263 KB STRIKE WITCHES: LEEEEEROOOY JEEEENKINS planefag !!0ZviLFh59My 03/01/12(Thu)23:23 No.18169277
    Minna hangs up the phone.

    "We're ready," she says.

The strike team will consist of you, Minna, Katherine O'Hare, Bader (who's been drinking slowly and observing the entire madness-in-progress from a corner,) Chuck, and Trude, who can hardly be denied her personal stake in the matter. Sakamoto will keep the rest of the 501st on-call, as they're supposed to be - a dereliction of duty by an entire unit of Witches can't be ignored, but a single flight getting lost is just barely plausible.

"How are you feeling?" Sean asks you. He and Ian both look strained, but you all know that the pilot takes the brunt of the load in combat flying, and you've done quite a bit of that recently. And the Black Widow doesn't have provision for a co-pilot, either.

"Strangely... okay," you admit. "Guess I'm just running on caffeine and alcohol right now. Let's hope it lasts."

Your flight gasses up and tears out of RAF Hornchurch at top speed, with Bader opting to sling some of those new pressed-paper drop-tanks on his Spitfire to increase her rather short legs. Your own A-20's bomb-bay is occupied by four 20-mm Hispano cannon, but she has provision for rocket-rails and the wing-mounted hard points are still available, though you won't be needing drop-tanks for this sortie.

    >Rockets? Rocket-rails are a small, but sortie-long decrease in performance!
    >--HE, Anti-Tank, or Smoke?
    >Bombs? One-shot, performance degrading, one-shot, but ditch-able and powerful!
    >--What kind? AP, standard HE, Cluster, Fuel-Air-Explosive?

The emitters will be ground targets, but it's going to be heavily defended so we'll be making a bombing run and get out of there. Also, emitters tend to be fragile pieces of equipment.

My vote is for Rockets. AT on right wing, HE on left.

Think about it guys. We fly a plane. The only thing we can contribute to this operation is close air support, radar triangulation and HAMMERTIME if a flying dread appears.

Bombs are next to useless in this situation. What could we possibly be targeting on the ground in the middle of LONDON? Also I think it was mentioned that the Havoc has a MUCH better fuel capacity than the Widow. So while drop tanks are useful, they are not as useful as ROKKITS.

Actually, it's your best bet against tanks in WWII. Think Molotov cocktail x1000. An HE bomb needs a DIRECT hit (good luck with that) and cluster bombs that can into anti-armor weren't around then (like the Rockeye-II.)

Not so good against Battleships, though. But you'll be over land. There are no battleships on land.

See, on one hand, I can see the utility of smoke rockets. On the other hand, we really need to keep some AP capability around because while I fully trust in the girls' ability to deal with soft targets, if something big and thicky-plated shows up, we're going to need a bit more than your garden-variety dakka to deal with it.

That said, trying to land an AP bomb directly on target is...well, unless you're in a mood to play Stuka with something that has proper dive brakes, that's going to be a bit on the tricky side. So that means AP rockets, despite their issues, are really our best bet for that kind of work.

    Obviously, the solution is FAE.

RAF Hornchurch, A.K.A. Sutton Farm, is a fucking mess. As you roll up to the ramp, a flight of Blenheims are lifting off ahead of you, struggling into the air with four 500-pound bombs apiece. Circling Hurricanes wait patiently for their overloaded charges to lumber airborne and head for the nearby front.

"I wouldn't want to be those poor bastards," Ian remarks, and you grunt agreement. The Blenhiem is well past her useful prime in this war, but it has wings, so they keep flying them.

The tower gives you clearance for take-off roll, and you floor the throttle, accelerating your A-20G (or P-70, if you care,) down the runway. Even with full flaps the A-20 takes more room to get aloft, especially with the Fuel-Air Bombs riding the hardpoints and the AP rocket rails under the outer wings, but you've got cavernous fuel tanks and barely twenty miles to go so you let the Wright-Cyclone powerplants run extra-rich, 110% power. You form up with your Witches, Bader settling on your left wing. Chuck socks in on your right, and you note he's brought two 500-pound bombs to party with. So far, so good.

