(Now with exposition so long, in needs its own post!)

    PREVIOUSLY, ON RENAISSANCE METAHUMAN:
After experiencing a memory from Gespenst's life, which was wholly terrifying, Dan experienced critical freakout, and was sedated by Amelia. After falling unconscious, Dan found himself in a Dream World, where he met three shades of himself. After talking with himself, he determined Syrpent was also dreaming, and in the local dream area. After meeting with Detective Philips, who was also asleep and dreaming after a long night, the one Dan journeyed across the post-apocalyptic scape of the Dream World to find Red, while along the way Philips engaged the Voice of the Red Star in combat. Dan spoke with Red, discovering her real name to be Anna Ellsworth. Dan attempted to bring her around through conversation, but unfortunately tripped over her bucket of issues, and was forced to call it off for the time being. Then dreaming Miles showed up, and then Gespenst arrived, and now its a Necromancer fight.

Gespenst begins chanting in Old German. Which is about as related to regular German (which you understand some now from that time you accidentally ate a piece of his soul) as Old English is to English. Which is not very.

Ghostly blue energy weaves around his hands, then Gespenst strikes the ground, which starts to tremble, and resonate. The sky goes from red, to gray, and the earth beneath you darkens. The eye is still up there, glowering at you, but everything is much less red. Also, the mesas and high bluffs around you seem to level off, creating a much broader, flatter area to fight in.

Then the corpses start bursting from the fresh, dark earth. Clad in Nazi greatcoats and uniforms wielding old Mausers and older models of machine guns and things. Most of them are wearing scary gas masks or other facial coverings, to add the intimidation factor. You are rather surprised at this, since you are technically in a dream.

Miles stars taking some careful steps back. "Impressive, old bones. But how will your dead company stand... against the predators of old!"

"Well, this'll be fun." You say, also taking a couple steps back, trying not to present to much of a target. You also try to avoid mingling with the army of dead Nazis. But that's because they creep you out.

Miles twirls his staff, which gathers currents of sickly radium green electricity, while he speaks in what you think is Norse. Then he strikes the ground, and bolts of the necrotic energy radiate out. Like with Gespenst's corpses, mostly old bones, rise from the earth. Smilodons, and similar builds of creatures, all fossils of extinct creatures, mostly megafauna emerge. There are also some dinosaur or avian builds in there. You wonder if this is what happens when paleontologists go bad.

Gespenst turns his head to you. "Boy, find your dreamer friend! Ask her the easiest way to quit this place. Our stays here are not natural."

"What tipped your hand, Giuseppe? Was it the smilodon skeletons? The tornado? Or the giant blazing eye?" You say. After all, even century old liches need reminders when they make stupid statements.

You're also very glad he can't scowl at you.

    (2x6 and 2x4 on Barrier)
(No roll for the Psibolt, you're not even really trying to hit him.)

You envision your barrier, and it springs to life around you, way faster and with less effort than normal. Must be a dream thing. You casually hurl a bolt over your shoulder as you cut sideways, away from what is about to become a battlefield, heading for the direction you last saw detective Philips. The bolt sails right over to Miles, and *wangs* across the tip of his spooky ebony medicine stick, the friction causes the tip to smoulder afterword.

(3x1 on Necrotic Lightning. I'll use the 2x4 on Barrier to break that set)

Oh, you got his attention. A bolt of blue-green sith lightning laps at your heels, but the barrier absorbs the shock, and remains up, though you guess it wont hold against another blast of that.

You hear fighting in the distance, and can make out the vague forms of the two combatants, though their hard to see with the dust they're throwing up, and the strange black rain. You'll need to do something to either distract or delay the Voice, so you can speak long enough with Philips.

(Retroactively giving you 3 WP for Humanity, for trying to talk Red out of killing all of the former off)
(Also, while in the dreamscape, you may spend 1 WP to make a small change, such as creating an item or small landmark, and 3 WP for a large environmental change)

just wondering, did we get willpower for self-improvement with the necromancy thing?

And would creating a stone capsule around the Voice, or perhaps some iron bars holding him in place be possible?
    >> Anonymous 03/09/12(Fri)18:13 No.18268324
    >>18268275
Oh, damn. Only three willpower? I say we use that to make as deep and as narrow a pit as possible directly underneath the pike guy and our earth evocation to drag him into it and subsequently crush him.

