Welcome, gentlemen, to today's Vault-Tec board meeting. We will be discussing the vault project.

Jameson, I heard you had some good ideas for vault experiments. Would you care to share them with us?

Multiple vertical layers, elevators, and television screens outside windows to simulate the interior of a skyscraper. Overseer under orders to deny any claims that the Vault is, in fact, underground, and all information available inside should support the fiction that the Vault is one section of a large urban building.

Window-vision control system should manipulate views (incorporating random factors) to match that from the Empire State Building. Overseer should have the option to simulate heavy storms, earthquakes, invasions, or the return of Satan's earthly dominion using the control system and machinery built into the Vault structure.

There are no guns, televisions, pencils, or any inventions past the 1800s, barring essentials such as ventilation, light, and food dispensers, which shall be made to look old timey. The armory is filled with platemail, swords, shields, maces and such. There are enough weapons and armor to match that of other vaults tenfold. There is also armor and weapon decoration kits within the armory. All the signs will be written in Ye Olde Butchered Englishe. The vault will appear to be made out of wood, but is protected and held in place by more steel than other vaults do. This vault was made for the more likely condition that the vaults would fail, and that it would be better to start off a thousand years back rather than where we are now.

I've got an exciting idea for a vault: #09 will be located up in the plains of montana. It will have all sorts of surveillence systems installed so that the dwellers may see what is happening everywhere but they cannot do anything about it. We could gain valuable insights into Survivor's Guilt and the Effects of Witnessing Horrible Events and also the Disconnected Voyeur Perspective. The Overseer should act as the only way the vault dwellers can interact with the outside world
    >> Anonymous 10/21/11(Fri)21:41 No.16699875
So get this, we build two vaults right next to eachother. The vaults are completely seperate, with the exception of a thick transparent barrier that they are able to see eachother through.

Everyone is wearing a collar rigged with explosives, and they lack the tools needed to get them off. They also lack the tools needed to break into the other vault.

Each vault has a button, which when pressed will kill a random person from the other vault.

The only way the two vaults will be able to comunicate is by writing things down and holding them up in front of the mirror.

Remember folks, I know our company motto is "The Vaults weren't meant to save anyone!" but they also aren't just meant for dicking (someone shut Ted up) around either. Each Vault is and should be a clinical experiment that will yield results well worth their initial cost down the line.

Not that it matters, since none of us are going to survive the nuclear hellstorm anyway and the entire existence of this company is as if to satisfy the whim of a dark laughing god; but that is immaterial, damn it!

We're SCIENTISTS. We do science. So lets take it again from the top, Vault experiments!

A vault of modular design, built in the form of a cube each section can cycle through points on the cube to the location of any other section. Only the entrance is stationary. The cube randomly reorganises it's configuration every 24 hours.

Each section of the cube has distinct decoration to mark it different from every other section. Every month the decoration changes, changes can include up to ten variations not present during the initial months of occupation.

These functions do not begin until two years into the vault's operation.

Should any part of the position or decoration cycle become inoperable in anyway, so as to prevent the vault from carrying them out, the effected location will be flooded with water.

    OKAY VAULT 99

How about, we buy some land with a gaping sinkhole in it. We start building the vault downward, into the sinkhole. The bottom floor, the one where most daily activities would take place, the floor is glass. Thick, anti-material bullet proof glass, at least 2 feet thick. None of the vault dwellers will be able to know the specifics of the glass. You can see through it, and into the abyss below. On the under side of the glass, we'll have genetically modified fungus that is designed to grow like cracking glass.

In addition, the Vault will construct a new robot for every human that is born. There are 2 Overseers, one who looks out for the human population, who is a robot. For added flavor, the armory will contain only medieval weapons, and winners will be convinced through subliminal suggestion and psychoactive drugs in their food that they have developed magical powers.