"A-20 on point," Minna instructs, and Sean applies himself to the radar set, guiding you down the Martian's own beam. The radio is alive with the cries of fighting and dying pilots scarce forty miles distant, and you bite back your frustration at flying over unmolested territory while England's Darkest Hour is coming alive all around you.

You'd better not be wrong about all this.

Yes. Bombs have to be shackled to something strong enough to carry hundreds of pounds of bombs, there's only so many places on a plane strong enough for that. Rocket rails, however, are easier, because rockets are not as heavy. You still need some shackles to hook the rails to, though.

"We're here," Sean announces at long last.

"A field," Ian observes. "God bless your unerring skill and magnificent talent, Sean."

"Don't make me come up there."

"Ghostrider!" Minna calls. "Are you sure this is the spot?"

"Sean's the best there is, gal," you assure her. "This is the spot."

The "spot" is a bare patch of heathland with a few bored cows munching on the grass here and there, not much impressed by the buzzing engines overhead. A half-mile distant is the smouldering ruins of what used to be the military hospital Chris once stayed in.

"I'll shake the bushes," Chuck says, and off he goes with one helluva roar, thundering low over the open fields and hedges, his prop-wash shaking the ancient hedgerows and terrifying cows and sheep into panicked, blind flight.

He pulls up from his pass, and the heath continues to look like a heath.

Over five hours, Dmitry’s crew is killed one-by-one by spalling or partial penetrations. Dmitry himself dies of radiation sickness and burns shortly after his position is relieved by the 3rd Panzer. "Are we really calling this tub Ghostrider?" Sean gripes.

"What? What's wrong with that?" you ask.

"It's not painted black? Besides, our Widow is Ghostrider. We need a new name. This isn't a ghost. It's, like, a hammer. Heavier. More killy killy boom-boom."

"Killy-killy boom boom," Ian echos sardonically. "Yes, a stunningly relevant semantic point."

"Anyways, we need a new callsign," Sean grumps. "Something badass and German-sounding. Oh, I know! Hexenhammer! Drei Hexenhammer!"

"The hammer of the Witches?" Ian says. "Like, *their* hammer, or one who *hammers* witches?"

"Yes," Sean replies with gusto. Ian groans.

You squint into the distance. Something is approaching fast from the North. Something... big.

"Jesus, you see that at four o'clock?" Minna says. "It's huge."

As you stare, dumbfounded, at the fucking GREAT LAKES ORE FREIGHTER flying towards you, still miles distant, you notice afternoon sunlight glinting off dark steel bodies trailing thick white contrails.

"Rocket-bombs!" Chuck cries, and sure enough, they are. They rapidly overtake the... thing and arc towards the open fields below you. You see Minna dive after one, but she pulls up rapidly when they explode while still airborne. Voluminous black smoke begins to roil out, swirling in an an unearthly , viscous fashion - the tell-tale sign of the dreaded Black Smoke.

"PULL UP! PULL UP!" Katherine screams, and everybody obeys, climbing away from the poisonous shit. You're all high enough to avoid it, but the stuff is terrifying beyond words. Sinking through the air with more weight then it seems it should have, it blankets the earth... the unpeopled, rural earth.

You glance down, then at the scraggly edges of the London suburbs, not a half-mile distant.

"What the hell are they playing at?" you marvel.

"That freighter is accelerating," Chuck says.

"How the bloody hell did they make it fly?"

"How did the Greeks make spinach taste good?" Sean asks.

    "Bloody wanker."

    "What? Ask a stupid question..."

Do we see any obvious asymmetry on this abomination? Those are usually very good targets. Also, we have radar we can distract them with, correct? I vote we blast that in their face and see what their reaction is. If nothing else, we will have their full attention giving Chuck time to drop the big ass bombs on the anachronism freighter while the witches cover us and look for any openings to attack. "I don't know how to shoot it down, but I know what's inside it," you say.

