    84 KB STRIKE WITCHES: TOGA-CLAUS RIDES AGAIN planefag !!0ZviLFh59My 02/01/12(Wed)23:18 No.17769684
After an entire base full of terrifyingly-powerful girls almost murder and/or sexually molest you, you decide to smooth things over and send a strong message of non-fraternization by dressing in a bedsheet and handing out gifts.

Fuck it, they don't pay you to think. Toga-Claus was a rather dunderheaded tradition that started back in the 'States, when there was little to break up the training routine and every mail-call was cause for celebration. You put it to good use now. From a shrub outside you clip enough bough-y looking things to make a passable wreath for your head, and you scamper around the castle for the next two hours tracking down individual Witches and giving them their goods. Certain Witches, like Lynette or Myafuji, are pretty simple and their delighted reactions make you feel pretty good about all the damn trouble you went through. Charlotte, for one, looks pretty guilty when you deliver her new socket set and smokes (Lucky Strike, not those fucking Chesterfields,) but Elia, the unrepentant little swine, blushes and looks at the floor just long enough to fool you, then she jumps out and yanks your toga-sheet off. She frowns terribly, balls it up and shoves it in your arms when she see's your fully-dressed underneath.

With your pistol belt, of course.

When you get back to the lobby, sans the fucking sheet, you find Sean and Sakamoto regarding each other stony-faced, cards in hand. Ian is tinkering with the piano and occasionally blowing through the pitch-pipe he tracked down in Eastchurch.

Things finally seem settled down, and everything is delivered.

You look at the two bottles of Schnapps. You could hold off, and speak to Trude socially, tonight in the lobby. Or you could pigeonhole her in private. Dare you...?

I'm not sure MC would come up with it IC, but...

One of our long-term plans is getting the girls to wear trousers, right? I was thinking we could get them special ones with quick-release trouser legs. Like those that turn into shorts when you unzip the calf sleeves, only these reach up as high as necessary for their striker units.

So our Witches can now walk around properly dressed, give zero fucks, and be only a couple of unfastened zippers from being ready for action when necessary.

Our goal has been to show up the Witches and turn this bunch of girls into a proper squadron of fighter pilots; are we going to put them all on the shit list when they actually start acting like we wanted them to, because they're pushing us around because we have the least confirmed kills out of all of them?

I call bullshit. You can fly planes in a lot of places that don't have a good chance of seeing you vaporized by aleum heatbeams. We didn't jump into that furball in the first thread, nearly getting ourselves and our crew killed because "we love flying."

Face it man, the MC is not a complete jerkass. He's a pilot, so he arrogent, egotistical, short-tempered and aggressive but deep down he's got... well not a hard of gold but there is a heart in there.

Killing aliums adds to the flying experience, but isn't necessary for it. Again, I'm trying to separate the appreciation we have for flying from other things we might care about. We can care about this stuff without it being linked to our flying. We can fly in order to accomplish things that we want to without those being the reason we *like* flying.

Even the most hardened badass is still a human. Everyone loses someone at some point, and to insist that anyone, ourselves or otherwise, should be somehow above normal human emotions is wrong.

Sometimes people need support and comfort to get through the worst of times, before they come back that much stronger. It's my opinion that with Trude, after she lost a family member, that may well be the way to approach it.

I mean, yes, it's war so pilots are very valuable, especially experienced and combat-proven pilots.
But this is a world with Witches, that are even more valuable, and Witch-to-pilot have a much, much higher kill ratio. Are we really as irreplaceable as we act like we are?

Well, from a non-moral standpoint, we're stuck with the Witches for the forseeable future, so there's a very high chance that we'll end up with Trude as our wingman. Do you really want an emotionally unstable pilot who irrationally blames you for the death of her sister flying your wing, or ANYWHERE NEAR you for that matter?

It's best to get this shit resolved now, when she DOESN'T have a huge cannon pointed at our tail.

