    Mission 2
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=House%20and%20Dominion

    You are Sonia Bethany Reynard,
daughter of a middle class merchant and Rookie Corvette Pilot for the House of Jarik-Dremine and you expecct your second combat mission will be coming up soon. Your current ship is a Houses Standard Corvette armed with 2 Phase cannon turrets, your wingman Mike pilots a similar ship while the third pilot in your squad Alex has a Daggar Class, currently out of action for another day undergoing repairs.
You three make up the third squad of a 12 ship squadron.
Your commanding officer is Knight Lt Dayton who leads units into battle from the bridge of a Light Cruiser.

Dice Rolls: As a rookie pilot you're still relying more on luck than skill. Most rolls will be for maneuvers, either to evade or to help your gunners land a hit. Your corvette is designed with abusive inexperienced pilots in mind, because of this bad rolls wont necessarily kill you but there will be some 'not as planned.'

It is early in the morning and you are fast asleep after a busy day yesterday. Flying around, shooting and getting shot at, stopping a fight between some pilots and mechanics, and finally reading.
One minute you're dreaming about boxing against some stuffed starship toys the next you're waking up from alarms blaring.
"Emergency. All ship crews to their stations. Emergency." announces the cold emotionless voice of the station computer.

"Aww crap, I'll have to run all the way to the ship." You realise, and drag yourself out of bed and into your jumpsuit, grumbling about military bullshit. Glancing over at the clock, it reads 4 AM station time.
You're about to hit the wall mounted com panel near the door then realise you'll need your own comlink and check your pockets for it.
"This is Reynard to Corvette Eight bridge, what's our status?" You ask stifling a yawn.

The ships Navigator, a woman whose name you still cant remember answers.
"Our squadron has been put on alert. The station recieved a Distress signal a few minutes ago from a ship under attack. All other forces are currently busy or engaged. The Knight Lt wants us underway in the next five minutes."

"Any chance someone could grab me a coffee?"
"We have stim drinks up here if you need them but they dont taste great. Please dont wast time and get over here."

    >YOUR ORDERS? (Get to the bridge ASAP, detour for coffee, other?)

Coffee wasnt really all that important, maybe the stim drinks mentioned will only taste as bad as really strong or old Coffee? You could live with that.

You take off at a dead sprint down the corridor then slow down to make sure you have your bearings. Before long you find a lift that will drop you off near the docking port for your corvette.

As you charge aboard the outer hatch begins to close behind you. The sound of docking clamps letting loose carries through the hull and you pick up the pace. Another few seconds of running gets you to the bridge where everyone else is at their stations. You skid to a stop realising you have no shoes or boots on, just some socks with an anti-slip layer on the bottom.
    Whoops.

"Pilot Sonia, I am engaging auto-undocking now, please take your station." As you sit down and adjust your seating to make up for a lack of shoes the auto pilot backs the ship out of your berth and brings your vessel around.
"Taking control." You announce once the ship is clear. Bringing up the sublight engines you join the others as they move out of orbit, trying to get into a rough formation. Once you feel you're in position you take a moment to throw your headset on and turn on the retinal HUD.

This early in the morning it feels more like a torture device for the eyes.

"Align for jump." Orders the Lt "Transmiting data now. Watch your spacing."

"Jump data recieved and plotted, distance approximately 50 LY, jump level three. Core is active." The navigator turns to you and tells you to 'Punch it.'
You nod. Rather than carefully brining the ship up to 5G acceleration as before you slam the throttle forward. The other woman waits one second then pushes the throttle down on her own station.

The FTL entry is instantanious this time rather than the drawn out process you've previously seen. On the downside the initial shaking is much worse this time, rattling you in your seat for a couple of seconds. Other than that the jump isnt nearly as disorienting until you notice how fast the ghost stars are flashing past.

16 seconds later you pop into real space without any kind of warning from the navigator though the displays all read jump completed on time. You are only 20,000km distant from the other ships in your unit this time. Your navigator does not seem amused at this minor improvement in jump accuracy.

"The distress signal has cut out." Reports the sensors officer as you attempt to drink one of the stim packs. Blegh, it tates like pure caffine that somebody's tried to cover over with cherry Liquorice.

