You are Sonia Reynard, Rookie Corvette Pilot for the House of Jarik-Dremine and you are yet again taking part in a boarding action. At this rate you figure half of the squadron will be confusing you for a Marine in a few months time.

While searching for enemy starships jamming communications in the area your stumbled upon the Langley class starship Endevour. Built by the Terran Alliance centuries ago it was supposed to have been pushed into subspace as part of a defense fleet to someday protect the Factions. Something went wrong however and the vessel has faded in and out of reality for centuries terrifying nearby shipping lanes as a ghost ship.

You and your Marines are currently in Engineering aboard the Endevour along with two of the revived crew; The Human female Dr Anushree Sanjukta and a strange looking Dro'all, Ohema Udashi, the ship's Captain.

"Now you want as few of my crew as possible up and about." States the Captain in response to your earlier conversation with the head of the Marine squad. "I would suggest my Chief Engineer, the good Doctor as she's already here, two maintinence technicians, a helmsman and our chief navigator. That's seven of us to twenty one of you. More than three to one odds in the event we should try something 'drastic.' Is that acceptable?"

The Marines remain tense, not happy the Captain had been able to listen in on you without being detected for an unknown period of time.

[ ] Agree. "Let get this ship out of here"

Is our current objective to stop the ship from leaving realspace by conducting repairs or something?

afraid I've only caught 1 thread before...

And I'm doing badly at describing a situation again.
    >Is our current objective to stop the ship from leaving realspace by conducting repairs or something?
Your own ship temporarily overloaded the device that was causing the ship to fade in and out of reality it by extending it's FTL drive field.
After boarding the ship you revived the good Doctor Sanjukta who disabled the device that was causing the problem. The ship is now safely adrift inside the Nebula you're in.

You are faced with the dilemma of what to do with the rather powerful warship. You could revive the crew and get it back to a friendly system, try to take control of it yourself and return with it as a trophy, or even destroy the ship to prevent pirates from finding it later.
In the last thread anon suggested reviving a handfull of crewmen that could run the ship and bring it back to base.

    >[X] Agree. "Let get this ship out of here"

We should probaby resolve this situation quickly as we still have to find that jammer.

Oh, and what's that about the crew's appearances you keep mentioning? Some kind of sickness related to the device hiding the ship in subspace?

    >Oh, and what's that about the crew's appearances you keep mentioning? Some kind of sickness related to the device hiding the ship in subspace?
Everyone looks old. The Captain specifically looks absolutely horrible. You think.
Switching your suit coms you talk to the medic.
"Is there any chance everyone aboard was affected by being through that subspace transitioning?"
"I dont think so, they were all in stasis. I mean, I assume the Captain was as well."

"Let get this ship out of here." You tell the Captain.

A couple of Marines keep a close eye on him as he moves to some of the other stasis chambers and opens them. Another Human, Kavarian and Rovinar wake up a minute or so after their pods are opened. Three Marines are assigned to watch each of them. The three engineers seem somewhat annoyed by the soldiers getting in their way but otherwise dont protest.

"The other two we'll need are on the Bridge." Captain Udashi informs you.

Do you wish to go to the Bridge with the Captain and his escort or remain in engineering?

You nod your acknowledgement to the Captain and move to follw him.

"Sergeant I'm headed to the bridge with the Captain. If the engineers do anything suspicious please dont kill them straight off."
"Fine. But I reserve the right to stun them if they try anything." Says the older man, checking the charge pack on his phase carbine.

As you start your trek towards the bridge you begin to feel gratefull you've been excercising lately. The weight of the armored vac suit can be tiring.

"Full power has not yet been restored." The Captain informs you as you make your way forward. After a few minutes you reach a working lift and climb aboard.

"New recruit?" He asks you as you wait to arrive.
"You dont have a House crest with your unit listed on your armor. Only training squadrons have those."

