So, /tg/, my 4e group just got characters we've been playing for about two years now to hit 30 with no cheats and no obvious level grinding.

    We did it.

    >Divine character is now an Exarch fighting the good fight for his god. He was lifted in a pillar of light as soon as the final fight was over
    >The Primal character disolved into a pile of "Primal-ness" and is now a Primal spirit herself, fully connected with nature.
    >The Arcane character, after giving my character a final handshake, stepped through a portal to a tower at the edge of the elemental chaos where he plans to spend his days studying that plane and how to harness it's great power
    >My martial character is just left standing there

I'm not sure what do with this guy... My group is having a "epilogue" session next week so I need to think of something.

My guy never wanted power, never wanted to fight, but forced himself to in order to protect his hometown (And things spiralled from there). He's at the peak of human ability... and it's all downhill from here.

    ...

I think he'll start a farm back in the hometown

    >MAH BOY, THIS IS THE PEACE ALL TRUE WARRIORS STRIVE FOR

That'd be good OP. A man who fights to protect should be allowed to revel in that which he saves.

Have him start a city where he is king and loved by all the people. If hes an evil character then start a city and rule it with an iron fist. Going back to your hometown and starting a farm is lame. You are practically godlike, you gotta do something cool.

Go to the big city and give a large donation to some good cause ON THE CONDITION that they build a grand statue of you at the front, standing as an immovable barrier against all enemies of peace. ensure the statue is built with a helmet completely covering the face. Now remove his armor for the last time and place it where no one will find it (or where anyone will find it but won't know who it came from) now people will have an image to follow and evidence of your life and you can retire with complete anonymity to the countryside. No one will bother you but all will know of your deeds.

The old man closed the dusty old tome, and slowly stood, bones creaking as the child scrambled forward to help his grandfather up.

You're level 30, you should have a pile of cash laying around somewhere, put it to work for you. Build hospitals, and inns, improve roads and other things. Bad End

He returns to his home town to see it has been razed to the ground in his absence by a group of low level bandits. He tracks the bandits down and basically slaps them around but then allows them to live. The bandits come and settle 5 miles over from the site of the origional town and build it in the exact format that he remembers. He then proceeds to be a quiet farmer on the outskirts of the town until one day another group of bandits arrive and attack. He manages to singlehandedly stop the bandit attack, thus allowing him to feel that he did in fact save the village.

He then retires permanently, and takes up being a bard. he weaves the tale of his and his friends great lives all the way up until the final adventure. After all of them go their seperate ways the story ends.

One of the children of the town proceeds to ask him "will those great heroes of legend ever return?" to which he will reply "We all are great heroes of our own story, the true measure of any hero is right here." and tap the child over his heart.

Your charachter dies of old age shortly thereafter, and at the funeral there are none who even remember who he once was, or of what he was capable. He is remembered instead as the great teller of stories. After the funeral one of the learned members of the village does his best to write down the entire story of the adventures of the heroes into one book. This book becomes the most popular book in their plane, and proceeds to inspire hundreds of future adventurers onto their path.

The immortality section of the adamantine warrior

Armored Icon: When you complete your final
quest, you stand as an immaculate example of the
knight in shining armor. All armored warriors
throughout time recall your story. Your armored form
is the ultimate gauge by which all other armored juggernauts
    measure themselves.
To become this icon of indestructibility, you must
stand fast in your last battle. You cannot fall, give in
to pain, or break in any way. Prove that your armor
is like your skin, and your skin is like your armor.
    It can’t slow you down; instead, it holds you up;
Unbreakable, you carry each other into fable. Perhaps
your armor even takes you to the side of a deity, such
as Kord, who forever holds you up as an exarch of glorious
and fearless battle. You then become the patron
    saint of all such warriors.
Your name becomes synonymous with toughness
and resilience. It develops into a word with which
fighters compliment one another for bold exploits in
heavy armor. When you hear echoes of your name
spoken in the world, you pound your gauntlet-clad fist
to your breastplate. You know that those who aspire
to be like you hear the ringing sound with spiritual
    ears and take heart.