Good ideas, but Voice-man has the ability to make sharp things appear out of thin air. And turn into mist. Just burying him in a pit, or trapping him in a cage wont hold long. You may not have all the time you need to speak with Detective Philips.

Oh, I didn't mean just trap him in the pit, I mean then we should use the earth around him to churn him into a pulp...It's like the pit is the mortar and a boulder is the pestle. I figured that could be earth evocation.

Would lightning count as a minor or major change?
Anyway actually I still think we should go for a deep chasm opening up beneath him, but line the sides of it with spikes and then jam it closed afterwards.
Shouldn't be more than 2 major actions for that right?

Okay, okay. How about a vortex that sucks him up into the sky and hurls him some place good and far away. That way if he was a mist, he would just keep spinning around and wouldn't have any control. If he was a solid, he'd get thrown somewhere.

Vortices and explosions may bring up issues of collateral damage. Or at least, cause further hazards that affect your ability to talk to Philips.

I think you guys are focused too hard on killing the thing which is only here in spirit. Presumably it comes back if you remove it, given the eye is in the sky, as it were.

If you want me to offer some advice/additional information, you can call for a Tactics roll.

    >>18268495

Sort of. But you'll have to declare you're doing them at the exact same time, otherwise I'll do it sequentially, for the sake of simplicity.

We should probably do a tactics roll, just in case there is extra information here.

    ...
We should also probably try moving Phillips and ourselves away, rather than on moving the Herald of an Outsider.
    >> Omega !Q7t.srvWZ6 03/09/12(Fri)18:49 No.18268677
    >>18268575

Alright, I will provide additional information based on the roll.

    (2x2 and 3x8 on Tactics)

Thinking about it, you realize that the Voice is pretty tough. He's been fighting Philips constantly for like, 15-20 minutes, and other than some cosmetic damage, doesn't seem any slower. Since he isn't really here, just his mind, and he's riding shotgun with Red, you might not even be able to force him to leave at all, even for an brief period.

However, some changes you could envision, or employ your powers to alter might be helpful. Other than being pretty spry and not bothered with falling, he's not excessively mobile. And you've never seen the mist move at any more than above ground height. So if you could actively oppose him with the terrain somehow, that might slow him down. Like the winds idea, but also able to push him back if he was solid enough. Alternatively, you could go the stealthy way, and do something to make it impossible for him to directly engage either you or Philips. This would take some forethought though, since you want to be able to reach Philips yourself . Just creating a bubble of darkness, for example, would be useless.

    (3 WP Spent)

You make a sprint toward Philips trying to close the gap with her. The Voice makes a big leap, but is forced to fall back when Philips conjures another storm of knives from thin air. You get in a handful of meters of her, and draw on your raw will to alter the environment. You're smart about it though, so you have the rise work naturally, pulling material from the terrain around it before jutting up. It creates a natural dip around it as you pull it several stories tall.

You pant a little from you run, before you realize you don't actually have to. Dream, and all. "Detective, I have been advised that we should 'wake up', and post haste." She nods at you. "I agree." She points up at the eye. "Its that thing keeping us here, from normal sleep. Its will is so powerful it keeps us from moving normally." You look up at the Crimson Star staring down at you. "Yeah, it kind of has to go where she goes." You point in the general direction of Anna. She nods. "Then quickest way is to get her to wake up. If she was more cooperative, and an experienced dreamer, we could convince her to wake up. The pillar shakes a little, and you hear some crumbling stones. Clock's ticking. "The other way to force her out is either to shock her some how, like a catapult nightmare, or..." She trails off. "Or?" You supply. "Well, you could kill her. Then you wake up. But since the Dreamlands aren't like a regular dream, they're much more lucid, you'll cause her a lot of mental stress. If you were a really powerful Psionic, you could wake her up that way, too." "I do not like these plans." You comment. You think you hear the Voice climbing the rock face. Quickly. "Well, Raphael knows to wake me if I'm asleep too long. I have special drugs for it. Depending on how long before he notices, if we can hold out, I could be force out, then go to you and shove you back into consciousness." "I do not like this plan either."

