"That," Sean says, "-is the biggest fucking rocket I've ever seen."

You grin, and run a finger over the guide-fin of the lowest RP-3 rocket. The massive rockets, with their 60-pound warheads, are mounted three to a wing in triangle-shaped hardpoints.

"Didn't think we had enough room inboard of the engines for anything but bombs," you say. "This... this is kind of awesome."

"We aim to please," Aussie Lassitude informs you. "And after I shot you three times, figured I should do something to show no hard feelings."

"The hell you did. Minna got me twice!"

    "She what?" drawls Lassitude.

    "She what?" says Sean.

    "She what?" sniggers Ian.

You narrow your eyes at Aussie Lassitude. "I'll get you. And your little crocodile, too."

He snorts and waves you away. Having finally reacquired your pants, you and your crew are ready to take to the air. You go through your preflight check, checking the airelons, spoilerons, elevator, check, rudder, check, bored, check. powerplants, muahahahahahaha. The huge Double-Wasp radials kick over eagerly with a throaty roar, and soon your combat-loaded fighter is hurtling down the runway.

You circle Castle Barin for a bit, gaining altitude.

"Sure is pretty, isn't it?" Ian marvels.

You roll Club Ghostrider onto one wing so you can all look down at the Castle. It's mid-afternoon, and the white stone of the castle is catching the light nicely.

    "It sure is," you agree.

"Cut the shit," Sean grunts from the back. "Time for me to work my ma-"

"HA-HA AWESOME GET TO IT," Ian says in brittle tones, and you hear him kick the divider between his compartment and the back of your cockpit.

Hi! New player here, interested in the various quests of /tg/.
I assume this one is about magical girls with giant weapons.

Is there anything else I need to know to participate, other than "Magical girls use giant weapons"?

Didn't see an answer in the last thread, so reposting in hopes of getting an answer.

    Hey Planefag, setting question.

Does this castle have some sort of intercom system or something similar? And would the master control of said system be found in Minna's office or in some room we've been in enough times to notice?

Also, something I forgot that I need to add. What is the common format for listening to music in this era? In a discussion thread I think timeline puts it as either vinyls or 12 inch gramophones, but you probably know your setting better than any of us.

You climb to around 15,000 feet, then set out on your first search leg as you fiddle with the heater settings. It isn't five minutes before Sean crows with victory.

"Stop yer grinnin and drop your linen," he says excitedly. "I've found 'em."

    "That fast?"

"Reception is much better up here then inside the hangar," he says. "And now that we're moving... I've got to keep tracking with the D/F loop, so... yeah. Yeah. It's a directional broadcast, all right, coming straight from Calais."

    "No shit?"

"Yeah, but there's an omnidirectional transmitter somewhere inland..." he muses. "Very strong, too, but extremely low frequency. 40mhz. Or lower. Doubt the Brits have any military sets tuned to that. Picking up something faint on the 20-28 Mhz band, too, same general area. Inland."

"28 megahertz?" you say. "Shit, that won't go past ten miles, man!"

"On the ground, no but we've got altitude," Sean reminds you. "The Afrika Korps was using that band for short-range field communications. The ionosphere is just right the past few years; the signals sometimes bounce off and come down hundreds of miles away. They call it 'skip.' MI-5 was monitoring Afrika Korps field comms that way."

    "No shit," you marvel. "Still..."

"Martians," Sean says, and you shut up. All other things equal, the bastards are terrifying and their abilities are poorly-understood. If 28mhz transmissions are known to "skip" then there's a great likelyhood that the Martians have exploited the effect reliably. They can do many things better then humans, but they can't break the known laws of physics.

    Most of the time.

Sorry, forgot to answer you. It's mostly phone lines strung throughout the building, lots of dialing extensions. The cords are just taped to the old stonework in the older parts of the castle, up high with other cabling runs. There's a limited intercom system for public address; you use it through the phone system. Theoretically anybody could use it...

As for setting-wise stuff, unless specifically stated otherwise it's exactly as it was in 1943. So yes, vinyl is the order of the day.

Twenty minutes later, Sean tersely requests a heading change. You oblige.

"I'm pretty sure we've got another transmitter near St. Lo. Or Point-Du-Hoc," he says at length.