The dormitory hallway is peaceful and serene at this hour; the glow of the dying day suffusing the gently-curving passageway with warm ambiance. You look out the towering windows on the English Channel, thinking about the dark threat that now hunches on the occupied shores of Normandy, still thick with the blood of devoured innocents.

When you slow down long enough to think about it, this war isn't any fucking fun at all.

You knock on the door to Trude's room, firmly, three times.

    Silence.

You knock on the door a few more times, much harder.

    Dead air.

"No answer. Bitch must be de-"

"Deaf?" Trude says, yanking open the door. "Better then being dumb as a *rock.*"

You do not have many fucks to give, at the best of times, and today you've already given a few. You shove the bottles of schnapps into Trude's arms roughly. "Here's your fucking kraut liquor," you say hotly. "I got my superior officer's ass kicked in a barfight and stole it right out of the O-Club for you so don't drink yourself into a stupor all at once, okay?"

You spin on your heel and storm away before your anger can fail you.

    "Wait," Trude says weakly.

    You storm on.

    "WAIT!"

"What!" you say to the air before you, crossing your arms to demonstrate how you're totally not waiting just for her. This random spot in the hall just caught your fancy, for all she knows.

"Did you hear?" she asks. You nod.

    "I - I'm so - so -"

    You bite your lip. Hard.

    "A-and you were there and I - I..."

You hear the bottles clink together as she shifts her arms a little.

    "Thanks for getting these."

    You grunt. "Wasn't nuthin."

    "Sounds like it was."

"No. What's something is... I ground-looped once in training. Forced landing on a road. Flipped a T-6 over, it tumbled down an embankment - the ditch - smashed the canopy in when the plane landed on it. Took them six hours to cut me out with metal snips."

Trude says nothing. You finally turn to look at her, any facade of bravado long gone. The stress and strain and heartsick worry is plain, and you don't give a damn anymore.

"Sitting there soaked with diesel fuel, cold as hell, waiting for the spark that'll burn you alive? Fuck that." You shake your head. "I hate waiting. And now I'm going to get drunk." You turn from Trude and walk away, and she doesn't call you back, or follow.

Of course. She needs some time alone. You chide yourself - you were half-beveling she'd slugged you out of jealousy. * Jealousy.* A girl like that falling for some random asshole out-of-the-blue then going full-retard over some tart like Perrine? You sigh.

You're only twenty years old. This shit is way out of your depth.

There's a party brewing in the lounge, but you're not sure you want to be there. You can drink just as well alone. On the other hand, misery loves company. On the other hand, your crew might make you discuss... Gnome Shit. On the other hand you could ask Sakamoto what the fuck is going on around here. On the other hand you have THREE HANDS, that doesn't work.

No, it's called being one-dimensional. I don't know about you, but I actually prefer that the characters I read/play as/etc not react to every situation in the exact same way. Trollfacing everything may sound like fun to you but uh, the rest of us aren't from /b/ so...

Look, Trude's pissed at us for what happened. Our best bet is to explain to her, in our fashion, that while we feel sorry about what happened, and if there was more we could have done we would have. But we did what we could in the situation given, and that bad as this is, it may only be the beginning, and she needs to toughen the fuck up, sound good?

I want some character too. I enjoy some dogfighting, acting like an amazing asshole, being a bro, and maybe getting a little romance and sexy times too. But I can't seem to get half that shit with these fucking trolls and goddamn white knight "no-waifu" faggots around here. Seriously? With all the fapfiction you assclowns drum up, a little bit of well-written romance to go with amazing action and hijinks planefag puts out is getting your dander up this badly? You sound like an asshole and you probably are, but you have a point. It's easy to be the uncaring asshole right until your friend decides it's a great idea to ventilate his brain. Then when you're standing there together with your friends and none of you can really appreciate what the fuck is happening and people are crying their faces off, it's a little difficult to remain composed and unemotional. Especially when you're nineteen or twenty years old.

You decide that being afraid of Gnome Shit would be just as bad as anything else, so you head back to the lounge. Ian seems to have the piano mostly in-tune now, and Sakamoto is gloating over a large pile of chips.

