51 KB Wrecking the THEME!? Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)13:32 No.17027063
Have you ever had THOSE players that dont get the theme of the campaign? At all?

I'm running a DnD 3.5 campaign right now, about a group of adventurers dedicated to exterminating demons and other outsiders. The campaign so far, has been quite dark, I've run it as a grim and dark "Diablo" style semi-survival horror with a nice helping of that Ravenloft-style feel.

Everyone caught on quick, and we have the assortment of daemon-hunters, badasses and other heroes of horror....and my latest player...did something else. He told me he was playing a rogue style 'ninja'/monk...

And he ended up making what's probably a power ranger. He dresses colorfully, and he's this Sun Soul Monk kind of boisterous hero that calls out all his attacks. "Lathander KICK!" he poses, and uses a bunch of his abilities in the most exaggerated ways. When he disspears with his abilities, he always says "SUNSOUL, VANISH" to his enemies. And yes, he has a gigantic, glorious sun emblem in his chest that he says "Always glows with glorious incandesence".

He's wrecking the campaign. It's no longer about horror and survival againts all odds. He's single handedly changed the feel of the campaign, and the problem is...he's a great roleplayer, always in character, and the other players love him.

Should I just leave him be?
Am I just crazy? What experiences have you had like that?
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)13:37 No.17027095
i'd make his colorful clothes and shining sun emblem and habit of shouting the names of his moves attract a lot of unwanted attention.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)13:39 No.17027103
Based on what you say in your last paragraph you should roll with it but "Lathander KICK!" is pretty fucking faggoty. I would ask the DMs permission before making such an absurd thing as a Kamen Rider ripoff in medieval fantasy.

He sounds fun, and if the other players enjoy his antics I'd caution against clamping down on him too harshly. Take him aside and ask him to tone it down a little if it bothers you that much. Just let him know that comic relief is great, and can really liven up a campaign, but it shouldn't overpower the setting itself.

See, that's not really his fault, that's yours. If it really is a grimderp survival horror game, the setting should be more than capable of swallowing up and breaking the spirit (or sanity) someone who is running around and acting ridiculous.

I didnt mind it, until it started getting a little weird. He literally made his save againts a Ghost's fear aura, running jumped above another character, then did a flaming, jumping kick againts the Ghost, and shouted "Lathander...KICK!".

    >>17027121
I did. Everyone else was in to it, but you know, I cannot lay into the horror TOO thick, it's more of a subtle horror- "Eldritch Things beyond your understanding", kind of horror- a little Cthulu, and then a little Diablo.

But see, with his insane saves, I cannot FORCE him to fear the monsters, and he hasnt failed a single morale check.

He just takes it as him being 'The Glorious , Unbreakable Will of the Fist of Lathander's Sun!"

    In game quote.

    >can really liven up a campaign
That's not so great if OP is really serious about running a Ravenloft-style game. There are ways to do humor in Ravenloft that doesn't destroy its feel. Having someone who acts like one-man sentai squad and following the logic inherent in that genre seems like it would be extremely disruptive.

I feel like it'd be playing with a group of normal people and one person who thinks they're Bizarro Superman. You tell them they've been arrested and are going to be executed and Bizarro player seriously reacts in character as if you've told him he's being freed and is being given a noble title.

The monk isn't being a good roleplayer. He's doing a good job of being very dedicated to his character concept, but in order to do that, he's got to ignore the majority what's going on around him and absolutely refuse to accept the mindset of a character in the game.

Consider him the WHFRP Empire player who, come hell or high water, demands to parley make friends with everyone. In all honesty, he shouldn't have survived his first encounter with beastmen.

    > Having someone who acts like one-man sentai squad and following the logic inherent in that genre seems like it would be extremely disruptive.

Its only disruptive if the party finds it disruptive. He claims the rest of the group actively enjoys his antics. That's the 'opposite' of disruptive. Trying to clamp down on him now, after the other players have all gotten really into his character, would be the more disruptive option.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)13:57 No.17027224
It depends on what your players want.
Take some time before the game to round them up and talk about the game's future. Ask them if they prefer the horror feel or the silly feel. Change/drop your campaign if it's the latter, talk to the guy about it if it's the former. He sounds like an understanding person.

You need to decide what level of "players running the show" you're comfortable with. As I see it, the monk is essentially dictating the mood of the game.

If he's honestly prancing around calling himself "The Glorious, Unbreakable Will of the Fist of Lathander's Sun!" you don't think actual NPC Lathandites might find his method of worship strange? Or how about villagers? People might start talking about how he's "touched in the head," and treat him with the kind of condescending discomfort someone like that seems likely to garner.

As a forever GM, I'd tell him he can suck it up. Half the fun of running a game should be to see what it turns into after releasing the players on it, because it sure as hell won't go the way you intended without judicious rail roading.