A vault where, once a month, a single vault resident will be killed at random in their sleep and replaced by a robot in their likeness. The robot would act exactly like the vault resident did, mimic their actions, mannerisms, and expressions to a T, but would never blink.

Once over half of the vault residents are replaced, the replacement robots will be created without human skin. They'll still act exactly like the human they replaced, though.

We'll have to model it's personality after somebody, how about the CEO's secretary, Carol?

A vault where everything is normal for two months.

After that time period, the Overseer receives a message. Every single day, the computer will give him a task to do, and if he fails to complete it or explains the situation to anyone, he will be killed. The tasks are taken from several lists of terms, nouns, adjectives, and verbs that are arranged somewhat randomly. A good example of one of the first commands would be: REARRANGE DESK WITHIN AN HOUR.

As time goes on, the randomness increases, and scenarios such as "WALK ON HANDS SINGING PATRIOTIC SONGS THROUGH THE VAULTS" become viable. This continues for about a year, after which time the Overseer is given a completely impossible command made to look like a software glitch, such as "BANANA HANDS TO THE COUNTER KITCHEN BUCKET SOFTLY 516-&341" and summarily executed in his sleep, no matter what he attempts to do. The death will be made to look like a suicide.

When a new Overseer is appointed, the cycle starts over. Should no Overseer be appointed after two months, the cycle will start over with random vault citizens instead.

An extra-tough Vault with a system of pre-recorded messages that will play within it. There is only one exit within this Vault and it cannot be manually opened. There are no means within the vault to force it open.

The first message will describe that this Vault was the only one which could be fitted with an ion shield, a prototype of an extremely high technology defensive measure. Vault citizens should be reassured that they are untouchable no matter what weapons and where the enemy deploys them. This is a lie.

The second message will play some time after the Vault has been occupied. It will say that the war has been greatly less severe than was anticipated. Apart from a few hotspots America has survived and defeated its enemies, and although order has collapsed it is being rebuilt.

From this point on the Vault will receive regular updates about the progress of the government forces are taking back the country. Growing crops and trees will be described. A utopian political system and new, greater America will be described. Every update will be more positive and more appealing. Even world peace will be described as attained in these messages.

Eventually the messages will describe the new government reclaiming the area the Vault is in. They will say they are unable to disable the Vault's unique defense system and that the citizens should hang on in there. Messages describing repeated failure to disable the shield will continue for several decades, each sounding less and less positive. Eventually the Vault citizens will receive a message that attempts to disable the shield have been stopped and they will not be released from their Vault. There will be no further messages after this point.

How about a vault that randomly seals its self off, preferably areas with many children, for three years at a time. Food is still provided, but it is bitter and unsatisfying. Lights are still on, but they go from bright and flashing to a low level that slowly strobes. Things like "they will kill you" and "do not sleeeeeep" will be whispered over coms in a way that only a couple at a time will hear. Sometimes, in the middle of their sleep cycle (it will change with their sleep patterns) a banshee like shriek will wake them, slowly devolving into an awful laugh.

Then after that the door opens and it doesn't happen again for a year or so. Success is measured by how many years you can go before the entire vault is filled with paranoid lunatics.

Overseer is instructed to fap publicly when the trapped people cry.

I have a few assuming the usual 1000 person occupancy:

In a vault, there exists only ten suits and no means to produce any other clothing.

Variation: In a vault, there is enough clothing for everyone except ten people. The clothing are all custom-tailored single-piece jumpsuits that cannot be shared.

Variation: The jumpsuits are all one size, and easily passed around, but there will always be ten people unable to wear anything.

Variation: There are enough jumpsuits for everyone. However, 990 are white, and 10 are red. The red ones have been permanently assigned to random personnel.

In a reflection-less vault, 100 people are discovered to have tattoos ranging from 001 to 100 on their bodies in areas that are not visible to the owners. Five years later, one person will be discovered to have the tattoo 000.

