Is it a bad thing to "overdevelop" a character?

And at what point does that happen?

When's the ideal time to retire them?

I'm not entirely certain what you mean with overdevelop, but if we're looking at it from the point of fiction, then charters are part of a story, and for a story to be good somethign has to happen. This in turns means things have to change, as that's how we notice that something has happened. This in turn then leads us to the fact that the story will eventually end, because with everlasting change it will stop being the same story anyway in the end.

If you instead draw everythign out towards infinity, no change an be truly meaningful, and the impact of any event is diluted to nothing. In addition, as inspiration runs dry and everything has already been done(five times) already attempts to keep things going will turn towards the completely absurd 8and that in a bad way), compare with the typical superhero comic for example.

For an RPG character I guess it's quite possible to reach the level where no-one else in your group (including the GM) can be arsed to read, listen to, or remember your backstory, and the whole thing has been taken far past the point where it can be reasonably assumed to have any impact on the game. Still, as long as you understand this and provide a condensed "the stuff that matters" for those who need to know I guess there's no harm in developing things further just for your own amusement.

You know you've overdeveloped a character when you finish...well developing them. It's the end of the original concept you came up with for the character and you end up bolting on shit to make it work. It's why fuck-tarded goals (I WANT TO SHAG CATS!!!!111!!) or poorly conceived (I am the son of Hilter) characters never last long.

The Ideal time to retire is around a few weeks after the "big event" you wanted to build up your character to. Then you can bow them out as they "reflect" upon what they have done. That way you can always bring them back later with new goals and objectives.

In partial hi-jack of the thread: Retiring Characters: Kill Them, Make them Background Fluff, Give them Cameos or Never see them again, what does TG choose?

    Depends what you mean.

Do you mean "develop" as in "add nuance to a character"? If so, then yes. It gets to a point when a character is so multi-layered that they're impossible to pin down. Some people may love this, but I find it neither interesting or realistic.

If you mean "develop" as "change over time"? If so, then also yes. You can lose everything that made them themselves.

When their story has come to a satisfactory conclusion.

Something brought your character into the "plot". Maybe they had a goal or maybe they had some reason to stick with the party, so when that's finished they're left just just going with the flow.

I DMed a 10 year game of DnD which over the course of its lifetime included a cast of over 46 players. Years would pass and old friends would leave, only to be replaced by new ambitious adventurers; but there was one player in particular who was there from start to finish, and he played a character named Daies.

Now there are a few things you need to know about development, as opposed to "overdevelop". Basically, development implies creating something, its useful or its interesting.

Overdevelop means that the development was useless, superfluous, and boring.

Daies understood this. You can't do the same thing over and over, and you can't evolve so much that you are no longer "Daies".

Over the course of 10 years his character remained fresh and innovative, it was always a joy to laugh along with him, or put on a serious face and grit up to face the hard times.

So how do you do it? How do you remain interesting for that long?

His method was simple, and that is why the story of Daies and Dowjin always had our crowds on the edge of their seats.

The first thing he understood was how to connect with people. There is a long and detailed saga about his previous adventures with the "7 Kings" which brought him to the very beginning of our campaign at ECL 9.

But to hear him explain it, his backstory was so concise and non chalant that it begged you to ask more.

    Who are the 7 Kings?

He'd say that he used to travel with a group of aventurers seeking fame and fortune, that he grew up poor and exiled, and that when they finally made it big, he was betrayed.

    How? He is asked.

He was turned into a Vampire, and then he was imprisoned while his companions became kings.

So he created story two sentences at a time. He answers a question, and then feeds you just one little bit more. You never feel overwhelmed, instead you always feel as if you don't know enough, you want to hear more.

That is number one. Make the audience want you to develop.

After you make sure that your not vomiting information nobody cares about, you have the backstory. Something interesting to start with.

Now how far can you take it before your overdeveloped?

    Number Two. Goals.

Goals are great, and as a Dungeon Master I love it when players make some for themselves instead of forcing me to spoon feed them plot.

Now I always have plenty of plot for the spoon feeding. But Daies was something else.

As soon as he began play he was driven, and active. Every step he took was one closer towards his ultimate goal.

    Revenge.

My goodness, how many of you saw that one coming?

But here is his genious. Daies' revenge was not just for Daies. Daies' revenge can be your revenge too! He made you feel like an integral part of his story.

He made friends with you, used you, joked with you, he was vocal. He didn't just stare blankly at the party waiting for them to make up their minds; he took action, and inspired everyone around him to be as independent and active as he was.