But, again, check the immortality post. And the thought of his armor. It has been bathed in the strongest magics. Held firm against terrifying beasts beyond our realm. His name, whether he wishes so or not, is whispered by a scared but stubborn town guard as he faces a crushing orc horde. It is studied with other storied names by squires and young knights. General and Kings use his singular battles as fables and teachable moments to inspire or educate troops. It is roared by armies as they stand firm against encroaching evils.

One average day on the farm, the fighter tilling the field and enjoying the peace he worked so hard to acquire, sees his young children rushing towards him. They're scared about something and beg him to rush to the town square. It takes only a moment for what are old bones and tired muscles to snap back to the readiness of the all those years ago. In full sprint he makes for the square, dreading the possiblities. Have the orcs gotten so bold? Has an old foe come to enact his revenge? Is his wife alright? All these questions fly through his mind as he leaps over the towns fence in a single bound. Dashing he makes his way through the streets, over carts and past surprised onlookers. But as he reaches he reaches the square there is no death or pain, only confusion. The statue in the town square, upon which his impervious armor "White Wall" stood for years, was missing.

Although the fighter had many powerful friends, they could find no thief of the armor, none of their old allies could find even a trace of someone who would have even dared remove it. Especially though their magical protections they had placed on it all those years ago. It was if the armor itself had simply gotten up and walked away.

It was a few years later that the fighter heard a strange tale from a traveling bard. He'd grown accustomed to hearing his own tales of his adventuring days, the glory of the white wall and his defense of all things innocent. All that poetic stuff, but this tale was one he'd never heard before, because he was never in the east and didn't recall ever fighting off a pair of blue dragons. After his story the fighter asked the traveler where he heard the story. It came from a man he met crossing from the east, in a caravan, only a few months ago.

As the man aged, he heard more tales. People claiming to see the White Wall and his heroic efforts to save them. But all this time he was here, home on the farm. Did someone steal his armor only to continue his great quest to save others? It seemed impossible, his armor was so enchanted no other creature could wear it but him.

As the time came, as it does to all men, the fighter rested in his favorite chair, overlooking his prosperous farm and marveling at how his hometown had grown. He smiled a wrinkled grin and enjoyed the sun warming his old bones. He heard footsteps coming from around the corner of his old home. Even now he was still alert, and in a moment up on his feet and ready with his cane, though it was too much for him, and he began to tumble. The footsteps turned to a rush of armored clanking, and before he could fall to the ground he was caught in cool metal hands. He thanked the stranger, and looked up, only to see his own armor had caught him. But what was stranger, was that behind the faceplate there was no eyes. No face nor head, the armor was moving of it's own accord. It placed him down in his chair and handed him his cane. The fighter couldn't hear the armor, for it didn't speak, but knew that it had returned only to say farewell. Although the fighters time had finished, there were always towns that needed protection, wars to fight, and innocent people who needed help. His body could no longer continue the fight, but his armor could and so it would. The White Wall will always fight, until the end of days it will fight, and when that day comes it will fight still.

I too would think the returning to the hometown ending feels the best. I'd think of it like the end of The Hobbit, in a sense, hang a sword over the fire, a helmet and a suit of chain on an armour stand, a few treasured momentos of your friends and time on the road. In the end, your goals were not seen as the lofty aims of power or knowlege, but what all warriors should strive for; To become a shield and protect what you hold dear. Your armour, forever a symbol of that goal, the White Wall would become the emblem for that virtue.

In the end, your name would be forgotten in the annals of history, but what you stood for, what you fought for and who you were when you did, those things would live on forever.

Your fighter takes off his armor, sheathes his sword, and goes home. He find a comely maiden, marris her, has a litter of kids and lives his life.

Every night he sits awake, too little sleep he's claimed that night. The dreams keep coming. Are they dreams? They feel so real. The friends he'd lost. The people he'd killed. Had he denied them of what he so vigously enjoys now? How many orphans and fatherless children had he left in his wake? His wife reaches out o touch him. This was a familiar ritual. He would tense, grip her hand tight. She would tell him who she was, and he would relax. The weeping that followed was always bitter.

Sorrow washes over him. Immortality was his, but the price was his humanity.

