    >my computer was acting up for the past few days, and I was unable to run CQ, sorry about that guys

The next morning, you awaken to the usual sounds of your maniple preparing for battle, albeit half-heartedly, as you will not only outnumber the foe, but outclass them as well. Snasa and Jayne are both already up, and seeing to the maniples preparation, and, after crawling over the rest of your still sleeping wives and dressing yourself, you walk into the brisk winter morning to meet them.

Jayne is buzzing about, snapping at mercenary captains, chastising lazy soldiers, and generally keeping things moving along. She is already in her armor, save her right gauntlet, as she is holding a half eaten apple in that hand, and using the gauntlet to smack particularly recalcitrant soldiers into shape. Sansa is hard to spot, until you notice Vohzd Lennis and a few of his men returning from what you can only assume is a pre-dawn scouting mission, judging by the residual glow in their eyes and those of their horses as they pour water over their faces.

You quietly make your way over to Sansa and Lennis, keeping to the shadows of tents and mingling in with groups of soldiers. However, between your armor, and boisterous nature, a master of stealth you are not. "Commander, you foe already awaits you on the field of battle, in a way." Lennis greets you, grinning widely as you stand to your full height.

"In a way?" you question, the Kharyncheck warrior.

Sansa shrugs "The man we think is the mayor, and a handful of robed men and elves are waiting just outside the gate nearest us."

Lennis nods "Between that, and the impossibly well crafted tower rising from the towns center, we think them all to be arcanists. Save the few Guild Elves we spotted with them."

"Its the towns leadership, all presented in a nice, easily plucked package." Sansa grins, clearly hoping for another easily broken town.

"There are ten of them, and more than a few look to be mages. Add to that the quartet of flesh golems, the pair of Guild Elves, and the bound demon the fight will be far from easy. And they have the power to do great damage to the maniple if you attempt to simply overwhelm them in a sea of bodies. It will not be easy." Lennis advises neutrally, clearly being careful to keep his opinion on the matter his own.

sounds like we should gather our command staff for an arcanist duel.

meanwhile, we should send the maniple to attack the opposite end of the town!

    expanding on this...
if our siege weapons can fire from beyond arcanist range, we use them to bombard the enemy's leadership group.

deadeyes as a skirmishing force. They are to use anti-magic and explosive ammo to strike the enemy leadership.

Cavalry waits at a distance, in the event this is an attempt to lure our command staff into an ambush.

We engage the enemy leadership with our leadership, attempting to distract and spread them so that deadeyes can snipe them with specialized ammo.

meanwhile, our main force waits to attack from the opposite end of town? We'll force their defence forces to be unable to support their leadership, or our force will simply rush the town while they're away.

You heave a sigh "More guild elves. Wonderful. Do they look likely to negotiate?"

Lennis shakes his head "No, they have been preparing for battle for some time. And the towns guards are at the gate behind them, just as prepared."

You turn to Sansa, and order "Assemble the command staff, lets see what the rest have to say about this."

    -----CQ-----

The command staff assembles quickly enough, as most of them are already awake. After you bring them up to speed on the situation, you add "I think it would be best to bombard the arcanist squad with a few runed balista bolts that will pierce through any arcane shields they have erected, then counter with our own arcanists... supported by the Deadeyes as needed."

Uurist nods "Collin will look forward to taking the pair of Guild Elves, and I think a few of my men may like a go at the flesh golems if Catalina doesnt think hers are up to the task."

The necromancer huffs indignantly, before she interjects "The two I have are quite capable... though, if the siege weapons are ranged to disrupt the arcanists, I think now may be a good time to create my own siege golem, so that the arcanists can break through to the town more easily once we have beaten our foes." as she holds her mask in her hands, toying with it idly.

Gaius shrugs "If you aim to send all of our arcane might at what little this town could scrape together of the same, I would be more than happy to volunteer to lead the rest of the maniple to strike at a separate gate. With the towns defenses on the far side of the town, we will likely be in and setting to our work before they can react."

