You are Sonia Reynard, Corvette Pilot for the House of Jarik-Dremine. Last time you were piloting a pre-production Type 4 Attack Bomber as you helped fight for control of Loran II. As your damaged standard corvette was still in orbit awaiting repairs it seemed like the best way to help out.
Through a series of daring actions you disabled a pirate Corvette before it could escape the planet with its cargo and an army of Technicals. You then helped eliminate or chase off all remaining pirate forces in the air or on the ground that could still threaten the airfield, allowing ground forces to secure the area.

Before the PDF troops could exploit the recent victories however the Pirates at the main landing sites ~100km to the west decided it was time to leave. The fusion drives of the Heavy Lifters light up the previously darkening night sky as they climb for space.

"They're escaping!" You shout, then begin checking if you have enough fuel to take the fighter into orbit.

"This is Lord Harmen, pilots I want your fighters back here. Do not attempt to persue the HLV's our forces in orbit will take care of them. Ground forces continue your advance as planned, there may still be pirate elements that have been left behind."

    Meanwhile in orbit...

"Sir! All Pirate Heavy lifters have left the surface, they'll be entering orbit in a few seconds." called out a sensor officer.

Baron Archivald walked over to the Command center's main holo display and stared intently at the new movement. "Get me eyes on the rest of their fleet."

"They've begun a retreat. Medium cruiser assets are moving to assist the super heavy which is trying to maneuver, likely in preparation for an FTL jump. Frigates and other light starships are screening the transports as they launch."

"Get me all starfighters still in orbit and any fleet elements we can muster. I have to slow their escape from the system, prevent them escaping with their captured material." The enemy transports were moving fast, engines likely at full burn despite the damage the drive flare would cause groundside.

"Sir, the response fleet is moving into position but they may not have enough firepower if that super heavy has had time to conduct any serious repairs."

"Get Forthright underway I dont care what shape its in. Have them rally with the response fleet above the north pole and send any of our remaining light cruisers there as well. We'll use the Forthright as a battering ram to smash through their formation, that should cause enough distraction to allow the rest of our fleet to mop up the survivors. Tell our starfighters to begin immediate attacks on the enemy transports. Get the corvettes on standby I want a reserve if they turn back to threaten the stations again."

    >Field too long
The Barons personal aid approached, keeping his voice low enough that only the two of them could hear. "My Lord, Forthright belongs to another House, we cant afford to be held responsible for her loss in battle."

"The hell we cant. This is a play right out of Admiral Qieshozh's book. If we lose the ship we can claim recovery teams found the Admiral and patched him up long enough to give me this order to carry out."
"Yes my Lord. I'll see to... setting things in place to support this imediately."

It's been three days since the end of the battle. You and the other pilots from the squadron sit in a private dining room of a restaurant for the moment acting as the squadron briefing room. After things had settled down and the fighter you'd borrowed had been returned it had been most of a day until you were transfered to a nearby base. Since then you've been trying to find out just what exactly happened after the transports left for orbit.

"So Alex what happened then?" you ask, trying to get info out of somebody.

"Well we heard about it when the transports took off and everybody was scrambled to form up into squadrons. Me, Mike and Wyn were the only ones from the squadron with ships ready by then so we got clear of the stations and waited but they just told us to hang back and protect the platforms. All of the Light Cruisers headed north to where the reinforcements from out system were getting ready then all hell broke loose."

"I wouldnt say that, it just got more interesting." comments Mike, fiddling with the bandages on his arms and forehead.

Alex continues. "Well this other super heavy pops into the system and heads straight for the other one. Mike says we're all going to die at this point and most of the response fleet must be thinking the same thing because they start getting out of the gravity well. I heard them claim it was to help them micro jump to the pirates location but their angle was wrong."
"Hey you were getting ready to run away too." says Mike, poking him in the arm.

"No I wasnt, I just suggested we get behind the remaining defense platforms if things started to get heavy. Anyways, the HLV's from the surface all started docking with the Supers and Mediums. Not much we could do about stoping them then. The Pirates kept running though which I thought was weird because they totally could have taken us with that many ships."

"You're going to like this next part." Reagg Wyn says from the other side of the room, still flipping through a menu.

