    159 KB Kobold Sorcerer Quest Chapter 5, Part 6 VKO !qw2cdBTZAc 11/03/11(Thu)21:05 No.16831787
Standing in the ethereal wreckage of the phantom dragon, you breathe a sigh of relief even as the guns of your fellows pound away at the horde of skeletons behind you, down a tight tunnel. You did it. You killed a dragon! Well, maybe RE-killed a dragon is more appropriate. The shattered dragon's skull lies broken in pieces on the dark cavern floor, the musty odor in the cave temporarily being added to by the smell of grave dirt.

The kobold who had come with you, who you had met a long time ago, has turned out to be none other than the king of old, Hiraz. He appears about the age of an adult, and you can see dense, hardened muscle through the huge bloodless gashes through his skin, and in a few places, ebony black bone.

"Finally. I was starting to get tired." Tayn says, the glow in the tattoos covering the kobold's body starting to fade away.

"Both of our soldiers are stable, for now." Turen says over to you, over the sound of gunfire from the injured riflemen.

You are not sure that the curse has been broken, only that the dragon's spirit is gone.

    What will you do, Mynthar?

Well, first, have the skeletons broken through our Web, or does it appear to be in need of re-casting?

Second, have the mages do another scan for any necromantic and arcane energies; best not to risk that the dragon is only playing dead-for-good.

    Finally, to Hiraz.
"You've got quite a tale you owe us, though I can guess bits and pieces of it. Can you feel any shred of the bitch's spirit remaining?"

You recast on your fading web, the severed silver strands wounding around each other and expanding back to their normal size. Post-extending and strengthening a spell, such a good skill to have learned. The skeletons are held back once more in full-force, quite a few surging into the chill grotto even as the spell leaves your lips. Tumbling ivory limbs become twisted in the steely cables that stretch from wall to wall like a set of metallic roots.

You turn to look at your specialists, who are stunned at the sudden slaying of the wyrm, and those whose resolve held through the display have their eyes wide at the sudden webbing.

"Specialists! Give me a full scan, NOW!" You half-shout, the gravity of making sure the monster is dead getting to you.

You gaze over at Hiraz, who is gathering his robe from the ground. His wounds look a bit smaller now, you think, though you do not see his flesh knitting before your eyes. "You've got quite a tale you owe us, though I can guess bits and pieces of it. Can you feel any shred of the bitch's spirit remaining?"

Hiraz taps his chest, throwing the robe over his head and stretching up his arms. "Yes, but now it is contained within me. Her spirit is not focused enough to regain consciousness, so she will not have a chance to recover before the process is complete." He sighs, looking over at you as though he regrets what he's about to say. "Oh, you don't know about the gray shroud, do you? I suppose I will have to explain it to you then.

    "Yes, I suppose you will."

There isn't much to say until he tells us about the shroud, and the mages finish their scan.

"Yes, I suppose you will." You say to him, seriously, as you cross your arms.

Hiraz sits on the ground, crossing his legs. "Well, when I died, I was carried back by something. Something beyond life and death." He bites his lip. "It might have been the dragon's muscle and blood in the limbs that got it to happen, but whatever way you look at it, I am now an immortal." He opens up one of the gashes in his forearm. "I will shed no blood not of my own accord. My sinew and bone are stronger than steel." He presses the skin on the wound back together, and you notice him wince slightly. "But yes, when i awoke in my coffin, I was whole again. Young again. And I pried the top of my casket off with frightening ease." He clenches one of his hands. "I knew, somehow, that there were others who had come under this gray shroud, and I knew that they would try to kill me, for what purpose I still cannot fathom." Hiraz takes a few deep breaths, closing his eyes for a moment. "So, I have done a few in. Taken their strengths and power in the form of their spirit. And each one I ingest fuels my life, my rejuvenation." He looks off calmly at the struggling dwarven skeletons. "But, still, this place does bring back memories. It's hardly changed."

"Not my kin." Hiraz says. "That dragon, one other a great linnorm, and a human... I met all those ones underneath the shroud."