When she means shock, she means, like, serious freak out shock. Y'know, the kind of night terror that makes you wake up with a start after a nightmare. IE, what you do has to make her fail a Stability check. This is why Dan didn't like the plan, because Anna is kind of casually staring up at the giant eyeball heart of an outsider lurking in the sky right now. Shaking her enough might be hard. Just sayin'.

How feasible would it be to destroy at least its representation here? Seeing us do that might shake her enough.

If we're just going for freaking out Red, we don't need to actually disrupt it, do we?
Just make it look like we did.

We still have nine wp, right?
3 to make a gleaming blue spike, of pseudo-cyrean style, erupting from below the the eye, and if we can make it reach penetrating it.
1 to make it crackle and glow with energy for a moment.
1 to make a giant space laser shoot out of it, or appropriate effect, aimed towards the eye.
and then 1 more to make the eye appear to sunder and bleed.
It's expensive, but hopefully the theatrics will convince her that we're destroying the Red Star.
(i am presuming we can dream that well. If we can't, just say so.)

Yeah, I'd advise against that, since you will actually be making an attack against it, in a sense, and it will be able to defend itself by exerting its own will. And it has a shitload of will.

If you want to try the plan anyway, and the other people are okay with the WP expenditure, then you can still try it.

As an additional note, remember anything you're doing on the pillar while taking time will give the Voice the opportunity to clamber up and probably try and hit you with his freaky scythe thing.

You look down at Red. It's probably not gonna help her condition, but you're not going to be any better if one of the many nightmares roaming around gets you either. You'll have to really freak her out.

(Dropping 1 WP to fly like an eagle)

You turn to detective Philips. "Can you get down on your own?" She nods at you. "Hop off, and I'll handle the rest." You nod back, then focus your mind, remembering how Cyrean SERAPH modules look, and work. Angled "wings" of glowing blue energy spring from your back, and you feel lighter. You simply step off, and start half-levitating, half-flying down the angle to Anna. Behind you, you hear Philips slam her sword into the pillar you created, which collapses straight down like a meteorite, throwing up a huge wave of debris and dust over the FUCKING AWESOME battle sequence around you, just as you set down. Syrpent looks over at you, kind of resigned. Then out of the dust cloud the Voice comes flying out, bounces off one of the pillars holding her in place, then smacks into one of the benches that remain. It pulls itself out, and looks at you, then at Red.

"Herald, our Lord grows tired of your inaction. Recline as you might in the waking world, you have no need to do so here. Stand, and destroy the dreamers. Your Voice commands it."

Red pauses for a moment, and thinks. "Fine." she looks at you. "No rest for the Wicked, right?" Then she pulls hard with one of her arms. The barbed wire unspools from around the pillar, and she causes it to wrap around her arm, clenching a length of it in her fist. Then she does the same for the other arm. She then flips up her legs and twists them both around in a singular martial arts move, at the same time regaining her feet. Now the barbs do not seem to cause her to bleed, and you also remember that they stick both ways. A reminder of what they represent.

She takes a couple steps forward, and then does something surprising. She places her fist in her other palm, and bows. She then reassumes her fighting stance. Instinctively, trained by your genetic memory, you adopt a static martial arts stance as well. She shadowboxes a little, then looks you right in the eyes. She seems a lot more determined now. "This time, its just you and me. No distractions, no interference, no powers. Hand to hand. Mano e mano."

    DREAM LOGIC.

And by Epic, I mean there's an army of zombie nazis and an army of fossils fighting each other. It's very cinematic. Also, Miles is actually a half-way decent basic Necromancer, he is way too interested in doing flashy, exhaustive shit, like animating T-rexes, or stealing Lich relics. If he went to Europe and attended one of their Esoteric colleges, he could be teaching Necromancy 101 in a decade or so. Ambition is his problem. As evidenced by his ludicrously over the top dream-self.

(Also, now that I think about it, I'd bet money Gespenst is toying with him a little. It's been a long time since he was able to do something like this at all)

    >>18270350

Oh, of course. And I am actually paying careful attention to how you've handled the interactions leading up to that final conflict. Not only does it change her tactics, but it'll also present you with different opportunities. For example, she knows from the first fight and the chase at the museum, she does not want to fight a ranged battle with you, because your Psibolts are harmful and accurate. If you beat the shit out of her hand-to-hand, unpowered, she may have to come up with an alternate strategy than fighting you up close, like you said.