Catalina and Gaius seem to have solid plans. If the warlords can reasonably take on the flesh golems with few losses I say we should let them go for it. I just don't know how strong the enemy flesh golems are. Maybe we can have our ranged units blow the golems to pieces?
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 03/06/12(Tue)23:09 No.18234960
After thinking for a bit you reply "Very well. Uurist, the eager dwarfs from your battalion you mentioned are free to engage if Catalinas golems fail to prevail, otherwise, you are to join Gaius and the rest of the maniple in striking the Uurlanthi village. We will move once the siege engines and golem are ready."

Gaius nods, and asks "Do I have leave to use Lethianas arcanathrower to get through the gate, Commander?"

You shrug "Without siege weapons, I dont see any other way for you to gain entry to the city without trying to lug a balista with you. Dont use it yourself though. I would rather you not explode, my friend."

Chuckling, Gaius gives you a crisp salute, and replies "Then I must be off to finish whipping the troops into shape for Jayne, you'll want her with you for the arcanist battle no doubt." Nodding, you return his salute, effectively ending the command staff meeting.

It takes until late morning for Catalina to prepare her latest golem. And the thing is massive, standing half again as tall as a horse, on six legs that would look more at home as tree trunks than legs, the frontmost two twice the girth of the rear four. From the top of its emaciated, draconian head a tremendous, rectangular dragonbone protrusion hangs out roughly three feet, shading the eight diamonds that act as its eyes. Catalina , looking admiringly at her latest creation as she wraps it in black, unnaturally thick skin brags "The claws are dragonbone as well, and should be more than enough to rend meteorite or mithia." pointing at the appendages as she wraps the arms they are attached to in a second layer of skin, all the way from their root halfway between where the front-most legs meet its chest, and its truncated, almost no-existent neck.

She points at its tail as the skin finishes enveloping what had moments ago been a mass of unnaturally animated dead flesh "The tail will be able to shatter any wooden fortifications with ease... though I think using more dragonbone for the club at the end may have been a touch too much. But Vi insisted, since what she had been made wasnt being used for anything else." From the tip of its battering ram forehead, to the end of its clubbed tail the thing is nearly twenty five feet, a true terror to behold.

Sansa, awed by the necromancers creation, reports "Commander, the siege weapons are ready to salvo, and if Gaius is moving on schedule, he should be nearly ready to strike as well."

You look down the slight hill to see the now nervous looking force of arcanists. Judging by their garb and what surrounds them, you count two necromancers with eight combat flesh golems, three mages, a demonologist, the two Guild Elves, each in splintmail and wielding a thin, finely crafted greatsword, and a cadre of elementalists just barely larger than your own cadre. The mayor is easy to spot, roughly your age, wearing nice enough looking cerulean armor, wielding a spear that looks to be made of meteorite to you, and standing before a pair of large water jugs at the center of his force.

You nod, and reply "Lets see this town removed from the war then." before raising your arm, and firing off a quick succession of signal flares. Without looking to see which flares you fired, you swat your hand down, creating a small quake about the enemy arcanists, enough to shake them on their feet, rob them of their focus, but the somewhat wet ground hinders the attacks efficiency.

As the repeaters begin to spit death at the enemy arcanists, you drive a series of stone spikes through the water elementalists jugs... only for the water to freeze over immediately, then begin orbiting the mayor as a small flurry of snow and perfect blades of ice.

As you process that turn of events, Catalina and Lena, Wulf and Bellatrix in tow rush ahead, the necromancers golems aimed directly at their opposites, as all but two of the combat golems arrayed against you move to counter the siege golem, as the ground trembles with the undead brutes charge.

Teirana shoots past the quartet that is heading your arcane assault force, dodging a blast of solid, frozen lightning with a swift roll, before firing one of her arrows at the demon of insanity, one that looks roughly of age with her, in reply.

As the two forces of arcanists, now equal in number, rush at each other, Collin screaming obscenities as he challenges the Guild elves, your deadeyes keeping the enemy elementalists more focused on defending themselves than preparing to fight their opposites, you realize that the mayor is charging directly at you.

