners as payment for an old debt. If you’d like to join, I suggest you finish any business you have left over.”

Ianka. Old city for it’s kind, larges port for a thousand miles, and the hub for mollesh trade. As good as any, one could say. Now, was there something she still wanted to do here, in this little transient town?

Do we have ant sidequests left over to do in this town? If not, then we should go around and give everyone our thanks and goodbyes. Also, I seem to remember them being nomads or something. Could we have Khasi bless their travels, if that is in her power? If she could do that, she could also bless us and the runners when we leave.

    Pretty sure there wasn't.
Perhaps we could take some rations for the journey.

Might as well use what time she has to tie up any loose ends left. She finds Kret’s wife, and recieves what seems like a mountain of jerky and dried meatstuff. The girl thanks the rotund woman, and as she turns, finds herself facing Pola, the herbswoman. The crone smiles, and holds a stuffed package out to Akasha. „Your payment, Breaker. Not much, just some trinkets an old woman gathered throughout the years.” The cloth holds a plethora of herbs, cure to ailments of all kinds, from fevers and infections to bruises and colds. Beneath, a pendant, a piece of bone borne smooth by handling. „A charm, for good luck.” And an arrow, black steel from tip to tail, light as a feather. „We’re living in dangerous days, child, so this is my final gift to you. If you meet something monstrous in your travels, then use it, but do not be callous, if you let it fly, if it pierces flesh and bone, nothing will save the soul it bites into.”

She thanks the grinning crone, not sure what to make of what she recieved. The elders son rushes past them, stopping only to thank Akasha. „I will leave in a few days, when the roads are clear and the traders pass the roads to the south. May we meet again, Breaker.” He says, bowing his head.

The young man running off when he spots Kret, the girl thanks Pola again, and heads off to find Carver. The sellsowrd is standing by six Duskrunners, beasts like great hounds, their short furr revealing the thick muscle underneath. Four are saddled up, with the rest left as pack mules, and he finishes fastening the belts keeping their loads in place as Akasha approaches. Khasi is standing ready by his side, handing the Breaker a cloak against the foul weather. „Khasi, could you bless these people so their travels will be safe?” The spirit inclines her head a little, eyes half closed. „Of course. It will take but a moment.” The wind picks up for a heartbeat, bringing whispers with it. „I have asked all the spirits and gods of this land, great and small, to watch over them. It is the most I can do on such short notice.”

„Thank you, Khasi.” The girl lugs her evergrowing belongings up to one of the Runners, and swings into the saddle. Nitalah wanders over, still not all awake, and Carver lifts her up to her mount. With one last look and a wave at it’s folk, the four leave Haven, the three invisible servants trotting obidiently behind their little master.

The trees blur by the side of the road, the Runners making good time. They ain’t as fast as the serkesh’s prised horses, but they don’t tire easy. The companions remain silent for a while, and Akasha, fed up with the rain and the tedium of travel, turns to the spirits. „So, tell me something about who and what you are.” The whirlwind only laughs. „Not much to say, Kala. Rahir talks not unless ordered to, and Rahar cannot speak at all.” It motions at the fanged spirit. „Though I doubt we would like what he has to say. We are what they call demons in Sarkat. We are slaves to our instincts, or to our masters. Some resent being bound, but I believe that at least this way we think and see. The haze is lifted from our minds, and we have Ashej Hasakta Nimeh to thank for it.” Carver’s voice cracks like a whip. „You blabber too much, demon. You have already said more than you should have.”

The spirit mutters, but obeys, and with nothing else to do, the Breaker tests her Word, figuring out a way to keep the rain off of her after a few minutes. By the time they stop at a village, it is late in the afternoon, and she is sore in places she did not know could be sore. Perched on the porch of an inn, they take their meals while the sellsword feeds the Runners. Their quiet rest is distrurbed however, a man bellowing inside the inn. „You worthless son of a Dreignir, you dare mock Hroknar the Crimson? I should take your head for that!”

... stood, setting the chewy venison aside. „Khasi, I’ll see what the commotion is about. I’ll call for you if needed.” The spirit continues eating at a leasurely pace, only stopping to nod between two bites. The girl steps into the inn, the man causing trouble apparent at first sight. A giant dressed in leathers and rags with a mane and beard like fire, two heavy axes hanging from his belt. A group of mollesh stand in front of him, traders from their clothes, and rich ones at that, silk shirts of bright and mismatched colours on all of them. They have their hands on their rapiers, a single one with a pointy chin and thin goatee in front. „You do not mock me behind my back, little man. If you have something against Hroknar, you say it to his face and prepare to prove yourself. Or are those little pig stickers of yours just for show?” The man’s face is a deep shade of red, and spittle flies as he leans down to the trader’s eye level.

Before Akasha could think of something to do, the giant’s head snaps back, his nostrils flaring like an animals. A huge grin forms on his face as he says „Is that one of my brothers I smell? Hah! Where are you hiding, Pznyek Rka?” He paces around, the circles slowly shrinking till he stands in front of the Breaker. „You’re no Cikza. But you smell like us. Blood and steel, frost and onix. You reek of it. You the woman of one of my brothers?”