Speaking of Dream Logic, Since we're in a mental dependent realm, considering we cant use the genetic memory martial training in the real world because we dont have the actual muscle memory to go along with it, considering where we are, shouldnt we be able to use those skills a lot better, if not perfectly now that being able to visualize them is the only thing that really matters here?

Muscle memory just refers to the memories you have in your motor cortex. It doesn't have anything to do with actual bodily conditioning. The brawl skill we have? We didn't get that until we got those memories. We can use all of the genetic memories we have to their full potential. Just saying.

This anon speaks truth. Dan literally had no Brawl, Melee or Ranged Weapon skills until his first Cyrean module taught him the universal basics in those areas.

Since then, he's made some efforts to improve both his memory, and his understanding of how to use the knowledge he has.

Funniest (Or maybe just most interesting) part is that the Cyrean barehanded art is all about fighting armored opponents. The idea is that either your gun is empty and you don't have time to pull another weapon, or you're being attacked with your pants down, and don't have anything else to hand. I imagine it involves a lot of disarms, and a lot of blows to armor-low areas, like the neck, joints, etc.

Does ORE have grappling rules? If so, there's this fantastic Muay Thai move where you catch a kick by letting them kick you but moving with the kick to rob it of momentum, then putting them into a knee bar. A knee bar is basically where you grab an ankle with one hand and press down on the knee with the other, forcing them to keep it straight. Done right, you can either keep them on a single leg and an entire leg's worth of reach away from you or, instead, you can hyper-extend the knee, ruining the leg.

...My university had multiple levels of classes for over a dozen martial arts and I decided to take all of them as my "external focus" credits. There are a lot of ways for us to fight smart in order to beat a superior combatant, especially if our fighting style is to be used against armored enemies and she's a kicker. It meshes well for us.

I would probably interpret a move like the one you described as a Daze attack actually, where you give her a penalty of width in dice for width rounds.

Also you can use Brawl as a defense roll too, to block.

Red again shadowboxes a little, bouncing on the balls of her feet, staying flexible. You notice out of the side of your perception that the ground that was the stone floor of an open air temple has become a circular area of swept brown sand, like some kind of practice arena. You guess it is just natural for her to imagine fighting like this. You'll need to decide how you want to approach this. You can play offensively or defensively, you know just about as much either from your genetic memory. And, while she did challenge you mano-e-mano, she does have barbed-wire knuckle dusters, so you can engage her with the staff or your fists, or both.

    >Opening move?

(And for future reference, a list of relevant Maneuvers for melee combat. Remember that doing this reduced the pool by one die:
Called shot: Set one die to any value before rolling the rest.
Choke: Called shot to head, or pin first; 1 Shock per round.
Daze: Target suffers width in penalty dice for width in rounds.
Disarm: Make a called shot with difficulty equal to the target’s Body stat.
Fast attack: +1 width for speed or initiative purposes only.
Feint: Make a Lie roll vs. target’s weapon skill. Target loses a die from highest set; you gain +1d to your next action against that target.
Knockdown: Target falls down, takes 1 Shock, and must spend one round (or one action with an Agility roll) to get back up.
Multiple actions: If you roll two sets, you may use each of them with a separate action. You can attempt more than one extra action by giving up additional dice.
Powerful attack: +1 width for damage or damage purposes only.
Shove: Target loses a die from highest set and moves back a few steps.
Vicious attack: If your attack ordinarily does Shock damage, inflict Killing instead.
Wrestle: One Shock; knocks you and target down; target pinned.)

Question: Since we have a die drop, and the called shot sets one die, I assume any called shots will roll 4 dice, hoping one matches the 5th already set die?

I say we hit her in the head, if she's so blind to other's suffering that she's willing to destroy the world, harming not just us, not just the ones we love and care for, but humanity as whole, then maybe she doesn't deserve to see at ALL.