So he had a short term goal and a long term goal.

Recover one of his old weapons, which he told everyone was his "gauntlet". He never explained more than that, he made you want to follow him and figure it out.

    And that sweet revenge.

Well he got his gauntlet back. But boy was he in for a surprise.

For a while he'd been confused about the system of dates and times that the local populace had been using.

After being imprisoned for so long he wanted to know where in the world he had been taken, surely he'd been transported to a different land.

Number three. The third time its a surprise.

You know your overdeveloped when everyone can spell out your next adventure before you even begin it. Boy saves girl, kill the dragon, stop the lich, get the treasure, become the ultimate Mary Sue...

You have to keep them on their toes. Once you can't surprise them anymore, your overdeveloped.

Well, it turns out that after Daies got his gauntlet, a weapon of powerful magic that could crush mortal men in one swing, the seven people he wanted to use it on weren't around anymore. Hitsito "the Armory" became one of Daies' few friends, and explained to him, that it was over three thousand years past the age Daies described.

In his quest to find the Lord of the land he discovered that there was no unifying banner, no one proclaiming the news of a king or queen. Each Duke he met and felled, demanding information beneath his iron grip, the blood of the palace guards pooling in the halls.

Only they didn't know of the Kings he spoke about. Only the Crimson Blade and how that powerful guild was paying for their loyalty. So who was in charge?

Eventually he squeezed a name out of one of those Dukes.

    Dowjin.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/21/12(Sat)23:27 No.17626336
So Daies set out to find the fortress where Dowjin dwelled. He was accompanied by Hitsito, Minion, and Dan.

    Number four. Cool friends.

Cool friends can cover up a ton of how not cool or boring you are. Minion, for example, was the result of a "potion of instant necromancy". An aspiring wizard drew up a new spell and bottled it. Well Daies chugged half of it, and then poured the other half over the dead body of The Duke. The Duke's skeleton ripped free from its body and climbed out, a slavering undead beast that was completely loyal to Daies. However with half of the potion compromised it came out wrong. It was slightly.... Retarded.

Absolutely vicious in close combat, very bloodthirsty and hyperactive, but you couldn't get more than a couple raspy words out of it at a time.

And Dan. Dan was a ninja. Until Daies slaughtered his guild and master. Then he ressurected Dan and gave him a Gaes to serve if he wanted to remain alive.

At first there was hatred. But time and low self esteem (read: diplomacy) had a way of convincing him that this was his place in life.

Hitsito "the Armory" was well, our resident neckbeard and optimizer. Artificer by trade, and his pockets were always filled with deadly gadgets and goodies.

So they get to Dowjin's "fortress" which is more like a single level of fortifications build into one solid building depressed into the earth. The front gates have stairs leading down into a dungeon, and they're guarded. Full plate, and packing steel, the guards look like professionals. They're gear shines like the fourth of july and they're checked on every five to ten minutes.

    Time to storm the keep.
    >> The Outlander 01/21/12(Sat)23:29 No.17626360
    Keep going.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/21/12(Sat)23:40 No.17626457
Number whatever the hell were on now...

Anyway, making people feel "real" is important to not being overdeveloped. There were many many players in my games, and many many NPCs. One of the best things to hear were people asking which characters were players and which ones I just made up.

So stealth was going to be tricky. Granted they wouldn't expect a Vampire. But anything magical or supernatural was bound to be detected or noticed within minutes of entry, which in turn meant that Vampire abilities wouldn't be best.

So Daies got his pals organized, and on a count of three burst from cover and charged the open gates.

The first guard to try to speak was Dominated, while Minion pounced upon the other, digging in claws and literally rending apart his armor and the man inside. Time was of the essence. Before the entire fort had alarm bells ringing they raced down the stairs. They barely reached the bottom before they heard yelling through the murder holes that had flanked the walls they passed.

Into a hall they ran, guards ahead of them turning around in puzzlement, a maid dropping her tray of empty bowls and mugs with an audible clamor. Then Daies noticed. She was Drow. This was the foward operating base of a guild that had half the human kingdoms in its pocket.

    Number next, the plot thickens.

Dan drew steel and charged the guard on his side, and with uncanny precision buried his sword into the guard's skull through the bottom of his jaw where the helmet was open. Daies decked the next one so hard Captain Falcon would blush, caving in the skull as the body flopped to the ground lifeless.