    "What?" Bader asks.

"Aliums," you reply. "Lots and lots of fucking aliums."

"And this helps us how!?" Minna demands.

"Open can. SHOOT ALIUMS," you reply, and engage WEP. The Wright-Cyclones scream with power and your A-20G thunders forward, responding eagerly with the new power. Minna falls in alongside Chuck, and you notice Bader pairing off with Trude. Katherine falls in on your wing.

"Don't worry, Ghostrider!" Katherine calls out. "We'll show that alien hunk-of-junk who's boss!"

"Ayup," you say, and as you speak, the next wave of incoming rocket-bombs begin shedding FireBees into the air around you. Naturally.

"I HATE BEES," you scream with gusto. Sleds are bastards, fighters are a good, honest challenge, but bees are just fucking infuriating. Stingy enough to be dangerous, too slippery to be a satisfying target, just - just -

"I HATE BEES," you re-iterate, and as you speak a few swing onto your tail.

"COVER ME!" you cry, and O'Hare does something you've never seen before - she flips over, flying on her back, and bends in the middle to face behind her, swinging that massive M-2 Ma Deuce to bear. The heavy machine gun begins barking about the same time Ian's twin-thirties do.

"Scattering! Ah ha! Take that, you slippery little fucks!" Ian cries out. A second later, you hear Sean's ventral guns barking.

You see Minna and Chuck leap ahead, putting the speed of their machines to good use, and as you watch several flashes of flame spout from the huge freighter's forecastle. The contrails of spiral-rockets corkscrew towards Chuck and Minna, whom break left and right with practiced ease -

"-ARGH!" Minna cries as she's engulfed in explosions.

    What in the how-fucking-"

"SEAN!" you scream. "JAMMING, NOW! BEAMPOWER, MOTHERFUCKER, CAN YOU SPEAK IT?"

The ventral gun stops chattering, and you hear Sean cursing and ranting below and behind you - without the intercom, over the radios and the guns and everything.

    "Got it," he says.

Ahead of you more spiral-rockets leap from the freighter and dart towards you - then explode harmlessly only a hundred yards from their vessel.

    "Gotcha now, fuckers," you whisper.

I was reading back through the old threads, and I've got to say, I don't really get where the Sean/Sakamoto thing came from. She hasn't really show much for either of them, but if anything it'd have been Ian. She was with him in the submersible, she was surprised/interested to hear he could play the piano, and was the one fighting over his body there. I mean it's not a lot, but the Sean angle seems mostly fabricated by the readers.

Minna emerges from the cloud of smoke and fire, her Striker trailing smoke.

"I'm here," she says grimly. "Bader, Trude, take Ghostrider's left. We'll cover the right. Nobody get ahead."

"That's for me," you confirm, and press your cannon stud. Four twenty-milimeter cannons thunder, the tracers leaping forward and smashing into a FireBee that wandered in front of your sights. His mates turn and fire on you, but you wiggle the yoke and dodge the worst of it like it wasn't there. They flash past and you see Bader's Spitfire roaring in, .303's twinkling as he gives some FireBee hell. His nimble Spitfire can compete on almost even terms with the little bastards, but with the sheer numbers swarming about, he's busier then a one-legged man in an assk- er. Um.

More rockets spring from the freighter, still over a mile distant, but they seem to go twisting off in exactly the wrong directions, some of them exploding almost as soon as they're launched, damaging the Fitzgerald. You see the paint on your port wing blister and put the Douglass into a sharp series of switchback turns, the standard procedure when under focused Maser attack.

"Masers!" you shout, tugging your goggles down over your eyes. Fighter pilots wear them in case damaged engines spew oil into their eyes, but for twin-boom boys like yourself, protecting your delicate eyes from radiation and light burns is far more important.

A little Science Fact! Masers actually aren;t that high energy. In fact, the photons that would be maser worthy, are very low energy (because, Energy is inversely proportional to wavelength (because photons are massless, one must rewrite E=mc^2 to compensate for this!). However, maser weaponry can be theoretically made, but its just something that amused me as someone who deals with this shit as his day job.