Enforcing a theme that just isn't working is just as rail-roady as forcing some kind of plot. If it isn't holding up due to character actions or the players actively working to subvert it, rather than getting frustrated you learn to roll with it.

Or you stop being a GM, because a GM really needs to know how to roll with the punches his players throw at him.

Not who you're replying to but...
We usually say if you can figure out where the character comes from and what they're like with in-world explanation... go nuts with it.
Though we also have a global rule for all of our campaigns that says characters aren't bound to one another, they need a reason to be a group as well.

And our #1 rule is the golden "don't be a dick."

Surprisingly it works, and the wacky characters we sometimes get are hilarious.

I'm not ANGRY or not having fun- I love using undead and other fell creatures and challenging my players with like evil daemons and stuff....

But I do have to change the tone of the campaign a bit, I mean, they're obviously not going to fall prey to the darkness and horror that lies within their souls with "The Glorious, Unyielding Fist of the Sun Soul" around.

I had one of THOSE players. Let call him Dagger. It was a Steampunk game and everyone else in the group had their niche they filled: Pilot Leader, Builder/Mechanic Scientist, Gunner Strongarm, and our Engineer Pseudo leader who was our Devil's Advocate. We all carried guns while Dagger carried daggers. While we were researching and fact finding for the mission, he was shopping for daggers. When upgrading our ship and equipment, he was buying daggers. At one point he found a blacksmith and brought him back to our ship and was angry when we sent the man away. We had to explain that the man he brought made horseshoes and not machine parts. Proceeded to find another blacksmith who made machine parts who ended up being sent away too cause he made tractor parts. Dagger wasn't good at asking the right questions.

The pilot was basically the tie breaker for anything. If we couldn't decide something he chose for us. We were all cool with it. Dagger convinced himself that our Engineer was the team leader when he was was the cold cut voice of reason and had seniority when Pilot was gone. The problems start when Dagger tries to play an assassin, use dirty fighting methods and he tried to explain his methods to us...more specifically Engineer who from day one has been about honor, face-to-face fights and respect. Dagger gets chewed out and mopes. Tries again later. Gets mad and points out that Engineer is Evil and isn't playing it. It was Metagaming and no one else took it into account while roleplaying. The Oldman played Lawful Evil and Dagger couldn't understand that Lawful Evil didn't mean psychopathic killer but gentlemen who ruins you by buying out your company and digs up dirt on a noble family to prove they have no claim to entitlements and so forth. Eventually he stopped showing up and we wrapped up his story as him finding happiness in the world with a loving wife and has several children.

I'd say to keep the grimdark theme, but let the Lathander Rider stay as is - no need to fuck up the player cohesion, since I find that the hardest thing to maintain once something goes awry. Just make things a bit harder on him, such as the whole baddies notice him a LOT easier thing. Maybe play the angle of this guy inserting himself as the hero figure everyone in that world needs, though unable to do quite EVERYTHING by himself. Set up situations where he will have to rely on the fellow party members to complete, situations where he can't Lathander Kick everything into smithereens.

I'm also curious... does he even have a backstory relevant to your setting, or did he come from afar?

    But he wants to be.

"If only I could be so grossly Incandescant."

Though I suppose he could be speaking in metaphores about bringing hope and such, and I'm fairly sure he doesn't scream his attacks. It's still an evident inspiration.

OP, some players have a character in mind and will play it reguardless of the theme. I know it can be bothersome in several reguards, but if they're still keeping themselves in character, and their only disruption is to the theme, then it's probably worth the effort to adjust the game to a new paradigmn.

Perhaps by intorducing an actual ninja/monk (swordsage) of which introduces himself as a "Shadow of Tenebrous!" who attacks with things like "Five Sneaking Shadows Strike!" and "Punch with the fury of a thousand dying suns!"

Which was a problem for us. We had a week to make our characters and we told him several times what the theme was and what everyone else was playing (which we usually don't do so things stay interseting) but he insisted. We accepted and told him which skills would be very handy and he ignored us. His character could only pick locks, disarm traps and sneak around. He completely ignored the whole Steampunk concept.

I have a sneaking suspicion that he just used an old character sheet so he wouldn't have to roll up a new one.

The Campaign took place in Faerun, and Sun Soul Monks are Lathander worshipping Monks.

His build is a Monk/Cleric/Sacred Fist, and he's pretty powerful when his party members give him time to "UNLEASH THE POWER OF THE SUN".

His backstory is alright, it's about him being born blind, living in the streets of Zhentil Keep. His life was pretty raggedy, until one day, a Cleric of Lathander blessed him...and cured his blindness. The first thing his eyes saw were the rising of the morning sun...

    Dear OP,

I think you're just looking at the larval stage of an appropriate character. You've said the player is a good RP'er. Here's what he's waiting for: he's waiting for you to break him. He's waiting for you to create a situation where the party has to split up, and then have him beaten in one-on-one combat by an appropriate nemesis. Fudge the dice, make it close, but beat him. Then throw him in a dungeon and start the torture.