They pressed on, attacks of opportunity at their heels, and kicked in the next set of doors. Another hall, smaller than the first, this one had archers with arrows nocked trained at the door, one of them yelled 'whats going on?'. The other fired.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/21/12(Sat)23:49 No.17626531
Behind them there was a loud commotion. High pitched screams of desperation as the burly vanguard yelled "get it off me!" followed by "that one's charmed!"

Chaos and confusion covered their rear flank.

The archer's aim was dead on, and the arrow shoots Daies right between the eyes. He staggers back a step, his head heaving backwards with an obscene crack. And then he slowly regains composure, his head tilting foward with a softer crackle of ruined spine, and a crazed grin on his lips.

"Oh god!" cries the archer, the second one yanks his sleeve "We need to get help!" and then dives into an open door. With a wave of his hand Daies slams the door shut, trapping the archer who'd fired upon him in the same room.

Before Daies was a humongous bronze door, with two dragons stylized together holding the handles shut. To the right was an open door, and to the left was a curving staircase that went up to the balcony where the archer stood. Daies pointed and yelled at Dan to get him.

Dan charged, and the archer drew his short sword.

Right at that moment the humongous doors flew open under the boot of a very pissed half dragon. His skin was dark, and his scales were silver.

    "Who dares raid MY domain?"

You can't win all the time. Too much of the same thing is boring, even when it comes to awesome. If you just awesome all the time, people will start to take it for granted, and then your "developing" redundant and boring things.

I will be skipping tons of it just to recite the best from my memory, but awesome is important.

So Daies huffs "You must be Dowjin. You don't look like much, your not even a full dragon?"

Dowjin snarls and draws his masterwork bastard sword. "I will destroy you, the bodies of your 'mates will tell me all I need to know."

With a lunge the fight was on!

Blade meets gauntlet, and sweeps over Daies' head as he ducks, the vampire gives Dowjin a vicious kick into the side of his knee, fighting dirty! But thats how Daies fought best. The knee went down loose, as the half-dragon fell with it and let it happen. A grimace and a roar, as the point of his blade tipped sideways and thrust, running Daies through.

Cackling madly through the blood that spurted past his lips, Daies grabbed the sword with his bare hand and started socking Dowjin in the face with his gauntlet. After the first two blows the dragon turns his shoulder into it and spits away the vitae running down his lips.

Then Daies realizes a tail was squeezing his ankle, and he's flipped onto his back.

The "Lord" grabs his weapon and draws it from Daies, raising it high overhead, and then yelling as he brought it down, slicing clean through him until the blade thwacks against stone.

He huffs, and wipes the blood from his nose with his backhand.

"Take the prisoners into the Dungeon, and dispose of this body..."

The maid from earlier rushes over to Dowjin and they walk from the room.

The fate of the party sealed.

Half Drow race with Silver Dragon levels. Its a long story, and as much as I love masturbating right now I'm bragging about my bro Daies.

The other characters had a blast, and did tons of fun things and had lots of "moments" both hilarious and dramatic. But from start to end the only constants in the story were Daies, and Dowjin. Also the game was very fast and we were on the ball with rules calls or winging it, so although I said his friends got thrown in the dungeon. They weren't out the action for more than maybe five minutes. Thats important, don't steal the spotlight for too long.

Unlikely Heroes. Make some enemies your friends, make some friends your enemies.

So Daies' friends were taken down into the dungeon, but when the guards returned to pick up Daies' body, it was gone.

Daies had gone into mist form and retreated from the fortress, to a hidden cove in the forest where he had hidden one of his many coffins. He went to rest. He waited. And he regenerated.

Later he rose from his deathly slumber, and returned to free his so called "friends". Or at least thats what he told them. He really just wanted to settle the score.

But when he comes back there's no guards at the front gate, nor inside at the bottom of the stairs. There are no dead bodies, and the blood still stains where they met in battle.

Something must have happened, they must be going somewhere. Perhaps they all went to the dungeons?

They'd definitely expect him to come that way, to save his comrades. So instead he stares at the double doors with dragons on it, and stalks over to it with a scowl of his own. It was his turn to kick it in. And he did so, violently. Startling the man who sat upon a throne, holding a damp towel against one side of his face while he spoke with a single solitary guard.

    "YOU?!" The half dragon yells.

    "I killed you!" He continues.

Daies smirked. "Yeah. You did. It hurt. A lot."

That was how Daies and Dowjin became friends.

It turns out that Dowjin was mobilizing to aid a Dwarven clan he owed some favors to. He also fills Daies in that all the Drow under his command here are separatists from the Crimson Blade, and the Dwarves helped accomodate them while getting some much deserved payback against their ancient foes.

