    You wake up.

You last remember being stabbed by a Martian Spider-Robot while about ten-thousand guns went off all around you and your friend had a sword-fight with a couch, so waking up in a bed confuses the hell out of you.

    Oh. There's voices, too.

"-damage is quite severe," a man is saying.

"We've the best hospital facilities around, and aircraft to fly him anywhere they've better," you hear Minna saying. "Can't we-"

"Moving him now would just kill him. Frankly, I don't think he'll ever regain consciousness."

There's silence, and you feel the air in the room drop by a few degrees.

"... I'm sorry, Commander. Miyafuji did more then we could've hoped, but... oxygen deprivation, it's... the machinery works, but the brain-"

"You're dismissed, Doctor," Minna says sharply, and you hear the man's shoes drag across the floor reluctantly until a door closes.

    >lol braindead
    >but wait!

That "braindead" line the Doc just dropped gives you about thirty beautiful one-liners, and you're trying to pick your favorite when you hear Minna walk over to your bed. There's a scraping sound, which you take to be a chair, then creaks as the German Witch settles into it.

You crack one eye ever-so-slightly and slew your eyeball around like a tracking ball-turret, hoping you'll evade notice.

Minna is sitting stock still, bolt-upright in a rickety wooden folding chair. She's wearing a white button-down shirt, which hangs open just enough to reveal that her ribs have been bandaged up. There's nasty rope-like bruises streaking across her forehead and arms, but what draws your attention is her face.

Her eyes are cold and empty, set in a stony face. In her lap she holds a small box, and you see the thousand-yard-stare penetrating right through the box, her lap, the floor and the floor below.

As you watch, a tear falls, and lands on two words scrawled in your pathetic chicken-scratch: "For Minna."

    >So yeah.

Normally, this scene should fill you with powerful and conflicting emotions, the kind most twenty-year old men, including yourself, are complete shit at dealing with.

So you do what you always do - punch them in the face and stuff them in the disposal.

"SMALL TIME," you bellow, summinging the growlyrage from deep in your chest.

You couldn'tve asked for a better reaction. Minna squeals, and her sultry voice makes for a surprisingly good squeal. She about jumps off the chair, clutching the small box in front of her like a shield, or something she's about to throw.

You turn your head and fix her with weak, watery eyes. Slowly, you extend your left hand and jab a finger at her.

    "You. Are. Smalltime."

    Her mouth drops open.

"I'm not even properly officially dead and you're already going through my shit! That was gonna be a surprise! Well, SURPRISE, SUNSHINE!" you exclaim, throwing your arms in the air as best you can. "I'm getting a little fucking tired of them, myself, but what the hell!"

Minna sputters, tears still flowing down her cheeks, and she raises the box to cover her gaping mouth out of reflex.

"The fuck, you gonna EAT it? C'mon smalltime, open it already!"

Minna's feet scrabble on the floorboards as she shoves her chair back a few inches. "The doctor. Don't move, you need the d-doctor-" Minna starts to rise, but you risk shifting just far enough to snag her wrist before she can.

"Minna," you say seriously, "right now I need you to open the goddamn box. Seriously."

Minna's eyes are wild, confused, shining with tears - but they're focused on you, which is good. That's what you want, not the thousand-yard-stare. Focused on you.

Minna shakily flops into the folding chair again, and you recline into the pillows once more. "Seriously, I can't get you alone for ten seconds when I actually *want* to, so, open it."

She opens it. Marveling at the contents, she withdraws the pilots chronometer, what plebes call a "watch," and cradles it gently.

"A German maker," she mutters, turning it over to find the date. "Pre-war."

"One of the best," you say, satisfied.

"And expensive as hell," she says, her voice becoming dangerously guttural. "What's the meaning of this?" Her eyes flash at you, still wet, but full of fury.

Sure. Why not. Minna's going to be confused about the suspect level of badass we've displayed. She may even point out the inconsistencies in our ammo counts.

You look deep into Minna's pretty, shimmering eyes, and you can feel something complex and multifaceted and convoluted going on beneath them. You remember Sakamoto's words earlier, just before all hell broke loose, about Minna's ban on fraternizing with males and the cryptic comments about her reasons.

You're not stupid, and you've got a decent memory. You recognize all this. But you've also just been stabbed by a fucking alien murderbot and everything hurts and so the number of fucks you give is best expressed as a negatative number in scientific notation.

"It's a present, you dipshit," you deadpan. "Durrr. I thought *I* was the one with brain damage?"

"It's expensive," Minna says. "It sends the wrong message. It's wholly inappropriate behavior and-"

"-and those are the exact arguments you told Patton to stuff up his ass not three or four fucking hours ago, so shut your pie-hole!" you snap, with all the energy remaining to you. You gasp, and take a second to catch your breath. "I've got combat pay backing up like mad and in case you didn't notice I tend to do whatever the fuck I want. If I wanted to get in your pants I wouldn't have kicked down a fucking DOOR to get AWAY from you earlier today!" You thump your fist into the bedsheets. "Plenty of people are trying to get in pants, but I'm the son-of-a-bitch WEARING them!"

Once, as a child, you saw a zepplin being partially deflated for maintenance. The gas-bag sagged, the volume sinking in, but the rigid skeletal framework remained. Minna does something similar now. "I'm sorry," she says weakly, carefully putting the watch back in the box. "I can't accept this."