Wtih a grunt, you signal for the deadeyes to focus on the mayor, an order promptly ignored, as a small contingent of dwarf-sized flesh golems unburrow themselves from the dirt at your deadeyes feet, and thoroughly distract the archers with defending themselves. Not that any of them appear to be in danger though, as Sansa leads her chosen handful from that unit in beating the golems back while Aurelius leads his battalion in continuing their suppressive fire.

As you continue to focus yourself, you glance to your right for long enough to see Collin evade a spray of liquid fire that freezes the ground as it dissipates that had been intended for Teirana, before diving into his battle with the guild elves. Off balance and outside of any stance, the two elves quickly have the dwarf on the defensive. A few shallow cuts appear on his skin as he scrambles to properly set himself into a stance, though his two foes do an excellent job of preventing that.

Just above him, Teirana and her foe flit about, the former on her wings and firing arrows, the latter coasting on a billowing mass of stone. To say that the demon of insanities projectiles confuse you is an understatement. Their impossibility pisses you off, to be totally honest. Teirana looks to be far from top form, but if she is anything to go by, her foe is preforming quite poorly in their battle as well. Just beyond Collins fight, Camilus and the enemy demonologist, a surprisingly hale old woman pace about each other, tormented wooden foci writhing and twisting with each flourish and half-uttered demonic name, the very air about them rebelling against the powers being thrown back and forth.

Then, your foe is upon you. You slip past his thrust, and catch his barrage of razor sharp icicles on your shield, just barely managing to catch his ankle in the crook of your own. He stumbles, but does not fall, and that likely saves him from having his head run through, though he does recieve a set of deep gouges in his left leg from the earthen spikes you thrust upwards towards the mayor.

Clearly in pain, the mayor pauses to freeze the blood now spurting from the gaping wounds in his leg, buying you enough time to knock the spear from his hands. As frozen blood fills the spaces once occupied by flesh in his left leg, and a lance of ice forms in his hands, you put a massive hole through his right foot with yet another stone spike, though the rock quickly shatters from being rapidly frozen. the Mayor levels his spear at you and growls out "I earned this town fighting on the Northern front, Drakeling. I will not give up my reward so lightly."

As the ice reforms from the sloppy, hastily frozen mass to one even with his thigh, the mayor dodges your strike with practiced ease. He catches the reverse stroke on his ice spear, which shatters, but does its job of stopping your blade. You tear a trio of head sized stones from the earth, and launch them at the man you are facing down. he dodges the first two with a backwards roll that ends with his spear again in his hand, and stops the third in a thick sheet of ice, that melts away, only to reform again as blades behind his back.

As the man rises, you glance to your left, to see the handful of warlords working to keep the more numerous lesser combat golems away from the flanks of Catalinas monstrous siege golem, which has torn through all but three of the ones not currently being torn apart piece by piece by its masters combat golems on its mad rush for the gate.

Lena is locked in a battle with the two remaining mages, her shields wavering as the shadow mage standing against her relentlessly pounds away, her brother, a light mage, barely holding off Lenas return assault with his shields. Catalina, on the other hand, has one of her foes at her feet, whip wrapped around his neck, foot pushing his chest back towards his ankles. Her other foe, however, is slinking around behind her, clearly having been bitten by her whip several times, though not quite yet dead, his newly necrotic right arm coming apart into a small flock of razor sharp bone splinters, all primed to strike at her back.

"Respect me or not, let us finish this matter. We both know that the victor will break his foes army at the sight of their leaders fall. Now make your move." The mayor growls, dropping into a stance you do not recognize as he draws your attention back to himself.

You slip past a pair of ice blades as they lash back at you, and deftly bat aside the rapid flurry of lance strikes aimed at where you had dodged to. Spinning with your momentum, you smash your shield into the mayors face, knocking his half-helm from his head, and sending him sprawling to the ground.

Without hesitation, you plunge your blade into the knights left forearm, though, the arm quickly deadens, frost killing it, and the deadly venom that your strike injected. Defeated, the man drops his weapon "I yield." he announces, defeated, yet somehow still confident. You look back in Catalinas direction, past the swirling elemental maelstrom being lead by Wulf and what you can only assume is the squire of the knight you just defeated.