"Pretty wide range," Ian comments. "What, that's a good thirty miles? Further?"

"Interference," Sean bitches. "These signals aren't..." he sighs. "They're weird as shit. I've seen something like this before, when Sanya's singing. There's something else going on, a magic component-"

"Martians don't use magic," you and Ian say in unison.

"Then there's only one other possibility," Sean says.

Nobody comes right out and says "psionics." Nobody really wants to. It's foolish, perhaps, but the possibility of Martian psionics has been kicked around a lot, and it's utterly fucking terrifying. Machine-to-machine and organism-to-organism, Man and Martian are damn well matched - it's the Witches that give humanity an edge. If the Martians have something paranormal up their sleeve as well...

"Anyways, I think there's multiple transmitters, all on the occupied coast. Perhaps aiding each other, a multi-frequency beam, whatever... point is, they're pretty concentrated. The secondary beams...." Sean sighs. "I wish we had Sanya along."

"Right, let psychochick get another blast of Martian mindfuck," Ian says.

Ok, fine. What I'm saying is that we should trust them in combat (whether in the air or on the ground), but in pretty much anything else we should be healthily skeptical. I'm not saying we need to check our milk for poison, but when it's something that could related to our magic, or us getting shipped off someplace, we shouldn't take them at their word. At least for now we have enough other people around that we can double check them on stuff.

You wheel the Widow around on a north-northwest heading via Sean's request, heading towards London to get a better fix on where the beams are crossing.

"Think we'll find beams crossing over the Rolls-Royce plant like they did in 1940?" you ask wryly.

"Mmm, no," Sean says thoughtfully. "Though I'll bet you ten fucking dollars those rocket-bombs we intercepted the other day were riding one of these beams."

    Oh.

    Oh FUCK.

The rocket-bombs are bad enough; but at least they're nothing humanity can't do - if anything, the German V-1 rockets are a little more effective and the Martians seem to tie up more fighters then they need trying to intercept them; compared to what humans employ against rocket-bombs. But if they're guided... if they can concentrate those mostly-random weapons around a tighter area...

"Getting something on Morse," Sean says, surprised. You hear him scribbling in the back, cursing softly every now and then.

Somebody at Fighter Command translates the Morse faster. The transmission snaps into your earphones as Ian links the secondary radio with the intercom.

"-eat, distress signal from Allied fleet bearing One-Nine-Zero from Dover Station, distance one-ten miles, under intermittent air attack. All available fighters, repeat, all available fighters take vector One-Niner-Zero, Allied fleet under air attack..."

    Well, shit.

"Well, are we dancing, or what?" Sean asks.

You muse. You didn't take drop tanks, and with your time already in the air, you'll be pushing your endurance to make the intercept, even at best endurance. Especially with the drag from the rockets.

On the other hand, men are dying. And-

"-the Witches hardly have the range," Ian points out.

    "The Brits?"

"Spitfires? Hurricanes? The concept of 'combat endurance' is foreign to them, literally."

    "Well our own stuff-"

"-is over occupied France, hitting their hives," Ian points out. "This time of day the bombers and escorts are still coming home."

"They should be closer to the Spanish coast-"

"Yeah, they keep a ton of air assets rear-deployed there," Ian snorts. He's right, too - the Iberian front is too badly pressed to keep much back for maritime attack.

On the other hand, there are battles every day, and you don't want to leave these beams ignored for much longer.

"... we've got a job to do," you conclude. "Find aliums, and ram 20mm cannon shells up their asses."

"YES!" Ian says, delighted. Sean gets on the horn and transmits your findings back to Castle Barin, cursing at the necessity. You hear him bip-bip-bipping out a terse summary via Morse Code, one thing the Martians seem completely incapable of understanding on the best of days. You bring the P-61 up to about three-hundred forty MPH, a bit faster then your best-endurance, but all the better to reach the fight while you can still make a difference.

You've a combat radius of six hundred miles or so; but you've already been in the air for a bit and once you enter combat, you're going to eat towards bingo fuel quick.

    There's never enough fuel.

You make good time, coming into the fray at around 20,000 feet. From your altitude you've got a great look at the sprawling battle developing below.