The Knight LTs voice crackles over the headset "All ships align to 56 degrees starboard, inclination 32 degrees relative to entry vector."

In the distance you pick up a long cylindrical starship about 5km long by 900m wide. The aft drive section bulges outward slightly, giving it an odd shape. Its engines dont appear to be lit.

"Citadel class luxury liner." Says the Chief.
"I thought that line was cancled because of defective structural frames." Comments the navigator
Seriously what was her name, Alice? Linda? You almost dont want to ask right now while things are busy.
"No, they just had to be repaired, the buyers were quite angry though."

"This is Knight Lt Dayton of House Jarik-Dremine, civilian vessel do you require assistance?"
There is no immediate response and the Knight repeats hail several times.
    "No response. Watch for ambush."

"Kobyashi Maru." Murmered someone over the squadron channel.
"Whoever said that shut up, its bad luck to EVER say that. I dont care if its fictional."

The squadron closes in continuing its hails.

A pilot from 1st squad speaks up. "I sure hope this isnt a trap sir. We're still down two ships that are being repaired."
"We'll make do provided nothing too extreme shows up."

The passenger liner was clearly built for the very rich, huge viewports run the length of the ship offering what must be spectacular views. With so much of the ship exposed without armor it must have shield generators out the ass.

"Still getting nothing. I'm sending a detachment of Marines over to investigate. Everybody cover me."
The Knights ship swings in close to the bow of the ship, lowering shields in preparation to launch an assault shuttle. Eight purple-white beams lance out from different parts of ths ship and strike the armor around his engines.
"Oh fuck me." Curses the LT as he rolls his ship out of danger, raising shields.

Checking where the shots came from you notice some 90m long sub-corvette class ships connected to the outer hull. The computer identifies them as personal yachts, but these ones are armed.

    You call in your report.
"Yes I see them now too. They've landed on parts of her outer hull and must have cut through to board it. Those things are armed with particle beams so we should be fine if we keep our shields up."

"Looks like slavers." someone comments and a few others confirm that sentiment.

"Okay, problem. I only have 50 marines aboard. Its not enough to take a ship that size."

"Dominion Vessels. Back off, we have hostages and will begin killing some of them if you dont follow our instructions."

"I dont believe this." mutters Dayton as he switches to an open channel. "Does the phrase 'we dont negotiate with terrorists mean anything to you?' "

"Come now we're not terrorists, just business men. We'll ransom the passengers back to you or other interested parties. Pull your ships away to a distance of 10,000 km."

"We cant get tractor locks and keep our shields up at that range." The Chief informs you.
"I call bullshit on the ransoms boss." someone speaks up.

Switching back to squadron coms he responds. "It's still plausible and not unheard of for slavers to do. I dont have much experience in hostage negotiation... actually I have no experience in it, so I'm going to contact the company the liner belongs to and check their policy. If they've got enough insurance they might be able to buy them off."

    "What if they dont?"

"Then we're back where we started. If anybody has any bright ideas while we wait feel free to bring them up. In the meantime back away to about 2,000 km."

    >can we identify what type of hardware they're using from the color of the beams.
Cheap particle beams normally used for point defense work. They can pierce armor if your shields are down but do very little damage to shielded targets.

You can see at least eight of the small ships attached to the outer hull. The rest of the squadron soon spot more bringing the total up to 14.

A man with the very precise sounding voice begins making demands over the coms.
"Dominion vessels, by backing away you have bought a temporary reprieve from executions. But it will remain temporary unless you comply with our demands. We are not unsympathetic with your position however so we will make things more interesting; Any ship crew who wishes to defect and join us will recieve a share in both the loot and ransom. There are some very rich people onboard this ship, feel free to think it over."

"Its a trick to get us to start shooting at each other." Warns the Knight. "Ignore him, thats an order. We need to figure out a way to get aboard that ship."

"This is Chief Kavos to all damage control teams, arm yourselves and prepare for a boardning action." He looks up at you. "We have enough small arms to supply a crew of 200, but we only have 80 aboard. What should we do?"

You didnt notice before but the Chief keeps his pistol in a special holster that would allow him to fire without drawing it.

