260 KB Ashcan' Pete Has Arrived in Arkham, MASS. Continued storyteller !!QSvwrQMMkoH 01/03/12(Tue)19:24 No.17416374
    Cont. from http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/17405102/

The Story So Far: When a man has lived on the streets as long as you have, you see things. Things that would drive braver men screaming into the night. But you also learn to be quiet, to stay hidden, and to play stupid if all else fails. It also helps to have a good dog, like Duke, to scare away the meaner elements of the street.

Unfortunately, this time, You can't hide, and there's nothing Duke can do to protect you. Your nightmares have been growing steadily worse over the last month, driving you all the way here... to Arkham.

You came to deliver a message, from a dying convict to his rich high society sister. But then things all went bad, deadly bad. You nearly escaped that... thing in the chapel of the Esoteric Order of Dagon and it's likely dead. The Order men who run the town are out in force, the police think you killed a man, and you might well have if Deputy McClain doesn't pull through. And just went you arrived on the doorstep of your only sure thing in this town, Mary-belle Shaw, the sky exploded on top of it all. The E.:O.:D.: has summoned something better left alone and Professor Roger Dunn has an ancient Babylonian artifact and some crazy scheme to break into the jail house! But you're not one to turn from those in need, never have yet.

    Possessions:
    'Irish Walking Stick'
    Guitar
    Copper Breastplate
    1 bottle of whiskey
    $2.75
A Police issue five shot revolving chamber pistol

Your hearing is coming slowly back and even Duke seems a bit better as Roger pulls the stolen Deputy Wagon into the Arkham police station. There are no police vehicles in the lot, just two civilian vehicles near City Hall in the next lot. You can hear screams and shouts all around, the town seems to be in chaos.

    What do you do?

    GET TO THE RADIO.

Dismount and run for the station to get our task completed

    Sweet you're back!

Scout out the station, there might still be someone in there coordinating the police effort amidst the chaos. Ask Roger, maybe he has an idea for getting in unnoticed.

As you dismount, you ask Roger Dunn in a loud voice "Wha' is the plan, in 'ere Roger? Just walk in through da' two front doors?" You scratch at your beard, flaking away dried blood.

"Exactly right, Peter. The police have no idea that Mary-belle and I are involved and so we should be able to walk right inside with ease. It's not like they are at full staff right now. You do still have that flute, don't you? Would you play a ditty now so I can get an idea of the range?"

He wants you to play the flute. What do you do?

    NO!

Oh god the things we saw creep into our brain when we played that flute. I'd rather use it only when we have no other choice.

Doesn't the flute hurt our sanity and stamina?

I'd say no to playing it for now, and if possible tell him about the tone as accurately as Pete can if playing the flute does hurt us. Tell him playing the thing makes you nervous or somesuch.

You have decided against playing the flute in the parking lot, warning Roger against meddling too much with dark powers. Roger quickly agrees. "Of course, of course Peter. Just make sure that when the time comes, you are ready to perform, eh? This is going out county wide after all!"

He adjusts his coat and takes Mary-belle by the arm. "Just follow us in and don't take your cap off. With any luck no one will be the wiser. Let's go!"

You tuck the pistol into one coat pocket and the flute into the other. You are carrying your oak walking cane with the bear headed handle. As you enter the Arkham police station through the two double doors you realize that the station is not empty at all, just empty of police. Two exasperated clerks are manning phones non-stop and the calls keep on coming in. One of them eyes your group as you enter "Are you here for as an Emergency volunteer, Professor? Go right in, the Mayor is trying to get the broadcast system up and running." She gestures vaguely towards a back room.

The station is otherwise deserted, and you notice a large vaulted room clearly marked "Armory" next to a locked door marked "Evidence Control." Beyond that you can hear a man cursing under his breathe in the last room, and several people frantically working on something.

Roger begins heading for the back room, with Mary-belle in tow. You pass a very vague and half-finished drawing with a caption reading "The Drifter 'Ashcan' Pete, Thief and Murderer on the loose!" The picture is far too sinister to be you, exaggerated with an evil sneer and a furled brow. What do you do?

Just keep after Roger and get to the radio station. Keep the Armory in mind, just in case this flute thing doesn't work out as planned.

You follow Roger into the back office just as the Mayor of Arkham is saying "... tell people what to do! It's our duty, by the Father and the Mother. Professor Dunn, glad to see you alive! And Mrs. Shaw so glad you are unharmed. Professor, can you take a look at this infernal machine? It just won't work I tell you!"

The Mayor barely glances in your direction, though you certainly notice some things about him. You notice he is a fat and little man whose legs look too short for his body, and his arms too long. His skin has an unhealthy pall to it, and his eyes remind you of a fishes eyes, wide and black and staring.

Just then, you hear the door of the police station barge open but you cannot see who came in. Roger goes to examine the broadcast system, a wall of dials and levers with a microphone near the middle.

You hear a commotion outside, what do you do?
    >> storyteller !!QSvwrQMMkoH 01/03/12(Tue)19:58 No.17416649
As you contemplate your next action, Roger says "The antennae must be fried from the impact! Were you broadcasting when the meteor broke the atmosphere? It could have cause an electrical discharge which fried some important component. I fear I will have to open up the casing and have a look at the fuses."