She sets it on the nightstand, murmurs something about fetching the doctor, and leaves the room.

The doctor arrives, makes the requisite noises of shock and amazement and praise the lord and all that bullshit, and explains what happened. Apparently you took a sharp robot forelimb right through your kidney and liver, and would've bled out in seconds had you not made sure to wedge the fucking thing in the wound, sealing it. Minna kept it like that till Miyafuji was brought in, and she basically knitted your body together through sheer, brute-force expenditure of magic.

"She's not very well trained, as far as medical Witches go," the doctor tells you. "Amazing raw potential, however. Once she sleeps and gains her strength back, she'll want another go."

    "Ian?" you ask.

"Took a hard knock, but he'll be fine. He's got double vision at the moment, not that it held him back any."

"What?" you ask. "Held him back from what?"

"Didn't Wilcke tell you?" the doctor says, tucking his clipboard under his arm. "He blew two legs off that spider-thing as it came after you. Would've ripped you limb-from-limb before you made it to Wilcke, otherwise."

You rub your temples miserably, remembering Ian's terrifying, tense, cold excitement as he plugged Martian Firebees with short, dead-on bursts of .50 cal fire.

Gnomes, you think, and wish you had the strength to punch the doctor.

You inquire as to the rest of the base's fate, and the Doctor informs you the attack was as brief as it was sudden. It didn't take the MPs with the submachine guns twenty seconds to kick in the doors and begin firing. You vaguely remember somebody opening up with a Tommy gun on the spider, and almost hitting you, in fact. The single shots afterwards must've been Ian going to work.

"So it was quick," he summarizes. "A lot of Witches could've died in those few seconds, though. Probably what they were counting on."

You think about all the times you plopped down on that couch since the Martian attack. You shudder as you realize the mechanical spider was folded up in there, quiet, silent, waiting for its chance to strike. Right under your ass.

"Right," you mutter. "Can I get a wheelchair or something?"

"Fuck no," the doctor says sternly. "Miyafuji knitted you together, but only halfway. You've basically got a hole in you stuffed with gauze and bandaged up tight; we can't risk starting bleeding again till she finishes the job."

You nod. "Ah... Doc..." you look into the middle distance and bite your lip. This is the part that really worries you.

"Your liver is perfect," he says, rolling his eyes. "If it'd been in better shape, then Miyafuji might've had more magic for your *recent* injuries." The 'dumbass' goes unsaid.

In my case, it's more that I find the idea of our character and Minna being tsundere as fuck for each other without either of them actually quite realizing it and bouncing off each other as a result to be hilarious.

Especially since pretty much every other character is guaranteed to screw around with both parties. Sakabroto, Yeagertits and Erica in particular, but the others would also amuse themselves with it from time to time.

And because I don't think this would somehow prevent the Ace Combat bit from working. Think like Persona 3/4 or some shit; Social Links on the ground, Dungeon Crawling in the sky.

She has every right to refuse an overly expensive gift if she's not comfortable with it. Just because you want her to have it doesn't override her valid concerns. But to go beyond that and to follow her around, hide it where she'll find it and try to force her to do what we want is super fucking creepy. It's even a little creepier than the response to throw the thing at her head.

Honestly, I get that some of you don't respond well to rejection, especially when it's in your fantasy fun time but it's still creepy as all hell. Especially when it's meant to be coming from Pilot Fucks McNoGive.

You listen to the Doc give you some touchy-feely bullshit about how you'll be right as rain, and finally you hold up your hands. "Doc, so, it feels like a dragon is shitting fire into my abdomen. Make with the happy-juice, would ya?"

"Sure," he says, and produces a truly huge needle from his pocket.

    "That's FAR too bi-"

"Shut up and take your tricordazine like a good boy," he mutters, and jabs it into you.

    THAT IS SOME GOOD SHIT.

You go flying through the clouds like a lizard smoking telescopic scopes, shitting on cellular phones, yes, phones made out of beehives and the bees go BZZZZ YOU ARE TEN BEES! You buzz at the doctor and buzz at the ceiling and buzz buzz buzzzzz.

Sometime, a million years later, on another planet with way-too-bright sunlight, you're gently shaken awake.

You blink the sleep away from your eyes, and wince as consciousness brings renewed pain.

    "Miyafuji," you whisper. "Hey, kiddo."

She smiles at you. "I'm glad you're feeling better. I tried my hardest."

    "Did pretty good, too."

Miyafuji smiles, but sadly, her cute little face seeming to sag with disappointment.

    "Why so serious, kiddo?"

She looks at you solemnly. "Minna is having you ejected from the 501st."

eh, I was all for the watch as a pseudo-bribe. We don't do gifts half way and wanted to specifically send mixed messages so Sakamoto and the others can stop thinking they have us sussed out.

Hell, didn't even expect her to take it, and she's right, it WOULD send the wrong message to things she's ordered, even if her methods are selfish to her past she's sticking with the idea of no courting for the Witches. Accepting a expensive present would be a contradiction to that.

So now, we troll with it. Pocket it for now, if she acts up leave it in annoying places. She'll respect it too much to throw it away so she'll have to physically return it every time and it'll throw up more smoke screens for what we want to do which is teach her girls how to be egotistical god complex witches who bounce aliens all day erry day in aviators.

If can't be in heaven we have to create it.