(3x1 on the Lie check, so your feint is good, but no additional matches for a punch)
(Red rolls 2x3, but the Feint takes a die from her highest set, so no match)

You two circle for the span of a couple seconds, considering. You make a feint left, then come around right. Red falls for it, and her punch narrowly passes your left arm, but she moves to fast you you to exploit the opening right this second.

    >then maybe she doesn't deserve to see at ALL.

Air rushes out of your lungs and you take a couple of stumbling steps back. She'd probably enjoy the moment more if that wasn't the elbow you punched her in earlier.

(And now you roll 4x10 on the Called shot to the head)
(Red lacks sufficient sets to block or beat you, so you deal for Shock to the head, and take her out of the fight)

Taking advantage of the distance separating you, you simply give her a full roundhouse kick right to the head, before she has a chance to put her guard up. She takes the full force, and actual fucking flies a couple of feet, and hits the ground rolling. She finishes a good two or three yards away, face first in the sand. She tries to get her limbs under her, but stumbles, and you notice the world around you swim for a second like you'd just been kicked in the head. Anna coughs a couple times, and you see blood drip down from her face onto the sand.

(Ah, reason. Good. I was going to have a hard time shifting my view of Dan to someone who curbstomps *anybody*)

You take careful steps toward Red, completely ignoring the epic Hollywood Blockbuster of a right going on around you. Including Miles riding a zombie T-Rex and while fighting Gespenst standing on top of a 40k Dreadnought with Hitler's brain in a jar instead of a face.

She manages to get her feet under her, and sit up a bit. She's still clearly shaken from the blow to the head. "Doesn't make any sense..." She says, quietly, to herself. "Why, why can't I beat you!" She almost shouts now. "You're nobody. Just a regular person. I studied, and trained and sacrificed so much to be here. And you're still better."

You open your mouth to reply and PAIN. Your every nerve lights up with fire, you feel *like* you're on fire. Force throws you back away from Red as your brain catches up and informs you that a bolt of lightning flew down from the sky and smacked you in the chest. You try and get to your feet but find your limbs very unresponsive. Red crouches on her knees, unable to do much more, blood trickling from the corner of her mouth, as she looks on dumbfounded. "Daniel!" You manage to roll on your side in the direction of the sound, and see Detective Philips looking concerned in your direction. Then the Voice cuts her from shoulder to hip, and there is a spray of blood. It backhands her, and she stumbles, struggling to regain her feet, while the red knight strolls toward you, war-scythe ready. It looks pretty bad.

Wait, do you hear a chorus of angels?

You're not hearing angels. Probably. But you do think the area is getting lighter. The storm clouds seem lighter, thinner. You feel like you're sitting in a pool of sunlight. The voice is drawing closer, quickening his steps, you manage to finally get your limbs working, and try to get them under you. He pulls back for a swing.

And is bowled over by some unseen force, which rages through the void like a speeding train, smacking into the voice and throwing him a few dozen yards with naught but a lens flare. Your native ESP tracks the source of the force, and you get to meet your guardian angel.

She's much like you remember her, only not. A hair taller than you, with pale, almost white blond hair, and paler skin. She's dressed almost entirely in that silvery jumpsuit you thought her gloves were made of. By Dream!Doctor M is also slightly terrifying. Black angelic wings are unfurled from her back, and they drip with more black ichor. Her irises are glowing blue, but the scalera are pitch black, with the same black substance running down her face in lines across her cheeks. Her lips are also black, like the time she poisoned you. Her nails also seem to drip this dark substance. Given that appearance has to do with self-image, you wonder what she's saying about herself. The literal blue-white halo that orbits her brow seems like pushing it. Detective Philips suddenly appears, sword raised, and takes a swing at Moreau. She effortlessly back hands the sword, shattering it it dust, then drives her palm into Philips, who similarly shatters, shoved out of this world.

"What." Is all you can say.

You want to get your feet under you, but find your legs still uncooperative from the space lightning. You twitch around some more, then get your arms under you and prop yourself up. You look at Eve again, as she walks calmly forward, wings extended.

Then your pushed to the ground by a sudden pressure. You here the "angel" noise again, and realize that is the sound the air makes as her psychic powers pass through it. The various zombie armies are all flattened under the force of her will, crumbing back into dust. Miles is forced to his knees. He lifts his staff to try something, but Moreau sweeps her gaze by him, then back forward. A half a second later, the arc of her view explodes in a line, like it had just been strafed with a directed energy weapon. Miles vanishes in the blast.