Roger Dunn looks frantically back at you and shurgs helplessly.
    >> storyteller !!QSvwrQMMkoH 01/03/12(Tue)20:00 No.17416672
The commotion gets louder outside. You hear heated words exchanged and then stomping feet coming directly towards the room you are in! The door barges open and you are suddenly standing face to face with a red-faced, irate Remy Sanford!

Duke is luckily outside in the car. You turn your head away quickly, pretending to have dropped something and amazingly, Sanford does not recognize you! He stomps into the office and right up to the Mayor.

"Harvey, we need to talk. Now." says Sanford

The Mayor seems to shrink a bit under the gaze of Sanford and says "Of course, Mr. Sanford. Sure. Roger, you tell me the minute this... this thing is up and running, would you? Right this way, Mr. Sanford." The Mayor leads Remy Sanford, still regaled in his fish robes and cap, out of the room. You peer out to see a large gathered crowd of E.:O.:D.: members.

    What do you do?

As you stand in indecision, you DO hear Duke, all of a sudden. He's barking out front, going mad from the sound of it. Just then, Professor Dunn says "I was stalling for time, Peter the relays are fine. It was just out of tune but I have the correct radio bands now. Get ready to play your heart out!"

You hear a crunching of metal and a yelp of pain from Duke outside! Do you play the music? Do you rush to the aid of your oldest friend?

So be it. Mary-belle quietly shuts the door and locks it, snuffing out Duke's howls of pain. Roger keys the microphone, and immediately the loudest emergency warning you have ever heard begins to play. "Be-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeert. Be-eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeert!"

The sound stops and he holds the keyed microphone out to you. Before you begin to play, he jerks it back and says into the microphone "This is Ashcan Pete, playing the Song to Save the World With. Hit it, Peter!"

    And you begin to play.

You wake up and it's raining blood. You key your battlecom synch line with a retinal twitch and it notifies you that high intensity scatter bombs have vaporised nearby towns, filling the atmosphere with a haze of human bio-matter. You grab a hunk of roasted rib meat you personally took from the corpse of a dead Grenden rebel collaborator. You remember that she had silver hair and whimpered as you slit her throat. The meat is cold and chewy. You wash it down with collected rain water and hardly notice the bio-matter soup mixed in with it.

With a quick scan of the orbital tracker-finder satellite swarms you can see you are in no immediate danger. You go back to sleep, dreaming of whimpering blonde collaborators.

Suddenly, you are aware of 187 separate realities in which your consciousness currently inhabits, all at once. The myriad of Petes, Peters, Peppers, Pattys, Paddys and Poppys flows over you, 187 moments of light and cold, cold space.

Nearby, something dies and you can feel it go, tears of happiness spring to 187 faces across 187 timelines and realities. Suddenly, a face out of the light, a massive face of galactic proportions and it's eye is as large as a star and it is looking right. Into. You.

    "Catalog/request/biological/terran/Ashcan Pete.

You wake up. You all wake up, and for an instant you are simultaneously 187 people. Then, a flicker, a stumble in the dark and you are once again in Arkham, MASS. and no where else at all. Duke is licking your face, whimpering. Even now, the memory of what came before right now begins to fade. Your hands are shaking and you realize the entire station is ghostly calm. Nearby, Professor Dunn and Mary-belle Shaw are shakily getting to their feet. You stumble into the hall and see everyone in it lying prone unconscious.

"My god!" Says Mary-belle "Are... are they all dead?"

"No," whispers Professor Dunn. "They are asleep, unless I am mistaken. And they will sleep a very long time indeed..."

Over the course of the next several days the story of the "Arkham Radiation Poisonings" makes national news. "Comet Attack, Martian Invaders?" read the tabloids. Over 187 people were struck into a permanent sleeping condition. The exact number of members in the Esoteric Order of Dagon. Doctors are baffled, claiming none of them have any physical injuries. Rumors surface weeks later that the "Arkham Sick" suffer from horrible nightmares, a condition from which it is impossible to wake them.
    >> storyteller !!QSvwrQMMkoH 01/03/12(Tue)21:05 No.17417174
You stayed on at the Shaw residence for a month, recuperating. Duke had a broken leg and a few broken ribs from some terrible monster like the one in the Chapel. Seemed you played your final tune one last time. Heh, your final tune. You just don't have the heart to play music, anymore. Not with the memory of that otherworldly tune in your head.

But then, you heard a Jazz track on the radio and it caught your interest something fierce. You long for New Orleans, for the balmy weather and lazy days on the beach. You packed your things after dinner and are just getting ready to slip out the door. You can't tell Mary-belle directly, she would never let you go. So you leave a note instead.

"Not suited for domestic life, I am afraid. I'm off to the open road again, may the wind ever be at your back. Pete. Ps: I'll write when I get a chance."

And with that, you slide open the bay window in your room and slink out onto the lawn. Duke wags his tail as he licks your hand. Together, you walk off again, into the dark of the night.

    - THE END -
