You are a P-61 pilot of the 501st Joint Wing, and you've just landed your twin-engined land-fighter on the USS Saratoga, then been informed that the Martians are invading England.

    WHELP.

"Wait, wait, wait," Ian is saying, patting the air in a slow-down motion. "What?"

"The Martians," the Saratoga's XO says slowly, "are invading England."

"There's no way they could get past the Royal Navy," you say immediately.

    "No way," Ian says.

    "No way," repeats Sean.

The XO stares at all three of you. "Submarines."

    Oh.

Right. Yeah. They kind of have those, don't they? Like the one you almost got corked in, that delivered way too many Martians onto Castle Barin's island (Isle of Barin? Barry's Isle? Pile-Of-Rocks-In-A-Circle-Holy-Shit Island? Whatever, you can never keep the names of those fucking Channel Islands straight.)

"So how are we going to get back to the 501st?" Sean says, asking a useful question to push past the shock.

The XO shrugs. "After they push your fighter over the side, I really don't know. Either of you guys know how to fly a Wildcat?"

    -What's the wind strength
-How much ammo, spare kit, and other weight can we dump out of the Widow

Takeoff distance can be reduced by using WAR EMERGENCY POWER and some fiddling with the flaps.

If Doolittle can get B-25's off a carrier, we sure as hell can take a P-61 off one.

Also, the navy considered making the P-61 carrier capable. We should prove that they should of done it.

Won't do us much good to get there without our plane. Navy birds just won't cut it.

Besides, P-61s were supposed to be carrier-capable, eventually. We can take off, they just have to fix the dang fuel leak and give us some .50 (and 20mm, if they even have any--do they carry 20mm AAA in this universe?).

Alternatively, he was told *specifically* how to best troll us as revenge for landing on his flight deck.

Doing research for the guy who said you could launch B-17's/Ju-88's off of a certain Japanese carrier (which while the carrier was wide enough it needed to be 3 times as long), I found that B-17 pilots could reduce their takeoff distance by "using 1/3 flaps and full war emergency power: full throttle and 2,760 RPM." This shaved off about 1,300 ft. of takeoff distance (4,190 normal).

Capt Mainwaring! When we was in the Sudan, one day, there was this sandstorm and it was so thick, you see, you couldn't see ten feet in front of you, and some of the naval lads who was with us said it was as thick as pease soup, because he was from London, so he was. And Kitchener, what he did was to make us march through the sandstorm so when the Fuzzy Wuzzys popped up on the other side, we was behind them, coming right at 'em.

Thus the expression: we come in pease!

    "Da fuq is this?"

You all turn to see a weary-looking, short, squinty-eyed, broad-faced man stagger into the briefing room. He's pulling a leather flight helmet off his head, and his forehead glistens with the nervous, chilly sweat of combat. He spots the XO, and thrusts an unlit cigar at him. "And who parked the turkey on the deck?"

    "The hell you say, chum!"

He turns tired eyes to you. "Who is this shit-scarfing turdburger and what's he doing in my briefing room?"

"Relaxing after doing what you do every day in a plane that isn't designed for it," you snap back. "I didn't know Marines needed somebody to talk them onto the deck, but I guess you can't look for your ass with both hands when you need one for the stick-"

"NO!" the XO screams, recoiling from you both. "NO! NOT TWO! NOT TWO! I CAN'T HANDLE TWO OF YOU ASSHOLES! NO! NO! NOOOOOOOPE!" he screams, fleeing the the briefing room at a dead run, clipboard and papers flying everywhere.

