63 KB Adeva 2.5 Beta release Black Mesa Janitor 12/25/11(Sun)22:49 No.17334234
    Hey there /tg/.

So, Christmas has come again. And, as some of you may know, AdEva has something of a tradition of Christmas releases.

To that end, let me present you with today's offering, The Adeptus Evangelion 2.5 Public Beta (complete with bookmarks and updated record sheets):

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=7BALG3SG

"But BMJ", I hear you ask. "Where is the final product?"
Simply put, Adeptus Evangelion Version 2 was as flawed as it was because we rushed it out the door. That is a mistake I do not want to make again. This Beta is fully playable. And I want you to play it. I want you to play the *shit* out of it.

Because on March 1st, 2012, I am going to start asking people: where does 2.5 suck?

And based on what people answer that question with, I will make changes. If all goes according to play, your feedback will result in a vastly superior PDF which I will release in May of 2012.

I hope this gift is something you will enjoy. Think of it as a down payment on the real gift in May. But 3 months is a long time to wait to tell me I make a glaring typo on page 5. So, for those interested, I have created a thread on the Adeptus Evangelion Forums:

    http://s4.zetaboards.com/adeva/topic/9291983/1/

You will have to register to make full use of it, but it is there. And any feedback you submit there will be considered when I put together the real 2.5.

I stress again, this Beta is fully playable. If you have been waiting for a new version of AdEva to get into things or start up a new campaign, this is your chance.

    Merry Christmas, Fa/tg/uys.

Gonna expand on this; I get the need to emphasise that pilots are going to be awful in actual, not-Evangelion combat. Making an enemy with 75 BS (UN Special Forces) or 85 WS (Angelspawn) seems to be taking that concept too far.

    >>17336453
I'd agree, it seems more like increasing the quantity of attacks and the damage would be better, since that way it sort of takes the resolution of the attack out of the pilots hands.

With stats like this, it makes their TN: Yes to dodge amazingly useful.

It's really mostly his "team's" fault.
They're the reason for the lack of direction and breaking everything repeatedly. As well as the source of all around bad and uninspired design.

Pretty standard example of a so called "/tg/ project".

Former Dev here. That's really what it appears to be I'll admit, but that's really not the case. The team that actually does shit are a pretty cool bunch of dudes. There was an extremely promising working version that was 95% done before BMJ canned it at the last minute and redid everything himself. Actually I shouldn't say by himself. His personal favourite got to run wild with it while he told everyone else to take a hike, as usual.

All that garbage you see in there with Gundam style Heat blade technology, random Berserk types being Defining features, ATT trying to be a weak gunner instead of actually good, Skirmisher being forced to use exactly one weapon, bare and boring XUPgrades, schizophrenic references to various mecha shows, angels that behave nothing like the show and cause retarded 20 turn broken ass cheese and kiting battles with their internally incoherent abilities, mindlaser AT blaster characters, useless afterthough surplus, clunky and annoying conventional forces with charts upon charts to look between and read, research that makes it impossible to actually get any of the techs by games end, bloat bloat everywhere, replacing 95% of the DH core mechanics with homebrewed shit, clunky construction, overall horrible balance, visual ugliness and difficulty of reading, is all those two.
    >> Anonymous 12/26/11(Mon)09:48 No.17337802
    >>17337793

Well if you had a version that was 95% good to go, why didn't you fork it off from BMJs version and make a separate release? Put your money where your mouth is and let us see the product. Otherwise that's all just trash talk.

I ain't trying to start a slander campaign but you're accusing a bunch of people who actually have a work ethic of not knowing how to make a game, and that's not cool. In fact, after he decided he didn't need anyone but his favourite dev, he straight up closed the Dev channel and just put it up for open forum so he could cherry pick other people's ideas he liked and make his own version. We have nothing to do with this. Throwing out a near complete version, ignoring the consensus of the entire rest of the team, going backwards against the pre-written design guidelines, refusing to take math, playtesting and common sense as evidence for or against anything, running away with the bulk of everyone's work and bastardizing the easy to change bits, and then having the nerve to too lazy to test it and 'releasing' it as an 'open beta' expecting everyone else to do his work for him without so much as fucking spellchecking his work like everyone is taught in second grade? That's all him. Not us.