So Dowjin ends up arranging missions and agendas behind the scenes and sending Daies off to war. The half dragon himself took the field a couple of times, at Daies' request, but his high charisma was much better served with matters of state. While Dowjin was a capable warlord, now that his empire had been carved out, he no longer had the time or resources to handle everything personally.

And Daies was happy to do the dirty jobs. Dowjin paid well and was very generous, so all the greedy and ambitious came. His causes were righteous and just so all the ones wishing good will came. And a merry band of all types of differing alignments gathered to Dungeons the Dragon for many many years.

Which leads me into the later parts of the story. Anybody can start off interesting, and do cool things. But what the hell do you do after years of gaming, and hitting level 20?

Why is it you don't hear that many stories about Epic level games? And beyond?

Boy did we go beyond... Next, a lesson in not jumping the shark.

Story 2 of 3. For those of you with a bedtime I'll try and hurry up here.

    Don't jump the shark.

A long time later, Daies and Dowjin were officially bro teir with each other. They trusted each other confidentally, and despite all the legends and rumors about those sinister evil undead. It seemed like Daies had truley been redeemed, and found his place in life.

It was promised to Daies that they would find information on the seven lost kinds, to give his mind peace, and also that it was his turn now to rule and venture abroad with fine comrades. He enjoyed many years of success.

Eventually they hit the pinnacle of their abilities. It seemed like there was nowhere further to go. Only gods possessed powers greater than they.

Well, one of the succubi Daies had been consorting with was princess to part of Nebaron, a small realm deep within the abysse. One of Dowjin's old friends had a demigod of a mother that had been pulling all kinds of strings to try and take out the portfolio's of her counterpart she could never be trusted, but she was very powerful.

Now Daies was owed some favors by each of the she-devils. So after the culmination of a long siege of Hell, he asked one for nothing more than the tiniest portion of a divine spark for himself and Dowjin. And from the other he asked for the smallest realm he could call his own.

After much debate it was finally given to them, and there was much rejoicing and feasting throughout their lands. They began to build bigger and better things, make plans for the future, realize their ultimate goals. They were nearing the end of their purpose. There was not much more to develop.

So Daies starts building this huge set of anti-gravity rings and gate spells in a tower format, in order to accelerate a payload of enchanted on-strike mithril ore into a final targeting gate. It will be our superweapon.

    The Planar Cannon.

Anyways, so were building this huge cannon.

Now one of the predominant religions was the Pantheon of 12. They were only powerful enough to take charge of the multiverse when banded together, as individually they were ranks 4-11. Any rank 12 or higher diety had been destroyed in great cosmic wars.

The demigod that gave Daies and Dowjin their powers had many spies everywhere, and learned about what they were constructing. She knew that if she sold them out to the Pantheon, she could use that leverage in turn to get them to help take out her -true- enemy. She was an actual player, the other gods were not.

Before Daies can finish his greatest project ever, a peal of thunder cracks across the ashen skies of the abysse where they had made their home. A valarous personage of one of the Pantheon of 12 appears before Dowjin in Dowjin's study. The man is a knight of such pure and holy energy that it was hard to believe the treachery which was about to happen.

The Knight-God lifts his hand and throws Dow back against a bookcase, holding him with titanic levels of telekinesis.

"So I hear a bunch of upstarts are up to no good? Let this be a lesson, for those who walk your path."

And that was the last thing Dowjin ever heard, as in a torrent of divine energy his mortal body exploded into motes of energy.

Now he only had time to use one divine power of his own. Sacrificing it, he created a magical scroll what would bring him back to life as a mortal, and then hid the knowledge away inside the head of a crazed scribe, and left instructions for Daies on how to find him.

It was at this point we were playing in the Comic Con San Diego suite of the RPGA in the Hyatt(or marriot?)

Surrounded by a throng of gamers at their tables. Even after 6 years (at that time) we still had an adventure that silenced the room and turned all eyes on Daies.

    My god.

    The party included:

    Daies
Destamona, Daies' sister (and rl girlfriend)
Scryver, a drow paladin/rogue worshipping Dowjin
Ko-Oh-Ri a scorpionfolk cleric, the champion of the Fire-God, both of them owed Daies favors.

Also there was Minion and Dan.

So they find out the scribe has been arrested and transferred to another city, and they decide to go low profile and cloak their divine powers lest they get smited one foot in the door.

Daies, Destamona, Dan, and Minion arrive together via teleport.