    >For extraordinary heroism above and beyond the call of duty as Commanding Officer of Marine Fighting Squadron TWO FOURTEEN in action against enemy Japanese forces in Central Solomons Area from September 12, 1943 to January 3, 1944. Consistently outnumbered throughout successive hazardous flights over heavily defended hostile territory, Major Boyington struck at the enemy with daring and courageous persistence, leading his squadron into combat with devastating results to Japanese shipping, shore installations and aerial forces. Resolute in his efforts to inflict crippling damage on the enemy, Major Boyington led a formation of twenty-four fighters over Kahili on October 17, and, persistently circling the airdrome where sixty hostile aircraft were grounded, boldly challenged the Japanese to send up planes. Under his brilliant command, our fighters shot down twenty enemy craft in the ensuing action without the loss of a single ship. A superb airman and determined fighter against overwhelming odds, Major Boyington personally destroyed 26 of the many Japanese planes shot down by his squadron and by his forceful leadership developed the combat readiness in his command which was a distinctive factor in the Allied aerial achievements in this vitally strategic area.

He looks at you, then down at the newspaper in your hand. "Oh, right. You're the Witchfucker."

    what

"Witchfucker," he repeats. "Bounce some distracted Martians, crash-land on Pussy Island, suck up the medals. While we're stuck on these tin cans with nothing but ugly mess cooks to look at." He snorts. "Yeah, real hero."

"And you're clearly leading from the front," you say, dangerous-quiet. "Where's your squadron, chum?"

The man lunges for you snake-quick, but you both duck, ears ringing, as a gunshot rings out. The SPANG SPANG! of a ricochet sends you both diving under the chairs.

"WHO FUCKING DID THAT!?" you shout.

    "WHAT?" the other man shouts.

    "WHO-"

"I CAN'T HEAR YOU," the short pilot yells.

Your ears still ringing, you look up to see Ian holding his revolver.

    He's got the Look.

You and the Marine both try to scream at Ian at the same time about the horrid, horrid stupidity of discharging a firearm, inside a steel room no less, and about the ten million court-martials he deserves, but he simply taps the barrel of his M1917 against his leg, and you both shut up. Ian's radiating that cold, intense vibe he gets when he's Not Fucking Around.

"I know you guys are pilots and all," he says quietly, "but we don't have time for this bullshit right now."

He glares at you, then at the Marine.

    "Now, what do you say?"

"... don't shoot?" you ponder, ears still ringing. Ian flexes his hand, like he's thinking of shooting you on matters of general principle.

    "I'm sorry?" the Marine ventures.

"I'm sorry!" you chime in eagerly. "Totally. Sorry."

"Say it to each other," Ian instructs you.

The Marine tilts his head to one side, like he's examining a new kind of beetle he's never seen before. You simply stare at Ian.

    Your gunner sighs. "Baby steps."

F4F loaded weight is 7,000 lbs and she was pretty fat for a naval fighter at the time

The B-25 had successful carrier launches though I'm not sure how much weight they had to get them down to, I doubt it was less than our loaded widow, especially on maybe half tanks.

Carrier launch should be possible, especially given our souped up engines.

With the merge settled, you and the Marine get to business. "Pappy Boyington, VF-121," he says by way of introduction. You introduce yourself and Ian in turn, and sit down, stiff and weary after the adrenaline rush of - well, of landing.

"What's the story with the ships?" you ask.

Boyington shrugs. "Hell if I know. I was flying a two-ship BARCAP when we got the first distress call. My and my wingman mixed it up and landed with fumes right after they launched the first real strike."

"One was definitely the Richelieu," Ian says. "The other looks like a Deutchla-"

"Graf Spee," Boyington confirms. "The freighters are actually their assigned resupply ships."

"The Spee was weeks overdue to report from South America, though," you say.

Boyington nods. "And Richelieu was supposed to be in the Indian Ocean - two weeks ago, even. You tell me. They came under air attack as they passed Gibraltar and they started calling for air cover when they got within a hundred miles of Portugal's coast. They're running for harbor in England, I guess."

Ian leans forward, his face cold and flat.

    "England?"

"That's literally twenty minutes old," Pappy tells you. He sighs, wiping at his face. "I don't know what to tell you. Nobody knows what the fuck is going on. Just scrambled radio reports of Martians coming out of the sea, swarming over the beaches."

You feel dizzy as the spacy, floaty feeling of unreality grips you. This can't be happening. It just can't, right? The Martians have launched weekly attacks against England like clockwork; the war had been so... static. Paced.

    This can't be happening.

    "... where's Sean?" Ian asks.