You collapse on one of the couches and snag a beer out of an ice-bucket full of them. "So, what'd you guys do today?"

"Relaxed," Sean says, glaring at Sakamoto. "Wait. What does that funky eye of yours do?"

She lifts the eyepatch and winks at him. "Sees through objects."

"Son of a BITCH!" Sean says, and Sakamoto laughs her ass off, scattering the chips as she flails about in mirth. After that carries on for a while and you finish your first beer, Sean turns to you. "So what've you been up to?"

"He almost got raped by three girls in the bath, told Patton to fuck off and got locked in a broom closet with Minna," Ian replies immediately.

You turn to Ian. "I hate you. So much."

He grins at you. "Oh he's in the armor," he says, mimicking your voice.

    "So much. It's unreal."

The damage, however, is done. Sakamoto is leaning in, looking incredibly interested. "So, who tried to rape you?"

    "Bu-"

    "Did they get very far?"

    "The fuck they di-"

"Did you put up a fight!?"

"Well, uh, Ian is being stalked by Perrine," you retort.

"It's not my fault she's certifiable," Ian retorts from deep inside the piano. "Maybe if she got boinked once in a while she'd have someplace to offload the crazy, you know?"

Sean rubs his head. "You're both idiots. Don't know you know shit about women?"

Ian's head pops out of the piano, looking angry, and you exchange glances, then glare at Sean together. "We're pilots!" you object in unison.

Sakamoto and Sean look at each other. "Nnnope," they say.

    "The hell you say!"

Sakamoto laughs. "These aren't little girls, you know. They're warriors with plenty of battles under their belts. But they're still young, and cooped up on this base, and forbidden from men, and - splash!" she says, pointing at you. "Your outrage is hilarious. You should've seen it coming from a mile away."

"Wait," you say, patting the air. "Reign it in a sec. Men are forbidden?"

"Didn't you know?" Sakamoto says, slugging back a beer. "Witches are forbidden from any non-necessary contact with male personnel or civilians."

"Who the fuck gave THAT order?" you ask, and immediately want to punch yourself in the mouth, 100% sure that Sakamoto will reply with "Me."

Her answer is almost as bad. "Commander Minna."

This is what NTR is all about guys, don't worry it's chill, we just line up multiple waifus at once and then shoot them down for another waifu, then shoot her down when you fancy a change.

Another thought is see if this base has some hot support staff nurses or some shit. Or you know, real women that aren't crazy bitches.

Though Charlotte and Sakamoto are probably fine, but lets be realistic for a moment. The moment you fuck any of these bitches, you buy into some annoying shit after the fact, this isn't fucking some village girl or some typist on staff, you can avoid those if things go bad. These people will be covering us IN COMBAT, how about we like, not fuck them and stir up the hornets nest.

Keep our eyes on the prize, make them good wingmen, make them friends if you must, but if we start being the playboy that's going to end in all kinds of drama. Stick to locals, stick to non-combat staff, whatever, but an ass pat or maybe a fun romp at most, nothing long term. Nothing that can be misunderstood.

Finicky little fucking bastards requiring mad tight tolerances. The Russian ShVAK was a perfectly powerful, high-velocity, flat-tajectory cannon and it wasn't a fraction as problematic as the Hispano - lend-lease aircraft that came with Hispanos were soon retrofitted.

The reason the US didn't field more 20mm guns in their aircraft? We never could get a domestic production line going that made them worth a damn. Too much hand-fitting and such required. And we managed to mass-produce the Merlin, which tells you something.

Yeah, that's sort of annoying. Right now though we have bigger problems and honestly, if some of those girls wanted to break that rule I doubt anyone would really do more then slap them on the wrist. Unlike us, Witches are assets they can't afford to boot out on some COs dumb restriction.

Anyway, seems like PF's still writing, since there was no "WAT DO". But then again, this is starting to sound like a challenge. It'd be chill to get Sakabroto, Minna, Shirley, and Trude together for booze and reminiscing.