"That," Ian says, "Is not a convoy."

Tilting your Widow, you can make out at least two battleships below, sailing abreast of each other, bright flashes issuing from their guns occasionally. A bevy of destroyers accompany them, and you think you see some merchants making a break for the open ocean. Aircraft both human and alien clutter the skies.

    And-

    "Jesus Fucking Christ," you state.

"Indeed," Ian says, his voice strained.

Vs the Martian Knickebein mindbeams, a single heavy fighter doesn't make a convincing strike group. Also flying off to attack them when WE'RE THE ONLY ONES WHO KNOW ABOUT THEM is such a very bad idea.

This was a recon mission for what it's worth, nothing we can really do. Return to base, report our findings. If you want, have Ian write a brief report on the way back. Turn that in and have the ground crew refuel the plane.

Also planefag, where is this "Castle Barin" we're at? I'm going to assume it's not the one in Syria.

Damn, I really wanted to go for the critical enemy communications system, but I guess it's just another air-battle for us.

Now that Ian has unlocked his magic, we might be able to seriously fuck them up. Let's strafe around the outside of the fight and harass them until we get a following, then we dive over one of our battleships and let the cannons fuck up the pursuers.
    >> Anonymous 02/23/12(Thu)23:40 No.18075811
So guys, we're committed, now we need to think strategy.
I'm thinking we coast up high and send lovenotes way, way downrange. Don't forget Ian knows he's the chosen gun now--something tells me he's gonna make the Hispanos sing.

So we stay high and dry acting as a gunship, fighting at maximum effective range, trying to avoid bleeding our fuel for maneuvers.

Someone who knows our plane and ordnance better can tell me if this is a good idea or god dammit anon territory.

Two of the big sea-going ones are trading blows with the battleships - even from 20,000 feet you can see the steam blowing off the water over the thousands of yards between the dueling parties as their huge Maser batteries go to work. But it's the airborne one that draws your attention.

"Never seen that kind in the warbook," Ian says.

"What do you think he's packing?" you muse.

"Nothing good," Sean observes. "Looks like he's descending, too; he's going to park over the ships and whack any air cover."

As you watch, small dark shapes start to drop out of the dreadnaught.

"Fuck me sideways with a chainsaw," Sean mutters.

Martian Dreadnaughts are the size of battleships, and *are* battleships, for all effects and purposes. Except some of them can fly. The oceangoing ones are no great shakes against human battleships; Masers are their best weapon and they fare poorly over water - to say nothing of the Black Smoke.

But the airborne ones are a different story. A bunch of them got shot to hell by Luftwaffe 88mm flak guns during the initial attack; but short of prepared defenses they're like battleships you can't use torpedoes on and can rarely hit with bombs.

    Now rockets... especially BIG rockets...

And we're AMERICANS. Did George Washington go "That's GREAT BRITAIN...GREAT FUCKING BRITAIN." and refuse to lead the Revolutionary Army because he was afraid to take on the world's most powerful empire? No, he put his teeth in and cracked jokes about how bullets whizzing past had a certain music to them, because that's what Americans do. We look straight-on at the biggest motherfucker in the room and we TAP HIS DAMN NUTS.

"Hey," Sean says. "Remember that Lightning driver? The one in the Stars'n'Stripes a week or two ago?"

"Yeah.." you say, the memory coming back. "Cracked open a Dread with HVARs and a steep dive. High-angle pass."

    "Worth a shot?"

You grin. "These sixty-pounders pack a bigger punch then any HVARs, too."

"Going alone against point-defenses like that? We're dead men."

"We don't have the airtime to dick about," you point out, and turn the P-61 to intercept.

But not all fortune is cruel.

"... what the fuck are YOU idiots doing here?"

You start, then look around suspiciously. Below, around 12,00 feet or so, you spot two wings of... the sillouete is distinctive. Widows.

    "LUKE!?"

"No shit. Get down here and form up, moron."

"We've got rockets, sir. We were going to take a poke at that airborne dread."

There's silence for a second. "I hope you assholes brought oars. Okay, we'll draw his fire from below, and you make your run."