You scramble up a few ladders onto the flight deck to find Sean standing under the nose of your lashed-down Black Widow. He's gripping a cigarette in his mouth, tapping his foot idly, with that damn broadsword casually laid over one shoulder. Facing him is a huge sumbitch dressed in stained white clothes, slinging the biggest fucking wrench you've ever seen over his own shoulder. Behind him stand a squad of men with itchy palms looking at your plane.

"I think they'll be all right for a while," Pappy says thoughtfully, eyeing Sean's sword. "So just what were you Army pukes planning on doing?"

    I really am torn.

Those are three really fucking viable WAT DO's. Of the three, I'm thinking FUCK THIS FIGHT, BACK TO ENGLAND at the very least.

    So either signals or INVASION.

-signals: We are literally the only asset available to take care of this, and we still don't know what they intend to do with them. Strategic enemy asset.

-Invasion: Seems like a land fight. Good for Witches, bad for Widow.

-Sea battle here: We got lucky because we had a loadout that was completely unexpected. Otherwise, one widow won't do shit to change the outcome. However, potential major strategic assets on our side at risk.

I vote signals on this one. Most bang for our single widow's buck.

Good time for a rescue attempt perhaps, the martians would be pretty occupied with the invasion and probably wouldn't expect it.

Can I point out that we already relayed the beam transmission info back to Barin Castle?

Sure we can tell the Navy about it too, but they're not in a position to be shelling the transmitters on the Continent, or sending flights against them since they're going to be occupied with the invasion.

We can use the ship's radio to contact Minna and ask if they need us back with them, or if we should go and figure out what the Martians are targeting north of London.

We already Morse Coded the beam coordinates in to Barin before we flew way down south to answer the all-hands Mayday from the cruisers. They *should* have the intel already, and Minna may be screaming for us to come home specifically because she's already got a mission planned out to deal with it, and it depends on our radar.

You stand in the sea wind, thinking furiously. Your instincts are screaming that the smoldering wreckage of that military hospital near London is the key to everything, but your unit - and your friends - desperately need you.

You finally resolve your dilemia with the First Technique of all successful officers - you pass the buck.

"This just became Minna's problem," you grump. "I'll let Miss StrategyPants figure out what to do."

Pappy shrugs, apparently familiar with the technique. "Okay," he says, "but how are you getting back there?"

You eye your shot-up Widow, and sigh. "If we could slap some patches on that bitch, she'd probably get off the deck okay."

Pappy eyes the huge fighter. "Probably?"

"You should've seen me land her," you say. "Those spoilerons, man - and she's got more power then the stock model."

    "Spoilerons?" Pappy says, looking skeptical.

"Zap flaps. Mated with the standard controls, they work in-tandem."

He grunts. "Suppose. You could take a spotter plane from one of the escort ships, you could fit your whole crew in that. Smarter then flying a hundred miles in a shot-up prototype, if you ask me."

    "Don't they need them?"

"They've got Witches for that, remember?"

You grunt concession. "Don't suppose you've got a fighter to spare?"

"It'll only seat two, and that's if you yank the radio out," Pappy points out. "Besides, the torque on those little barrels is nasty. A ferry flight, sure, but if you want to fight in one..."

    >Wat do?

I think that we should try patching the Widow at minimum specs and fly it out. At worst, we can just take a spotter if we drink the Widow. The Widow has everything we need to complete a strategic mission like getting Chris back; we should try to use it.

Fallback would be the Seafox, which would mean having to go to EastChurch to steal a *real* plane, and we may not have that much time.

If Minna needed a spotter plane or a transport, though, she could probably get one from Luke or somebody; they'd listen, if she hinted at evidence of whatever is going on. She wanted us, specifically, and that includes our plane.

"As amusing as it'd be to see Ian spin a Buffalo around the prop shaft instead of the other way around," you say, "I wasn't kidding when I said that Widow is damn important. And if we leave it on deck, it'll just be in the way." The XO had a point about risking pilots lives by leaving the Widow on the deck, but you won't admit that, so you pretend it's completely about the risk of sailors pushing it overboard. In your heart, though, you know it's only 95% about that.

