    PREVIOUSLY, ON METAHUMAN RENAISSANCE:
Javelin explored the back rooms of the History Museum, seeking out strange new objects to be intrigued by, but completely ignoring some others. Like BOOKS. Very SCARY BOOKS. After that, Ashwood found the Black Rock Box missing! Then the lights went out, and Dan and Ashwood (who is a total badass) were attacked by various and Sundry Golems! Including one made of dead people they are fighting RIGHT NOW!

You now stand facing the horrible flesh creature, a rotund mound of dead meat made live with its horrible flailing limbs, and gibbering maw which drips black, corrosive ichor. You know it is corrosive, because it hocked a loogie at you a second ago, which is quickly peeling the paint on a forklift behind you. You don't want to know what it'll do to your skin. It is approaching you, maybe 10 yards away, but has to divide its attention between you and Ashwood. Maybe, I mean, its not like it has EYES or anything. Just limbs and a huge mouth.

Ashwood looks at you, and shouts, "Pin it down, and keep it busy. I'm going to try something!" You're about to ask what, when he pivots and slashes the supports for the twenty or thirty foot tall shelves, at his end. They sag, and groan but don't fall over. Ashwood ducks out of sight behind that row of shelves.

(Dropping in the 3 on Agility actually brings it 11 technically, so you're maxed out now.)

"Option!" You say, because seriously, you just have to call your attack sometimes. The little ball of blue-white energy appears, hovering around you, ready to open fire on anything which tries to attack you.

(2x3 and 3x5 on Agility for FULL DEFENSE)
(Flesh Golem gets a whopping 0 matches on ranged attack)
(Option gets a 2x10 on counter attack)

With your option summoned, you focus on being ready to evade, your body tensed to dodge. The horrible abomination scrunches up its mouth and with a sickening "patooie" sound, it hurls a big wad of black spittle at you. Which passes a good two ft to your left, and knocks over rusty old filing cabinet. I guess the 'no eyes' thing isn't working out for it.

In retaliation, Option fires off one of its own bolts, which sails right into that Stygian maw. The creature howls in pain, and takes a couple wild steps back, flailing an arm which sweeps an empty crate off the shelf, scattering splinters of wood and packing material everywhere. It snarls at you, and a much more viscous black fluid streams out from its mouth. Looks like its going to rush you.

Can we use Air Parkour to run up something tall and then leap well outside of its reach? If not, just book it, try to lure it to where the shelves will fall on it. Trust Option to ruin its hypothetical sets if we fail to dodge.

(2x5, 2x7 and 3x6 on Earth Block as a defense)
(Flesh Golem only roles 2x7 on his Charge, which the Evocation gobbles)

"Canaz Tetica!" You shout, and stamp the floor. The floor under it softens, and it sinks a couple inches down, as stone hands shoot up to try and entangle its main limbs. It breaks most of them, but its progress is otherwise impeded. Since it didn't do anything overtly hostile at you, Option doesn't take a shot, though.

You hear the sound of Ashwood's HF Blade slicing through some more supports, and see him at the far end of this shelf row. As only the middle set of supports remains, the whole shelf sags, and leans ominously, a couple of empty display cases and some cleaning supplies fall to the floor.

(Taking this as a Full Defense)
    (2x10 and 3x3 on Agility)
(3x7 on Acid Spit attack, which is the Torso, where Dan has HAR 3, so he takes no damage)

You're getting ready to move, to get out of the way when Ashwood takes the final shot and knocks down the shelf. In the split second you turn your focus to wait for the shelf, you are hit with a horrible spitwad, right in the center of mass. Which slides harmlessly off your breastplate. Didn't know these were nonstick.

Then you hear the sound of a high frequency vibrating katana passing though the wooden struts of a large storage shelf. You notice a gap to your left, in the contents below the shelf, and shoulder roll out of the way, as the entire row comes crashing down on the creature. Luckily, it looks like this shelf was more concerned with short term storage, like spare pallets, empty display cases, boxes of cleaning supplies, and no priceless historical objects were harmed. Probably.