You come upon the freighter at a good 250 MPH because of your aggressive jinking, and the entire fucking thing seems to explode with spiral-rockets. The guided ones are still missing or blowing up in their tubes, but these seem to be the standard, old-fashioned spiral-rockets: saturation anti-aircraft weapons. The sky fills with them, and your sturdy A-20G starts rocking from hits. An explosion blasts out your windshield, and shrapnel shreds your scalp. The reflector gunsight in front of you shatters, the edges chipping and flaking away.

You point your nose down at the at the ludicrous freighter, diving like an avenging angel, and prepare to fire.

All we need to do is crack open a hole large enough to sink a FAE into, and that'll be game-over for the martians.

The deck hatch will be the weakest area on the hull, given that it's an external entrance.

Rockets into there, blow a huge fucking hole. Then make a second pass and drop a bomb into it.

"Hey, Sean," you call as you dive through murderous flak. "I got our callsign!"

"NOW you've got it!?" he yells back from his station.

"HALT!" you tell the huge, lumbering freighter below you, and fire your rockets. Armor-Piercing High-Velocity rockets leap off the rails, not quite falling on-target, but in a dive this steep it doesn't much matter. They smash into the thin deck of the Lakes freighter and explode inside, the huge ore-loading hatches on top blowing out and open. A second later, you thumb the bomb release and the light bomber lurches and leaps as two thousand pounds of payload part company with the airframe. Thus freed, you haul back on the yoke with desperate strength, rolling left slightly, and the stern structure of the Fitzgerald misses your right wingtip by mere feet as you scream past.

    "No secondaries," Ian reports grimly.

"Wait for it," you instruct him.

"Bandits at Seven!" Sean shouts, and begins firing.

"WAIT FOR iiiiirrrugh," you grunt as you begin your pull-out above the English countryside, the G-forces crushing any witty statements from your lungs.

"Holy shit!" Chuck calls on the radio, and as you make a wide left turn, you see a volcano of fire spouting from the flying freighter.

    "HAMMERZIET, MOTHERFUCKERS!" you cry triumphantly.

"Sean, keep the radar on!" you call. Everything's coming together now, albeit slowly. Somehow the beam-riding guidance is key to all this. Lethal precision with the rocket-bombs, you figure - bridges nearby are probably already gone, and the special rocket-bombs are responsible for putting these clouds of FireBee escorts into the air that keep that freighter from being anything but a massive target.

Or should have, at any rate. Booyea.

"Kathy, where is - Kathy? Kathy?" You call on the radio, but you can't raise her. The air battle has grown mad and confusing, the dots of the FireBees swarming and darting like gnats amongst the larger silhouettes of fighters. Chuck's mostly unpainted Mustang is easier to find, but the Witches are hard to ID from a distance, except when their shields light up - which they're doing more often then they ought, you notice. The massive freighter pushes on, and to your horror you realize its moving at a decent clip - seventy or eighty miles an hour, at least. It could keep pace with most fast trains. Fire rages on its top, and a huge column of smoke pours from it, climbing into the sky.

You eye the air battle. Your A-20 has spent its wad, and while you might fare okay against 'Sleds, FireBees is another matter entirely. They only sting, but the stings add up.

"What's the plan, Mac?" Ian asks from the rear turret.

You eye the massive Laker, the sanity-shattering sight of twenty-thousand displacement-tons of ship just floating through the fucking sky, and sigh. "Gain altitude, keep our fucking distance, and go for another whack at that thing?"

"With what, man? Does this look like a Teste to you?"

"Fuck the Wooden Waffle," you say... testily. "We'll climb and put cannon fire on the rear, near the shafts. The powerplant and machinery spaces."

"Yeah, take out the steam turbines that are keeping her aloft, good idea," Ian says dryly.