Alright put together the squadron has 200 damage control crewmen cross trained in boarding actions. They're not as good as Marines but they're not hopeless. The LT also has his 50 Marines.
The Liner is currently adrift with no shields. The enemy ships dock on its exterior do have shields but your corvettes could kill them easily. The question is how much collateral damage they might cause when they explode...

I'm going for dinner, I'll be back in under an hour.

Yep, shuttle the marines over as we hide behind the knight's Light Cruiser. We have to make those manouvers look like a squadron re-organisation so as not to spark the slaver's interests.

You contact the Knight about your plan.
"Well its better than just blowing up the ship like your wingman suggests. Still, once you get within boarding range it'll get dangerous for you. You'll have to drop shields to avoid bouncing off their hull then reestablish your shield in a dome. Be prepared for hull breaches, particle beams wont crack your ship open much, but it'll basicly be like getting stabbed with a needle.
You sure you want to do this?"

"No risk no reward sir." you say.
"You have a point there. I'll start getting troops moved over, you get your drift progams set up to land you where you want."

"What's a drift program?" You ask the Chief.
"Heh. Call up your low inertia navigation program. This trick is so old most ships have it as part of its default programing, just most people dont know to look for it."

You do as he says and a new interface become available.
"Most people know about this part of the program for emergencies where you have little engine power. Look in the bottom right corner of the interface for an invisible gravestone icon. You'll be able to create drift values to make it look like we're floating dead in space or even make it appear we lost power after particular weapon strikes."

You decide against doing anything fancy and just set the program to land your ship on the side of the liner.

You contact the Knight to let him know when you're ready to get this thing started. After that its just a waiting game as troops are shuttled over. A pair of damage control team members enter the bridge and drop off a crate of small arms for everyone present. The Chief leaves for five minutes and comes back in an armored vacuum suit with a pulse rifle in hand. "I'll mind the controls for a few minutes, everyone get ready. If they counter-board us when we dock we could be in serious trouble. If you are not prepared to fight be prepared to die."

There's a set of storage lockers just outside the bridge with similar looking gear. It seems to be one size fits all and yours is a little musty but you eventually get the suit and armor to fit.

"Uh... Chief Kavos I havent fired a weapon outside of basic." you admit.

"You'll be fine." he assures you as everyone gets back to their places.

"Knight Dayton says all of the marines and available troops are aboard." Reports the coms officer.
You pull your helmet back enough to throw your headset back on.

"Pilot Sonia, can you hear me?"
    "Yes sir."
"Good. We're going to create a distraction to hopefully get you closer. I want you to fire once at your wingman, I will in turn fire on your aft. Start drifting once I've fired on you. Ignore any other weapons fire."

Change to the plan. Once we are fired upon and start drifting, we want to broadcast to the slaver's that we want to join them but have been crippled by the squadron (Bluffing though!) and are at a mayday state. Once we dock, drop the marines and get ready for a fight.

To the watching pirates and slaver it must have looked like their attempt at a bribe had worked, if only for a moment. You fire on Mike's ship causing him to evade and you are in turn hit by a burst of phase cannon fire that nearly nearly knocks out your shields.
"Holy crap." you spit out as the ship is slammed by the hit. Acting fast you turn on the progrm sending you on a slow spiral towards the liner.

As you look around at the other ships of your squadron coming into view you see some of the ships from first and second squad shooting at each other.
"This is fake right? Tell me this is fake." You think out loud not really expecting an answer.
"I sure hope it is, nobody else has any more troops aboard to re-take the rest of our ships if they've gone traitor."
"There's nothing we can do about it now." Says Kavos firmly. "We have to complete our mission. Hail the pirates and tell them we've been disabled, either text or audio only. We dont want them seeing the markings on our armor."
The coms officer sends a data burst but there is no response from the Liner.

After a few minutes your start to think you're coming in a bit too fast as the target rapidly approaches.
The navigator turns to you obviously thinking the same thing. "Um, Pilot?"
    "I see it."
"Tractor beams from the liner are trying to alter our course but they cant deal with our shield. We're going to make it." reports sensors.

"Pilot Sonia, standby for deceleration and tractor grapple. I will lower the shield. All hands brace for hull breaches to outer sections."