Scryver is trying to make the reandevouz from a secret entrance through the sewers.

Ko-Oh-Ri is just making a beeline for Daies across the countryside.

Daies and Destamona start walking down the main boulevard, trying to figure out the difference between the court buildings and the barracks, and where the prison was. They finally locate a side-street, with small barred windows set high into the wall. If you reached up you could touch the sill with your fingertips.

Its night time, things are mostly quiet.

"Are you Rejis, the scribe?" Asks Destamona into the barred window.

"No." comes the reply, as Daies starts to look nervous and glances either way down the street.

One by one she checks the windows until finally Rejis is found.

"Are you ready?" She asks Daies.

"Yeah, I'm ready. Lets blow this joint." He replies.

Summoning up her arcane powers, she begins to murmur the incantations to her spell, and as she steps back and extends her hands towards the prison wing of the barracks she shouts,

    "FIREBALL!"
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:17 No.17627389
She is an accomplished wizard, and the damage dice she was capable of putting out was more than enough to destroy a man sized hole in the wall.

The explosion is loud, dust flies everywhere, the flash of fire was bright, and out from the hole climbs a coughing scribe.

Immediately alarm bells are clanging. Scryver and Ko-Oh-Ri are late, they'll be arriving into an ambush of very powerful knights. Destamona and Daies glance at each other, wondering what to do, whether or not to leave them behind. Dan draws steel, and Minion snarls something brief, incomprehensible, and hungry.

The rank and file troopers rush to the scene from the nearby watchtowers, all of the patrols within earshot come running, and the barracks is mobilizing as if it were under attack. Within moments the streets are swarming with guard.

    "Stop right there criminal scum!"

Before Daies and Destamona is a T intersection where they could go left or right, blocked by guards. Behind them is a T intersection where they could go left or right, also servants of the Divine are pouring in. They're casting blesses, magic weapons, shields of faith, the warrior's steel their gaze as the support casters beef them up to comparable strength. None of them could compete with the group one on one, but they were legion.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:25 No.17627466
"Arrest them!" A captain cries, looking rather fine in his gilded armor. It was encrusted with gems, and obviously magic. His men were well equipped, and that helped tip the odds in their favor as they closed in on the group from all sides.

Daies drew one of his new toys, a short sword that had been enchanted to inflict instant death upon any mortal he stabbed. And with a triumphant yell, dove at the knights charging him with confidence and gusto. One after another, his blade plunges into them, slipping through their armor like a hot knife through butter.

Destamona raises both of her thin hands and casts chain lightening, and immediately a swath of guardsmen in front of her perish, convulsing as they fall to the ground.

Minion is pouncing, Dan is stabbing, they're fighting with everything they've got, but they just can't kill them fast enough. The press of shields and bodies begins to knock them back.

Any moment they'll have to unleash their divine powers, and pray they can get out in time.

It was about now that Scryver pushes aside a sewer grate from an adjoining alleyway and discovers the fighting going on, with a frown for his compatriot's lack of discretion, he draws one of his throwing knives and advances.

Ko-Oh-Ri also arrives by one of the citie's gates. Its dark, and the guard on watch is busty staring at the disaster towards the center of town. In the scorpionfolk's posession were all kinds of magical explosives, flasks of oil, and alchemists fire, most tied into bundles of ten. Since he doubts the guard would open the door for a monster, he stealthfully advances and begins to plant most of his stock onto the gate.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:31 No.17627517
Scryver, with all of his courage, gives a yell and bounds from the alley, facing the many guard which threatened to take Daies and Destamona down. Again and again he could hear the cries of chain lightening, and the violent impact of Daies and Dan's brawling.

    "Everyone! Back off!"

He shouts. Perhaps he could dissuade them, confuse them, something to give them a chance. His friends were in dire peril.

"This one's with them too! Arrest him!" Some decorated knight yells back.

Gritting his teeth, he heaves his throwing dagger back. It was venemous, and enchanted. He had been readied against his assailant, and the first person that turned to face him found Scryver hurling that dagger with all his might.

    >nat 1

Surprised at the danger, and the ferocity of this drow, the trooper glances back the way the knife had flown. It sails up over the roof of the guardhouse, long into the night, and out of sight.

It was at that very same moment that Ko-Oh-Ri lit the trail of oil leading to the rigged gate.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:33 No.17627538
A tremendous explosion rocked the city, shaking the ground as a plume of red fire arced into the sky, shattering the gate and destroying the towers.

Most of the guards paused, the fighting lulled, as they stared in shock and then looked back at Scryver.