"I don't know, man!" But you DO know that an A-20 can only live in a dogfight as a boom'n'zoom ship, trading energy for altitude, so you grab for the vertical while you circle around, setting up another run down the center-beam of the flying freighter. It's sinking rapidly now, settling towards the evil swirling Smoke-Bank the rocket-bombs brought in. In the distance you can see little patches of Smoke swirling up where more rocket-bombs landed off-course. God bless Sean, god bless radar and thank Baby Jesus you opted for a plane with a goddamn radar set in it, you think.

You climb over the listing freighter, scanning the skies for help - but none is present. Every fighter and bomber is making runs on the growing Martian beachhead, and despite the panic and havoc on the radio, not even Fighter Command can get help to you in only a few minutes.

Has it been that long? Just a few minutes? Jesus.

"NO! TRUDE, NO, NO! BACK IN FORMATION!"

Drawn by some fighter pilot's instinct (or just a birds penchant for tracking movement, if you're honest,) you notice one of those distant dog-fighting dots dive for the earth with the smooth arc of a diving Witch. A cloud of enemies follows her, and you see she's hell-bent on diving-

    -right into the Smoke.

    "TRUDE, NO! NO!"

Below you the freighter presses on, fires raging in her belly, wounded, but on-course to land in her Smoke-filled safe zone.

You have to make a choice. A terrible, horrible, difficult, life-changing choice that will haunt you for all your days. High above the battlefield, with only one Bounce and two targets, you must make a cold, emotionless call that ends in tragedy, one way or another.

You react in a wholly predictable fashion.

It'd certainly be funny, but the logistics might be difficult. We can't just come in behind her because her props would fuck us up, and it seems unlikely that we could get in front of her. We'd either have to take her from the side and hope she kills her engine, or actually coordinate with her, which she probably won't do.

All in all, maybe best to wait until the end of the fight and grab whoever's lowest on magic or injured. I'm still worried about Kathy, myself.

Actually, I was taking it from the War of the Worlds Canon.

But I did search back through the archives, and due to WW2 gas mask technology being slightly better than what the humans originally had in War of the Worlds, humans CAN survive through Black Smoke as long as they keep their gas masks on. Though we may experience decreased performance in our engines.

“Real beds!” McHale was practically salivating over the thought. “We’ve got real beds! Enough for everyone!” When you’d spent nearly a year in a glorified boyscout camp living out of tens and cots, it was the little things that get pilots excited.

Mancini, who had just arrived by truck with Silverman and Capt. Bristol, had already dumped his stuff into one of the unoccupied rooms within the “guest wing.” He was practically salivating himself. “Beds are nothing, you didn’t see the kitchen like we did. Fully stock! I can show you guys some of my gramma’s home cooking recipes…” He began rattling off a number of heavily accented Italian terms, which James Anders guessed were exotic Italian dishes.

“Jesus, Mancini. Be more of a goddamn goomba, why don’t you?”

“Fuck off, McHale, you’re just pissed that your ancestors contribution to the culinary arts was shoving sheep parts into other sheep parts and boiling it.”
    >> OMG BEDS! Writefag 03/02/12(Fri)03:35 No.18172775
McHales reposte to this was to give the Italian pilot the finger as he disappeared into his room. Each room actually had two beds, but there were more than a dozen unused rooms in the wing, so in a practical sense, each pilot had their own room, not to mention the large common room that connected them all.

Anders himself was currently playing a still-quiet game of poker with Bozo and O’Malley. Which reminded James…

“Hey, Bozo, what the hell was up with picking a fight with the witches earlier, anyway?” He pitched a few cards, and took a few more from the deck. “I mean, Christ, you couldn’t have been on the ground more than three minutes, that’s gotta be some sort of record for getting into a fistfight.”

“Well, I get out of my plane, go over and say hi, all friendly-like, and she just starts screaming at me in some fucking moon-language. Then I started yelling at her to speak fucking English, then she got into my face and… Call.”
    >> Writefag 03/02/12(Fri)03:36 No.18172785
    “I’m out.” O’malley said flatly.

“Pair of sixes, Pair of tens.” Anders revealed his hand. “Did it occur to you that maybe you should try to avoid a fight, at least until we figured out where the hell we were supposed to bring you if one of the sparkles broke your jaw?”