The airborne dread is still descending, and now it's ponderously turning towards the incoming eight Widows. You see patches of its dark mottled hide glow cherry-red; the lenses of the masers warming as it begins engaging the weaving Widows. You gain a little more altitude, wait for the right angle, and triple-check the arming switches of the rockets.

    And then you dive.

And nothing dives quite like a Black Widow.

The dread is hovering around fourteen thousand feet or so, giving you plenty of room to come screaming down atop him in a power dive. You keep the throttles back for safety, but even so the Black Widow trembles and vibrates dangerously as the laden aircraft pushes close to the do-not-exceed speed, five-fifty or so MPH. It's a little funny that you're using Frank Luke's own technique for attacking observation balloons from the First World War - a steep diving pass to take you out of the danger zone as fast as possible.

The dread expands in your gunsight, and the Widow bucks as shrapnel hits it. You put a little spin in it as the maser lenses begin to glow, twisting your fighter around the invisible beams of heat, and guiding her through the fullisides of mini rockets that come spiraling up at you. You unleash the cannons, screaming with exhilaration as they unload on the dread, and mash the firing stud for the rockets. All six heavy rockets plunge off the rails and down at the dread, and with the steep dive angle there's no drop and little deviation to worry about.

You see them slam into the dread with magnificent explosions a fraction of a second before the dread vanishes under your nose as you pull up a little to slip by. The Widow bucks again as more enemy fire finds her, but the gauges remain good.

Same way the bombs wouldn't. Hell, on some fighters your drop angle was limited by that; bombs striking the prop would kill you.

In your case you're using dangly racks (more drag) with a slight downward angle (difficult targeting.) Later models of Widow will mount them on the outer wing, as they should be.

"SECONDARIES! SECONDARIES!" Sean is howling from the back. "HOT DAMN!" His hoots of exultation are cut short as you yank back on the yoke, drawing a few G-forces as you pull out of the dive.

"Nice shot, kid!" Luke calls over the radio. A few seconds later you see the P-61s of the 442nd Squadron nosing up at the dread's belly, cannon shells flashing towards it.

"Level aircraft, four-o'clock," Ian says. "Think the're a wing of Beaus."

    "Forts or Fighters?"

"Fuck you, my eyes ain't THAT good."

"Time to go home, I think," you say. Tilting on your wing, you check out the battlefield again. You see the minute wakes of what are probably friendly torpedo boats from the Spanish coast. And-

"Fuck, that's the Richelieu," Ian says. "She's burning."

Indeed she is. The distinctive ship with her forward-stacked armament is listing badly, and a thick pall of smoke is pouring from her rear area.

    "What's the other one?"

Ian squints. "Deutchland-class, from the turrets. Pocket battleship."

You both watch the battle below in awe. Even from twelve-thousand feet the clash of titans is immense, and the swirling dots of human and alien aircraft seem almost insignificant.

While you're busy watching, the Martian fighters take you from behind.

Wait, I just realized something. If the Aliums invaded in October 1940 (which is the date planefag mentioned back on day 2), this means they attacked before the IJN made their raid on Pearl Harbor. Do you know what this means? This means that the IJN and the USN don't hate each others guts, and are maintaining much respect for each other.

My god, Yamamoto and Nimitz. Halsey and Nagumo. Spruance and Yamaguchi. All working together leading their combined fleets. The Pacific Ocean has to be the safest place on the fucking planet.

    "GHOSTRIDER CHECK SIX!"

Instead of checking six, you simply enter a brief snap-roll and develop it into a sharp diving break-turn. All three of you grunt under the G-forces as you roll inverted, then back the other way to pull the other way. Through the top of your canopy you see the Martian fighter, an asymmetric vessel with narrow, small wings at the end, something like a needle-nosed missile. It's strangely graceful, and roughly equivalent to a human single-seat fighter.

    Sucks to be him.

You pull back towards him, but he out-turns you handily - but his rockets rake empty air, your Widow diving under them. As you roll your fighter to the right and pull back into the second reversal, you climb a bit, and once again rockets flash past, this time underneath.

You've got him in roll-rate, but your heavy fighter is bleeding smash quick.