That might be better for potential plots anyway because you could have 'believers' and 'unbelievers' as a plot divide. On the other hand, maybe even with the final notice of defeat people would vainly still try to believe.

Maybe the last message could say that one of the scientists is remaining behind and devoting his life's work to disabling the shield. This fictional scientist has a name, face and personality and messages from him are transmitted to the Vault, so the citizens end up talking to him, baking a birthday cake on his birthday and beaming the image out to him, singing songs to him, alternately thanking him and ranting at him for not making progress, etc. And the guy just doesn't even exist.

Then if the messages cut out for whatever reason it's even more depressing because they'll think he just died and nobody knows or nobody cares. They might even have a funeral in effigy inside the Vault.

Only one person may use one of these chairs at a time. Oh, and the chairs aren't clustered together: they're spread evenly throughout all levels of the vault.

The goal is to test co-operation skills among large groups of people, by way of a lethal game of musical chairs.

You aren't literally invincible, you're just invincible within the license system. Someone could still kill you but it would be illegal under the license rules.

It's really iffy if the Vault would go along with it or not. The Overseer might decide to confiscate or destroy the licenses. The point is it can go a bunch of ways. I contemplated including AI turrets that would destroy any killer other than a licensed one to force the licenses to be used, but I decided against it in the end.

I'm not saying I would use these, I'm just pointing them out so there's some example of Vaults that occurred to me.

The hook: you are essentially normal (inasmuch as a normal one exists) Fallout characters of diverse backgrounds with a single unifying goal - for whatever purpose, it is your intention to investigate and/or open as many Vaults as possible. You do not know how everything about the number, location or purpose of the Vaults but you have greater knowledge of this kind of thing than a regular Fallout-verse human and you at least know where you might find that kind of knowledge, if you don't know all the knowledge itself.

You might be a Vault survivor yourself, a disguised Raider or Tribal scouting out potential targets, just a somebody especially interested in the Vaults, a descendant of the original Vault-Tec project checking up on results, a BoS operative looking to obtain technology... whatever. S'all good.

As our long-term goal is to gather information to better prepare us for life on other planets, I propose a vault where various areas are flooded with water.

Vault dwellers must make use of pressurised diving suits to move around in the flooded zones, as a simulation of life on an oceanic planet's seabed. This will give us a great deal of information regarding how humans adapt to deep-sea environments where large pressurised suits are needed to move amongst dry habitats.

In a similar (and less expensive vein), we could build a vault where the atmosphere will kill anyone who spends more than a few minutes breathing it. Thus, gasmasks and other breathing equipment would be supplied to all residents, and be required to be worn at all times. This would prepare them for life on planets with toxic atmospheres.

On the far wall, so as to keep the citizens from being completely disoriented, is a giant robotic facsimile of an eye, five stories tall, that stares unblinkingly down on the population. A vault containing a single active nuclear warhead in pristine condition, and a red button that activates it, in case of emergency. Of course, the red button is covered by a bulletproof glass housing that only a key possessed by the Overseer will unlock. Of course, the lock on the glass housing is broken, and can be opened and activated by anyone.

In addition, the air ventilation system has a serious problem, in that a faulty fan blade unreachable by vault citizens intermittently lets off an ear-piercing shriek that, due to the echoing nature of the filtration system, ricochets around the vault, usually emitting from a ceiling grate just over the shoulder of a random vault resident. This happens on average around 100 times a day, making sure a tenth of the vault's 1000 residents experience it in a given day, assuming no overlap.

This, however, would prove to be a fallacious assumption, as for whatever reason certain individual citizens hear it much, much more often than others, to the point that many vault citizens question whether the noise exists at all.

Build a vault large enough for a viable population of around 5-600, but with no internal walls. Access areas, plumbing, food processors, waste disposal and electrical systems should be accessible through labeled floor panels, but the dining area, commons, bathrooms, sleeping quarters (devoid of bedsheets), armory, and any other living space is on one open floor. The vault should be BARELY big enough for those functions to all occur, but otherwise comfortably furnished and supplied. There are only enough jumpsuits for a small population of adolescents, perhaps numbering 75-100 subadults of various size ranges, and no way to produce new ones.