“Straight.” He took the pot. “I didn’t ask me to assigned out here anymore than they asked them if they wanted us out here. Sure as hell didn’t give her any reason to start screaming at me in gibberish. Far as I’m concerned she got what she deserved?”

“What’s that? Kicking your ass until Miss Peking Duck broke it up? And I still owe you for popping me earlier.”

“Guys! Hope I’m not interrupting, but Bristol wants us in the briefing room in ten.” It was the ever-helpful Bernie “Flip” Sanders, who had evidently managed to find the kitchen Mancini had mentioned and been able to make himself a sandwich without being caught. James figured he could one-up that act of stealth and have pancakes for the first time since he’d shipped out at the same time.

“Where the hell is the briefing room?”
    >> Writefag 03/02/12(Fri)03:37 No.18172795
Fifteen minutes and two dead-end passages later, Anders and his flight mates were sitting on one side of the briefing room with the rest of the 48th Pursuit Squadron while the witches of the 512th Joint Strike Squadron had arranged themselves as far away from them as possible.

There was a low murmur of conversation among the two groups, and more than a few venomous glances from the witches who’d been involved in the afternoon’s melee.

The room quieted slightly as Captain Bristol and Wing Commander Okabe made their way to the front of the room.

Bristol spoke first. “Ladies…” He paused seemingly trying to find the right word to describe the men of the 48th before giving up. “Gentlemen. I’m Captain Lawrence Bristol, Commanding Officer of the 48th Pursuit Squadron. Before we’d begin I’d like to thank Commander Okabe and the witches of the 512th for graciously allowing us to station at their base.” He nodded to his counterpart, ceding the floor to her.

“Thank you, Captain Bristol. Some of you may still be confused as to what is going on. As you know it is traditional for Witch squadrons to operate and base independently of conventional fighter squadrons for various reasons. However, the face of the war is beginning to change and we must adapt with this change, it is for this reason that we are discarding our old conventions and traditions and it is in this spirit we have decided to form the 48th Pursuit Squadron and the 512th Joint Fighter Wing into the 48-512th Joint Pursuit Squadron,” She flipped a switch the projector, showing the new emblem, with a trio of silhouetted Lightnings surrounded by a pentagram of broomsticks, the traditional symbol of airborne witches.
    >> http://pastebin.com/u/LegioCI Writefag 03/02/12(Fri)03:39 No.18172805
“The 48-512th is among the first squadron to officially integrate witches and fighter aircraft at a squadron level.”

Franklin spoke up during a short pause. “What about the squadron that formed up over Malta, back in ’41?”

“You refer to Faith, Hope, Charity and the Guardians? While they were no doubt pioneers, they were not officially recognized as a single squadron, nor was the Allied command aware of their activities until after Malta was evacuated.” Franklyn nodded, satisfied by Okabe’s answer. “As I was saying, our mission is two-fold. First and foremost, we will act, as we already have, as a Pursuit Squadron, intercepting and destroying any enemy craft over the Egyptian theatre. Secondly, we will work to pioneer strategies and tactics to mutually benefit both witches and pilots, with the aim that the two half will become a greater whole.

“For now, though, I would like our new pilots to acquaint themselves with the base…” She looked coldly over at the male pilots. “…and it’s rules. For this reason we have made English-language maps as well as a list of our rules and regulations, which will likely be different than you are used to on an all-male airbase.”

Anders raised his hand. “Commander, you said we were among the first squadron of our kind? How many other Joint Fighter-Witch squadrons are you aware of?”

“As of today? There is one other Joint-Fighter Wing in operation in Southern England; Castle Barin.”

Captain Bristow spoke up. “The Barin Squadron, however, is not being integrated on as large of scale as the 48-512th- they are still largely a Strike Witch squadron with convention pilots as support.” There was a hint of pride in the statement. “Any other questions?” He looked to the witches’ side of the room, then over to Okabe, giving her a nod.

    “Dismissed.”