"Shush for a second! Then right about where the second super heavy jumped in appears an entire Rovinar Taskforce along with a heavy cruiser! They must have been pissed because they didnt even wait until they were in range to open up. A fleet from another House jumped in with them, they had a heavy of their own and some smaller Mediums. Once they saw that we werent screwed any more the entire response fleet charged them but it was way too late. The Pirates started to jump out."

"Did you see the size of that spinal mount weapon on the Rovinar heavy? Its like the thing was firing giant bolts of 'fuck you' at people."

"I've never really seen a Rovinar ship." you mention.

"I'll find a recording of it later for you." Alex assures you. "Their Heavy Cruiser was built around a giant cannon with wings out to either side with phase cannon and torpedo launchers. I dont know how many battleships were escorting it but he Pirates weren't waiting around to find out. The whole taskforce left after the pirates had and quite a few ships from our response fleet followed them."

    "Attention on deck!"

All of you are out of your seats in seonds at the sound of Knight Lt Dayton's voice.

"Good to see you all made it here. We lost a lot of good people both in orbit and on the ground but thanks to your efforts and those of our allies we prevented them from being much worse. In our short time together the purpose of our unit has become a little unclear. This squadron was first and foremost intended as a training unit. Events beyond our control forced us into a hell of a lot more combat than any training unit would normally be called on to face. In some ways you're all better prepared for action than a regular training squad but in others you're still lacking. All of you will have additional training material transfered to them. I suggest you study up on it carefully when you arrive at your new units. Everyone take a seat."

Walking over to a viewer on the wall the LT hooks up a datapad to it to display a view of the fleets in orbit before continuing.
"Repairs to the fleet are well underway, as are salvage operations. The pirates snagged quite a few damaged or destroyed hulls and welded them into place on their super heavy to patch the breaches. At this moment the Pirate raiding fleets from all of Dominion space are retreating to a rally point just beyond our borders in neutral territory. The Terrans are forming up a full blown expeditionary force to persue them. The Rovinar fleet that swept through our territory is one of just seven that will form up into a fleet of their own. Rumors are that the Kavarians are preparing to deploy fully half of their starfleet to assist. The Emperor wants all Houses to contribute forces to our own expeditionary Fleet. Think about it and if you decide you want to join up let me know two days from now."

As you have all completed your minumum number of deployments it is past time in my opinion that you all recieve your confirmation as men at arms for House Jarik-Dremine. And since none of you officially held any rank before now we couldnt award you medals for your actions. There's a bit of a back log.
Report to the Seamstress galleries at 4527 Oakleaf Boulevard to be fitted for your dress uniforms by 1500 hours today. Once you're done that Rendezvous at the Planetary Governors Estate, Lord Harmen is holding a ball starting at 1800 hours. I'll meet you there and we'll get your awards taken care of before you're let loose to terrorize the lordlings present."

Dayton throws a salute and heads for the door but pauses. "Just to be clear I was not being literal when I said to terrorize the nobles. Be on your best behaviour."

It is 1100 hours and you are free until your uniform fitting.

Just going to keep trying to post this every 10 minutes or so.

    >Check the status of our ship.
Your ship has been repaired and the phase cannons replaced, but not the one point defense turret that was destroyed as its non standard armarment.
    >Get something proper to eat, we must have been on military rations for quite some time by now.
The advantages of having the private room from a restaurant double as a brifing room: Good food.
While you dont order nearly as much as Mike it's still more than most of the others. Alex seems bewildered by the amount of food your wingman can put away.

    >Grab Linda and do some sight-seeing and shoppan.
You contact Linda and convince her to get off of the ship for a change and get some real air not that filtered stuff. Industrial center or not there's more than enough green space on the planet to make it enjoyable. She says she'll be down in 30-40 minutes if she can catch a shuttle.

    >Was there anybody we knew who didn't make it?
Sonteb Tans and Kell Oba from first flight are both MIA and presumed dead as is Zhane Vendar from fourth flight. Eric Dubois from fourth is still in hospital undergoing reconstructive surgery.

    >What about in the guys in the cruisers who helped cover the Terran ships.
Alex knows that at least one of them made it he isnt sure about the rest.