You look over at the pile of debris, which contains one slightly deflated flesh golem, leaking black fluids which smell like the grave everywhere, then back to Ashwood, and give him a thumbs up. He walks over to you. "Any ideas on what this is about?" He asks you. You shake your head. "Didn't find him the first time, gonna try and ping him again."

As you get ready to do your evocation, Alexander says aloud, "I wonder what in this Museum a magister would want? It's not in the store-room, or he would have brought himself and more golems against us." Your about to respond, when Ashwood's bag goes "Mrmrm mrrmrm." And moves a little. You really hope it didn't just talk.

Ashwood unzips the bag, and pulls out a bleached white human skull, missing a lower jawbone. It looks like its been pieced together after being broken. This seems familiar to you, but no, that would be really unlikely. Ashwood places the skull on the opposite shelf, about head height. Then two eerie blue lights appear in its eye sockets. "JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!" You shout, and jump back. "Why do you have the skull of Gespenst!?" You exclaim, rather surprised by this turn of events. "And why is he IN it!?" You follow it up, jabbing a finger at the skull.

The eye lights swivel from you, back to Ashwood. "Herr Ashwood," Says the skull, sounding incredibly German, "Perhaps you should choose your associates more... carefully." Ashwood is unflapped. "The point, Gespenst." He says, exasperatedly, like he's had this conversation before. "Ah, right, vhere vas I? Oh, yes, I was just going to remind you that THE MUSEUM HAS MY STAFF." You didn't know ghost skulls could shout. "Bollocks." Says Ashwood, eloquently.

"The staff is important?" You ask no one in particular. "Vell," says Gespenst, who is apparently just a skull now, "The staff would have absorbed some of my aura from the time I used it. But as a symbol, it is much more powerful. A Necromancer could gather a great many followers under such a standard." Ashwood nods. "And necromancy cults are a bad thing." He takes out his iPad. "I'll just see where that exhibit is relative to here." He begins doing stuff on the tablet.

The skull's eye-lights shift back to you. It is a very creepy sensation. "You boy," it says in a quiet voice. "I can see now, you are very powerful. Like a proper magus. But you lack talent. Come closer," The lights narrow, and you could swear the room gets a little darker. "Let me teach you about the power of Necromancy." Ashwood stops fiddling with his iPad, as he has now found the map, and simply reaches into the bag the skull came from, and produces a geologist's rock hammer. All while never looking away from his tablet. The skull shoots him a glance, and the eye-lights wink out.

Ashwood starts walking to the doors into the office, making sure to take the skull, and stick it back in the bag. "I think the League exhibit is pretty much the exact opposite end from here." He says, as you stride after him.

You push open the double doors into the offices of the Museum, to find a knee-high mist filling the place. As you cross into the mist, you feel sluggish for a moment, then it passes, as your two bands of power flash bright white for a second. The room is dim, almost dark. Several of the lights are on, but muted. You two look around, and spot the intern from earlier lying slumped over her desk, looking like she's asleep.

Ashwood walks over, and puts a finger to her neck. "Pulse." He announces, after a couple second. "Faint, though. And she feels cold." Thinking on that remark, you walk over and put a hand on her cup of coffee, it to is cold, colder than room temperature. "What is this?" You ask aloud. "Enchantment. Powerful sorcery." Says Gespenst, helpfully. "The mist makes all within sleep." Ashwood looks down at the skull. "And we are not effected because?" "The spell is made for mortals. Your friend here draws upon a higher power, and even in a skull, I am to potent for it to even draw near." You look down, and notice now that the mist isn't even touching you, it flows around you.

Since I already moved past that point in the narrative, I'll just explain here that the Staff isn't that inherently magical, maybe a slightly better focus for necromancy than a normal one. But since it belonged to Gespenst, it has a powerful symbolic value.