"What House are you from if you dont mind my asking sir?" You enquire to deflect attention.
    He smiles but doesnt answer.

    >AFK for 30 minutes. left my laptop at the shop

The lift arrives at the bridge with you still uncertain if the Captain is being a smug bastard Noble or just playing since you tried to change topic. The command center of this is is much larger than that of your Corvette. There are enough stations for thirty people and jumpseats for a good dozen more. The helm has a panoramic monitor surrounding it much like your own but with additional holographic emitters lining the ceiling and floor where the half sphere is open. You're certain that from the inside it would seem to be a closed sphere when active.

Captain Udashi heads straight for a bank of stasis chambers built into the back of the bridge but obviously noticed your intrest. "Not many ships in this size range are fast enough to warrant a main display like that. Our helmsman used to be a starfighter pilot. After spending a decade like that he wanted to fly something a bit bigger."

The Helmsman and navigator are revived without incident and take their stations.

You contact the ship. "Chief we're preparing to get the ship underway. Could you ask Linda to plot us jump coordinates?"

When the jump data is transmitted over the Dro'all manning the navigation console makes a face.
"What the fuck am I reading? This is a badly plotted jump."
"Can you extrapolate the destination and replot it?" Asks the Captain.
    "Yes sir... done."

[ ] Convince them to use Linda's jump data
[ ] Dont tell Linda they've changed their own jump data

"Just like most of the crew, our navigator, Linda, is fresh from the academy. Could you be so kind and walk her through the process of plotting the jump properly? I'd be extra gateful if you could do it without hurting her feelings, she's feeling bad enough about her capabilities already, and I have to make do with her. Please?"
    >> Anonymous 02/14/12(Tue)17:14 No.17949244
    >>17948840
The navigator facepalms at your request.
"Lieutenant." Speaks up the Captain. "Not everyone has the best equipment or training available to plot hyperaccurate jumps like we can. Please humor our would be rescuers so that we can get the hell out of here without more trouble."

"Yes sir." After a sigh the Dro'all woman contacts your ship.

"Training corvette JD4408 getting some, er... minor variance in jump plot. Requesting you re-verrify FTL drift calc for gravity shift beyond one lightyear distance."

"Gravity shift?" Is Lindas response. "But that shouldnt have... oh. Retransmitting data."

"Thank you, new data recieved." The navigator stabbs a button on the console. "Channel closed. The new numbers are better this time. Not pritty but a lot better."

The Chief's voice comes over your helmet coms next. "Pilot Sonia, power output from the Endeavour has increased, their drives are now powering up."

Looking over at the status displays at the operations console you confirm they're showing the same thing. Vibrations runs through the ship as the sublight drives kick in one by one.
"Wait for the ship to jump then follow." You tell the Chief.

"Sublight drives are ready. Setting course and beginning run up for jump."
"Jump data is locked. Core is now online, no unexpected feedback from cross-core discharge. Drive plates have power."

Once the other officers have completed their checks the Captain looks to you. "This is your show, tell us when to jump."

    "I guess begin jump?"

A bright flash of light fills then bridge as the Navigator presses the throttle forward. In less than a second you're back in the system you launched on your mission from.

"That was the fastest jump I've ever seen." You say in amazement.

Your Corvette drops out a few hundred km away ten seconds later.

The communication and sensor consoles lights up around the same time.

"Pilot Sona we're being hailed by Knight Lieutenant Dayton." Reports Kavos. "I'm patching you through now.

"Wait what about-" You dont have time to finish before your CO is on the line.

"This is Dayton, we were about to send a seach party out to check your seach coordinates. What's your status. And wait, what? Why is there a Medium Cruiser with no IFF lit sitting alongside you?"

    >Your explanation?

"Sir, our search didn't turn up any information on the jammers we were looking for, but our last jump brought this cruiser to our attention. We weren't able to send a message because we were still getting jammed.
Upon closer investigation, it seemed like they we're having severe troubles for quite some time, so we decided to lend a helping hand.
I assume you have heard of the TCS Endeavour?"