As your protege lashes out with his blade, relieving the squire of his arm, Catalina breaks the neck of her downed foe, still oblivious of the danger her second foe presents to her.

You raise a handful of spikes around her assailant with a flick of your shield. You miss the necromancer, but Catalina turns about in time to spot him. The cloud of bone shards around the two breaks down into madness as they try to slit each others throats, or simply skin their foe alive.

Across the battlefield, you see Collin finally find his stride, beating back one of the elves, even as the other presses your blade-master back with every strike. It is a precise dance, and one misstep by any of the three masters will lead to a swift bloody end to the fight. Above him, Teiranas right arm is dripping lightning as it smoulders, her foes arms and chest sprouting half a dozen arrows, each of them slowly working their way back through its flesh. The barbed, ferreted arrowheads are poised to do even more damage as they pass back through the insanity demons body on their journey back to their creator.

Nah. Once an opponent has yielded, it would be bad form to assault them even if it's not lethal. However, the second he does do anything to help someone else, we can do whatever we want since he's a dishonourable dog. He just has something up his sleeve still. Maybe we should ask him why he's so confident still.

"Very well. Though I must wonder how it is that you can be so confident after being so soundly beaten. Is it that tower, perhaps?" you quip as the telltale shriek of the arcanathrower removing the gate, and the roar of charging soldiers drifts forth from the town.

The mayor simply grins beneath you as you pull up five stones, each larger than your head, and set them to orbiting about your hand "No, not only did Lord Jaeger give me this town to rule, but his daughters hand in marriage, and she will soon give me a son. My ransom, unlike that of most who are only lord of some small town, is all but guaranteed."

You shrug, and fire off the stones at Catalinas target in rapid succession. the first takes off his other arm. The second catches his between his shoulder blades, and the last few sail onwards to pulp the skull of the shining mage facing off against Lena.

The red-headed mage capitalizes on her last foes sudden loss of defenses, and takes his legs off with bursts of arcane energy. Moments later, Catalina strides over to Lena to support the now exhausted mage, allowing her whip to slither from her grip to begin injecting the last enemy in that area with its lethal venom. You look back to the mayor and shrug "Provided that Lord Jaeger is ransomed back himself, of course." you quip, before jogging off to aid Collin.

On your way over to Collins fight, which has now descended into a strange back and forth, where the dwarf is always fighting one of the elves, but can never get to the second as it rests, Catalina siege golem strikes the gate. You glance back to see the thing pulling its ram back through the hole it created, only to vomit acid onto the remains of the thing, which quickly begin to melt.

Falling into the stance of the Wolf, you pounce on the resting elf, a wordless cry of wrath on your lips. At first, the elf is startled, and sluggish against your relentless assault, barely able to keep himself from being slain. However, he soon falls into his own rhythm, shifting from one of the easts Sacred Strikes to another, each one perfectly intercepting your own blows, or forcing you to step back and defend yourself. As Collin places a few deep gashes in his foe, you realize that he will soon be moving to support you, if you cant break the stalemate you now find yourself in.

Command roll to demand that the elf yield. We have already captured his commanding officer.

"Surrender and I'll make take you alive. Or you can keep fighting and die here, elf, far from home and your loved ones."
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 03/07/12(Wed)02:31 No.18237468
The elf lunges at you, sword darting back and forth, pressing you hard as he tires to break your defense. It isn't terribly hard to stop the clearly desperate elf. His employer is being bound by your deadeyes, the elementalists loyal to Uurlanth are in dispensary, the city is falling. A tormented wail from above signals the serrated arrowheads pulling the back into, then through the demon of insanities body, killing it even as it ages what can only be thousands of years in the space of seconds.

That moments distraction, as the elf moves to shield his ears for the briefest of moments before resuming his fighting stance is all you need. You switch over to the stance of the Falcon, and bat his blade aside, before stepping in, and planting your foot on his chest, sending the elf stumbling as you switch again to the stance of the Wolf, and slide your blade through the elfs neck, nearly severing his head, and delivering a massive dose of the toxin that coats your sword. To call the elf dead would be an understatement.