The drow drew another throwing knife.

With a bloodthirsty cry he took this chance to dive towards the party, and slash at one of the nearest guards. At least they were together.

Panicking, and driven into a frenzy, the guards are ordered to slay the wizard. They were told not to arrest any longer, but to kill.

Ko-Oh-Ri begins to bound through the crowds, knocking men aside with his bulk. He charges into the rear rank of guards, and none could stand before the might of his bull rush. His sharp claws snapped at guards, separating them from their limbs and puncturing their armor as the blessed beast emerged into the fray.

"I am here!" his voice boomed.

Now Daies was long past wanting to leave, and now that everyone was here, he knew he could make a quick escape. He let his Cloak fall, and in a surge of divine power, focused it into a spell, conjuring Mordenkainen's Magnificent mansion.

He grabs Dan and Minion and immediately hauls them back into the shimmering portal.

Destamona yells "Come on!" as she grabs the scribe and leaps back into safety.

But it is too late for Ko-Oh-Ri and Scryver after all. As soon as Daies sees that they're not going to make it, he shuts the portal.

    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:52 No.17627738
The guards are stunned by the display of sorcery, one legendary spell after another has been thrown at them, and while they are the mightiest in the local lands, they had no idea they would be facing wizards and fledgelings gods of this caliber.

So Ko-Oh-Ri and the Scryver stagger into the empty ring that the party had left behind, shuffling nervously as all of the guards begin to ready. They turn, back to back, facing the seemingly endless tide of human soldiers.

"I don't think we're going to make it this time, Bug." Scryver says.

"Do not worry, for all my life I have served the will of my God. And he is not idle like the Pantheon of these Humans. Where are they to save their servants? Mine is here. We have nothing to worry." The scorpionfolk replies.

The guards look nervous, their captain barks at them to attack and they take a few steps foward, spears leveled. They ask the monster and the drow to drop their weapons to be slain.

"Any time now..." Scryver murmurs, his hands tightening upon his now drawn greatsword.

"I give you a sacrifice! This body is yours, O He who commands the fires of Hell!"

He chops off one of his smaller arms with one of his pincer claws and lifts it up into the air, his blood still spurting. Calling upon the portfolios of his god so that he might be noticed, and saved.

    >nat 20 on a wisdom check to pray

The arm discentegrates within Ko-Oh-Ri's grasp, blazing hotly as red embers burst from within its fleshy core, the smoldering ashes swirling into a tightly packed ball that flares to life and burns like the heart of the sun. He was now holding twenty dice of a god's personal fireball.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)01:58 No.17627792
Destamona gasps, as she and Daies view with remote sensing. It took only a fraction of their immeasurable power to bless Ko-Oh-Ri now that they'd dropped their Cloaks. Instantly their Will comes to life, and they feed the magic which he is holding.

Maximizing it, empowering it, enlarging it.

    "COME AT ME BRO!"

With a psychopathic gleam in his eyes he turns his palm down, and with that fireball clenched in his fist, he punches the street, cracking the stone, igniting the spell.
    >> Dowjin !!9I4SJG4jQPb 01/22/12(Sun)02:04 No.17627835
There was a blinding flash, as Scryver dives past the guards who were raising their hands to cover their faces. A wave of heat so blisteringly hot that the flesh of the legionnaires melted from the mere flash.

Staggering to put every last inch between him and that explosion, Scryver begins to sprint down the street, shoving guards out of his way. They only screamed.

A quake ripples through the ground, and the shockwave throws the crowd of guards off their feet. As he's running Scryver sees a red hot helmet spewing ashes from its empty bowl skipping along the street.

    >Im sorry man. I thought he'd throw it in one direction so you guys could flee that way. No one is going to survive that blast.

    >It has a reflex save right?

    >Yeah for half damage, which is still more than enough to kill you.

    >You know I'm ex Rogue?

A few of us, myself included, had been standing at the table as the climax of the encounter unfolded, our words like poetry and our legendary triumph audible down the halls.

And so Daies found the means to bring his old friend back to life. And in so doing, found a silent audience of over 7 tables in the RPGA. All eager to hear what kind of man could have been a part of a mission like that.

Epic tales abounded for a few years more. Daies faced one big bad enemy after the next, the group grew, and we rallied together for the last gems of the campaign.

It had been a long time coming, but there were only a few things left to do before we retired and called it the end.

Next, Part 3 of 3. Staying Classy.

To explain this final story, there was an event which preceded it which forever left a stain on a few relationships.