Actually, what the hell. Why not? After I did 30 odd pages of writing and an entire week of balancing and playtesting and then was told to fuck off, only to have him take the pieces of it he happened to like instead of doing it himself when I'd already told him I didn't want my name anywhere on this crap, I might as well put it to some kinda use.

There's a nice, clean, SPELL CHECKED .pdf sitting on my HD missing nothing but angel stuff and the various fluff from long ago explaining the NGE setting. I can either spend today finishing the angel shit and have it ready for tomorrow in a totally playable state, or I can chop out the angel chapter pretty much immediately and have it up today without it. Choice is yours.

I have a theory that there is a hidden conspiracy of autists who would like to steal Adeva's thunder, and who are so terrible at game design that they wormed their way into dev with no intention at all to help the game, and instead tried to load as much of the devwork onto others as possible so they could steal said hard work, hack out the parts that did not appeal to their autismal selves, and then come out and try to steal the thunder of this release by releasing their own Adeva: AUTISM VERSION in the very same thread.

This one is actually from Shinji and Warhammer 40k, where he finds a box of minis and books at age 6 or so, and then through being da strongest, amasses his own private army, rules his town from the sidelines, and basically takes twenty levels in badass.

Then in the second chapter, he actually gets to Tokyo 3.

I'm planning to GM a vanilla game of 2.5 soon, and mostly play it by ear just to learn the system well and have some fun along the way.

After that I'm going to try an adaptation where it's refluffed as a high fantasy epic, where the Evas are somewhat like the mecha from Escaflowne; simultaneously armor and mount, modeled after dragons.

I am actually debating whether or not to include a FUS RO DAH! AT power. Repulsion already exists, I suppose I could just refluff it.

I am being open about the fact that I'm definitely in a big "Dragons!" Mood mostly due to Skyrim, although the Eva/dragons won't resemble Skyrim dragons at all. More like a combination of Escaflowne mecha and the freakish abomination dragons from Legend of Dragoon.

We're the people who were asked to write up Berserker, Skirmisher, Pointman, and the xUPs some months ago, only for everything to be canned after about...two months or so?...of research and writing, due to some differing opinions. BMJ worked on his own on it from that point until about a month ago (with Elpizo), I took what had been submitted and built upon it as a separate thing, originally for my own game, though I was then asked to make it public. There's currently four games running using this version, two in the works, and I believe two others that have switched over to it since an OD-less, Angel-less, barebones version was made mid-November.

This is fucking stupid. Command IMMUNITY? I could understand if it made it a hard command test or something, but outright immunity is too far.

Impact survivors start with 23 Int and T? Strange choice.

The depth limit of 25 also seems too large, what with most talents lying at 5 or 10 depth. 20 seems like a much more reasonable limit.

The random berserking table looks force berserkers to rely on chance to be viable. I haven't looked at zerkers themselves, so I don't know if this holds up, but it's a worrying sign.

The ablative upgrade that gives righteous fury immunity seems unneeded. It's one of the core points of the DH system and removing it get's rid of some of the element of chance which, in my opinion, is a bad move. There needs to be some danger of things suddenly going wrong, thats just how evangelion is.

Weapons are full of complete wank. Burning is terrible and doesn't fit with the setting. Same applies to heat and tesla, and don't even get me started on that SRW sword. What's worse, the weapons upgrade system seems to have, against all odds, actually gotten worse. It's never clearly defined what exactly the difference between specific and general weapons are. I still can't figure out why tonfa is in the specific, or why eva-sized flails even exist in the first place.

Having the crit tables each take up an entire page is a complete waste of space, too. What was the point of that?

Berserkers autoattacking comrades on a 2 degree failure of a +10 WP/Fel roll is just needlessly cruel to Berserkers. Half the fun of berserk was the roll to see what happened after combat. Would you go exploring the ocean? How about killing friends, or even calming down? It was part of the fun that was clearly excised for this release.

Speaking of fun things gone, the new condition on When suddenly... that requires the pilot's life to be in danger kinda ruins most of the great parts of that talent. It used to be a fun way for an OD to fuck with pilots, or have amazing OD vs OD battles of wits and espionage. The general trend of OD's only acting as foil for pilots and not having access to some of these sweet talents outside of them upsets me.

You will find under the melee upgrades section that Specific melee weapons can not be given additional Technologies, but may receive Enhancements. General melee weapons can get both. So that's really the big difference between the two.

You are right, though, there needs to be more text to define the difference between the two.