When the other PCs free him, I bet you the player has been waiting for this moment. I bet you that you see some great RP.

Another thing to consider, though, to be fair, that making a nemesis makes the campaign focused a lot on that player.

The DM's original problem was that the player was assuming direct control through his shenanigans. Are we actually considering giving him MORE of a focus?

Don't be a retard. The DM sets the parameters for the nemesis character. The DM already determines who wins the fight and who doesn't.

BECAUSE... BECAUSE... THE RISING SUN... THE MORNING LIGHT... IT REPRESENTS HOPE. HOPE THAT TOMORROW WILL ALWAYS COME. HOPE THAT A NEW DAY WILL ALWAYS DAWN.

AND NOTHING, NOT EVEN THE BLACKEST NIGHT, CAN DESTROY THAT HOPE.

    This isn't RIFTS here.
Any DM/GM can and will tell you that in D&D you can easily make a character with an "I win" button, or you can make one who can be a challenge and require critical thinking to beat.
Or you can make a mook, but they're not nearly as fun to make.
    >> Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)14:54 No.17027631
Go with the Nemesis idea. Make it more interesting though by making it two of them. Twins. Who hide in the others shadow when not fighting. Then have one of them cast Mirror Image and really start messing with your group.

I like. If I may suggest my ideas...

    >Pink
A bright and happy librarian, who doesn't get why normal people are so disturbed by what they work with. Always bright and happy, even in the face of unspeakable horrors. May or may not be Nyarlathotep trolling everyone.

    >Blue
Up and coming researcher who dug too deep with his experimental maths and was forced onto the team. Uses rifles. May or may not be Nyarlathotep trolling everyone.

    >Green
A fairly normal guy, who got on the team due to some extremely random luck. Comedy Relief. Fights using comedy-relief fu. May or may not be Nyarlathotep trolling everyone.

    >Yellow
A young woman who was abducted by cultists for use as a virgin sacrifice. She murdered them all with knives. A bit of a tomboy, kind of a knife nut. May or may not be Nyarlathotep trolling everyone.

    >Red
A young sorcerer, who fights for JUSTICE and possesses unprecedented magical power. Kind of dumb, and liable to charge in ahead of everyone else. So strong is his justice, it overrides the normally corruptive nature of magic. Unless, of course, he's Nyarlathotep trolling everyone.

Apparently, the DnD Campaign of Horror turned into "Bakuryu Sentai SunSoul Ranger".

I'm still hoping the player actually DOES drop kick Mephisto in the face while screaming "LATHANDER...KICK!"....

If it were an anime, Mephisto would block it with one hand, because all badguys have to be stronger in the first fight. It's like a law or something.

Well as long as they can both hide in each others shadow then you could make two totally different characters for the Twin Nemesis. How about something like a Wizard/Rogue/ Daggerspell Mage/ Shadow Dancer for one and say Monk/Ur Priest/Sacred Fist? I think those builds work.

Have the Monk do most of the heavy lifting and the Wizard support. Switch when lightning bolts need to be thrown around. If you really want to do the whole shadow things then Shadowmagic could work too.

Adjust your damn mood and run with it. You've got one player who has a character he clearly enjoys a whole fucking lot. If the group doesn't hate it and doesn't speak out, there's a good chance they are digging it too.

As the GM, your job is not to play the game you want to play, it is to run the game that the players can enjoy.

Diablo has quite a bit of flashy equipment, and a respectable amount of blithely stupid heroes who run around like assholes and smash stuff.

The Warrior of Diablo one was a poorly dressed jackass who made it WORSE because of his lack of mental strength/good sense upon defeating Diablo.

I mean, look at the amount of "Soard is bettor cuz I stik shinee Jemz an Skulzz on it!". And you can't tell me a lot of the equipment isn't plain ridiculous to begin with. The Sorceress dresses like a whore, and the Necromancer is all "BONESANDSKULLSBONESANDSKULLLLZ".

But yeah, I do kind of know what you mean by people spoiling the tone. Your "Dorothy, the Scarecrow, and The Bat." thing.

Sometimes, everyone does that. A lot of the games I play in end up involving everyone going all Monty Haul and insisting on getting another monster bit for their costume, taking all the gold, and generally ending up functionally eviler than the actual villains.

    I mean, think about it.
Let's say that you're running a relatively upbeat game about adventurers having hijinks, fun and everyone's like upbeat good aligned characters, who spare everyone, even the bad guys, because everyone can be redeemed!.

Then the newguy makes a character like Rorschach from Watchmen."This city is afraid of me. I've seen it's true face. The streets are extended gutters...and the gutters are full of blood. When the drains finally scab over....all the vermin will drown."

Just beating and crippling every badguy to death.