We were on a roll. The Pantheon of 12 had been annihilated thanks to arranging a few encounters between them, us singling them out, and the arrival of a very pissed 13th pantheon member they'd imprisoned long before.

We just got done tying up all the loose ends and kicking his butt too. When Daies came in and asked Dowjin when we get to throw a party and celebrate.

Daies knew the troops needed it, hell he needed it. Time for wine, women, and song, and grabbing a 'bite' to eat.

Now there was a Silver Dragon by the name of Drake. And Dowjin was so thrilled to have one of his own kind in their army that he promoted Drake, and gave him special priviledges. Drake performed well over the course of the campaign, and eventually became Dow's right hand man.

This really rubbed Daies wrong. The only creature other than his sister whom he had loyalty towards was Dowjin, and lately he'd been so enamored with Drake that Daies felt as if his place had been ursurped. Dowjin assured him this was not the case, and life went on.

Drake on the other hand, was scheming madly. His charisma and charm were skyrocketing, and he'd already convinced those under his command to swear fealty to him alone instead of Dowjin. During the war effort, he was funneling much needed resources and magic items into his own coffers and stores instead of passing on what Daies and Dowjin needed.

He was also very good at getting away with it. Nobody could sense his motive, nobody except those loyal to him ever even saw what happened.

Now I'd warned him, that theres some very powerful dudes in the group, and they might not take so kindly to the foul play. I wasn't going to stop him, but he must be ready to accept consequences, if he intends to enjoy the spoils. Cocksure he snuffed the idea and said nobody could do anything about it.

Daies was getting bored of his Nullmatter sword that day. It was a revolutionary weapon, like all the tools of war he employed. Still it bored him. The materials to made it had been mined from the mountains of Sigil, the ores that nullified divine and supernatural powers concentrated into an alloy which was completely mundane. It was a regular run of the mill masterwork longsword. Only the stuff it had been made with emits a field that supresses all divine power, spells, and supernatural abilities. Only the most extraordinary of special abilities ever functioned within its reach.

He wanted to know why there was a shortage of magical supplies, and with his jealousy of Drake fresh in mind, went to remote sense what he'd been up to.

The results shocked him. The banquet was only tomorrow, and one of their honored generals was stealing the Alliance goods?

He went to tell the news to Dowjin. And he told the half-dragon that no, he wasn't mad. People make mistakes all the time. In fact, he had a better idea. A more fitting punishment.

    Lets bake him a cake.

So the party goes on. Everyone's having a ball. The food is decadent, the comforts lavish, the wine splendid, the company jovial.

Everyone feasts and compliments each other.

    >the fools thought it was over

It comes to dessert time, and everyone is served their favorite dishes. Sweet spread wasn't hard to manage when you're a god.

Drake was given a slice of chocolate cake, big enough to please his Draconic form. Dowjin urged everyone to eat and drink and be merry. No one argued that.

Finally when everyone was setting down their forks, Dowjin cleared his throat and rose. Thanking everyone for coming, and that he only had one brief announcement to make.

He glanced towards Drake, with a smile upon his violet lips.

    "Did you like the cake?"

The hilt of the nullmatter sword was tossed before Drake, clanging next to his cutlery. It was missing its blade.

This is what lead Daies to wonder, how Dowjin could do that to someone so close in his personal cabinet.

Sure Daies had given him the idea. But weeks afterwards he began to think back, and he almost regretted it.

One thought after another began to follow that self destructive lloathing. Why was it that Dowjin didn't take the field of war with him? Why was Daies so often sent into suicide missions?

Why wasn't Daies recognized like the living members of the Alliance? He had a throne of bones within a realm of death and decay, all of Daies' servants were the rejected, the dead, and the damned. Why didn't he have any of the nice things?

Was he just being used? For so, so many years?

He kept silent, and he brooded...

Number the last... Never jump the shark, always imply something more can come later.

The psychosis was maddening. Daies began to analyze everything Dowjin did day to day. Every fake smile. Every diplomatic word that Dowjin didn't mean.

Every empty promise. Every lie. And he began to realize, so much of what he spoke, were pure and simple lies.

What Dowjin wanted was to smooth over relations with everybody, he wanted everybody to think that everything was okay and everyone was fine if they just stepped in line and followed his benevolent rule...

Nobody questioned how it was too good to be true. What was his true motives? All these years Daies had been so obsessed with getting what he wanted and sharing the spoils with his brother in arms, that he never stopped to wonder why Dowjin went through with it. He'd always just taken for granted that Dowjin was a comrade, the only one he could trust.