If he is, he's being smart about not saying anything. I doubt it though, Sakamoto might well be up for it, but I figure she respects Minna enough to follow orders and she's experienced enough that if she breaks no fucking men order, she doesn't do it with military staff.

Sakamoto isn't stupid. She understands the kind of troubles that might occur.

You snort in utter disbelief. "She's not that good at following her own orders, let me tell you what," you say. "Dragging me into a broom closet for a little 'privacy' and then- then-"

    "Then *what,*" Sakamoto says dangerously.

"I... kicked down the door and knocked over half the Witches listening in."

Sakamoto stares at you. "You are a most peculiar man, young pilot."

"I've been told that at times," you admit, taking another drink. A beautiful chord of music peals from the piano, and Ian grins delightedly. "Ah, got her working," he says, and plops down on the bench to polish the ivories with gusto.

    "He plays?" Sakamoto asks.

"No, no," you say seriously. "That's his father's ghost, possessing his body." You duck a poker chip for your trouble. "So... why the hell did Minna give an order like that?"

Sakamoto's eye goes from full-open to half-lidded, all canny-like, and she purses her lips. "I think she should tell you herself."

"Soley for your own amusement, I think." Sakamoto's eye twinkles with wicked glee, and you feel you're not far off the mark with that one.

"Come on, ya lumps," Ian says. "Get your asses over here. Let's jam."

No, I understand that, but it's not worth the effort right now. We are actively avoiding relationships of that nature with them anyway. So what if it's unfair, they could probably be as don't give a fuck about it as we are and get away with it if it became a real issue, but it's not our problem. Just something odd we've been told and will remember should it be useful.

You let Ian badger you and Sean into forming up near the piano. You look at him impatiently.

    "Pop the hood, please."

You groan, and lift the lid of the grand piano. "JESUS CHRIST!" you scream, leaping away from it. "The- the- there's..." you turn to Sean, your face a mask of shock and horror. "Sanya..."

"A body would weigh down the cables and no noise'd be coming out, fuckhead," Sean says, smacking you upside the head. "I'm Irish, numbnuts, it takes more'n that to put me under, and even more to make me dumber then YOU. Now shut up, you're singing and that's that."

"Yes, *Dad,*" you grump, but you admit defeat.

"Now..." Ian says, pondering. "Let's give it... an old classic, shall we?"

He applies himself to the keys, and you have to admit, he picked a good tune.

You, Ian and Sean pick up the tune, singing with gusto. You've always loved this song, and you have no trouble singing with feeling. The huge lobby with the vaulted ceilings and the railings and huge staircase make a fantastic echo chamber, and your strong voices blend well, echoing around the huge chamber impressively.

You and Sean lock arms around each others shoulders, reaching your free limbs out dramatically like opera singers, belting the lyrics at the ceiling dramatically, enjoying singing in a place you could actually hear yourselves for a change. A piano that's in tune is nice, too, and you're all relatively sober. As far as you're concerned, it's a fucking operatic performance.

You're all fully into it by the time you hit your favorite part.

"Minds of men, fashioned a crate-of-thun-der~ Sent it high, into the blue!" you sing. "Hands of men, blasted the world-a-sun-der, how they lived, god only knew!" You're feeling fine now, and your misery from earlier is almost forgotten. "Souls of men, dreaming of skies-to-con-quer, gave us wings, ever to soar!"

Yeah, it's going to be okay. As you sing on, you see Minna standing on the grand staircase, about halfway down, staring at you. There's surprise in her eyes... and something else... but Sean nudges you to keep you on track and you finish the song properly.

Minna finishes her transit and approaches your trio. She speaks to you first.

    "You can SING?"

"I'm not just another pretty face, you know?"

"He learned as a church choirboy so it probably didn't huuuuuurt," Sean leers. He forgot you still had your arms around each others shoulders, so you unceremoniously duck your head under his and get him in an arm-lock.

"The filthy Irish-Catholic apologies," Ian snickers, "or it gets the noogie again!"