They call me a dog, whisper like old women that I should be thrown out. I payed good silver, and I will not stand this dishonour, unblooded mocking a Karkpa. The girl turns to the trader, trying her damnest to avoid bloodshed. "Look sir. Look at yourself. Now look at him! Take a good long look. He swallows, loud in the sudden silence. „I see your point. Sir, I was out of line, I had no right to speak of you as such.” The Cizka grins, saying „Good, good.” And grabs the mollesh man’s arm, the movement a blur. The trader tries to pull away, an almost comical sight like a petulant child opposing his father. The fear on his face and the knife that flashes in the giant’s hand drains any mirth that Akasha might feel. With calm movements, Hronek rolls up the trader’s sleeve, and cuts his forearm, a shallow, tiny wound, just enough to draw blood. He watches intently, and nods with satisfaction as the drops fall on the ground. „Words and blood. All enmity between us is settled.”

In a heartbeat, he ties a bandage around the wound, and pats the man’s shoulder, who almost buckles. „Smart man. And a smart girl. You know what to say. Come, sit, tell me of you, who you are, Kala.” His eyes are green-blue like polar glaciers, and Akasha feels a searing heat behind them, ready to surge forth at any moment. The Cizka sits, and bellows for the inkeeper. „What do you drink Kala?”

Got to admit, when you took out that knife, my heart almost stopped. But to see it, your people have a very practical way of settling conflict.

"My name is Akasha, I'm a Breaker. If you don't know what that is, it someone who tears down buildings and solves problems. I'm traveling with a few others right now, if you look over there, you can see to of them. Them there, the woman and the kid."

He looks like a adventurer, lets see if we can trade him one of our stories foe one of his.

Hey, you look like a well traveled man. Do you know if something happened in Sarket? Something big, like a scandal?

Also, have you met anyone that could uncurse a demonic sword?

„I need to continue my travel in the morning. Something light.” „INKEEPER. BEER FOR ME, THE KALA, AND THE KRATSKA.” he shouts, gesturing at the trader. „I am Akasha, a Breaker. If you do not know, I-” Hronek waves dismissingly. „I’ve been to one of your Cities. I know what Breaker’s do. So smart AND strong. You sure a Cizka has not taken a liking to you?” he says, grinning madly. „Hah, well, I am Hronek the Crimson, son of Hraugka. I hail from Krotsjana, many leagues to the north and east. I have travelled for two years and three score days on my quest to find my flesh and blood brother, Hrujto. And when I find him, I will TEAR THE CURR APART.” His fist slamming into the table sends splinters flying, nearly knocking over the freshly arrived mugs of watery ale. „The coward has slain our father in his sleep. Hraugka the Lnyotfas cannot rest in his tomb till the coward’s bones aren’t ground to dust and spilled at his feet. Bah, I am rude. This is no time to talk of vengeance. A toast to new friends, yes?” He raises his mug, and the girl follows suite, downing some of the weak brew. „Like Tropta piss. Just like home!” the Cizka guffaws. „So you travel alone?”

Akasha looks back at the chatting spirit and child, Carver somewhere out of sight. „Those are my companions, with one more feeding our Runners. We’re travelling to Iaka.” The giant frowns, clearly considering his next words. „You are a Yagat Kjana then? How you call it here, witch?”

„I must ask, what is a Yagyat Kjana?” His brows furrow. The man isn’t feeling all that confident now. „The Yagat Kjana are, the words do not match, but, they are women who talk to spirits, who take them as lovers and sisters and children. They dance with the the frozen winds, and can tell the fate of a warrior from the sound of his blood spilling. They see the victors of battles in the entrails of sheep, and can bless a Graen so he is invincible, or curse him so the strength leaves his arms and heart.” The girl is suprised more than anything. „And why do you think that I am one?” The giant’s chest swells with pride. „I am Ukra Mjanr, warrior above simple Graen. When the hungry dead walk the tundra, when the hunters come back with eyes of night and blood on their lips, when the Fraerj takes a Cizka, they call me. I know the old ways. I see the bind between you and the Shishka.”

He deflates real quick now though. „I have offended you holy one, though it was not out of disrespect, only the ignorance of a fool. I will pay in blood or deed, as you choose.” Hronek lays his arm flat on the table, the blade pressed against the skin, drawing beads of almost black blood.

No, no, your mistaken. Well, not about the magic part, I can do some wind stuff. But I can't predict peoples fates, I've never seen anything the guts of a sheep, and I'm not even that good of a dancer. I'm not holy and I don't desire veneration. I'm just a girl who enjoys a hard days work, and sometimes I get paid more than I expected.

