I sure hope someone remembers this, at least.
Anyway, after computer failure after computer failure and a switch to decidedly hosting files on google docs combined with my raw inability to focus, a friendly fellow popped onto #Velocity on IRC Rizon and kicked my ass into gear. So, here we are, with me actively working on this old project: VeloCITY, the game about rolling around at the speed of sound, understanding the concept of love, and free love being too tame for him.

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aQyp0B4JyVhX3Ls41_hGQ2C45am5SiEdHUHQrlQD6xA/edit

I've not fully updated it yet and it isn't as shiny as some previous attempts but, at least it's something to flip through for now.

The only thing lacking right now is Perks, which I haven't written down or -entirely- conceptualized yet. They'll be the hardest part since I intend to have a tree of perks for every skill: think like charm trees in exalted, only less game-breaking. Most of the other stuff I'm still in the process of writing down or clarifying, so feel free to grill me as hard as you want on those matters.

Also I lost all my Jet set radio pictures to post in threads.

I'd be happy to turn my game design cap towards this project again. I've been needing something to get back into the swing of things.

Oh, fuck yes, I remember this. I was always interested, but never had a chance to check it out.

Tell you what, my uni's RPG club is having a con in a few days. Pitch me a quick oneshot I could do for it using this system.

I'm always ready for more help, or at least people ready to keep me in gear. I'm pretty terrible at keeping at it if left to my own devices.

Plus, there are a few other loose ends that still need fixing; There's no designed character sheet, no real art other than that ripped straight out of JSRF or air gear (though I may be able to convince someone I know for a cover)

VeloCITY is an RPG I've made with massive fluff-help from /tg/ brainstorming ideas for flavor. The system itself is designed to be seperated from the fluff, and generally simulate any sort of explosive physical action you can jam into it. The way I'm trying to make the routes system work is anywhere from races to walking the ring in boxing to basketball, football, boufbowl, buggy ball- though the focus is generally going to be on racing with personal-scale vehicles like bikes, rollerblades, skateboards, and free-running. Plus all of the chase scenes and urban chaos that come with it.

    - Businesses
    - Famous Faces

    - Radio Stations
    - Tech & Gear
    - Zones
    - Writefaggotry

This is what, the 3rd or 4th renewal it's gone through?

My suggestion would be to simplify the dice mechanic a little more. It's not very complicated, but for a game like this, where you've got a fair number of factors to consider it seems like it would be better to follow the old maxim KISS.

Then again I liked one of the first versions better, but it's your baby Nothing Man, you do with it what you will.

Not that this version -isn't- confusing, but it's also simple enough to be able to get quick results from as a basis.

I'm partial to Sneakman myself, but yeah Teknopathetic is a close second. Naganuma's music from Sonic Rush is pretty good too (and being so obviously his work doesn't really fit in a Sonic game).

I see that Tricks are being used as the term for anything you can do on your turn, though I am wondering if actual tricks will play into VeloCITY and how. Also wondering if there might be anything more to tagging beyond what was presented in the games, like some sort of benefit for having more tagged spots in an area or something.

Tricks are more specific than that, but only barely. A trick is just a sort of action that can specifically gain Style. A complete outline of actions is underway once all the lynchpins are nailed down.

So are you still taking into account ideas? Because I have a few that sound good to my simplistic brain.
-Graffiti divided into sections, successful rolls required for completion of each sections.
-Different graffiti sizes; XS, S, M, L and XL all having higher amounts of sections and all requiring higher dice rolls for success on each section. Eg. XL has five sections, requires rolls higher than 15 for each section.
-The larger the size of graffiti, the more XP it gives.
-One of the character attributes (Graf. or something like that) adds modifiers to graffiti rolls.
-Gender should play a part in gameplay. Eg. Playing a female character gives less strength but more mobility. Playing a male character gives more strength but less mobility.
-All games are required by law to play the JSR and JSRF soundtracks at all times.
-All players must understand the concept of love.

This looks really, really awesome. Keep it up!

Here's an idea for character creation, Street Renown choices at character creation. Lower renown means you're new on the scene giving you less starting bonuses, but more freedom from cops as they don't know to watch out for you. Higher renown means you've been on the streets for longer, giving you starting bonuses but more chance of the cops descending on you quicker. This'd probably be better implemented for the players as a whole rather than individual character.

Also, possible strengths and weaknesses for each character type/kits so there's more to what type of class you pick than "It looks the coolest".
    >Skateboard

    Strengths:
-Skateboard can be used as a handheld weapon in combat.
-Allows for the possibility of attempting to multi-class as a Skater/Runner.
    -Higher jumps
-Allows for more complex grinding and wall-riding

    Weaknesses:
-More chance of being knocked off your gear due to lack of any proper restraint of rider to gear.
    -Gear can be lost easily.
    -Speed reduced by sharp inclines.
-Wider turning radius disallowing sharp turns at speed, e.g. Pulling a 180 turning left without stopping would require moving forward one grid space, left two grid spaces and left one grid space from that position to end up in the opposite direction.