"I wh- It, ah, you erm." The Knight took a moment to clear his throat. "Direct it to dock at the shipyard immediately. Make it clear they are to not revive any more of the crew than you have already. Once the ship has docked you are all to be put under quarantine for 24 hours even if you havent cracked your suit seals. If any of the ships weapons power up it will be considered hostile and will be fired upon. Everyone aboard that's currently consious will be debriefed."

You quickly relay this to the Captain who doesnt seem surprised.

"If it helps we can vent the atmosphere from aboard though I highly doubt any biological contaminant was responsible for our system malfunction."

You mention battle damage you saw on the side of the ship but he waves it off as minor. "We took a few hits from renagade House ships while we were first deploying. Dont worry about this ship."

After docking at the far end of the shipyard you, the Marines and the skeleton crew disembark. Station security all wearing their own vacsuits seperate everyone, directing all of you to temporary quarters. You wait for three hours before a medic sees to you, taking scans of the air, your suit and finally telling you to stip off your armor fo more conventional tests.

"You should be free to go in another day." the medic informs you. "You'll be able to communicate with your commanding officer and other members of your squadron but it will be monitored. Dont worry, this happens from time to time."

You call up your CO to see what is happening and what he plans to do about all of it.

"I dont know if I should love you or hate you pilot. If you'd dragged back any other ship I'd be ecstatic but this is getting way above my pay grade. The quarantine thing is just standard bullshit to buy time while security searches the ship. They havent told me if they're found anything nor do I expect them to.
First of all you're sworn to secrecy. I dont care if you didnt see anything on that ship you're not to tell anyone even that much. This ship never existed. You went out, you had some drive trouble and returned to base once it was fixed. Your ship is in dock for 'repairs' as long as you're in lockdown. Someone will make sure to quietly transfer some requisition your way but that may take a few day or weeks.
There's a highspeed courrier headed to the capital to get orders on what to do with the ship and crew. I intend to have you and yours the hell out of this system before they get back."

"The House Capital sir? That would only take a few minutes to get there."
"No. The capital of the Ruling House. They have jurisdiction with crews from other Factions. Once you're out we're not coming back to this system until the whole thing has blown over."

Before signing off the Knight sends you a picture of the ship in dock. Holographic emitters are being placed on construction suport arms to disguise the ship as a damaged section of the shipyard.

You contact Linda and ask how she's doing with studying her jump calculations.
"I guess I've been messing up my drift curves whenever I screw up a jump. For some jumps you dont even need them, for others I think I've been screwing up what effects gravity has at long range. I'm getting closer, it's just going to take me awhile longer."

You ask how much it would cost to get a tutor.
"More than I can afford right now and i'd need to be removed from duty while undergoing the training that goes with it, which means I dont get payed."

    "How did you graduate then?"
"I passed by one percent. I was the lowest rated in my class."

Next you try to contact some of the crew from the Endeavour. The Doctor doesnt respond, probably in debriefing, but the Captain does. In the few hours since you last saw him he doesnt seem quite as thin and he appears to be getting some of his skin colour back.

"You want information? Haha, oh young people, young humans anyways. What's that experssion? Curiosity killed the cat. Oh who am I kidding what do you want to know?"