Well, perhaps 98%. But for a second, you cared about Marines, and you think that's pretty big of you, all things considered.

"Just patch that bitch up," you say. "Don't bother with the holes in the tank, just check the lines. The other tanks are still intact, just fill those and we'll redistribute ballast a bit."

    "And weight?"

"We emptied our bowels when we went after that friggin dreadnaught and I shot off most of our ammo," you reply. "And I only need enough juice to make England, so we'll fly light."

Say what you will about Marines, but their engineers know their shit. In under thirty minutes what minor repairs can be done have been done, and your Widow is set on the end of the deck, chocks in place, waiting for take-off roll.

Launch with ourselves and Ian, with Sean in a accompanying fighter... And rope the marine in too.

We've got our own flight, and we can dump as much off the widow as necessary if we go up with two bodies. The widow can slave the turret to the radio positon too if I'm not mistaken.

The Saratoga has an 888 foot flightdeck. With the old engines. a P-61 can take off from a 1000 foot runway. With our souped-up engines, a strong enough headwind, and a clear flightdeck, there should be no problem with us taking our bird. ESPECIALLY with the reduced fuel load necessitated by the screwed up fuel tank.

"Fuck no," Sean exclaims into the intercom. "Sword only weighs like two pounds. What difference can that make?"

You stare at the distressingly scant length of deck ahead of you. "Um."

True, Doolittle did get medium bombers - with a payload, no less - off the deck of a carrier. And here you are with a heavy *fighter,* with out even a combat load.

Yeah. Yeah, that makes it sound almost routine, doesn't it?

You strike your magneto switches and the powerplants cough smoke as they turn over, the initial whine settling into a throaty roar as they warm up. You engage War Emergency Power and the frame of the Widow trembles with the incredible strength of Double-Wasp radials fed with water-injection. You give them a minute for the water injection to take full effect, then, with your sphincter gripping the seat cover for dear life, signal the Navy boys to yank the chocks.

Ghostrider THUNDERS down the deck of the Saratoga, engines howling all-out, flaps at full extension, and the Widow falls neatly off the back of the Saratoga and into the water. Your body braces against the cockpit to brace against the impact as you involuntarily suck in a huge lungful of oxygen to survive on till you smash the canopy out and you bite your tongue to keep your last words from being a sissy bitch scream and the fucking plane keeps flying.

    And flying.

    And flying.

The radar altimeter happily indicates altitude. You don't want to see how much, you're just happy there's altitude to indic-

    - oh, thirty feet, okay, that's JESUS FUCK THAT IS LOW SWEET CHRIST-

"-ude, hey, hello, earth to flyboy, you're breathing kind of funny, why don't you just chill out-"

"HEY!" you wheeze into the intercom. "HEY SMEEEEE?"

    "....."

    "NO SPLASH! HA! HA! HAHAHAHAHAAHAHA!"

The Widow just... floats in the air, slowly grabbing feet of altitude for a minute, then it edges out of the critical zone and begins climbing in earnest.

Don't forget that that since we've started to melt Minna's icy soul, that incident with that midshipman's love letter might play out differently.

And honestly, any cadet that has the balls to give a love letter to a witch in person is good enough for her.

In the first season, a Japanese (Fusonese) midshipman tried to give Yoshika a love letter, but the wind blew it away. They chased it down, but right before they could catch it, Minna grabbed it, and pulled rank to chase the midshipman away.

For her part, Yoshika looked thrilled to be getting a love letter.

So, what you're saying is that we should set it up so that it blows somewhere that we aren't? Because if we got them to expect that, then it could be a valid distraction/misdirection...

Also, we're going to get where we're going, finish our bit and land at the castle; then the Widow is going to nearly fall apart at the seams.

"You took off from a carrier?" Sean guesses.

"Ah. Ah. Hahaha. Ahahahahahahahaha," you begin giggling madly, your voice cracking. "HAHAHAHA AHA HA AHA YEAH I- I- AHAHAHAHAHAHAA-"

"You are starting to seriously harsh my mellow," Sean says in a strained voice. "Just - just - " There's a click as he disconnects your intercom. Hell, you didn't even know he could.