    >Bikes
    -More traction and acceleration
-Heavy weight, can deflect blows and knock over pedestrians
-Can carry more materials due to baskets and shit.
-Brakes allow for a sharp 180 by spinning around on the front wheel. This requires a one grid advance to do this though.

    Weaknesses:
-Wall rides require much higher rolls.
-Cannot squeeze in the same small areas like other characters.
-Cannot perform multiple small jumps. 2 grid space straight movement is required for each jump.
-Cannot jump longer distances without a ramp.

    Continued in next post.
    >> Anonymous 01/13/12(Fri)02:33 No.17524311
    Bladers-
    -Extreme maneuverability
-Wall riding and grinding is easier
-Gives a damage bonus to kicks in combat.
    -Momentum carries longer

    Weaknesses:
-Less traction, slopes and slick surfaces decrease balance and speed.
-Hits have a higher chance of knocking players off-balance.
-Rollerblading is extremely difficult to play without dumping large amounts of stat points into balance.

    Runners-
    -Best maneuverability
    -Best combat
    -Able to climb
-Fastest acceleration. Top Speed can be made from a standing start.

    Weaknesses:
    -Lowest top speed
    -Lowest endurance.
    -Energy lost easier.
    -Short jump distances

There. Adds a bit of flavour and planning when creating characters in a gang.

Fuck Warriors. Heists and capers, all day errday.

What I want to do using this system is run a heist session.
Create an intricate, yet small environment for this to happen, make a large amount of possible variables and give the players all the relevant information they could reasonably get in character.
Then, allow the players to plan out their method, answering questions reasonably while the group comes up with a plan of attack.
Once they've got their plan all sorted out, play through it as normal to see how each step of it goes.
In terms of scenario and creating a real sense of panic and success, I'd have each situation heavily time-based. For example, this guard will be passing through this corridor at this time, the cameras pass over this patch of hallway every third turn etc. For each action-deciding round, I'd also have a time limit of around about forty seconds to help sustain the tension that is the mark of a good heist movie. If a roll fails and an aspect of the plan ends up breaking down, the players will have to improvise quickly to get the plan back on track or risk a possible breakdown of the entire plan.
All the while, I will play the soundtrack to Ocean's Eleven.
Now is that a good session idea or is that a good session idea?

Obvious gaps I saw while looking over it just now:

-Most of the Soul skills still need description, and Logic's seems a little lacking to me
-None of the skills have specialization examples yet
-The character Gear section of character creation (#5) is blank
-Perks need to really be gone into at all, but then again you mentioned that in the OP
    -The tricks section

Soap shoes would be a pretty simple modkit. Really, as long as a runner gets to a point that they learn foot-grinding, they can do it barefoot as long as they don't mind melting their feet. It'll probably be GM fiat as far as whether or not they can grind in regular sneakers or just even socks, but statistically they can.

JSRF is amazing and I love it, but i think the idea is to make this game a little broader, and open to more than just JSRF fans. We're incorporating stuff from Air Gear, Mirror's Edge, and Snow Crash's concept of Kouriers. A mechanic that narrow only rewards fans of one of the source materials.

not that it's not a good idea, it's just game-specific

Yes. That's the gist of it, 2-3 per session. Enough to buy really tiny perks, but for bigger ones you'll have to save up. Likely up to 5 per session if everyone performs well, and possibly up to 20 in a session if a critical goal is completed.

    >>17539433
No, that's stupid and dumb. Why would only mind decide all of the stats' skill gains. The closest thing to levels are going to be Ranks, which are broadly enough different eschelons of relative experience going from Rank 3 (starting character) to Rank 2 (Established riders/Jet Set Radio Future tier) to Rank 1 (Jolokia, Mozambique, Masterful riders/Air Gear tier)

I'm not sure if the ranks will actually have relative limits other than increasing the amount of XP you get per session at a given rank to compensate for the much higher median perks for that level of play.

There won't really be 'four movement styles' per se. There'll be a generic vehicle perk tree, and a runner tree. Vehicles will perform similiarly trick-wise albeit completely differently from an actual movement standard.

It's not terrible dynamic, but it also lets me jam in whatever the fuck vehicles I can come up with later and let people become proficient in them. Like scooters, or >>17508282
    whatever the fuck that is.

There might be special perks to go with certain vehicles though, but a generic tree comes first.