The war with Chaos began shortly afterwards, it was the aftereffects of having no dieties around anymore. Everyone was aspiring to power to fill those voids, and this particular malevolent demon came from none other than Dowjin's past.

Peculiar, Daies thought. And he investigated.

What he discovered would ultimately doom everyone he knew.

A large portion of the Alliance prayers, magical artifacts, and resources, had been siphoned off into a realm that could only be accessed through Dowjin's Palace.

Once Daies infiltrated it, he met with an aged guardian, a devil of incalculable age and power. The devil said that he guarded this passage beyond into the plane of Ascension. A place of harmony, a jewel where those who have done their duty may rest and delight for all eternity.

Dowjin was making his own personal heaven, and Daies wasn't invited. Further, the devil seemed to glee at his first visitor in a long time, and told Daies all about how Chaos originally spawned from within his dear friend, and how he was going to leave them to die. There was no escaping Chaos, this was Dowjin's plan. To hide away while his comrades died.

Daies took action instantly. He would make sure that Dowjin wouldn't escape and abandon them. If he wasn't going to Ascension, than no one was.

Daies teleported into Dowjin's palace, singling out Dowjin's wife, Tel`ryn.

Daies knew that he needed twelve seconds. Just twelve uninterrupted seconds, to end it all. Tel`ryn smiled, as the succubus greeted Daies warmly.

"Goodness! What a surprise. Whats the hurry?"

She asked in all innocence, and before any of her four bodyguards could step in the way, Daies slid foward, drew his longsword, and impaled her upon it, leaning in and relishing the feel of how the blade would grind against the back of her spine. Pure malevolence poured through Daies, and the wound he inflicted was Vile. He took great care, however, he knew exactly how much she could take before death, it was part of his portfolio, and so he withdrew his blade and teleported to the main guard tower for Nebaron.

Dowjin's eyes go wide, instantly he knows, the breath of a scream barely leaves his lips before he teleports to Tel`ryn's side. Her bodyguards have barely begun raising their hands to point the way Daies went.

Healing her wouldn't work, and the foul magic Daies had used required disinfecting first. But by the time that power was done, she'd still be dead. Think of something, think of anything. Dowjin falls to his knees as he grabs her up into his arms, her blood on his hands as he cradles Tel`ryn. His breathing out of control. Do something.

He cleanses the vile nature of her wounds with a burst of his divine power. Now all he had to do is...

    >-10

His cry echoed throughout the realms.

    "DAIES!"

    "Goodbye. My friend."

Daies mutters, pulling a level within the control room which would unlink one of the many magical parts which fueled thousands of intricate wards protecting their plane of existence from the arrival of Chaos.

An infernal gateway began to draw itself into existance in the sky, space folding in upon itself as reality itself was torn and that flaming portal screamed to life, spewing flocks of beasts from the nethers of the many Hells, and at the forefront a diabolical warship, nose pointed straight down, crewed by the comrades they had lost to Chaos' corruption.

There were many epic fights that night, a very dire loss, and a WORST ENDING, GAME OVER.

But Daies had a plan, and we went into overtime, and a lot more fun stuff happened. But that is a story for another night.

Stay classy /TG/, now you know how to make your fun stories last for years.

Like I said, part of the genius of Daies was he never told you that much, just enough to make you ask for more.

The 7 Kings were his old adventuring buddies from his last group, they made it big, and screwed him over.

In my game, Daies eventually found out where they had been entombed, stole their riches, and all their kingdoms. Or rather, the kingdoms of their great great great great great great great..... children. Before they were eaten by the entity known as Chaos. (not related to 40k)

    I'm confused

did Drake eat the sword in his cake?

    and Daies retrieved it later?

Thank you! Genuinely! Theres so much I've always wanted to share, and I promised Daies that even if our game had to end eventually, his legend would live on.

There is of course more, but I have to work in seven hours XD

Your very welcome! You have no idea how many times I've started to write it down, and then abandoned the project. So many unsung heroes.

    >>17628377

Yes, Drake was fed ground up nullmatter blade. He is permanently (EX) only forever. no buffs no nothing.

And no Daies couldn't get it back, most of it was metabolised or fused into him and stuff. Sciencey stuff I made up as I went along.

    Indeed.

It was actually the Folding Sword he used to kill Tel`ryn.

He slew a hecacontares once and magicked all the swords into one sword, which can unfold into a disk with a hook and handle for shield use. Also omgitspins.jpg