"Vampirism, the farthest extent of draconic magic, or even some god's sick joke? How many have you consumed under this... gray shroud... and how often?" You ask him.

Hiraz shakes his head. "I am quite alive, I can assure you. Positive and negative energy still have their normal effects, though I do resist the negative quite well." He clenches his hand, then opens it. "How many? This would be my seventh in over 400 years. So, it does not happen very often." He clutches at his face, as though seized by a sudden head-ache, and soon his eyes begin to emit a silvery gray glow. "Ah, now her spirit has ceased struggling. I can feel it being absorbed into me." He breathes out, calmly. "I wonder what shall come of it this time."

"It hangs all over this place." Hiraz says, looking around warily. "This is much like the village that was here long ago. I remember this street..." He trails off, looking up ahead.

A few figures, appearing composed of grey smoke, drift towards you, their koboldly features appearing in a sort of transparent black lining on their transparent forms.

"Oh gods. They- they're ghosts!" The necromancer shouts, pointing at the spirits.

There are two issues with the archives.

    1) All of these threads didn't make it to the archive on time due to sporadic interest.
    2) There were major server issues, so some of the threads were lost.

OP can probably give you the tl;dr version to help fill in the blanks, but know that the majority of the threads are lost to the ages.

I dunno if I could do a tl;dr version. I can say that you are the leader of the crystal caverns, acting for their best interest and earning their trust. You have uncovered a curse that was costing your men their limbs. You have also met up with the ancient king Hiraz, whose old metal limbs were the source of the curse. After you destroyed the dragon whose spirit was the source of this curse, you decided to see if the curse was broken.

"Ah, erm, I'm not sure!" The necromancer says. "Their energy fluctuates wildly. I'm not sure what sort of creature they are.

The cloud-formed kobolds drift gently over towards you.

"Not evil." Malmar, the one-armed priest, grumbles as he lowers his holy symbol from next to his eye.

    Oh hey VKO,
I finally caught up! Spent the several days reading like 20 threads or something. I am not even sure why I had stopped following the first place, this quest is awesome!

Question: What happened to that Dragon-thing who swore an oath to serve us? I mean, we went great lengths to free him and then give him back his hands to just dump and forget him somewhere.
I bet he is very confused tight now. We should determine his capabilities, put him into a sparring match or something. I suspect he is very strong. Then keep him with us as a body-guard or something.

Another thing. Those goblins who had Dragonblood pumped through them, 2 'hot' ones, 2 'cold' ones and a Big one. What did we do with them? We noted that their powers are emotionally triggered, I think they have the same problem of Dragon blood like us and that Troglodyte. They need a training to keep it under control too.

After we come back, we need to deal with the minister of finance. I mean, we should make sure that his children reconcile with him. Having another councilor on our good sides will never hurt.

Hiraz clenches his fist. "The last time I saw that glow, my people were dead, and I had recently stopped being dead."

Out from the glow, you see two silhouettes, one roughly the size of a human, the other about the height of a kobold. The spirits that were drawn into the energy appear to be writhing, and as it stops, they float like shreds of devoured fish in the air. Those who were not drawn into it react much as the living would, fleeing, some putting their hands over their mouths and quietly falling to their knees.

The first of the pair appears as a human, with dark brown skin, even darker than some of the sun-worshipping tribes on the Red Plains. His clothing is even stranger, and it bears only a passing resemblance to Nimenish fashion with a well-cut red coat. He wears some sort of more frilled garment beneath it, small orange crystals mounted decoratively on the cloth. His pants appear to be much like the riding pants that have grown common with Nimenish nobility, but they have a silken stripe down the exterior in red, and go all the way down to a pair of buckled shoes, whose mottled exterior suggests that they came from some sort of odd, magical creature. He wears a circular breathing apparatus over his face, which he begins taking off.