Forthright lost nearly her entire command crew, only those in the auxiliary command center survived. Her repairs will take several weeks to get her spaceworth again so she can be ransfered back to her House for final repairs.
    >How many pirates did we shoot down
More than 200 Pirate frigates and cruisers were disabled or destroyed.
    >How many ships did we lose?
Some 200 corvettes were destroyed or crippled and another 100 frigates and cruisers along with them.

Other than the loss of some platforms the battle in space is being considered a draw when factoring in the amount of salvage taken by either side.
The story on the ground is not so promising. While the pirates didnt get too far from their landing zones the PDF took heavy casulties keeping it that way. Vehicle losses were heavy and the Pirates stole anything that wasnt nailed down. The only saving grace is that the House SP Torp stockpile had already been moved.

"Any idea what medals we're all getting?" You ask once you finish eating.
"No idea, besides I think the Lieutenant wants it to be a surprise."
Wyn speak up "I know we've got some of those combat bars with all of the action we've seen. And we got a unit comendation for helping with that Liner that was boarded. Personally I'm more concerned about the dreadful colour our uniforms are going to be."

After a few minutes of enjoying the scenery you convince your navigator to go shopping. Shoes, clothes, it doesnt take you long to realise they're all a bit out of your price range since you're still paying off that medical bill.

    Damn.

Still you try on a few things and keep them in mind for next time. You can always place an order later and have something delivered provided you arent on the front lines. You borrow enough money from Linda and pick up an ornament to be shipped to your parents. There isnt much to choose from other than the local sports team mascots. Finally you decide upon a little pewter model of the hab stations that orbit Loran II. It's something anyways.

    >4527 Oakleaf Boulevard

The street is bordered by the occasional Oak tree, each looking old enough to have been planted when the colony was first founded.
"I guess they were a bit literal with the roadway naming scheme." you decide.

The Taxi pulls in to a sheltered underground dock below the building to let you out. It's still afew minutes before 3 so some of the others are still waiting outside.

"Nice little dock they've got here." Comments Alex "Shelter when there's a rain storm."
"Or a bullet storm." Adds Mike.

Frowning at mike's comment you look back towards the entrance and spot a pair of what look like sentry guns built into the ceiling. Guess they dont like uninvited guests.

"I'm thinking we should get Taxis on the way to the Ball once we leave. Who knows what we could run into on a public shuttle that could mess up the uniforms." Says Windsor, probably the most well thought out thing you've ever heard him say.

"Pilot Alexander Palaiologos. Also Uniform fitting."
"Mike K Serth. Same." Mike adds after the rest of you turn to stare at him. He's doing his best to sound bored.

    "Ladies follw Miss Ella."
A dimunitive Dro'all woman, likely in her teens waves for you to follow, leading you to an elevator.

"Sorry, these arent the usual fitting rooms. The ones upstairs took a bit of damage in the fighting the other day. If you'll step this way please."

Next you're led into a dressing room bigger than some appartments. Two older women are waiting with scanners and other tailoring equipment.

The thought of saying 'I'm not wearing undergarments. Is that a problem?' pops into your head but you quickly crush it.
You've stared down death a couple of times since joining up now, this is minor in the grand scheme of things.

The older woman is slightly relieved. "Glad you're not prudish. I've had enough of those for one lifetime though I'd settle for it being enough for the week. Those scanners in the elevator need calibrating so let us double check the measurements the old fasioned way.
Some Lordling earlier was carrying an overcharged energy weapon on them and the passive sensors didnt like it. Raise your arms."

Doing as she asks you raise your arms and the woman uses a measuring tape to check if you match the scans. The final results are not as flattering as you'd like, must be all that working out you've been doing.

"The scans are close enough. Your commanding officer will provide you with a unit patch and rank Epaulette pins when you're formally promoted. Wait here."

She and the other woman return a minute later with your new uniform in hand. A black turtleneck is first then black pants with with a violet stripe running down the sides of them. Then the uniform coat, all dark violet with bronze trim and a high neck. The epaulettes are left unornamented.

A small flap runs down the front just to the left of center covering the clips that hold it closed. On the coat's centerline located on the flap is a bronze triangle with a circle cut in the center. Your name is stenciled in small lettering above your left breast.
It seems rather plain overall but does fit well.