Properly performed, that maneuver also includes left or right input from the rudder. It's called "skidding", and it's actually a much riskier way to force an overshoot than a barrel roll. It works best when you're being bounced from 12, so coming out of a turning engagement it's even worse.

You long to floor the throttles, let the mighty wrath of the Double-Wasps feed you the juice to pull this sucker into the rolling scissors until you can slide in behind him and shoot the hell out of him. But without the fuel to do so, you're trapped in the flat scissors. This kind of fight generates a lot of brief snap-shots, and unless you follow him into the vertical, he's going to get the lions share.

Or he would, if you weren't in a fucking Black Widow.

    "Ian!" you cry.

"Got it," he says, his voice full of relish.

"Two more on our ass!" Sean tells you.

Motherfuck. Whoever told you to Check Six had better get here, and fast. In the meantime, you roll sharply to the left and haul back towards the Martian. You're well offset now, deep into the developing flat scissors, and you almost get a snap-shot on the sonofabitch, but he's learned fast, ducking beneath your gunsight. In the fraction of a second you lose sight of him you know he'll be taking to the vertical more and more, using the gravity assist to tighten his turns. The Widow rolls back to the right, and you look out the top of your canopy in time to see the top of the Martian fighter, its shiny translucent canopy facing you, almost even with your fighter. You both pull back towards each other.

You've got him dead to rights in the flat scissors, but as you suspected, he's using the vertical more and more to compensate by tightening his turns in the switchbacks. Next reversal, he'll probably have a brief angle on you.

That's when Ian lights him up with the turret. You watch the stream of tracers walk right over the slender fighter, from the cockpit to the tail, and it dives under you on the next reversal. You roll left again, keeping up the sharp turns that are keeping the other bandits from raping you, and looking down your left wing you see the striken fighter's smoke trail trailing towards the sea below.

That's the funny thing about the scissors - it puts your bandit in the top-arc, and turrets give no fucks about angles.

"Let's see the matchstick special do that, you fucking Brits!" you cry jubilantly.

That's when the other two start taking shots at you. With two of them, they can simply widen their formation a bit and nail you at one end or the other of your weaves.

"Weave, you sonofabitch, Weave!" As you roll back the other way you see another Black Widow, canopy to yours, with Frank Luke's personal insignia on the nose. You haul the yoke back and turn towards him, your paths crossing. Any Martian that tries to follow one of you will blunder into the guns of the other on the next reversal - a defensive use of the scissors, in essence.

    Unfortunately, the bastards aren't stupid.

He'll have a snap shot, so I can only think of one option, which is to follow through on this turn and roll over the top to kill airspeed and force the overshoot rather than allow him that window. At worst we can try to disengage and wait for backup, and at best we get a shot.

They stay above you, diving down to take quick passes on your fighters, then climbing again, out of reach. You and Frank keep on weaving, your radiomen calling out to each other when you see a Martian fighter nosing down to take a swipe. Sweat runs down your forehead as you put your muscles behind every reversal, chilly in the cold air at 12,000 feet.

But eventually, they get lazy - and stop climbing.

    You have them.

You wait till they pair off, one clearly latching onto Frank's ship and another onto yours, then break hard right and keep going in a steep diving turn. The Martian follows you easy. Either the other one will follow and you'll be the bait for Frank's backstab, or they'll wisely stick to their man, and a few seconds later Sean confirms they are.

You throw the huge Black Widow into a sharp reversal, diving steeply to keep away from the Martians gunsights, then reverse again, climbing a bit. It's not quite the rolling scissors just yet, but it's getting close - and the sharp turns are bleeding smash at a tremendous rate. Energy is your lifeblood, and you're siphoning it.

And the dumb son-of-a-bitch behind you matches move-for-move.

"He's saddling up!" Sean cries out, letting you know the Martian is matching your speed and latching onto your ass from fifty or sixty yards away, all the better to rip you to pieces. A smarter Martian would be looping into the air above you, then diving back down for the shot, to keep behind you without shedding smash - but that'd put him in the turret's arc, and you've just taught his wingleader to respect it.

Your sharp defensive maneuvers have bled off your speed, and without energy, you can't maneuver. Your Widow begins to mush about, responding weakly to the yoke, waddling through the air like a big, fat, slow turkey.