"I am not offended noble Ukra Mjanr, not in the least."
She gently moves the blade from his arm and takes care of the wound while speaking.
"I know I won't be able to convice you that didn't do me any disrespect, so I would rather prefer if you could accompany me for a while." After finishing up, she takes another sip of her beer.
"Judging from your description, I can safely say that I am not a Yagat Kjana. Finding Khasi was merely a coincident, although a welcome one. I've been only able to effect the winds for a day now and can't divine the future in any way. Curses or blessings are also beyond my abilities."

Just a quick aside before typing the next post, it's Ianka, with an i, Lanka with an L means declivity in hungarian.

I try to avoid naming things like that, partially because it's lazy, partially because it'd sound stupid to me.

That is if I am not tricked by my subconscious, i.e. Kala.

„I am not in the least offended.” she says, gently pulling the knife away. „But I do not think I am a Yagat Kjana. I found Khasi, the spirit, by chance, and though I can call upon the wind, I do not see the future, nor can I curse or enchant anyone. But if I cannot convince you, I would prefer if you joined us instead of harming yourself.” „Of course, if that is your wish.” The girl was always good at glaring. „I am sorry, but in our stories, the Yagat Kjana always test the Cizka, appearing as beautiful maidens or wizened crones, and I would never disrespect one who could be one of the holy.” Akasha sighs, taking a long draught of her drink, then turns back to the Cizka. „If you will travel with us, I would ask you to stop referring to me as such. I want no one’s reverence, and I wish to earn any respect I recieve. Can you do as such?” The grin returns in full force. „Yes. Breaker.”

She finally lets herself return the smile. „Good. So, you are a... hunter of monsters, is that right?” Hronek straightens, no longer squaring his shoulders, and beams at the girl.”Yes! My greatest victory has been against the ice serpent Jörkinden. Longer than any ship built by man, living under a frozen lake, the ice as thick as a man is tall. A great battle. I still have one of it’s teeth.” He pulls out a large sack from under the table, and produces a tooth as long as Akasha’s arm. „Impressive, yes?”

„Very! Might I hold it for a moment? How did you manage to lure it from under the ice? And how did you manage to kill it?" Hronek laughs, and hands Akasha the tooth. It’s incredibly heavy, like she was holding a rod of iron. „That was difficult, yes. I cut a whole into the lake, and killed a three sheep above it. The smell of blood made it hungry and it burst through the ice! And Jörkinden was no ordinary serpent, it’s hide was made so strong by a Yagat Kjana that no steel could pierce it! So I made a blacksmith forge me a length of chain, as strong as any before it, and when the serpent surfaced, I leapt on it’s back and choked it to death with the chain. It struggled for half a thousand heartbeats, but it could not outlast an Ukra Manjr. I kept that one tooth, and burned the rest on a great pyre. They tell the tale on the cold nights back home.” He gulps down the rest of his beer, and shouts for more from the inkeeper.

„Akasha. Would you introduce me to your new friend?” Carver appeared behind the girl like a ghost. „Carver, this is Hronek the Crimson, an Ukra Manjr. He would like to join us for some time.” The two men size eachother up, and shake hands, their knuckles whitening from their grips. She get’s a feeling that a normal man’s bones would’ve broken if they recieved this kind of greeting, but the two just smile after a few seconds. „Praok’Re. I have fought along your kind before. They were not found wanting.” „And neither were the Graen at Tilea.” The giant pulls out a chair for the sellsword, and fishes out a flask from his bag. „Vritjik, the real kind, from home.” Carver’s smile goes wider as he eyes the spirits. „I’d be honoured to drink it with you.”

The two start pouring the foul smelling drink, draining cup after cup of it, when Khasi and Nitalah come inside. The spirit simply nods regally at the Cizka, who bows deeply in response, and the child hides behind Carver. „No need to be scared, little one, Hronek does not bite.” She peers out inquisitvely from behind the sellsword. „How did you get so big?” „Sheep’s innards, little one, puts meat on your bones.” Her „Eeeeew.” is met with roaring laughter from both men. They continue drinking all through the night, the giant telling story after story of his exploits, with Carver telling a few of his own that only them and the spirit really understood. The dawn seemed to have come a lot sooner that morning, and the little group left the village that day with one more amongst their number.

That’s how the Breaker met Hronek. If she knew more about the Cizka, the Ukra Manjr, would she have decided otherwise? Well, that’s not for me to know. I only know how the story goes, not the thousand ways it could have went. What am I talking about? You’ll have to wait till next time to find out, now won’t you.

    Hope you guys enjoyed today.

    Well.
I find it pretty interesting to see that the character is what one would expect from her background.
Values freedom, accomplishments and hard work, doesn't like to rely upon others, but is very respectful to those she thinks deserve it. Calm, reserved but willing to compromise, and is kiind hearted and charitable, with a mean streak when pissed off.

Considering that she was raised in a society that's sort of a hybrid between a caste system and a meritocracy, relying mostly on herself, but surviving thanks to a few kind strangers, and coming from a people that pride themselves on their stoicism (plus the whole origin myth of coming from the stone statues that hold up the world) and keeping their problems away from those it does not concern, I'd say that's fairly spot on.

Course, there's always the factor of projecting what I want to see, but still.