Gespenst is able to stand back up without to much trouble. He mutters something in an ancient germanic language, and hurls a bolt of blue ghost fire at her, which smacks into an invisible hexagonal plane of force, the fire washing over it and causing no lasting harm. Eve raises a hand in a gripping gesture, and Gespenst is lifted a couple feet of the ground, like he's being held in a giant's grip. He struggles, trying to break the bands of invisible force. "Time to go, Old Bones." Says Eve in a cold, echoing voice. He stops struggling to look at her. "You're just as much a relic as I am." The skull actually sounds a little out of breath. Weird. "I am the future." She says simply, then closes her fist. Gespenst explodes into a tiny cloud of black mist, then dissipates.

You manage to get your hands back under you, and also a knee, propping yourself up again. You shoot a glance over to Red, who has likewise only just now managed to right herself. She looks very awestruck. Or maybe starstruck. Again, you're picking up some vibes on her Dr. M relationship.

You look over at Eve who continues her unflinching walk. The Voice suddenly comes out of nowhere, and takes a couple swings at her. She blocks with her forearms, then with a sweeping motion disarms him. The knight of red steel and bone tries to claw her eyes out, but she grabs its hand in her off-hand, and crushes its forearm in her grip. She casually brushes it away, shoving it ten or twenty feet. She makes a slashing motion with her hand, and the Voice vanishes into a hexagonal crater about 15 feet across.

Moreau continues without missing a beat, closing the distance toward Anna. Light is starting to break through the storm clouds.

"Doctor, wait!" You say, your sudden urge to prevent her from callously obliterating someone else lets to rise to a crouch and extend a hand. Eve shoots a glance at you, looking a little puzzled. Red takes this opportunity to move, gaining her feet in one swift motion and moving to close the gap.

Eve closes the gap faster, instantly moving the distance from her to Syrpent in an instant, with a terrible ripping sound as space bends between the two points. She meets Red with a vicious knee to the groin, then as she doubles over, drives a fist up into her throat. Anna makes a strangled noise and is lifted off the ground, falling back. Before she makes it Eve does a sweep kick that again sends her rolling in the sand, landing on her belly. She gets ready to leap to her feet again, but Dr. M does that thing again, and closes the distance in the blink of an eye, placing a foot on the back of Anna's head and driving her face first into the dirt again. Karma, thy name is Eve Moreau. She leans down to speak to Red more directly. "Anna, you should reconsider your options before I am forced to take direct action."

She grabs the coil of barbed wire around Anna's neck and tugs, The coil snaps off, and suddenly all the wire goes slack, and starts disintegrating. This is a metaphor for something, but you're to busy *not* thinking about how Anna is pretty much naked right now to figure out what.

The Eye howls. Hell is that noise. INSUFFERABLE PESTILENCE, it bellows. YOU DO NOT STAND IN THE WAY OF MY ASCENSION INTO THIS WORLD. Eve looks up at it disdainfully, cocks her fist back, then lobs a punch up at the sky. Force leaps out, and smacks into the center of the eye, and space warps around the impact site, before it kind of explodes, or rather, the the eye of the storm becomes an expanding hole that radiates outwards, sweeping away the clouds. Anna lets out a pained gasp, slumps to the ground, and fades from existence.

    Doctor Moreau turns to you.

"Doctor." You say simply. "A pleasure." You try to remain calm and collected, despite the fact that she just out-Willed a number of powerful entities, including a Necromancer older than the two of you combined and a God-Like Outsider. Composure is a little hard at this stage.

You struggle to your feet. Then you stumble. Before you can fall back down, Eve again instantly closes the distance between you and her, and catches you, then pushes you back up to your feet. "Thanks, I guess." You say. "No need for thanks. I am only acting in my own self-interest." She says, face neutral. "You've been doing well for yourself. Improving beyond the original parameters of the experiment." Its an observation, not a question. "Good." She says. She looks you in the face, and you see the faintest hint of a smile in her eyes. "You need to leave this place." Again, a statement.