What if FLIP could also measure or be partially tied to Intelligence/Estimation/Patience?

During a flip you have to decide how much air time you'll have since the move requires a lot more than other moves.

I don't think it's necessarily right to say it could simulate complex things like hacking, but it could simulate someone who plans things out. You may not be the guy who's dodging cops on a mission, instead the spotter/scouter/interference/artist/party leader.

THERE I WAS! I was actually in the crowd! This was going to be amazing!
    T-minus 1 minute.
I have the stencils crammed in every pocket of my cargo pants, even the 20 or so I added on later.... plus the ones all over the inside of my Ditch Coat.

When the outdoor speakers start playing a bit a Sweet Soul Brother I'll know it's time to slap down quick adhesive stencils and clear the way.

Walls aren't that hard at surface level, but crowds sometimes like to step where you're workin'. My fave way to get them clear from sidewalk canvas is to Get My Freestylin On! You stamp out a circle and throw out a few bits of pop'n'lock, flow into liquid, or kickin crazy capoeira! You betta believe even the white colla sellouts pop a smile.

Course most of tha time you'd best be running around gettin plenty of you crew's tags ready. Can't spend all day groovin.

I know it's kinda late in the day for the map but here's one thing I remember thinking the first time I looked at the first version of the map.

The Hills are ment to be "the rich area" all the fancy houses and so on. Yet it is right alongside the highway and Industrial area. That just doesn't seem right at all.

The Suburbs giving way to indistrial ground, with a small band of cheaper housing between the two sounds more logical.
    >> Anonymous 01/15/12(Sun)07:32 No.17550569
    FLIP

Flyin high, jumpin, freakin A! The jumpers? They're the ones you call when you need a linebacker as much as a performer. STRENGTH!

Lip, smack, and plenty of cred to back it up. The best ones know how to talk and feel the mood like voodoo.
    CONFIDENCE!

Indies, everywhere, Indies. You gotta smack the pavement before you can. Once you do though? Aw damn! You'll be spinnin in the air like a flyin saucer. TALENT!

Planning, planning planning... and observation. It takes hours or some research to find a location with a window of opportunity. The best ones take their time. SMARTS!

I was delivering a cake to a customer one day, when this runner just ran straight into me from behind the corner. Of course she just said sorry a real quick and tried to get away, was probably running from someone or something, but I grabbed her leg and told her to pay for the bloody thing, I mean, it was a custom bloody one and cheapest ones are like, 500 flicks or something.

She tries to lay it off as my fault for a while, until realizes that I came from her right. Then she goes on about trying to brush it off saying she's got no money with her (though that I believe, who would carry that kind of money with her?) until she finally agrees to come with me to the client.

When we get there, everyone's surprised, as apparently the client is a friend of hers. After I explain what happens, he just looks at her labd laughs, saying something about her supposedly being better than that, to which she says something about only waking up 40 minutes ago (yeah right, it was almost six in the evening) when I comment on that.

She goes ballistic, shouting about kids these days, and so on (mind you she's about 17 I'd guess, I'm 23). Then the client says that something should be done since he did not get his cake. A small argument is born and somehowbended in a race with me going against her. If I win she pays for it and client gets a new cake, and if she wins we have to get him a new cake for free.

Now, I'm not proficient at this, use rollerblades and deliver cakes. But I thought I could beat a running kid in a little race. Boy was I wrong. I don't really know how to describe it, she was like an eagle or something, I didn't even get to the halfpoint before she had won.
But damn if she doesn't deserve it. Should have asked her number.

Most riders have a moment of epiphany.
A single moment in time when they figure out that this, this is going to be a massive part of the rest of their lives and they want that to happen. They want to be able to feel the wind in their hair, to swoop from building to building, to grind like there's no end to the rails and to fly like a butterfly.
Call me weird, but I like to collect them.

One girl said that her moment began when a group of guys with wheels took her bag. The road was winding and she said that her brain just told her to jump down, rather than chase them, find the shortcuts and stop them that way. She clotheslined the riders, took her bag back and when they started to give chase, just continued to take shortcuts and even jumped down from a building and they couldn't keep up chase and from then, she just never stopped.

One guy's was when he saved someone's life. He's been on his skates for about a year and he was one hell of a rider, but to him, it was a hobby until he came past this blazing building and he could hear someone inside. He kicked the door in and went inside, sliding and walking past fiery obstacles. Apparently, he even had to limbo-slide past a broken beam. He found a little girl, curled up, coughing like hell and crying. There was no way in hell she could be taken from the way he came in, so he cleared a path, smashed the window, built up speed, carried her and flew out of that window into safety. The girl thanked him and he visited her when she was recovering in hospital. The doctor said if he wasn't there, she might've not survived.