"Decelerating NOW!" you yell out, putting power to the tractor and repulsor systems not just to halt your approach to make sure you didnt drift away. The Chief kills shield power just before the protective bubble can contact the hull.
Enemy point defense guns fire immediately sending sharp pinging noises traveling through the ship as weapons fire impacts.

One of your sublight drives takes some damage but other than that the damage seems to be confined to non-essential areas. The bottom of your ship impacts a bit harder than you would have liked and bounces off but nothing too serious. In a few more seconds you've moved your ship lining up a docking hatch and bringing it down more or less spot on.

    "We're down!"
    "All boarding teams go!"

While one group of Marines attempt to hack the door controls another readies a boarding ring with termite and explosives should that fail.
    "Door hacked, we're inside!"

The entire team of 50 Marines are able to get aboard before any of the pirates can arrive from other parts of the ship to contest them. By the time half the damage control teams have entered that's changed.

"They're trying to contain us. My Marines can punch through but we'll only be able to take one part of the ship by ourselves."

Well thats that most unanimity I've seen all day.
"We'll try to secure as many hostages as possible but this is a big ship. Just make sure to hold the door for us."

The Pirates and slavers seem to have the advantage of running around a much larger ship and they know it. While you and the boarding parties only have one means of entrance. This could turn out badly, all they need to do is strike at the docking point to cut off and isolate those forces already put aboard.
Meanwhile the Marines are able to stay mobile enough to catch enemy units unprepared or lose them in the vastness of the ship.
"We're too badly outmanned." States the Chief "Pilot Sonia, I would like to lockout the controls and key systems of the ship then take the rest of the crew to assist in the boarding action. With the extra troops it should give us the advantage we need. Should they still manage to get aboard they wont be able to take control of it."

Allright, guessing that this is an expensive luxury liner and we're in quite a crappy corvette, I'd say we should go with his plan.

Send a coded message to command informing them of our plan and advise them to check if it's acutally us when our ship undocks.

Make sure to lock the door and systems properly. Could we have it send out an alarm if somebody is trying to force the door open?

The Marines sweep as many sections of the passenger quarters as they can, finding that most of the larger wide open areas reserved for the richest have been completely emptied. They've obviously been moved to smaller sections where they can be controlled with the smallest number of people possible. Next they start hitting security check points on their way to the next most likely areas and gain access to an armory. it's been completely emptied by the pirates by the looks of it.

They make certain to warn the other teams before moving on.
"Heads up Chief, looks like they took all of the guns from onboard. No big surprise."

After 20 minutes they find and kill some unfriendlies guarding a large crew block. Its been emptied of anything non-essential and packed with half of the middle class passengers. A few security crewmen are among them.

"All teams be aware we're sending a handful of our people back to the ship dock escorting a ton of passengers. We've armed sixty of them with other weapons we've found. The rest of my team will head for the next crew block. and see what we can do there."

The areas within a few hundred meters of the ship dock are turning into a mess from the small firefights now spreading across several decks. You're just setting foot in the larger Liner when the call from the Marines comes in about the incoming passenger group.

The Chief turns to you. "We should really get those passengers back here but clearing out anyone in the way might make it easier for them to get here themselves. Or we could try to cause a distraction elsewhere to draw more pirates away."

You are armed with a Pulse pistol and Ballistic Carbine. Pistol can be set to stun, Carbine has better stopping power but has limited ammo.

This. WE have to keep on the front foot or the advantage is lost. Keep the pirates running, keep killing the bastards. Once we kill enough of em and get the hostages safely back to the corvette we can then take the bridge of the liner and get mobile.

The next Crew block the Marines hit is considerably more difficult to take, losing six of their number in the process. The do manage to find more of the middle class passengers and crew. Several from this group are retired veterans from different Factions explaining the increased security. After arming as many of this group as possible they send them off towards the ship dock as well leaving only 14 Marines to continue on, the rest helping in the escort.

"Got another group of passengers on their way Chief. Be aware my Marine contingent is advancing closer to the bridge now where we hope to find the uper class passengers. If we dont report in we've run into superior enemy numbers and probably bought it.

You listen to the report as well as you follow the Chief, and ten Marines. The bridge gunners from your ship are right behind you.
"You never appreciate being able to watch your back until you've been stuck firing guns that cant aim behind you."