    > crit tables

That was a gross format thing. Basically, our layout had technical difficulties a week before release and we lost a lot of formatting work. I had to bust ass to get this out in time for Christmas (which is also why it came out Christmas Day, not Christmas Eve). But in the time left to me, I could not match the superior formatting he did. So I could not fit crit charts 2 to a page without a lot of stuff spilling over to the next page at odd intervals.
So it was a matter of one flavor of gross or another. I decided to try and keep charts on the same page as much as possible. It is wasteful in the beta, yes. But I expect to fix it for the final version.

I'd really only have to agree with the weapons part. Heat seems like a trait that would be pretty useful in something against other Evangelions, but pretty gimmicky otherwise.
Also, it doesn't seem like there's a good tech for those who have very high strength: Chain doesn't add SB, Heat is meh, and Tesla's special rule about damage doesn't help those who have strength. Perhaps there could be a tech to replace Heat for that?
    >> Black Mesa Janitor 12/26/11(Mon)14:46 No.17339786
    >>17339748

High strength is kind of its own reward. Chain and Tesla help people who lack it, but none of the technologies punish you for having it.

Heat, by the way, really is not in it for the power field. The power field is basically there because of the fluff. The real advantage of Heat is the +2 Breach, and the chance to set stuff on fire when dealing crit. That means that by the time Heat sets the area on fire, any further damage it does to that area is going to be more crit every round until it is put out. I like to think that is pretty sweet.

That makes Heat sound pretty decent for Skirmishers who could get in those consecutive hits, if still a bit too out of theme for my tastes. Does the Power Field from Heat add to the Pen and Damage?

The point I was trying to make was that high strength increases your melee damage regardless of tech (with the obvious exception of Chain).

A high strength Evangelion with a progressive, Tesla, or Heat weapon still benefits from their high strength. The Technology is just in addition to it. I guess we could make a specific tech that benefits you more for your strength, but I'm not sure what the fluff for it would be and I don't see a specific nice that it would be there to fill. High strength is already something that the vast majority of melee fighters will want, even without giving a Technology that rewards you extra for it.

Well then. It sounds like Adeva just is not for you either setting wise or mechanically. Sorry about that.

I wouldn't expect the alternative to 2.5 to appease you any more than what is available to download in this thread. It is different from 2.5, but not by a whole lot. Kind of the same way that a DnD 3.5 Rogue and a DnD 3.5 Ninja are different. They are not the same, but they are still sneaky and skillful guys with not a lot of armor who's best chance of dealing damage is sneak attack. If that is not your playstyle, neither of them are really going to appeal to you. Hopefully this is a metaphor that is not going to be taken to extremes and go into an in depth discussion of all the differences between certain Dnd classes.

The setting is what it is, but hopefully V3 (which will not be based on Dark Heresy) will have more palatable mechanics for you. Though I would have to know what, in specific, turned your stomach.

Actually, how the fuck do thrown weapons work?

All I can find in DH is the passage:
    >Thrown weapons cover anything propelled by muscle power
alone and covers knives, axes, spears and such like. Unless they
are also classed as melee, thrown weapons cannot be used in close
combat (or if they do, they count as improvised weapons). When
using a thrown weapon you add your SB to the damage you inflict
(with the exception of explosives such as grenades).

from the armoury chapter, and the following from Playing The Game: Damage & Healing on throwing non weapon objects
    >As described in Chapter V: Armoury, some weapons are
designed to be thrown. The further away the target is from
you, the harder it is to hit the target. While ranges for these
weapons are determined by your modified Strength Bonus,
this system doesn’t cover objects not designed for throwing,
such as bags of sand, bricks, and so on.

However in the actual weapon tables, thrown weapons have specified ranges and there seems to be no system of using 'modified strength bonuses' to determine range explained ANYWHERE in the book.

How fucking far can people throw shit?

It's more hilarious when one of the other players doesn't know you have Inhuman Biology (Citrus), and hands you lemon Snapple, because he was trying to be nice. And then you chug it cause you're half out of it and he didn't mention it was lemon til afterwards.

Which actually happened, by the way. Guy doesn't even look at charsheets.

I'm actually kinda wondering about running a game of Ad EVA where you specifically play as the higher ups in the organization, basically Commander, OD, RD, UN Inspector and so on. Game would be more focused on intrigue and politics then combat. While crazed and overelaborate plans for your own "personal" third impact are not required, they are however worth bonus XP.