Let me see. Hmm... there is a holster and swordbelt usually included with most uniforms but we dont have them here, you normally get them later. I could add something for a palm pistol easily enough, you'll have to buy that on your own obviously and most boots have a knife holster. Remove the pants and I'll be right back after I make an adjustment."

    >Surely we already have a side-arm of some sort, but having a spare weapon is always useful.
You were not previously authorized to go off base with a sidearm. You'll be able to after the ball.

When the seamstress returns she shows you the tiny holster that will allow a holdout pistol to fit in the small of your back without too much trouble.
"Just dont fall on it." She suggests.

Ella appears next with a pair of shiny black boots tall enough to cover most of your shin. Checking them you find each has an empty knife holster.

Uniform assembled you stand in front of a full body mirror to have a final look.

"Thank you for the good work." you tell them.

"Our pleasure my dear. Be aware that when you get into the higher ranks the colour of the pants isnt quite so important, just the quality."

    >Perhaps they could line the pocket with some material so the weapon won't show up on scanners?
    That would be expensive.

By the time you are led back to the dock several of the others are waiting in their own uniforms. Mike does not look at all happy, tugging at the collar of his coat.
"I dont like this tight jumped up clown suit. Maybe I should have joined the infantry, at least they dont have uniforms like this."

"Yeah but they have to keep theirs clean and ready for inspection despite always being posted near mudholes." You tell him.

Alex and Windsor are next out followed by Wyn, all three of them dont seem to mind the clothing change.

"I'm going to wait here while Chinelo get fitted." Wyn tells you. "It's going to take a bit longer because of the injuries. You guys might as well go head."

"Still saying Taxi is the best bet." repeats Windsor.

"It looks god on you Mike, besides you know just as well as I do how the infantry fared in this engagement. I doubt any uniform is worth that."
"Uh actually how well did they do? I wasnt exactly going out of my way to listen."
"They had all their vehicles shot to pieces then had to outrun technicals on foot."
    "Oh."

A taxi arrives a few minutes after you place the call and all four of you pile in, with Windsor taking the Front seat. The vehicle is large enough for you and your wingmen to sit side by side without much trouble.

"So you guys are the only squad that didnt have anyone killed, pritty amazing huh?" comments Jarik.
"Oh boy here we go." Mumbles Alex.
"So aftter I become rich and famous let me know if any of you want a job in my personal guard."
"Shut up Windsor." All three of you say in unison.

The taxi arrives at the estates with plenty of time to spare. Or so you think when you first get out. Then you spot Lord Harmen's castle. It didnt seem this big from the air with the amount of tree cover around the outside. Some of the largest trees you've ever seen populate the grounds closest to the castle. Redwoods.
Then you remember the others hadnt seen the castle before from the air.

"Oh my god its like we're visiting that theme park planet. Whats it called, Disney World?"

It could take awhile to find the right room where the Lieutenant is unless you ask someone.

"Lets figure out where we're supposed to be first." You suggest.

The three of you drag Windsor along before he can decide to bugger off and find a bar since neither of his wingmen are alive to do it.
"Dont think I'll forget about this!" He tells you all.

"Yeah whatever. Alex you know more about high class stuff than anyone save First flight posterboy here, can you lead the way?"
    "I can try."

After ten minutes of walking through the grounds and being allowed entrance into the castle Alex finds a servant who points you in the right direction. The room you are looking for is closer to the entrance by the outer walls.

After knocking at the door another servant lets you in. Lt Dayton is waiting inside sporting a dark red dress uniform with gold trim loaded down with decorations. A couple of gold combat bars adorn the right side of his coat along with a few silver and bronze ones below them. A metal black and silver shield is attached to the upper left arm of his uniform with a Lion on it.

"Glad you made it here with time to spare!" He greets you, setting down a wine glass at a small at the back of the room.
"I just heard that Eric Dubois is out of surgery, he's expected to make a full recovery."

All of you say you're glad to hear the news.

"Help yourself to any non alcoholic beverages while we wait. There's still a good hour or more until the medals arrive from casting."

Grabing a quick drink you tell the others you're going to have a quick look around and that you'll be back in time.

"Dont try to gain access into the upper class areas yet, the ballroom is in lockdown until its been fully prepared." Dayton warns you.