The creature next to him would remind you of a goblin, were it not covered in bright green scales and having great fan-like ears you'd likely see on a bat. He looks around, calmly, at the area, his claw-like fingers running across his black coated sleeves, and making a quiet hissing sound. He is clad in a coat that appears far too large for him, the blue sleeves ballooning up around his arms as though it were made for many more of his kind. He wears a similarly large pair of pants, with a network of pockets along their blackened surface that could make you dizzy from trying to figure them all out. He wears no shoes, his left foot, despite its coloration and claw-like nails, appearing much like that of a goblin. His right foot, on the other hand, is the same brilliant orange as the portal, and has three long claws, like the leg of a bird. You see a thin, rat-like scaled tail of the same green tone as his skin hanging behind him.

"What manner of creatures are you?" You say to them. "You stand before Mythnar, Representative of the CCCP and a comrade to the people!"

The dark-skinned man removes his mask to reveal a tight-lipped smile. "Nice to meet you, Mynthar. I am Kanutis. I am a human. This is my friend, Lhayim. He is a gremlin."

The "gremlin" walks a few steps forwards, before speaking. "Say, we've been here once before, Kanut."

"I am sorry for my bluntness, but you are intruding on an investigation of the state. Explain your business..." You look over to the tattering ghosts. "...and what your aura is doing."

"Ah, that is our method of transportation." Kanutis says, looking back at the drifting ghosts. "It can be hazardous to things in its area. My apologies, we had thought this place abandoned."

"We're here looking for anyone who's made contact with the edges of chaos in this area." Lhayim says, looking over at your arm quizzically. "You'd know 'em if you saw 'em. Whitish creatures, kind of oozy, can have tentacles, claws, eyeballs."

Turen looks over at you, knowingly.

"We won't interfere with your investigation." Kanutis says, dusting off his clothing. "Please tell us where we'd be out of the way."

    "...Otherworlders; I see..."

    Approach them.

"Tell me, on whose authority are you here by?"

    Turn back to our specialists.

"Meet the others inside the crypt and gather your possessions. I will keep them busy."

Then, back to Kanutis and Lhayim.

"Well, my good guests, I assure you that the people's government has the affair under control. If you would be so kind to join us inside the tomb and away from this...visage of the past."

    Sorry, was getting dinner.

"...Otherworlders; I see..." You walk over to them. "Tell me, on whose authority are you here by?"

"Our own." Kanutis says, smiling down at you. "We travel to attempt containment of the edges of chaos."

You look back to the specialists for a moment. "Meet the others inside the crypt and gather your possessions. I will keep them busy."

Looking back to Kanutis and Lhayim, you gesture out with your right hand. "Well, my good guests, I assure you that the people's government has the affair under control. If you would be so kind to join us inside the tomb and away from this... visage of the past."

"Certainly." Lhayim bends in closer, looking at your hand. "Oh, that's a mech piece, is it? I had no idea the people of this plane has such sophisticated stuff."

"Lhayim, be polite." Kanutis says firmly, smiling over at you. "We'd be honored to join you. Lead the way."

Walk with them to the crypt.

"The CCCP represents the greatest composition of scientific minds of all Kobold-kind...on this plane, anyway. And yes, this is a /insert technical mumbo jumbo here/. Not the newest model, but still works good."

"Are you some sort of benevolent arcanists? Or something else?"

    Nod.

"And what about your world? Suffice to say, our knowledge of the planes is mediocre, but first-hand experiences are limited here."

"The CCCP represents the greatest composition of scientific minds of all Kobold-kind... on this plane, anyway. And yes, this is an Alcotrus class R-1 replacement. The only one like it ever built." You rotate your shoulder, and the sound of stone churning against itself is audible. "Not the newest model, but still works good."

The gremlin seems to be satisfied with this explanation. "Wow, you have classifications? Are you sure this isn't some Continuity junk?" He taps on your arm, gently. "No, too heavy. But not by much." You notice as he does that he has a set of thick spiderweb-like scars on the bottom of his left hand and arm.

"Are you some sort of benevolent arcanists? Or something else?" You say, pulling your hand away in frustration. The gremlin looks hurt.

"I'd say we're squarely in the something else range." The tall human says. "I don't even cast magic."