"So why didn't it reach us in the storage rooms?" Its Ashwood's turn to wonder aloud. "Zhat, I do not know." Says Gespenst. You have a think about it, and recall something from your Tremor Sense earlier. "Air handling." You say. "Huh?" say a student and a skull together. "The storage area has heavy air handling. Combine it with the outside door type seals, it's pretty cut off or filtered from the air out here."

Ashwood nods, and places his tablet down on the desk. "Alright, from where we are, the exhibit is directly opposite us. But, the museum is shaped such so that two wings go around, which meet at that area." He gestures with his hands at the map to demonstrate. "The best chance we have to catch him or his accomplices is to split up, and try who ever finds him to slow him down, while the other cuts him off." You nod. It's a sensible plan. "We can keep in contact with the headset. You take around this way, to the front, through the modern exhibits and the lobby. I'll take the back, through the more ancient wing."

Basically, the enchantment isn't strong enough, or focused enough to affect people with a strong magical aura, or similar. Since Dan has his pacts, on the magicometer, he registers like a full-blown Magister. And Gespenst is really fucking powerful. Or would be if he still had hands.

Well, the obvious use of Necromancy, IE, animating dead and so on, is pretty evil. Desecrating corpses, and all that. But either anti-undead (which, y'know, is also Necromancy) and other spells which manipulate life forces can be good or bad. Magic is usually neutral, except for in the Dresden Files sense that you need to believe in the spell you do to do it.

He packs up his tablet, draws his HF Katana again, and you both head out of the offices, back into the Museum proper, passing some more asleep people on the way, including a guard in a chair by the door, who may have been out like a light before magic got involved. You and Ashwood part ways, and you find yourself in an area on the Vietnam War/Hiveling Invasion of the 70s.

(2x7 on Evocation, adding 2 dice to your Stealth check)

"Cactoc." you mutter, remembering the spell you used earlier. The pressure fills your ears again, and you feel a little heavy. You proceed slowly, and carefully, opening up your magesight.

(No matches on Stealth or Magesight)

... Turns out the Magesight was a terrible plan. The mist, which was mildly obscuring before, becomes very opaque, under the scrutiny of your Mage senses. This makes it a lot harder to move around, even with your sounds muffled, as occasionally you bump into something hidden by the mist, or place you feet wrong. Its not like you tripped over a suit of armor or anything, but you're no Solid Snake.

After turning your Magesight off (Ironically seeing better without it and just relying on your native night vision), you reach the entrance to the section you were in earlier, on the Cyrean war. You think you hear quick, light movement in the room.

You move forward into the exhibit room, hanging low. You catch a glimpse of a person on the far side. They're wearing dark clothing, and carrying something in both arms, a staff, a rifle? You can make out that she is female, and as you stalk closer you can make out more detail. Is that... animal ears, and a tail?

Then one of her canid ears flicks, you here something 'click' faintly, and she turns on a heel and opens fire on full auto with her FUCKING MACHINE GUN. Luckily, she is on the opposite side of the armor display, so those catch most of the spray, as you dive for cover against the weapon displays. She swears in a language you're not familiar with, (Something Germanic, but not quite. Dutch, maybe? Afrikaans?) and starts backing up.

(2x7, 2x10 and 3x2 on Trauma check, no willpower loss)

You catch your breath, getting much more used to automatic fire being pointed in your direction than you should. You press your back up to the case, as she fires again, realizing your bare arms make it real hard for her to not see where you are, even in the dark. Assuming whatever gave her wolf features didn't enhance her senses.

Her fire smacks into the display cases, sending fragments of glass and wood scattering everywhere. The case containing the power modules falls over, and breaks spilling its contents. Including something you didn't see before, tucked under the soft felt cover that the other three rested in. It rolls over and hits your foot.

You pull off you gloves, and reach out for the module. Somebody out there is looking out for you. You grasp it, and the familiar sensation runs up your arm, gathering in your chest this time. The memories flood you, as you understand how to use your new power.