The point would be to make any sense of privacy or "personal space" impossible.

The door will be sealed upon beginning of the test. 200 years after the last member of the initial test population dies, the vault door will be reopened, assuming environmental recovery has progressed sufficiently. A second panel by the door will be opened automatically, to provide one Garden of Eden Creation Kit to the Vault population. A holovid will then provide education in the safe use of the GECK.

The Vault population will then be forced to choose between a life in the protected and bountiful Eden that the GECK can provide, the greatest dream of so many survivors, or a meager existence in the cramped, yet by now comfortable and familiar, Vault.

The vault is without flaw and a perfectly comfortable home for the first ten years. Ten years to the day after the vault closes, however, a booming radio-jockey style voice will come on the PA, and announce loudly that it is "TORNADO TUESDAY!" All ventilation systems will cease producing a comforting cross-breeze, and instead produce gale-force winds.

Ten years after this, "TSUNAMI THURSDAY!" will be appended to the schedule, and the fire suppression system will dump gallons of water into the vault corridors and chambers, swamping the entire vault.

Ten years later, alliteration is thrown out the window as "HURRICANE SATURDAY!" becomes a weekly event, as well.

As the first Tornado Tuesday is designed to not take place on an actual Tuesday, and Saturday is programmed to come between Thursday and Tuesday, the test is to see if residents stick to the real calendar, or adopt a new one to accurately reflect the weekly disasters.

This vault is in two parts, two unique vaults that are in no way identical. Only one vault is originally populated. Procreation is encouraged, and when children are born among the first vault dwellers, they are forcibly removed to the second vault to be raised their entire lives by robots under the pretext of it being a "nursery."

After the original vault dwellers die out (or are killed off to keep to timeframe), the grown-up children will in turn be encouraged to procreate, and their offspring shuffled into the other vault. This will be the last time that this is done.

50 years after this, the computer will tell the overseer of each vault (for there would be two) that every year, five children must be "released" to the outside world, and they must take in five children from the outside. In reality, of course, the vaults are simply swapping children, each side being told they're from the outside/are now on the outside.

After the first generation of vault dwellers die/are killed, the vault's educational systems will be purged of all references to the outside world, or modified into the outside being a mirror of the vaults.

The test is to see how quickly both sides come to blows over who is outside and who is inside.

The Vault has a suggestion box. Each week Vault dwellers are required to submit at least one suggestion to the suggestion box. The Vault is supplied with enormous reservoirs of extra paper supplies for this purpose. Each week one suggestion will be randomly selected from those submitted to the selection box the previous week and enforced on pain of death amongst the Vault populace.
    >> Anonymous 10/22/11(Sat)18:45 No.16708256
Upon entry to the vault, each citizen gives blood, and then is assigned an ID card with a ranking symbol on it.

There are seven ranks in all, which dictate such things as who can sleep in what bunk, who gets how much food, who can go into what areas of the vault, who can be Overseer, who can wear what clothes, and so on. It is strongly implied that rank is based on "superior and desirable genes," but in truth it is almost entirely random. Children are issued I.D. cards on birth, which most often waver mostly around the same level as their parents, but occasionally are of an entirely different rank.

Then, 100 years later, all doors and machines respond to the ID cards as if they were their opposite on the spectrum. This means 1 and 7 would be swapped, 2 and 6 would be swapped, and so on.

This would repeat itself every 100 years, or until the vault's population has killed itself off.

A vault with a gravity modifying generator.
The generator would engage at random for a random amount of time, making the gravity any non-lethal amount (Again, set at random).

Continuing this, make the generator display clear patterns for a short time and then break the pattern etc.

The same principle as applied to ambient sound, with a humming or screeching noise instead of gravity.