You nod, cautiously. "I suppose that would put you there, yes. And what about your world? Suffice to say, our knowledge of the planes is mediocre, but first-hand experiences are limited here."

"Well, I was from the plane of Q'iln." The human says. "A harsh desert wasteland as far as the eye can see."

"And I was from my people's homeworld." The gremlin adds in quickly. "Tresel. Mostly covered in cities and goes over everything from rocky terrain to swamp." He taps his metal leg on the ground. "Has this funny thing, though. A curse that robs the preborn of bodyparts." The gremlin chuckles eerily. "Myself included." He puts his fingers to his jaw. "I'm one of a tiny few to make it out. About 25%." He shakes his head. "But, yes, about this place, what can you say about it?"

"People once lived here." Hiraz says, his voice quiet, but firm.

"When last we came here, to exit, this village was all dead." The human says, firmly. "Any bodies that were ripped up by the portal were already dead at least 12 days."

    Hiraz looks surprised. "What..."

"You were that living thing I saw right before we skipped out." Kanutis says, firmly. "They were all gone a long time, son. No idea of the cause of death, but they were cold as stone."

Hiraz falls silent. "But... But that's..."

"Listen. You don't know how long you were dead." Kanutis says, quickly. "But it was at least that long. Probably a few years or something."

"Hiraz... Hiraz," You comfort him. "Come on. What is it? What do you remember?"

He shakes his head. "No, I suppose I didn't hear them cry out. I thought it odd. That must be right." He pauses. "Then, why did they all stay here to die? Why do they linger still?"

The spirits whisper all around you.

"I feel like, with my death, I abandoned them." The kobold says angrily. "They must have been hungry."

Hiraz clenches his jaw. "Well, I fell into a deathly illness. Despite my extended life, I was swiftly coming to an end. I told my army to go and raid the nearby dwarves, but I suppose they never came back with the food." He pauses. "All these people... Could they still be waiting?"

"Sir, in... in my replacement eye, I can see them more clearly."

    "What?" You ask him.

"They're trying to scrape crumbs out of a pot of some kind." Turen says.

"They were still starving." Hiraz says, quietly. "But they hoped the military would return. And look what it got them."

"Sad...but before we can rest their spirits, we need to know: was this a result of the dragon's curse? Have they resurfaced again in light of our battle?"

Once we get a few feelers back, let's arrive back at the tomb and speak with our priest specialist.

"Tell me, Holy Man, do you remember the saying about venerating your elders?"

"Something like, 'May you make the mistakes of the ancestors.'" Malmar says.

    (Long delay warning.)

    Chuckle.

"Well, we may be about to do just that, but I was thinking of a far older saying. One that predates our and our previous countries by far..."

    Turn to the coffin.

"Each Kobold that falls in the arms of their comrades is entitled to the feast of a thousand ogres and the hoard of the greatest dragons..."

    Nod.

"Once we are sure that this drake's vile curse is gone for good, I believe we owe them. After all, we are nothing without our people."

Also, long periods of nothing to do for the next two hours; doing a radio show and all that. :P

Even though we'll need to perform tests to verify that the curse if finally gone from the population, I think that it's safe to say: mission accomplished.

    "Alright Kobolds, let's move out."

    Return to the extraplanar guests.

"As you can see, we have the situation fully under control, and any distortions to...whatever it is you were here for...chaos, yes? Yes, that is now under control." Smile deeply. "However, if you plan on staying, I'm sure you wouldn't mind having a sit-down with some of our greater minds. Nothing too heavy; just a think tank of sorts."

I'm heading to bed, OP. I know you have work tomorrow (today), so I'll see you next Thursday since you moved the date back IIRC.

"Not exactly that, no. We were looking for anyone who has had contact with the edges of chaos." The human says.

You narrow your eyes. "However, if you plan on staying, I'm sure you wouldn't mind having a sit-down with some of our greater minds. Nothing too heavy; just a think tank of sorts."

The gremlin shrugs. "You give me a look at your mech, just a cursory look, and I'll talk all say if you want."