(Barrier Module obtained! With its Interference extra, you may roll the the Barrier pool to reduce the width of any attacks made on you or equal or lower than the height of your Barrier roll)

She's quickly backing up, out the room, and you only have a split second to act before she drops out of sight, and you're going to have to handle this even more cautiously. The weapon displays are broken right open, and within easy reach. You can grab one if you want. There are both melee and projectile weapons.

You reach into the the display case, and unhook the pole arm, bringing it to rest in a ready position in your hands. You shoot a glance over the lip, and you see wolf-girl kick the doors out of the exhibit open behind her, and get ready to retreat into the next room. No or never.

(2x1 on Barrier, no matches on Psibolt to gun. Not that it would destroy the gun, because those are actually kind of hardy in WT, apparently)
(She gets 2x7 and 2x9 on her attack, and can use both because Spray, but HAR 3 in the torso stops it)

You summon your barrier, which descends around you in a kind of purplish mantle, like a covering of glass or plastic. Very Mass Effect. You jump to a crouch, couching the polearm in your off-hand, and get ready to lob a Psibolt.

She was waiting for this moment, and puts a controlled burst downrange. At least two bullets slam into your armor plate, bounding off in a shower of sparks, and shrapnel which abrase you lightly, and send you stumbling a couple paces back. Luckily, Cyrean armor is incredibly tough to penetrate with out special ammunition, or concentrated fire, so you're whole, but she's backing out of the room, into a long, narrow display gallery. You jump back to your feet, standing up full to get a good shot at her, and hurling the bolt at her head with all your accuracy.

Then the door swings shut on the bolt, which knocks it off axis, and means that there is now a smoking half-circle in one of the double doors, and the enemy is unfazed. So much for that plan.

You rush up to the wall by the door, and call Ashwood. "Ashwood," You say into the earbud, trying to be quiet. "Got one, but I don't think she's the mage. For one thing, she's firing a goddamn machine gun." You hear the sound of Ashwood breathing heavy as he turns on his mic. "I heard. I've got him in my sights, moving into the prehistory gallery. Okay, so here are two options you can see. First, if you really insist on getting closer to her, you can pop Option at the door way in Overwatch mode, and then basically rush from cover to cover while it makes regular attacks on her, and hope your barrier and armor takes care any stray shots she makes which connect.

Or, you can do as >>18087263 said, run back and grab the Shard Rifle, and use the hole in the door as a brace, and basically aim through that, using the door as cover. By the time you're there and back, she'll be pretty much limited to suppressing fire, so you should have time enough to aim for more dice, and take the shot you want. This option is safer, but takes longer.

I'd rather charge her. If we miss with the rifle, I'm betting that she'll get away.

Perhaps as a third option, we could use Earth Evocation to trip her? I'm assuming that by this point the other mage is too distracted with Ashwood to cut us off.
But if he's not, that's a gamble too.

(2x7 on Evocation - Earth Block)
(She gets 2x10 on an Agility check to evade)

"Canaz Tetica." You say, and smack your palm into the ground. Maybe 35-40 feet down the gallery you hear the sound of the ground moving, a help like a dog, then a woman's voice which shouts "Stront hoofd!" (At least you think that's what she said) But you're to busy making a run back to the weapons case, and pulling the Shard Rifle out from the shatter glass.

As you tuck your hand onto the grip, it comes alive, several patches light up a friendly blue-green color, which you know means it is active. Inside your vision, a set of symbols appears, which you take to read as the Cyrean digits for 16, which you guess is how many shots have. You run back and couch the rifle in the gap in the doors, and peer down the scope at her. She's broken into a full run for the end of the long gallery, as your Earth Hold apparently didn't slow her much.

    (4 WP spent)
(3x7 on Rifle Roll, she takes three shock and three killing to the torso. She is wearing some kind of armor weave suit, but the Shard Rifle is Pen 4)

You center the scope as best you can on her center of mass, which from behind is the small of the back. You're operating on pure instinct now, following the instructions programmed into you by the modules. You exhale, and take the shot.

