    87 KB X-COM: UFO Romance - Thread 2 Izuminous !!1xS78LJA28r 01/09/12(Mon)11:45 No.17476162
So, uh, this might actually be a thing.

X-COM: UFO Romance is a terrible idea that started as a joke drawthread request: A Visual Novel based on the original X-COM, where you play as an X-COM rookie and can date several girls who are also members of X-COM. This ballooned into a thread over the last 2 days brainstorming ideas, and we might actually be on the road to making something from this idea.

The 5 girls we thought up are:
    >A Tsundere Russian Squad Leader
    >A Israeli Tomboy who wields an Auto-Cannon
    >An American Interceptor Pilot
    >A Shy Nerdy Japanese Engineer who also operates the Tank
    >A Sophisticated British Scientist

The game would go from near the start of the war (X-COM still using standard rifles) all the way up to Cydonia. Before Cydonia every character has a chance to die (except the girl whose route you're on) and at Cydonia everyone gets another chance to die INCLUDING your girl.

The game would be mostly narrative-driven, but the player has four stats: Marksmanship, Athletics, Tech Knowledge, and Psionics, which you can train at various points in the story, and you also have stress which you gain from making bad decisions, and leads to MORE bad decisions.

There's a lot of info that is covered in the previous thread, such as some preliminary character bios, which is archived here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/17458104/

So at the moment we're trying to think of events that will happen in the girls' stories. The missions that you get sent out on are the same, but events would of course be influenced by your relationship with one of the girls.

tl;dr: X-COM Dating Sim, what do?

Did you discus their uniforms/outfits? I missed the end of the last thread, so I don't know if it got brought up.

We know that our Squad Leader girl will be wearing Personal Armor in combat all the way up to the end of the game, but what about everyone else? And what about what she wears back on base?

I'd suggest the default overalls being her, the tomboy's, and the pilot's casual uniform back on base. The scientist and the nerdy girl aren't combat personell, so they'd obviously get to wear other stuff.

Also the heavy girl needs to upgrade to a Power Suit at some point

If you REALLY want an alien-human hybrid choice then how about this:
Have it as a 'secret' goal. One which you have to complete some objectives in order to even get on her path, say...
On one mission you have a stance to find some alien bio-tech which the scientist girl can use to create the creature. In order for her to use her DNA you have to be on her path, or you can use your own (maybe you can use other girls but I think that might be puching it). In order to engage in a dialog with the being you have to have some psionics. She can be used for two endings:
Good ending where you save the day and you and and your alien wifu can create a dialog with the mastermind behind the attacks and bring peace to earth and a new dawn for humanity is born.
Bad ending is when she temps you enough to ally yourself with the aliens and kill off XCOM and bring humanity to slavery while you become a regent of earth (or whatever).
    >> Anonymous 01/09/12(Mon)12:06 No.17476307
    >>17476294
Alternatively, just have a betrayal path, unlocked by fighting psionic aliens too many times.

EVERYONE has a chance to die on Cydonia, so yeah. Not enough marksmanship? You dont get the option to push him out of the way of the shot because you don't spot the sectoid. Not enough athletics? You try but he eats plasma anyway.

The choices to avoid deaths are going to be brutally hard. Unless you cheat by reading a guide, there is no way you won't have at least one or two casualties by Cydonia

Yeah, the deaths are going to be pretty bad, but handled tastefully rather than going for maximum gore. Judith (tomboy girl's) pre-Cydonia death chance is her getting zombiefied and having a Chryssalid pop out of her on a Snakeman Terror Mission.

Not sure about final cast size. We're sticking to the 5 girls (it'll be complicated enough doing 6 routes with all the branches for potential deaths as is), but secondary characters are all up in the air at the moment.

That's related to the Scientist lady's death chance. An Ethereal prisoner escapes somehow and mind controls her. If you try to use your psionics to break the Ethereal's hold on her but you aren't strong enough, you only weaken its control enough for the Scientist lady to turn her pistol on herself. Or if you're a bastard or your stress is too high, you just outright shoot her yourself. It's easier to save her in that scene if you make a choice earlier in the chapter which lets you happen to have some shock prods available at the time.

Well, asshole decisions like that (but not on that scale) will be required to save every girl on a non NewGame+ playthrough, as you wont have high enough skills otherwise.

For example, having the shock prod is the easy way to save the scientist lady, but you have to offer to help carry supplies from the skyranger instead of hanging out with Heavy, and it'll be drowned in other choices which seem more like they'd affect the event but otherwise are unrelated

Easy...to really hit home the horror and fear of an actual alien invasion. I Meant Geniune gut wrenching pain as the people on your squad, the civilians you are trying to protect and your loved one is blow away, stripped of their mental functions or tore apart by a cosmic monster from beyond the stars.