    >FIELD TOO LONG
"Do people still talk about the Faction Wars? The Kavarians take a lot of flak for their role in the wars. Their war of independence from the Dominion that sparked off the arms races. It wasnt just them though, everyone had a part in it. The Houses were a mess, the Terran Alliance was on the brink of becoming a superpower and the Rovinar meddled trying to prevent another war that might leave them the worse off.
The road to the Faction wars was paved in good intentions. How were the Rovinar supposed to know the terms of peace would rip apart both the Human and Dro'all empires? Too Naive to know better is what they were. The Dominion just handled their own civil war better than the Terrans did, we have experience in these things after all. Theirs spilled over, dragged everyone in. Once we were all too preocupied only then did the Kavarians try to break away. By then the Dominion had copied nearly every piece of advanced technology the Terrans had. Then the Kavarians stole it from us AND the Ruling House's cloning technology. Oh that was a mess.
There was one thing the Kavarians borrowed from the Terrans the Houses did not though; Super heavy Cruisers. The Terrans had already abandoned the concept. The ships were too huge, too wasteful to build, but the Kavarians are masters of mass production.
The First Faction war was everyone against the Kavarians and they lost. In the second the Dominion stayed out of it. For eight bloody months Terran and Rovinar space ceased to exist. But! The Terrans created their greatest weapons only after their civil war had ended, when they lacked shipyards and manpower to keep up in any other way. They armed the distant Republic with these weapons and the Kavarians fell. Together the Factions saw to it they would never stand on their own again."

The old man paused and looked back at the display.
"Dont think for a moment though that the Dominion stayed out of the second war. The Kavarians hired fleets from the Minor Houses, some say as many as one hundred minor Houses participated. When the Great Houses were certain the war had turned against them then we threw in with the Terrans and Republic if only to be saved from their wrath later."

"What about the Neeran?" You ask. "The Doctor mentioned something about them and this fleet."

"Dont worry about the Neeran. After this many years if you havent heard of them already then perhaps we overestimated them back then."

Being locked inside a set of guest quarters turns out to be helpfull when it comes to writing out reports you find. There isnt a whole lot else you could do with your time other than bother your NCO and squad mates. The Chief is working on reports of his own but has time to tell you that the rest of the squadron headed out to hunt down some of the jammers based on the sensor data.

    Dammit.

Oh well, you found a ship dammit, that's gotta count for something! The Chief also tells you Linda has been locked in her quarters but you assure him she's probably just studying.

Next you try to come up with a reason for reccomending the Marine Sergent for a comendation but nothing really stands out. Oh well, you're certain you'll find something for him, it pays to have somebody whose both paranoid and concerned for the safety of the House around.

Despite the enclosed space you're still able to get some exercise, even doing some shadow boxing and pushups with the armor on. The remaining time you split between sleeping and studying. You shower just before the time runs out on the quarentine.

At the 24 hour mark you and the Marines are allowed to depart after another scan. Making sure not to waste time you tell the others to get back to the ship as quickly as possible in case Dayton's order hadnt made it to the others.

"Welcome aboard." Kavos greets you. "We're ready to cast off when you are. Supplies are stocked and all crew are aboard."

"What happened with the Squadron?" You ask.
"They killed a few jammers but not all of them. Something came up with the compiled sensor data so we're returning to base before being redeployed to Loran II again."

As you sit down and look around the monitor you spot the rest of the squadron. Lt Dayton's still damaged looking cruiser at the center of the formation.

"Is the Knight's ship ready for combat?" You ask.
"I think he plans on exchanging it for another once back at base. Speaking of which, they should have some more ships available when we get there. The Previous training squadrons have likely graduated by now meaning your group is up next in priority."

You throw on your headset and report in just before undocking.

"About time Ms Reynard." Responds the Knight. "Everyone form up for jump. We'll have to swing around to the far side of the Gas Giant."

Cranking your throttle it doesnt take much time to join up with the Squadron's formation as they begin a slingshot orbit. You pass close enough to make out lightning from the huge planet's storms swirling below.
"You missed a good fight." Alex tells you.
"One sided you mean." Mike responds. "They were all light freighters. Frigates or Corvettes, they didnt stand a chance against a group of ships."

Before you can start asking questions about the jammers they fought the Lt breaks in.
    "Jumps are precalculated. Transmitting now."
"Data recieved." reports Linda. "Now exiting gravity well. Ready to jump in five."

You match speed with the others and in unison the squadron jumps home.