"HE'S ON US!" Sean screams, and then you outmaneuver the Martian.

Most planes mush at low speed, especially big, heavy ones - bleeding smash quickly and dying pathetically soon after.

The P-61 Black Widow is not most planes.

The Widow's dual aerilons and spoileron system give her a nimbleness unheard of in such a big plane, at any speed, but this close to stall the huge wings, powerful engines, and zap-flaps let her flit around like a fucking butterfly. You bank and slide away from the Martian's guns in the blink of an eye, the charade over, and cut across his path as he tries to follow. Yet another reversal and you pass directly beneath him, and you see his nose waving. Now HE is mushing, in earnest, the nimble needle-nosed fighter not meant for such low-speed knife-fighting.

The Martian knows the jig is up; as his fighter stalls he dives for the deck, hoping to disengage before you know what's up. Unfortunately for him, you've got three pairs of eyes in the plane. Sean calls the move almost immediately, and you roll inverted and dive after the shithead.

And nothing dives quite like a Black Widow. You start rolling, keeping your wings level with the Martians as he enters a gentle defensive spiral, and steady your reflector gunsight over the slim fighter as it tries to out-dive you.

    As.

    Fucking.

    If.

The quad cannons speak their savage fury, and the Martian fighter catches one of the high-explosive shells on the tail, throwing it out of its defensive spiral. Several more shells hammer it and it blows apart, scattering debris through the air. You hear some of it CLANG! against your ship as you fly through the edge of it.

    "GOTCHA, BITCH! AH HA HA!"

You level out, scanning the sky. There's a distant dot you think is Luke, and he's flying alone.

    "Get yours?" you call out.

"No shit. And I'm counting, too. Hey, company, four o'clock."

    You look.

"Can't see shit, Major." All you can make out is some dots at a distance - a GOOD distance. They dive towards the fray below.

"Friendlies, probably Navy fliers," Luke says. "Saragota? Or Lexington. They'd be early, though."

You scan your chest, checking for bullet holes, then scan your pants for wetness, then scan your gauges.

    You scan them again.

You tap one of them, really hard.

    "Sean, are we leaking anything?"

    There's a moment of silence.

"If I were to tell you I see a mostly-clear substance being sucked into the slipstream near my window, what would that mean?"

"It means," you say, "that we're leaking fuel."

Probably once there were enough Essex-class ships to cover the Pacific and then some. Keep Sara and the Lady a bit closer to LBA, repair yards and refueling.

Wonder if Wasp is tearing shit up in the Med alongside Ark Royal, or if they both still had dates with submarines in this timeline.

Well, since the US never went to war with Japan, the USN doesn't have to devote nearly as many resources to the Pacific since I'm pretty sure the Japanese and British navy elements there can handle things beyond Hawaii.

Even better, Flying B-17s or JU-88s on long-distance strikes from the deck of the Shinano. Fucker was theoretically big enough to handle the things, IIRC.

The Brits probably have squat in the Pacific at the start. Until they can free up decks from the Atlantic and the Med, the Pacific is a Japanese and American show.

Especially with Suez gone. Indian Ocean is going to soak up spare British carriers first, plus they can't get them over there anywhere near as quickly as the US or Japan can.

...well, I'll be damned. You COULD actually theoretically launch B-17s from the Shinano, or at least land them.

Now, ANY OTHER CARRIER will have a slight problem known as the "Island" if you tried.
    >> Anonymous 02/24/12(Fri)01:43 No.18077657
    >>18077601
Shinano's Flight deck was 40 m (131 ft 3 in), minus the superstructure which I'm not entirely sure of.

    B-17 had a wingspan of 103 ft 9 in (31.62 m)

So, it'd be tight and the Superstructure would probably fuck it up, but if it had a fuckmassive catapult on the foredeck, it could theoretically launch (though probably not land) an B-17.

Shinano was a shitpile that only seemed like a good idea because Japan was desperate for decks. I'd rather have a bunch of Taiho-class carriers instead. Plus a few more I-400s for some good old-fashioned SURPRISE BUTTSEX against the aliums. And in this universe, you can stack a whole bunch of Witches onto a Sen Toku instead of three planes, so they've got some serious striking power.