The entire point being THIS is real war against a scary foe we 'at this point in the series' have never faced. Deaths should have a real impact on a persons psyche, just ask any soldier that has gone to war.

Honestly, sorry that you guys say "FAP BLOOD FAP." but try not to project too much of your desires on something I didnt word too carefully.

But yes...geniune suffering and horror in a Scifi War sim.

Will the aliens be all mysterious, or will there be a red Muton Commander like in the intro? Also a main Sectoid leader, and some Ethereal dickbag?

I mean, being able to talk to them should be fun. Like capturing a Snakeman scientist (who smuggles Chryssalid eggs on-base) and he's being all sssssnakeman like and just being a general fuckface and suddenly, bam, zombies everywhere. It could be one of the climax missions prior to Cydonia.

    - If its presence helps enticing arousal, it's a kink.

Actually, there's no "sometimes" about it. What "fetish" REALLY means is having a sexual fixation on something that normally doesn't inspire sexual thoughts. As an example, bukkake is not a fetish because it's expected to be sexually arousing. Getting hard and jerking off to a fire hydrant IS.

Exactly this. The goal is to make it IMPOSSIBLE to save two of them on Normal.

The Leader is fairly easy to save eary; all of your opportunities to save her are based on total skill (add all four up; check vs. set number). All you need is a lot of general experience and skill.

The other four, however, are a bitch to save because they demand max in a skill; some early. Shooting a Chryssalid off the Tomboy is the 'moonshot'; through three windows, two houses and at night, halfway across the map.

If you fail, it's the approach where the dread builds. You heard her cry out and saw the shadows struggling, then one more on. As you apporach, at some point, her zombie emerges from the darkness.

At Cydonia, the Leader has a very demanding set number to save from a Chrysallid tackle; each of the others demands a max skill and another near max (100 and 75) to make decisions, as second in command, that keep them from being killed.

For instance, Marksmanship and Tech Knowledge to figure out which tower on Cydonia is the Hyperwave Trasmitter; by taking it down, they cannot scramble the fighters and the pilot has managable numbers to deal with while flying top-cover in the Ellerium drop-tank equiped Firestorm.

    >Ellerium Drop-Tanks

Because Fighter Pilots don't drive the bus. And because Ameicans love fuel-ineffecient vehicles.

Well I've got a training system working fairly well, even including the ability to lock out Psionics training until later in the game. It'd be easy enough to bosh in the ability for scenes for when you hit milestones on a skill as well.

It's just placeholder graphics stolen from another game, some godawful dialogue for the sake of seeing it work, and the menu to choose wether to train, relax, or view stats, and to pick whichever skill to train if you pick training.

The question is, does anybody actually care enough to actually really want to see it, and if so where would I host the file?

Sure, but I think they should both be male. Quartermaster being a bulky and muscular yet always cheerful guy, but gets serious when there's work to be done.

I see the Commander as being more of a suit. Obviously not scrawny as he'd be from the military as well, but not very muscular. The kind of guy who you'd expect to see casually adjusting his tie before speaking. Means well and everyone knows it, but everyone still moans about him behind his back simply because he's the boss, and who doesn't moan about their boss from time to time? Might be an awful idea, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Even if this might be sparked by the success of Katawa Shoujo, it seems like a hilarious, yet oddly compelling idea. If you can pull this off, I will seriously salute you and play the heck out of it.

Moreover, if you have Jo drawing for you... holy shit, the amount of victory is unparalled.

    Seconding some ideas presented here:
    1) Better not to be both comedic and tragic. I feel that a tragic demeanor would be better for the game - in X-Com your soldiers die. A lot. A VN wherein this aspect is not present would be straight-out heresy towards the original. This doesn't mean that humor is completely forbidden of course.
    2) The character concepts seem nice. You could have one of the characters (possibly the american interceptor pilot) be a Yugoslavian conflict veteran. Like the afganistan conflict, it would be a topical event that would tie the game to 1999.

Also, as a person who's been involved in realtime graphics programming for some 15 years now, I would have been happy to offer my help as a coder. However, you seem to already have someone up to the task, and VNs do not take that much effort in the code department. Better to concentrate on my own projects.

I wish you the best of luck!

Him and filho rossi were the ultimate squad badasses, filho took down every alien he came in view with, and they all missed him, no trouble, so heres what happned with milan. He gets into a field, and there must be EIGHT FUCKING CYBERDISKS around, at the end anyway. He starts blasting off, and kills FIVE CYBERDISKS WITH ZERO HELP WHATSOEVER, THEN, he gets shot down, unconcious by one. Filho rushes over to save his ass, killing 3 snakemen along the way.