"Contacts up ahead." Warns a Marine and everyone ducks for cover.

"Now!" Shouts a marine over the helmet coms and everyone ducks out from cover to open fire.
Several pirates are taken by surprise, being dropped by accurate fire from the Marines. You yourself find the recoil from the Carbine to be a bit too much throwing off your aim most of the time.
Cursing quietly you unholster your pistol with your left hand somehow scoring a headshot. You mess up a few shots in your enthusiasm but manage to land one more kill.

"All targets eliminated, lets move." shouts one of the Marines even before the last body can hit the floor. One lags behind performing confirmation kills.

The next area you enter is one of the high class zones the other team of Marines had breezed through. It's full of fountains, sculpted trees and foot bridges along with forcefield based energy lifts.
"I dont suppose we could loot any of this stuff without being caught." One of your gunners comments.

You see movement off on the other side of the large room and duck to the right, trying to call out 'get to cover' at the same time. A thick blue beam the size of your arm passes through one of the Marines to your left striking him in the upper chest and bursting out his back and right shoulder. The entire upper torso explodes from the heat and shock of the weapon sending Chief Kavos and another Marine diving aside. One of the gunners goes down from some kind of high velocity bullet to his leg and a couple other bullets glance off your armor.

"Scatter! Motherfuckers have an anti-tank gun!" Shouts someone as you throw yourself behind the base of a large holographic statue. After that gunfire fills the whole room, some yours some theirs. You dump the remaining ammo in your carbine mag into their general area you saw the fire coming from then run behind a small store. The large blue beam hits the statue you were behind before which explodes in a fireball.
    Holy shit.
"Stay away from the holographics!" Kavos yells over the channel "If they're hit with plasma beams they'll overload!"
You make a mental note to yourself to stay away from them.

"Marines here we'll try to get close enough to put a grenade into the appartment they're firing from. Everybody else cover us."

You rush out from cover headed for the next building firing your pistol as you go. What does this thing have like 100 shots? Something hits your helmet visor putting a spiderweb of cracks across it and you drop behind a planter before you can make it to the building. Getting your feet under you again you stick the pistol above your cover and fire away, probably not hitting anything. Making it to the next building you notice the plasma weapon hasnt fired again. There is a sharp crack from an explosive going off then the shoting tapers off.

    "I think we got 'em."
"Move up but watch your spacing, they might not all be dead."

You step out of cover and head for the appartment, trying to keep near anything that might stop weapons fire if you need it. A pair of Marines get up the ramps to the appartment first and a few more shots ring out.

    "They're dead for sure now."

"This is marine squad four with the first group of middle class passengers, the situation clear?"

You catch up to the Chief who looks you over then surveys the area.

"I think its safe to bring them through now." he comments. "Lets do a sweep back to the ship ahead of them just to be sure."

The pair of marines return from the appartment carrying some captured weapons. One holds up something that looks like a bazooka. "Fuel cell is cracked, but the sniper rifle and SMG's are still good."

The return trip back to the dock is quiet but that only keeps everyone more on edge after the ambush earlier. Your gunner, Yajgo, despite having his leg wound sealed has still put a tourniquet around his upper leg to make sure he doesnt bleed to death.
Your wounded are handed off to the medics and you check in with the others around the dock.
The Pirates have fallen back, some toward the ships docked farther aft, others towards the bridge.

You are starting to get worried when the most distant party of Marines call in.
"We got some of the upper class passengers but the really wealthy ones have already been moved somewhere else. Maybe to the ships. We're returning, we just dont have enough people left."

The problem of enough troops seems to be solving itself as the passengers and crew arrive. All of the Children are immediately put aboard the corvette and anyone with military experience is armed with the spare weapons. You dont have enough body armor but everyone is doing what they can to scrounge some.

Of those that came aboard with you there are approximately 150 damage control personel left, 38 marines and 57 crewmen after casulties. With the extra passengers brought back you now have 30 security personel and +200 armed militia. There are 1,500 other civilians now in the docks area split between three decks. The second group of rescued middle class have not yet arrived.

And I am burning out. This will have to continue another day.