Minna is still staring. Her gaze travels between Ian and Sean, but eventually ends up back on you.

    "But- but you're GOOD!"

"Not really," you say. "I've just sang that one a million times."

    "Formal events?"

"Lord no, I don't need any more work then what they already give me. Just screwing around in the O-Club. It's one of my favorites."

    "Why?"

You open your mouth to answer her when Ian prods you. "C'mon, another one. Battle Hymn?"

    "Men of Harloch!" Sean protests.

"What's a good Irishman like you doing supporting filthy Welshman?" Ian teases.

"You do strange things for the women you love," Sean says mysteriously, making Ian's ears perk. "Especially for your mom."

"Never sleep," Ian replies good-naturedly. He looks at you. "Tie-breaker?"

You're about to make up your mind when Eila comes belting down the stairway, yelling incoherently. Minna looks perturbed, and intercepts her halfway down the staircase.

"Dames," Sakamoto says, slouching in exactly the way Sean tends to. "Always something else with 'em, huh?" She cuts her eyes at you. "Did you see Minna's face?"

"Yeah, I did," you say, thoughfully. When she first looked at you, there was... something sad. Something buried.

    It was almost vul-

"-Now if we could just get you housebroken she'd have a keepr," Sakamoto continues, and Ian snickers into his keyboard.

"She could sure use a cunning linguist on the staff," Sean says.

"Licking cold flagpoles," Ian says almost inaudibly, and Sakamoto smiles at him.

"She's not so bad, at all," the tall Japanese pilot says sadly. "It's just hard for anyone to smile these days. Especially this week."

Minna comes back down the staircase, looking perturbed. "Eila says Sanya is speaking in tongues, in her sleep. Strange, alien tongues."

"No shit, she's Russian," you say. "They all sound like that. Like when you get popcorn stuck in the back of your throat in the theater, except it's a vodka cork."

Ian just taps you on the shoulder and points at the head of the staircase, where Sanya is currently lying.

    Midair.

As you watch, she floats out over the center of the room, lying flat, on her back, babbling some convoluted silibance with just enough form and structure to give it the feel of language. Hideous, twisted language.

    Ian looks at you.

"Do they do that in Russia, genius?"

So now that things are calming down, some conjecture.

If some random German clockmaker knows about "Gnomes" or wizards or whatever we're calling them, do the military brass know? I mean, it seems odd that we get three possible wizards in the same plane, flying out of a base that close to Sparkle City.

Maybe the brass doesn't know, but there's something or someone above even Patton's paygrade who's pulling strings, manipulating events to push the human race to victory.

He was told by another wizard/warlock/gnome. Presumably, they keep it secret. Also presumably, there's a lot more than anyone realizes because male magic expresses itself as an extreme aptitude for their chosen field.

We really aren't going to be throwing fireballs around. We're just going to get an extra 20 mph out of our engines.

Maybe this world's equivalent of the Manhattan Project?
Seeing as the only way to confirm whether someone is a wizard or not is to throw them into a situation and see if they exhibit superhuman luck, maybe the project planners decided that throwing pilots into the fight and seeing if they survive was the most efficient testing method.

Would be fun is Sparkle City became the depositing bin for "gifted" pilots.

Also, Minna flipped her shit with just a couple of good ol' American aircrew with standard good ol' American hijinks. Imagine what would happen if she got some real shit-disturbers like the Black Sheep on that Island.

The shit VF214 pulled would probably put her into a Stress BSOD. I can see it now... MC walks into her office with her huddled on the floor behind her desk, rocking back and forth. "Can't leave room... Black Sheep... Bananas... Where did they get bananas?"

I get the feeling that wizards have always existed. The reason there are so few of them is not because men lack talent. Its that few men are put into situations that push their boundaries. And fewer still recognize their magic for what it is. Those that do know tend to keep things a secret, lest they provoke a witch hunt.

It takes a wizard to recognize a wizard. And political genius is another form of magic right? There must be at least one running things behind the scenes.