"Good fighter good Widow good girl," you croon, patting your dash panel. "Good plane doesn't let daddy go for a swim, does it?" You take a deep breath to steady your nerves and just end up breaking into giggles again.

It's been one of those days.

    >Twenty minutes later:

"In the EVENT the airplane floats," you say, reading aloud from the P-61s manual, section on "ditching." "In the EVENT the airplane floats," you repeat, marveling. "Not very encouraging, but hey, they're honest!"

You look up, and see that the coast is in sight. And the sky above it is thick with flak and fighters.

Landing on a nice, safe stable field, bah. land on a small target, moving, tossing, ocean unstable, that adjusts and has no lights on to avoid submarine and small boat attacks, without crashing. And they did this without knowing how to fly a multi engine aircraft.

You take one look at the epic, swirling battle taking place as the brits Fight Them On the Beaches, and reach deep into your soul for the resolve to do what must be done.

"... nope," you whisper in a sad little voice, and turn your Widow to fly a wide, looping course AROUND the battle raging over the southern coast of England.

Of course, Mr. Murphy won't be denied. As you're going feet-dry, a pair of Firebees spots you and make a steep diving pass on you. You turn hard into the attack, throwing a side-slip into it as well, and they miss.

"They're coming over the top," Ian says, squinting up into the sun.

"God dammit, do these fuckers ever know when to quit?" you gripe.

"Nope," Ian says casually, bringing the top turret to bear.

The firebees come screaming in again, and you make an even more violent defensive maneuver this time. There's a bright flash in your peripheral vision, and when you roll out of the break-turn, you only see one Firebee left, diving for distance.

    "Nice shooting, Ian," you say.

"That' was all Kathy," he replies. "I couldn't hit shit. It's a flight yoke, not your pecker, don't yank on it," he says, sounding rather pissed.

    "Wait. Kathy who?"

Err, the gun camera only runs when the gun is being fired, right? Not the whole mission, that would be a waste of valuable film in the WWII era (it wasn't until magnetic tape that entire missions were regularly recorded).

So, we almost certainly have zero pictures of girls on our gun camera. We should, however, have several clips of our glorious Hispanos demolishing things, including the alium battleship.

Ian's gnomish gunnery, alas, would not be so immortalized.

Then we get a special calender (Probably at the same time we get the special "Airmen of Castle Barin" calender made for the witches...) made just for Chuck, and every month is a different frame from the guncam footage.

And it looks like it may soon be time for landing, as if we're too visible aliums will just shoot the already visibly damaged Widow. We'll need some more quick repairs, and gnome'ing it for more than we absolutely need to will probably only make the repairs worse. And we need repairs and ammo before we can fight here or leave for elsewhere in the Widow.

I can see it now. We land our plane without the use of pesky landing gear, skid to a halt halfway down the runway and kick the door open.

The emerging reinforcements are a man who may or may not be hallucinating with the power to make guns jam and engines misfire, a surly American with a Claymore and Ian, the man who could shoot an asprin out of orbit with a revolver.

    Think that'll be enough?

Perhaps it was the mad, mad laughter that cracked your voice after you narrowly survived your carrier take-off. Perhaps it was that moment of crushing clarity when you realized that despite all your talk of your Widow's low stall speed and extra power, carrier take-offs are also a matter of ground acceleration and autorotation speeds. For a moment you realized you might possibly have been slightly wrong, and that moment is death incarnate to a pilots ego (the important thing.) Or perhaps the assume that no man can fly piston-engines fighter planes in combined-arms ops with LITTLE MAGICAL GIRLS WEARING FUCKING UNDERWEAR AND PLANE-LEGS for any length of time before going stark raving fucking mad from the rape of logic.

Whatever the reason, there's a crack in the bulwark of disbelief, and if there's one thing any pilot does well, it's J-J-JAM IT IN.