Combine all of these. The White Wall as a roving force for good, but evil forces managed to disassemble it and weaken the animating magics. Once the heroes re-assemble it, they find that, while it can no longer move completely on it's own, it can assist a wearer with it's own strength, acting kinda like magical powered armor (the setting I'm using has all kinds of little magitek bits, becaust our whole group really likes magitek). I've been coming up with endgame items for the various party members, and this'll be perfect for the party's Paladin (uses the Paladin Of Freedom variant class from 3.5, so he's not a total moralfag).

Had a game once. Similar story. Cleric decided to go be with his God. Barbarian decided to join the Wyld Hunt (yes, with the True Fae, its a long story). Doctor was thrown into the far future to study medicine with the greatest human minds in history.

My guy was a fighter who had always wanted nothing more than a nice long adventure before settling down to get married. When God came down to reward the party, my fighter didn't know whether to have a huge epic reward, or just be pointed in the general direction of a nice girl and nice little town.

So he chose all of them.

He is now the Form of A Hero. Yes, as in platonic Forms. Now, every time someone is a hero, he is them. And every time he settles down, he is that guy as well.

We're running a game now set 500 years in the future. People whisper his name before headed out to complete something important.

I wrote all that White wall animated armor stuff, granted for a different character of mine. It just sounded like it fit rather well. My character was a halfling paladin, who admired the tales of a much older halfling paladin who wore a full suit of armor and adventured for justice for many years. She would sing her songs and tell her tales all the time, in every town and often during adventures. Eventually my character was going to come face to face with her hero and find out that her the woman in the armor had actually died many years prior, but her armor had continued on her quest for justice and bold action without her. If she could prove herself, the armor would even let her don it, and continue the quest for justice.

Just thought the idea of a young characters hero turning out to be a walking suit of armor was pretty neat.

    Essentially, become Mandalore.
Mandalore is the rank/title given to the Sole Ruler of the Mandalorians in the Star Wars universe. They are truly the most honourable of men.
They do not reside in luxury, but with their comrades. A Mandalore is a leader, but a brother. He lives with you, he walks among you. He drinks with you.

Get all that money you got since you're level 30, you should have heaps.
Start a village. Build a hall, houses, hospitals, inns, farms. Welcome the needy and offer them a life of honest work.
    But don't be their leader.
Be their friends. Live with them in your own house the same as theirs. And you'll find the best kind of respect you could ever receive.

I've had players who would purposely let some of the bad guys in every fight, be they thieves or monsters, get away on the idea that they'll get the exp for defeating them now, and then come back stronger and worth more exp later. Or would always "forget" how much exp they had and simply write in the exp that the other players had. Not counting fudging die rolls and the like. Others would pretend to have more damage than they do normally, ignore taking damage and keep fighting after hitting negatives "because it's not fun to be dead." and even cast level 7 spells at level 7 instead of level 14 (back in the 3.5 days)

I've also played in games where we gained a level every session, started out with 4d6 re-roll 1's and 2's, and had 4 extra feats.

These guys are the reason I drove an hour and a half every Saturday to a different game than played in theirs...

And what has he really accomplished?
True, these people are alive now but they will die in time. History will eventually forget them, and him, and all the things he has ever fought for.
There is no great change, no lessening of evil in the world. If he does not fight evil, someone will, someone else will lead the cause of justice and protect the innocent, and they too will be forgotten. How many more have come before and done greater, yet they have no effect on the world today, or if they do no one knows of it.

And yet, evil falls prey to this as well. Even the demon lords he has vanquished, had they have succeeded, would eventually die and be forgotten in the world. True, he may rule for a time, but it is time alone that will defeat him.

    Just... time.

In time, will his cleric fall from grace or become forgotten in the world? Will the primal spirit still leave a mark so many years later? will his wizard friend discover any magic that wasn't already forgotten many years ago?

He could easily protect his loved ones, but to really change the world, to make a definite change he needs to not only live forever, but to exist always. So he leaves, wandering the planes between gods and demons, no one able to defeat him, nor stall him. Searching for the only way he can be sure that his quest had worth. That he can protect those he loves and have his efforts matter.