A tiny dart, a luminous indigo color, sails through the dark hallway with hardly a sound. Your lack of practical training with guns means you pulled the trigger a little two hard, and the dart of crystal material punctures her right shoulder, sailing through and through with a tiny spray of blood, and probably embedding in the wall in the next room over. She swears and stumbles, then tucks herself behind an objet d'art sitting in a display case in the middle of the gallery, pokes the MG around the corner, and lets loose a burst of suppressing fire, emptying the rest of her beta mag in your direction. A shitload of glass breaks.

(She gets a 2x1 and 2x8 on Supressing Fire, and you actually roll a 1 on the Scatter die, so Dan would take that match, except the Barrier matches that location, so no match)

You instinctively drop down, cradling the shard rifle to your chest as you do. Bullets spray randomly, but she aimed high, so most of them go astray, either hitting around the door, or passing harmlessly through the top half of it. One stray round smacks your leg, but is repulsed in a flash by your Barrier, which dissipates afterward.

(No matches, which means you loose a Willpower due to the WP Bid stipulation on Evocation.)
(Also, she recovers 2 damage from all locations automatically. I'll start with the Killing, so she has 3 S and 1 K to torso)

"Coliniz tlalli!" You make a sweeping gesture with your hand. You feel the earth shift... then do nothing. The spell fizzles, either because you lacked concentration, or maybe because you couldn't visualize it properly. She takes this opportunity to sprint for the door. You take a pot shot, but without time to aim it properly, it smacks into the stone-work above the door, doing nothing by dropping some chips of debris down on her as she shoulder charges the door, reloading her MG. (For pursuing the Virtue of Courage, your relationship with Nerio is automatically added to all your rolls for the rest of this encounter)

You sling the pike and the shard rifle over your shoulders, where they conveniently stick to the back of your Cyrean armor. Then you fucking sprint down the gallery, a full dead run, and smash through the double doors into the lobby. You stand at the top of a flight of stone steps going down into a dip in the lobby center, where ticketing and information is.

You can see her running, still struggling a little, at the bottom of the next stair, which leads up to the "Hall of Heroes and Villains" display you were at earlier, then into the greater Metahuman exhibit. Despite the mist, you can see her pretty clearly now, with the light of the street spilling in adding color to your vision. Her hair is cut short, grey colored, and she does, in fact, have wolf ears and a tail, of the same color. You can also see she has an SMG strapped to her back, and a pistol with a silencer attached at her hip. Her black ninja-catsuit has a bit of an iridescent sheen to it, but you can clearly see the dark stain of blood from where to shot her last.

We could go the Deus Ex route and get prosthetic arms, that would probably be the easiest and see the most return, but would also be the most expensive. Unless we're talking military grade prostheses, in which case it would suddenly get much harder.

We could try to get in contact with Dr. Moreau again, and see if she'd be willing to muck around in our genetic code again. I suppose we could also try to find another geneticist to do this. The new arms would be just as good as our current arms, and I would imagine we'd have better control of them from the get go as well.

We could look into getting a superior graft, though this raises all kinds of questions. Like where do we get better arms? And how do we convince someone else to stick them onto us without raising all kinds of alarms?

Using parkour seems like a good idea, but busting through the door probably made too much noise. Unless we can buff our barrier a bit more, it'd probably be better to dump more WP into the shot (then again, since we are getting bonii here, if we can buff the barrier a bit and engage at close quarters, avoiding her gunfire which WILL be on us, CC could work).

    (3x9 on Agility Test)

It. Is. Fucking. GO TIME. You draw the pike from your back with a single flourish, shift your weight forward, and hop up onto the railing of the steps, sliding down in just your shoes, keeping your balance perfectly due to your fresh parkour-training. She pivots, trying to bring the gun up on you to fire.

(2x4 and 2x7 on your Melee attack)
(She rolls 2x2 and 2x6 on her gun attack, which both your sets beat, so her sets are ruined, and she takes 3 killing to torso)

You take a flying leap, as she starts firing, and thrust forward with the polearm. It is very Wuxia. She tries to bring the machine gun around, but the blade slips inside her guard, and into her torso, driving her back a couple paces. She coughs up some blood, which spatters your arms, chest and neck.