"There is no Witch," you say calmly, throttling back the left engine and adjusting the trim as best you can. "You know the Navy can't shoot that good on the best of days, much less in battle."

"I'm right here, you nut!" Katherine shouts. She flies a little closer, scowling. "Your radio is on, I know you hear me!"

"Uh.... okay, whatever you say," Ian says with a pacifying voice. "Just, uh..."

"Adjust the trim, yeah," you say. "I'm doing it." About thirty seconds later, you shut down #1 and feather the prop. "It's too badly fucked. It's more drag then thrust at this point."

"It's not that bad," Katherine says, flying over you and settling on your left wing, scowling at the engine. "I bet I could fix it up on the wing. I've even got a wrench!" She produces said tool from her belt and swings it violently through the air to demonstrate her prowess.

    "Uh..." Ian says uncertainly.

"Please don't do that," Sean says, voice strained.

"Okay, okay, fine," you mutter. "I'll fly gentle for the wussies."

"No, Kathy. Kathy!" Sean shouts as the Witch edges over your wing and closes on the left powerplant nacelle. She sticks her tongue between her lips, a look of intense concentration on her face as she winds up with the wrench. "KATHY, DON'T!"

"There IS no Kathy, you loon," you say calmly as Kathy connects with the nacelle, a loud WHANG! audible from the cockpit. "She's just my mind's way of representing my natural talent with machines. We should encourage that. GO KATHY! GO!"

You dip the left wing a little as Kathy winds up for another big swing. No need to take risks.

"Don't let her hit it again!" Sean shouts. "It could start a fire or some shit!"

"There is NO Witch," you say, annoyed. "Totally. No Witch. Hallucination!"

"I'M NOT A HALLUCINATION!" Kathy screams. "I. AM. A. REAL. WITCH!"

"Oh yeah?" you say, suspicious. "That sounds just like something a HALLUCINATION would say!"

    "I'm here! I exist!"

"Fine," you say primly. "Prove it. Do something I'd notice, physically. Go sit on the right wingtip."

Katherine does so, doing a fancy little roll over the top as she switches sides and comes down on your right. Putting away her wrench, she settles her cute little ass on the Widow's right wingtip. "There, feel that?"

    You snort. "Nope."

"She's real, man," Sean says, his voice thin. "She's right there."

"Nope. Don't feel a thing." The drag of a Witch sitting on your right wingtip is counteracting the drag of the dead engine on the left, but they don't need to know that.

"I was just fucking with you, okay? There's a Witch! Right there! RIGHT THERE!"

"Sean," you say, sounding sad, "alcohol isn't always the answer."

"THERE'S A WITCH ON THE WING! GOD DAMN YOU, LOOK!"

"Impossible," you snort. "How can anybody SIT on a wing in a three-hundred mile-per-hour slipstream?"

Oh well, it won't kill us unless we try right?

It's the landing on water that's the problem. It's the subsequent, "In the event that the plane floats..." that you need to worry about.
    >> Anonymous 02/28/12(Tue)22:40 No.18142952
Upon landing, we act completely normal, mention everything that happened in perfect detail but with the implication that your crew is breaking up due to combat stress

I wonder if anyone else remembers that we're about to emergency land our plane, not being able to contribute in a useful manner to the Battle of Britain.

Yeah, I'm honestly a little disappointed that we're contributing so little, but planefag wouldn't punish us because he decided to have us troll instead.

Can't we nurse her back to a field or something? Doesn't even have to be Castle Barin. I'm pretty sure ditching her the water is pretty much the end of her operational life.

And she's our Baby. We can't do that to her.

    I SEE WHAT'S HAPPENING.

PLANEFAG JUST WANTS US TO BE WITH MINNA, AND SINCE MINNA'S BIGGEST COMPETITION IS WITH PLANE-CHAN, HE MUST TAKE PLANE-CHAN OUT OF THE PICTURE.

I'M ON TO YOU, PLANEFAG, FORCING MINNA DOWN OUR THROATS EVEN THOUGH WE KNOW OUR ONE TRUE LOVE IS PLANE-CHAN!