As the corpse begins to writhe, you look about. Your elementalists stand victorious, some injured, but none dead. Teirana, despite her wounds is now at her masters side, as he holds his focus against his foes head, forcefully demanding something of her, though you cannot hear what over the sound of the towns defenders routing as Catalinas siege golem strides into the town, its lifeless diamond eyes searching for something large to destroy.

Grinning like an idiot, Collin walks up next to you, ignoring the biting cold that is no doubt slicing right through his tattered white tunic and plaid kilt as he thrusts his great-sword into the ground, and quips "Not bad fer'a mornins work Commander. Not bad at all." His wounds still weeping blood, breath still labored, though his voice is easy and content.

Smiling yourself, you add "And quite the prize as well. The mayor is married to Lord Jaegers daughter... they will fetch a fat ransom no doubt." you pause, and look Collin over again "Now, seeing as the chances of you coming across any worthy foes while we see tot he looting of this town, I would recommend you have your wounds tended too."

Collin sighs contentedly again "Aye. I'll go an do that then, Commander. Tell me if anything interesting happens in th'town."

You simply nod, and head off into the town. The place is in total disarray, Even with Catalina guiding her golem back out of the town. As it turns out, the tower you spotted was actually on the far side of the town from the mayors manor, was recently built, by arcane means judging by the lack of tool marks, and the fact that it is one solid piece.

Before you can move to inspect it more, Gaius approaches you from one side, Sansa and Laelith, the local mayor supported between them from the other. "The town is ours, Commander. I take it the usual destruction of milijtary industry, and liberation of precious metals and gems is our next order of business?"

Grinning Sansa adds "Or, we could let this lordlings wife know that her and her husband are now prisoners."

Gazing up at the tower Laelith continues "Or, look inside the tower. I have a good feeling about it."

I say we go grab the wife first and let her know she's now a prisoner. Gotta make sure she doesn't do anything silly and harm herself/our ransom. Also, let's ask the mayor on what's in the tower/stonesense it before we head in. I imagine the mayor will lie but he might not.

Ask the mayor about the tower. What's inside, prisoners, valuables, traps, etc. Search him for anti-mystic arcana, and sic Autronious on him. Make sure that he's telling the truth.

Storm the tower after gathering reliable intel.

You nod, and look to the mayor "So, what will I find in that tower?"

He shrugs "I'm not entirely sure, to be honest. Some of the local arcanists erected it. They let me tax them, and said that they intended to teach other aspiring arcanists how to use their powers here. Of course, when they were called by Lord Jaeger to muster at Drans Ferry, the place became nearly abandoned. All that stayed in it were with me on the field."

Before you can ask fro him, Autronius strides up, confidence in his step "The man tells the truth. And yes, Jayne sent me once she saw Laelith and Sansa taking the mayor into the town. Here is your arcana detection device, though I can assure you that he has none on him."

You toss a worried glance at Autronius, and accept the arcana from the man. Moments later, you confirm what you were told, and, after pocketing the device, are again wondering what it is you should do next.

You nod "Gaius, see to the looting. Sansa, you and the deadeyes you have trained will accompany me into the tower along with Wulf, Lena, Catalina and Laelith."

"What about the mayor and his wife?" Sansa asks, more curious than worried.

You turn to the mayor "Is she likely to try anything foolish?"

He shakes his head "If anything, she will try to find me to see if I can be saved. She is a passable life elementalist."

Sansa grins "Maybe we could leave Kyria and Vi guarding him then, order the soldiers to let her find him?"

You shrug "If that is the most extreme action she may take, it works for me. See that it is done." The sudden flurry of motion as everyone present but yourself sets to seeing your orders carried out leaves you with the task of holding the now crippled and exhausted mayor, or at least keeping him from falling onto the ground after you prop him up against the tower.

"What do you intend to do with us, once you have us captured?" the mayor asks, clearly hoping to not have to pass the time in silence.

"Have you take me to all of your valuables, take those, imprison you, treat you well enough that I will receive your full worth as ransom, then let you go home." you answer truthfully. "Unless of course you have somehow deceived me. You will see what will happen if you do that once Drans Ferry falls."