A quick circuit of the castle's outer reaches shouldnt take too long you figure. Worst case you might have to run on the way back.

Somehow you end up near the motorpool at one point only to be turned back. The hallways of the outer castle are all large enough for a tank to drive through without difficulty. Made up of large stone blocks by the look of it, they likely are made of titanium fiber reinforced concrete. The grounds outside the castle are filled with gardens in the few places where light is able to make it through the redwood trees. Off to the south are stables and riding paths for Horses where you spot a red haired young man in armor practicing with a lance on horseback.

Noting you're running out of time you hed back to the castle with just enough time to avoid running.

[x] Drinks, and talk to everyone there.

By the time you get back both Wyn, Chinelo and Isod have arrived. The Lt starts looking at his watch obviously waiting for the medals to arrive. Using the downtime you decided to talk to the new arrivals. You never really had much opportunity to talk to Isod before now and ask about the space battle.

"That was insane. I never want to attack one of those Super Heavy Cruisers again for the rest of my life. If my scores are good enough maybe I'll see about helping train new pilots instead."

That's a career option you hadnt considered before.

before you can talk to anyone else a servent lets in an army enlisted man in a brown dress uniform cut not unlike your own. He's carrying a stack of wooden cases you note.

"Finally!" Exclaims the LT downing the contents of his glass and walking over to check their contents. Satisfied after inspecting them, all of you are ordered into line and stand at attention, with the exception of Chinelo who is still in a wheel chair for a few more days.

"This is the moment I'm sure all of you have been waiting for. You've survived, some of you have even thrived and now you step out of the shadows and into the light. Not that there wont be people you meet in your career who cast a shadow, but now you get a chance at it. Before today for all of your skill and training you were still just sitting in limbo, not an enlisted man but not a true officer either. Congratulations for making it."

Dayton turns to the stack of cases held by the soldier and the names printed on each one. "Alphabetical order looks like."
    >> That slow typing guy !!cAsGzl185mF 03/14/12(Wed)01:05 No.18319634
    >Burning out. Will try to finish medals.

Dayton holds out the House crest for everyone to see before beginning.
"This is who you are until or unless something drastic changes that."

The House Crest is a Quartered shield with the 7 point Dominion star, a crowned Lion, a black eagle, and Diagonal bars alternating between white black and gold.

You're the fourth in alphabetical order and its all you can do to stand at attention while the LT sees to each pilot before you. Then its your turn.

"Sonia Bethany Reynard. Pilot, Fourth training Squadron, Fourth training Wing, you are hereby inducted into the House of Jarik-Dremine as a confirmed Man at arms. It is my hope that you will continue to serve and fight for this House with the same dedication as I've seen from you in your time with this squadron."

Removing what looks like a cloth patch from the carrying case the soldier holds the LT turns and affixes it to the right arm of your dress uniform. After a second it sets in place as though it had always been there.

"As you have shown potential for both leadership and levelheadedness in battle you are bestowed the rank of Flight leader. In the event the commanding officer of your unit is killed or otherwise incapacitated it is expected that you will be able to pick up the slack. Provided ofcourse that another has not been selected as next in succession before you."

Dayton attaches your rank insignia to you Epaulettes then pulles out your combat bars.

Not true 'bars' per se, each is made up of two round metal pieces spaced a handspan apart that attach to the uniform, connected by a cord of the same colour metal. In this case the Lieutennant attaches Four Bronze Combat Bars to the empty space on the right chest of your uniform, one below another. One for each combat deployment.

It's one less than everyone else present, as your deep space scanning mission and recovery of the Endeavour didnt count as true combat. While you were in quarentine the rest of the squadron had gone out to hunt down some of the jammers.
    Oh well.

The space on the left side of your uniform is soon also filled with awards. A training ribon, a wounded in action ribon after getting shot on the cruise ship, a Noble Citation for the same action, a Pilots Star in recognition of skill. The Bronze citation star looks slightly out of place since it's something given for operations in atmosphere, namely your mad chage to attack that grounded Corvette."

"Lastly you are awarded a Medal of Bravery, dont get killed looking for too many of these."

You and Lieutanant salute each other. "Congratulations Flight Leader Reynard."