Fighter becomes time traveling hero of justice.

Similiar-ish thing happened to my group.

The campaign ended with only one survivor after the final encounter, haunted by the guilt and plagued by nightmares he fled from the world, isolating himself in a cabin.

A sequel campaign set some time later saw us find his body, it was heart breaking reading the journal. His last entry was a single line "I wonder if I'll see them again..", we found him clutching a single framed picture of our old characters on the day they'd graduated from the military academy.

With the death of his last remaining foe, so too dies his purpose. His single reason for being, snuffed out with a stroke of his sword. He turns to leave, but finds himself unable to take a step. They called him brave, they called him fearless. He had charged into battle against a thousand demons without hesitation, and had stormed the castle of the master of all that is evil without a single thought. But this, his first step away from the life he has always known, is the hardest thing he has ever had to do.

Mustering his strength he steps forward, and does not stop walking."

"It was a peaceful life, working the land to pay the bills. The events that seemed so important not even fifteen years ago slowly started to blur in the soldiers mind. Replaced with thoughts of peace and happiness living and caring for the children of the orphanage. While the Great War felt like a distant memory, it's effects were still visible in the faces of those who were left without parents. It was a feeling he couldn't express, as he was never a man of words. But in his own way, he felt like he was still fighting for peace and justice. He quickly found that he preferred the smiles of his surrogate children to the bloody battles that had once been so common place. Occasionally though, late at night when he was sure the children were asleep, he would sometimes unlock the cabinet that now holds the armor he wore on that fateful day. He would put it on and feel the weight of his trusted blade in his hand. Listening to the sound of the intricately designed plates rubbing against one another as he moved was like listening to an old but beloved song. However as time moved on he found it harder and harder to remember the words. Eventually, years would pass at a time between visits to his old friend. When he would open the cabinet door he would see the dust accumulated on the glimmering plate, and it would fill him with sadness. As valuable as this armor would be, he could not bring himself to part with it. A memento to who he once was, hidden away from the rest of the world."

"It was a night like any other, dusk had just fallen as the soldier was walking back to the orphanage from the neighboring town with a basket full of bread and meat for supper. However, unlike any other night, this night there was a distinctive rustle in a bush along the road he was traveling. Spotting it instantly, the soldiers mind snaps back to a time long ago. Preparing for an ambush he continues to walk cautiously down the path when out from the bush springs a single cloaked figure brandishing a rusted short sword. After preparing for the worst the soldier is surprised to see the face of a ragged youth, no older than 17, demanding that he drop the food or perish. Without meaning, the soldier barely manages to stifle a laugh. Enraged at the perceived mockery, the boy thrusts forward with his shoddy blade only to be easily disarmed by the practiced hands of the soldier. Surprised by how easily he was defeated, the boy slowly backs away when he's suddenly approached by the soldier. The boy stares in confusion as the soldier hands back his blade without a word, and proceeds to adjust the boys arms and feet into a stance more befitting a warrior, before stepping back a few feet as if to say try again. Again, the boy swings at the man standing before him, but this time faster and with more power. Quickly side stepping his swing, the boy tumbles forward onto his face. Smiling, the soldier bends down. Offering a loaf of bread from his basket to the boy, the soldier speaks in a gruff voice. 'Come, son. You have much to learn.' "

"They say you can judge the measure of a man by who comes to visit them on their death bed. The soldier slowly opens his eyes. No Kings stand to greet him. Nor dukes, dragons, dignitaries or demi-gods, but the space around his bed was not empty. Instead, it is filled with those who he so proudly calls his children. Fighting back tears they look down at the aged man laying in his bed, their hands out stretched to rest on his cold frame, fruitlessly trying to warm his weakened body. Strength left the soldier quite suddenly weeks ago, and he knew his time was short. Smiling up at his children and reassuring them that everything will be alright, the elderly soldier thinks back on all the good times, his mind never once settling on the war. His life as a soldier had ended long ago when he took that first step, and he has been walking ever since. But now, as he prepares to take his final step, he is reminded of one task left undone. Searching for a particular set of eyes, the soldier pulls a single, ordinary looking brass key out from around his neck. The boy who once tried to rob him on the side of the road is standing closest to his head, unable to suppress his tears as they flow soundlessly down his cheeks. No longer a child, the mans eyes seem confused as the brass key is pushed into the palm of his hand. The elderly soldier smiles weakly, and in an almost sing song voice recites the phrase every person in that room has heard almost a thousand times while growing up.