Then she snarls at you like a wild animal, bearing some very pointy teeth.

I probably (actually not probably, would) have done another sub-list, like I did for the Gene Splicing. Telepathic command & control could have been one of the options, along with other powers, like spitting acid or self-igniting substances, or bioweave skin armor. Or hey, you could have got self-ejecting bone-spikes like Ms. Africa did.

(2x4 and 3x3 on Stability, so she looses the opposed test, so she'll loose some dice on what she does next. Also, her regen will take care of the two shock left over from the bullet wound, since the 3K you did was caused by an object still up in dem guts)

You decide to utilize the Peter Parker school of fighting villains, and mock her. "A puppy. How appropriate since you're such a huge bitch." She swears at you in Dutch again (You're pretty sure its dutch) and tries to bring her gun around again. However, both arms and the gun are trapped on the wrong side of your body and spear. You summon a psibolt into your off hand, still keeping the spear couched and braced in your other. You clench your fist around the bolt, and suddenly you feel it envelop your hand, shrouding it in an aura of blue energy. "Sit!" You say, and cold-cock her right in the fucking nose. She yelps, and falls over limp, sliding off the end of your spear. The gun clatters to the floor. She's sitting on her ass, one hand clamped over her broken nose, the other holding her sucking chest wound. Which is getting less sucking by the second.

"Stay." You follow up on your one-liner, threateningly pointing the ghostpike at her. You have got to get you one of these. "Fuck." She says, he words heavily garbled by the nose bleed, and her own atrocious accent. She is not a strong English speaker on a good day. "I yield." You think she says. "Goddamn vigilantes..." She mutters, low, but not low enough you can't hear. She actually looks pretty pale, and you wonder how quick the blood loss recoups.

You look her over, realizing now some interesting things about her. She's in her mid-twenties, you'd guess, she's also taller than you, and from what you can tell from the very tight 'cat'-suit, her muscles are even better defined than yours. Her nails are longer and darker than normal, and look thicker. Her eyes are golden, and the irises unsually large. And on a not supernormal scale, you'd guess she's mixed race. She's also wearing some kind of black metal amulet, in the shape of a deer skull. Wonder what's up with that. She takes a couple seconds to unclip her gun-belts, letting those fall to the floor, then resumes holding her wounds and panting heavily. You use your foot to kick them away a bit.

I need you to bust in from the other side, so we can catch him by surprise." You nod into the air. "On my way." You check the wolf-chick again, and notice some zip-ties hanging off a hook on her left side. "Yoink." You say, as you grab a pair, and put them on her wrists, with nothing more than a glare. You stand back up, and start walking toward the exhibit at a quick pace. "Remember what I said!" You call over your shoulder. "Whatever, motherfucker." It doesn't even look anything like him... You must not have grown up around many black people. People tend to have a hard time differentiating faces among people of ethnicities with which they're unfamiliar. It's not racism, it's a natural but regrettable function of the human brain.

You stalk into the "Hall of Heroes and Villains" gallery, where the 11 Heroes and Villains lie arranged in bold formation. In the darkness, with the cloying mist along the floor, it is much more ominous, dramatic, than when you were here only an hour or more ago.

You move up to the door into the exhibit proper, and listen to it. You think you can here someone muttering on the other side. Looks like its go time.

    (2x5 and 2x10 on Perception)

You press your ear to the door, and listen good and hard. At first, you hear something that is definitely quiet swearing, this time in proper German, not just something Germanic. Then the voice shifts to something rythmic, steady. Your spooky sense tingles, and you get the idea he's doing a long form incantation. Which he could be doing to ward the room.

    Which would suck.

Honestly, I was picturing Dan's dad as a black Indiana Jones, so I'm going to say his mother is Asian. Plus, Fortesque is a name likely inherited by an ancestor from a slave owner. It's a lot less probable for an Asian man to have a French surname than a black man.