Yes. Of course. I must have been mistaken. I completely imagined explicitly outlined things that are still sitting up in the dev forum logs, none of the playtesters actually exist and are all totally made up, and none of this ever happened no matter what anyone will say otherwise. I just believed they existed because I wanted to.

    Grow up.

Personally; I'm sad that you didn't use some of the more light hearted quotes later on, or some of the more bad ass quotes.
Apart from the stuff by the good doctor it appears that pretty much all the stuff in the last thread has been ignored, and there were some fantastic lines in there.
'Ich Liebe Dich' was perfect for the part on character death/defeat and small enough to be fitted in anywhere really. Not using a line like that is just a waste.
    >> Anonymous 12/26/11(Mon)21:40 No.17341716
    >>17341700
The thread is archived on suptg if I'm not mistaken, so who knows. Maybe some of the stuff will get into v3, it's an entirely different book after all.
    >> Black Mesa Janitor 12/26/11(Mon)21:55 No.17341852
    >>17341700

There were a *lot* of good lines in that thread. But not every line that is good on its own work well as a fluff bit in the PDF. I was trying to keep the viewpoint speaks consistent, and the "ich liebe dich" didn't fit in well. I also already had built up the death of Hikari Moto as a thing, and felt that two powerful yet unrelated death scenes would just cheapen both. Which was the last thing I wanted to do.

As for the silly/badass quotes? Some of them were genuinely good as well. But there I ran into the problem of generated expectations. If you try to play AdEva and expect it to be a game of lighthearted badassery... it can be done. But the rules don't lean in that direction.

So don't mistake me not using something for me not liking it.

It didn't make a very good Asset. It showed up in every campaign, it didn't customize well, and it was something that most Manufactured took by default, giving them plot importance in their campaign above the other players as an easy buy.

This is not to say Angel Hybrid does not exist. Instead, you will find a much longer description of it at the end of the Adam's Children chapter. There, you will find a much more in depth description of Angel Hybrids in your game, as well as the tools to build your own Angel Hybrids from scratch based on a combinations of Powers, Tells and Situations.

Your Power is what being and Angel Hybrids allows you to do that is special.

Your Tell is what makes you different from a normal person in an obvious way.

Your Situations has to do with how many people know you are an Angel Hybrid, and how that impacts your character.

    First of all...

    >More like every dev who voiced an opinion except one, all 12 or so players in games currently running it, and the various other people that guy apparently shows on the side

Just because they didn't voice an opinion in the Dev channel while you were on doesn't mean they liked your work. Many of us (who, granted, are a lot less active in Dev, but who do work on the system) really didn't care for a lot of your work. I may not always agree with BMJ's mechanics either, but I agreed with him on cutting your weapon concepts, for example. He was right, they didn't fit.

Secondly? AdEva is BMJ's game, he can do whatever the hell he wants with it. He's always had the final say, and you're apparently one of the few people who never understood that concept. If he asks for help, he's entirely within his rights to say he doesn't like it and do something else instead. You took a ton of work on yourself, by your own choice, and you should have known that the chance existed he would turn it down. It was never a democracy. You're the only one who has gotten so worked up over him doing any of this stuff.

If you don't like it, there are much more mature ways to respond than the way you are now. Right now, you're baiting e-drama and defaming BMJ and everyone else who have helped him out while pretending to take the moral high ground.

This won't do any good, I know, but I'm tired and cranky and god damnit, someone has to call him out on this bullshit.

I'd probably use the Natural Weapon rules in the 1.1 myself; no offence, BMJ, but as presented, your Evas' Nat Weapons aren't really all that up to scratch, at least against late-game Brute Angels. Everything else is good though, at least on a first readthrough.

    Yeah, BMJ is pretty tits.

Sure, having one central figure running a project might cause some upsets (like tonight, or any other time someone else thinks their way is somehow more preferable) but having someone actaully running the show keep things going when any other project who devolve into crazy internecine bitch dicking. ...Which is exactly why so many of our projects never seem to go anywhere, while this one has been kicking for three straight years.

I've been through so many release and alpha and beta and proto versions of this game the past 2 years that I start to get a little confused as to what goes where.

Honestly, it's a homebrew system. If you want to homebrew it some more, try it out and see if it doesn't break. We just want to provide you with the best basis to do everything you need to do, if you want to do more, go for it.