'Where the corrupt seek to conquer the small,
That is the place where the White Wall stands tall.'

There, surrounded by his beloved children, the soldier closes his eyes for the last time. And right as his consciousness fades into darkness, he can't help but notice how this final step is infinitely easier than the first."

This is the nature of war, whose stake is at once the game and the authority and the justification. Seen so, war is the truest form of divination. It is the testing of one’s will and the will of another within that larger will which because it binds them is therefore forced to select. War is the ultimate game because war is at last a forcing of the unity of existence. War is god.

Brown studied the Judge. You’re crazy Holden. Crazy at last.

    The judge smiled.

Might does not make right, said Irving. The man that wins in some combat is not vindicated morally.

Moral law is an invention of mankind for the disenfranchisement of the powerful in favor of the weak. Historical law subverts it at every turn. A moral view can never be proven right or wrong by any ultimate test. A man falling dead in a duel is not thought thereby to be proven in error as to his views. His very involvement in such a trial gives evidence of a new and broader view. The willingness of the principals to forgo further argument as the triviality which it in fact is and to petition directly the chambers of the historical absolute clearly indicates of how little moment are the opinions and of what great moment the divergences thereof. For the argument is indeed trivial, but not so the separate wills thereby made manifest. Man’s vanity may well approach the infinite in capacity but his knowledge remains imperfect and howevermuch he comes to value his judgements ultimately he must submit them before a higher court. Here there can be no special pleading. Here are considerations of equity and rectitude and moral right rendered void and without warrant and here are the views of the litigants despised. Decisions of life and death, of what shall be and what shall not, beggar all question of right. In elections of these magnitudes are all lesser ones subsumed, moral, spiritual, natural.

He was a man called to the fight, not drawn to it. His cause was true and his intention was pure; to protect that which he cared for. There is little that cannot be said for a man willing to commit himself to such a life. The end came for him, not by the sword, spell, or some fell creature but in reaching the pinnacle of man. He made the ascent past the mundane and became something greater; an idea. The White Wall, a perfection of man’s ability to defend, in this he found peace of a kind. The man was allowed to return to that which he loved and fought for and bask in the simple joys his hometown had to offer, the joy of a peaceful life.
The idea was allowed to flourish and spread. It struck the fear so rightfully needed into the hearts of the wicked and evil. It inspired lesser men to greatness. It consoled the meek and timid, telling them there were champions to fight for them.
The man was given his peace, and the world was given The White Wall. A fitting end to the tale, right kiddo?
The man finished the story for his son, after being begged to tell it once more. He had lost track of how many times he’d retold it.
Someday I’ll wear that armor dad…I’ll be just like you.
Not if your mother has anything to say about it, kid, she’s the one thing even The White Wall couldn’t stand up against. Now go play, it’s a beautiful day…

I'm sure somebody's said something like this already, but...

You can have your character 'retire' without making him just a simple farmworker OR a king.

Have him be the start of something big. He settles down in a small town. Meets a nice girl, takes up blacksmithing. He could even gain a degree of renown—not the kind where he's famous the world over, but the kind where people who know, I mean REALLY know weapons and armor, would recognize his handiwork instantly. No other man can makes weapons so simple, yet so elegant, so light, so perfectly balanced.

And then some day, someone will come through his town. He'll be young, strong, not inexperienced exactly, but still new to his own quest; he'll have an air about him, though that the old smith will recognize instantly. An air of... destiny.

And he'll say, "Wait here. I think I have just the thing you need."

And the White Wall will walk again.

You know, I always prefered the martial characters in 4e. All the other power sources had paragon and epic destinies that were very defined and locked you in, in terms of RP.

However, the martial shit was always "You hit shit with a sword" then "YOU HIT SHIT WITH A SWORD EVEN HARDER!!!"