"Five more minutes." You mutter. Someone pokes you with the pointy end of an umbrella. "Ow, ow, I'm awake. Jesus." You open your eyes, and sit up. You find yourself reclining on the couch you were on at the beginning of the dream. A very fancy, comfortable couch. You look around, and find Alexander, Lady Ashwood, Walter the butler, psychomaid Amelia, along with some additional people, namely Roxane, Jeanne and Huan. They are all arrayed around the couch, looking at you with concerned faces. Alexander is holding Gespenst's skull, and resting it on the arm of the couch behind you, presumably so he could do magic things with your brain. The sun looks lower in the sky, from the wall of glass behind them. "Gentlemen, ladies." You say, simply. Roxane gives you a hug. Then she rapidly lets go, because you grunt in pain. Your chest really hurts. Like someone punched you a couple times. Or...

You glower at Amelia, and rub the sore spot where she shot you half a dozen times.

"Speaking of which," You twist your torso around, and look at the skull. "You make it back in one piece, bones?" No response. Ashwood shakes the skull a little, while saying "You in there old boy?" To tiny pinpricks of light appear in its eyes, and pronounces; "Answer hazy, try again later." before they wink out again. Guess he has a bit of a dream-hangover.

You swing your feet off the couch, and get unsteadily to your feet. "What happened?" You ask. Alexander speaks. "Well, we heard the gunfire, so we came to check on it. We found you already unconscious then. We tried to revive you with some counter-chemicals after Gespenst explained the situation a little better, or at least said he did." Roxane cuts in. "When you didn't wake up, Ashwood dug out your phone and called me. Since it could have been magic, I brought Jeanne and Huan with me." Hrm. "So how long was I out?" You ask. "Couple of hours." "Can we elaborate on that?" You ask, a little annoyed. "Simple." She explains. "After the commotion, I entered the room ready for the worst. When you saw me enter you assumed a hostile stance. When I aimed my weapons at you, you did not respond like a civilian, you behavior remained unchanged. I did what I do." She pauses. "Shoot first."

Ashwood pipes up. "I have to apologize for Amelia, Fortesque. Despite her...outfit, she isn't actually a maid, specifically, but rather one of the family bodyguards. She's been trained to respond to Metahuman threats." "By shooting them." You respond, deadpan. "You have a knife." Amelia says. Like this explains something. On second thought it does. You try to remember the brief period of consciousness between flashback and dreamland. "Wait, wait." You say, doing some math. "You evaluated the situation and my position and chose to fire in less than half a second. Six times?" "Like I said. Reflex." Okay, this girl is terrifyingly fast. You're really glad she didn't shoot you in the head.

    >The door to the study bursts in with a slam, and you swing up to one knee, your hands read to deal death in several flavors. Amelia has rushed in, scanning the situation in an instant. She's holding two automatic handguns which you don't recognize immediately. Seeing only you, she levels them at your chest, snapping off the safeties and pulling back the hammer on one. Your instincts scream out in self-defense, while your brain, still racked with pain, tries to catch up to the situation with a rational response, but keeps failing. After half a second, which feels like an instant, she hasn't pointed the guns away, and every fiber of you calls out for you to act.

    >You flare two psibolts, one in either hand, and cross your arms over your body to conjure your barrier, which harkens to life before Amelia can pull the trigger. Or so you thought as half a dozen bullets smack into your chest plate before you're even done getting the barrier up.

    >Realizing her tactic is in effective, she hurls the guns at you, one bounces harmlessly off your chest, but he other clonks you in the forehead, right between the head, and the pain in your brain triples, and you feel like your head may explode, as you stumble up to your feet. Your vision clears you can see Amelia drawing another slender gun from a holster on her inner thigh, which she brings up and fires twice with a hiss of air, before you can even count the shots. You feel a pair of sharp stings in your neck, and a cold, numb sensation begins to start in your neck, and flows into your chest. You feel a little sleepy.

"Anyway, I need to talk to the police. I have some information." You turn to Ashwood. "Syrpent is Anna Ellsworth. Do you know her?" "The younger Ellsworth?" He seems surprised. "I've met her before, yes. I thought the woman looked familiar." You nod at him. "So, we need to get those detectives on it." The crowd around the couch backs up, giving you more space to move up. You step forward, then your spooky sense tingles. You half turn back to the wall behind the couch. You know what is coming. All you have time for is "Shit."

A hole in reality bursts open on the wall, and Red comes flying out with a kick. Predicting it, you block it with both arms, but the force drives you back, past the assembled group, your feet digging into and cracking the marble tiles with the force of the kick, pushing you nearly across the room. She pushes off and leaps back, drawing a symbol in the air and vanishing back into another portal, after which both close. Something is wrong. Anne should not be that strong. Nor is she moving like normal, instead acting with an unnatural flexibility and fluidity. You don't have time to think about this further, as a kick snaps out of a portal to your side. Again, you block it, but again you are pushed back a little. She retreats without even fully emerging from the other side. Then one opens to your otherside, and you are grabbed around the neck. There is a flare of red light behind you, and the sound of glass breaking. Then you're being pulled by someone's full weight.

Then you're not standing on solid ground anymore.

You popped psibolts, and instinctively, her brain was telling her hand to fire. By the time you're crossing your arms, she is already firing the first bullets. The fact that you didn't skip straight to trying to blow her face off is why she tranqed you. Because she realized you weren't operating like an enemy combatant.

I'm not saying that I'm upset with her. I'm saying that she has given us a very good reason to never be around her again. Because she does shoot regardless of the power and regardless of how the power is used. Given that she is trained that way, we, as a powered person, are not safe in her presence, even when we aren't hostile. All of your points are perfectly valid and her reactions are realistic - and are all still perfect reasons to avoid her for the rest of our lives. Not out of a grudge, but out of the way smart campers avoid grizzly bears regardless of circumstance.

I understand that, and it's really not a terrible idea. I just think that maybe it's a tad extreme now that we know what her trigger is.

I'd suggest that perhaps a better approach might be instead to attempt to befriend her so that she never thinks of us as a threat again.

This goes back to Dan tending more to attempt to make allies out of people rather than killing them. I know that killing is not what you're suggesting here, but avoiding her altogether is the same bottom line of removing her as a potential problem altogether.

It's the harder, more difficult path certainly. But isn't that often the difference between good and evil? Evil is the cheap and easy way, while good is honored because it's harder to do? I suppose it comes down to risk/reward, but I'd like to think that it's worth it just on general principle. If everyone disagrees with me here, please let me know - I'm just trying to go off of what I think the character would do.

I absolutely disagree with you here. We are going to avoid her like the plague while harboring absolutely no hard feelings out of fear that if we throw up a Wisp to light up a room or start shifting the earth around to landskate she's going to pop a cap in our forehead. If her reflexes have been honed to the precision that Omega has been saying, we simply cannot afford to ever have her be even remotely surprised by us using a power, because it will result in us getting shot before she's even had time to actually process whether or not the power use was threatening, again, based on what Omega has been saying. As convenient and attractive as your option is, I find it utterly impossible. There's a difference between an option being good-but-hard and being impossible-therefore-dumb. Trying to befriend her is the latter.

It's like a girl who smells delicious to vampires trying to be friends with vampires who have good intentions and poor self control.

Honestly, I'm kinda with this guy. Going back to the guard dog analogy someone made earlier in the thread, you can't really fault her for her training. You also have to accept that she's a guard dog and can bite you at any time if startled. In the same way you don't try to make a guard dog a house pet, it would be too dangerous to try to make her a friend. I think it would be best if we just avoided her from now on. 1( Psibolts are a known factor. Remember, standard issue for most infantry in the War, so they're in the public conscious.

2( A key point you're missing is that she did not JUST reflexively fire at you for power use. She reflexively fired because she aimed her guns at you, and your response was to pull your own weapons, and be ready to fight, unlike normal, non-combatants, who would at least back down, if not freak out and try not to get shot. The guard dog analogy is good, in that she responded with hostility when Dan took a hostile posture. Then since you weren't actively acting on that threatening posture, she was able to reassess, and take a more sensible option. She is still a human being, if an odd one. If it was 100% instinct 100% of the time, she simply would have aimed for your unarmored head.

While, obviously Dan will feel uncomfortable around her, I think a lot of you guys are overblowing this into her as some kind of hair-trigger metahuman murdering machine, which was not my intent. Okay it was, but not in a bad way.