Much easier to RP however you want.

... I'm afraid I don't have any reaction images on this computer, so I'm going to have to make do with words. That was beautiful man.

That's pretty appropriate for epic tier, I think.

The Cleric became an exarch of his god, the Fighter was elevated beyond godhood.
The Druid character became a piece of nature, the fighter created a piece of all realities.
The Wizard crossed planes seeking ultimate power, the Fighter now guards the planes crossings and keeps that power in check.

    Best Epic Destiny Ever.

"And may I stand today as I have stood always under your eyes...proud....kind...and strong so that this day those I protect rest well."

There was a soft echo as the voices spoke her words in unison. Her squad always said their prayers together hoping against hope that those words resounded louder across the shining realms to the ears of the White wall.

Jettar stood up from her prayers and cast her eyes over the young men and women of the 1st Legion many were barely past their seventeenth years but all looked up into her eyes with the same determination that she herself held over these many years.

"They come for us in their thousands." - She spoke softly.

"We will deny them ground." - The squad shouted back, their combined voices causing a tear of pride to well up.

"They are endless like the deep ocean of stars." Her voice raised a treble.

"Then they shall break against us." Their voices sounded off once more.

"They seek to destroy all that we cherish." She shouted back into their awaiting faces.

"BUT ONLY THEY WILL BLEED." They howled back at her rising up and unsheathing their weapons of war.

    "COMRADES...WE STAND TALL AND PROUD."

That battle was stupid difficult, and ultimately pointless.

Also, what the hell? You actually fight him in Final Mix+? Goddamnit, why can't they just make one version of the game? I just want to run around killing shit with Donald and Goofy, I don't want to have to read badly translated moonrunes to understand the full story. And that shit's canon in the sequels, so I'm missin' out.

Fuuuuuhhhhck. This is the problem with in depth settings. You can't just sit back and enjoy them, you have to read explanations of stuff by people who have way less of a life than you do.

And then you could always end on a grimdark note, with the character growing old and weak.

As he rocks back and forth on his chair he looks to the window, and instead of the calm night sky he sees a burning inferno over yonder. Raiders and bandits had come, and were setting fire to the nearby village. In a sudden burst of a reaction similar to his adventuring days he reaches into his old cabinet pulling out his old sword and hefts on his plate armor, feeling the weight and having trouble sustaining it after all this time without it. He makes for the village in hopes of helping the commoners. As he arrives the bandits break off their attention from slaughtering the villagers and looting houses to the old and stoic man standing before them in his gleaming suit of armor. The White Wall begins to hack down the bandits coming for him, but soon finding his strength to not be what it had used to be and soon find himself unable to keep cleaving. Overwhelmed, he is finally cut down by the bandits who begin pulling off his armor in hopes to sell it off, leaving the old and bloodied corpse of the long forgotten "White Wall"

Just imagine how peacefully he will rest, knowing that his armor still continues, and will forever continue, his quest to protect innocents. Unlike the many other warriors among the halls of the dead, who have seen their loved ones eventually fade from existence after their death, their efforts gone to waste with the passage of time. But this humble man, little more than a farmer with a need to protect others, had brought into being the greatest force for good in the universe.

Though... if such can be accomplished for good, can evil not go about the same process? Epic level adventure hook, Knowing the White Wall cannot be destroyed, evil find a way to take the armor apart, and scatters it across the planes. Eventually it will re-build itself and set right whatever evil the accomplish, unless before that time they can finish their master plan. By guiding a naive young warrior thought the path of ultimate evil, they seek to create a black super powerful weapon capable of doing as much evil as the White Wall does good. The PCs need to rebuild the White Wall and with his help defeat the extra dimensional BBEG and stop the corrupted warrior from spawning the greatest force for destruction the universe has ever known.

There are a few more, but these are easily the most impressive. Also, the version wars go both ways. The original Japanese version of the first game didn't have Sephiroth, the Ice Titan, the Phantom, or Kurt Zisa.

    >He's at the peak of human ability...

If appropriate, have him show up with all of his wives/bastards in tow at the next session. The martial character is now a martial King.

Just play it out like 1E/2E did.
