120 KB Privateer Quest VII: part 2 MachineSpirit !!ZwhWAwcuTHG 03/14/12(Wed)22:21 No.18330915
Your modified Arvus Lighters are quickly delivered in exchange for your luxury textile cargos, Enginseer Advi and yourself inspecting the engines that deviate from the standard Arvus model. "She'll make orbit even on a high grav planet, Captain. I believe the engines are an STC variant of those used on thunder hawks." Advi seems enthralled by the new shuttles, her mechadendrites opening inspection panels and probing for any obvious flaws. "A few minor flaws, but I'll have them corrected to appease the craft's spirit long before we arrive in Saregin's Path."

With your business in system concluded, Sword of the Omnissiah burns hard for the edge of Labado before activating her Gellar field and warp engine. On course for Saregin's Path, you prepare to excuse your unneeded crew from their stations when the gellar field's stability fluxuates violently, your safe little pocket of reality quickly encroached upon by the roiling emotions of the warp.

Reality fades as the warp's energies pierce your bridge, tendrils of unfathomable emotion quickly coalescing into nearly a dozen deamons. Several crew go mad at the very sight of this event, devolving into babbling mockeries of the human form or blindly leaping upon their fellows in an enraged madness. Athe quickly draws her power sword, cutting down one of the twisted mockeries of the female form as it lunges for Julin's throat with a deamonic claw. Julin quickly returns the favor as the remains of the first deamon turns to a corrupt vapour of barely comprehensible colours. Your cogitators overload as the ship's spirit surges in response to the presence of its ancient foe, the venerable machine spirit pouring its devine essence into the gellar field to seal the gates from this dark incursion.

A madded crewman falls to your laspistol as you sever your MIU link with the ship, the sheer quantity of information dangerously close to crashing your cogitators. To your left, Julin and Athe both cut down another deamon before Athe is tackled to the deck by an insane crewman, the youth wildly attempting to claw at your XO's eyes. Opposite the two women, Quein strikes down a twisted deamon and maddened crewman in a single stroke, though he narrowly avoids a blow from a second warp entity. You take aim at Quein's attacker, but a disembowled crewman is thrown into your body and sends the shot into a bulkhead. Before you stands a deamon coated in the crewman's blood, his entrails wrapped about the feminine horror as some sort of hellish jacket. Behind the mocking horror, a large form begins to take shape, tendrils joining to slowly form the outline of a four-armed horror. Your flesh brain screams in horror at the sight, though your cogitators have long since dominated any commands to your flesh body's functions. At your feet, the disembowled crewman howls in pleasure, his mind clearly corrupted by the foul warp creature's touch.

Your attempt to bring your pistol upon the blood-coated deamon is foiled when it whips your crewman' entrails at your arm, entangling you as the abomination closes, no doubt to add your organs to it's debased decor. Freed from the tangle of intestine by a sweep of your power sword, you exchange blows with the deamon as the battle continues to rage about you. Quein bellows as a maddened creman grapples and bites down on his arm, ending the wrech's life with his lasgun even as a deamon bears down upon the officer. A pair of crewmen bravely charge a deamon that attempts to slay one of your navigators. Though the deamon is slain by their bravery, it also takes one of the men with it, cutting the poor soul in two with its warped claw. Julin contiues to cut down her attackers, though she is unable to assist your XO at the moment. The mad mad attacking Athe is soon thrown to the side as a deamon pounces upon your prone friend, only to be stopped by a brilliant flash of light. The deamon is soon fading to foul vapour as your XO's power sword finds its foul core.

Your flesh burns as the Omnissiah's power flows through your potentia coil, righteous might filling your unworthy form. The disarmed deamon is vanquished with a down stroke of your sword as your laspistol sends the Omnissiah's might to banish the two deamons circling Quein. Athe and Julin slay the final deamon as your surviving bridge crew grant peace to those beyond help, though you are unable to save the survivor of the pair from earlier. His own hand pulls the trigger that ends his life before the madness takes his mind, causing your XO and several crewmen to mutter quiet prayers for the brave soul. Your medicae mechadendrite attends to several minor wounds received during the combat, those with serious wounds going mad as the corruption consumed them. It takes nearly a day to get a complete list of your crew's casualties, though the incursion was shortened by the Omnissiah blessed ship's spirit.

"Quein, organize the crew and prepare our dead for burial in the void. Master-at-Arms, organize the armsmen and ensure we have no more guests." Both quickly move to follow your orders as you reconnect your MIU to the ship and locate Enginseer Advi. "There were no incursions near the engines, Captain. I do not believe any engineers were lost during the battle. The Omnissiah has surely blessed this ship's spirit." You note the spirit's fluctuations through your connection as it senses Advi's message, flesh brain wondering if the ship is feeling pride. Cogitators quickly dismiss such a notion, but the spirit's energy levels continue to flux moderately as you chant the proper litanies and rites of thanks to it.

Disconnecting from the ship, you note Athe gently closing the eyes of a slain crewman, the youth that had tackled her in his maddened state. The brilliant light that saved her requires investigation, but not on the bridge. "Athe, my quarters." Your XO's face turns a shade paler, her left hand instinctively grabbing for something hidden upon her breast. "Yes, Captain."

Then try to investigate her history with the Canoness. Ask her about her past before we met her, why she ended up on Tortuga and if the light that shielded her has anything to do with her connection with the sisters of battle.

Your flesh brain screams wildly at your cogitators as the silence of your walk drives it mad. Entering your quarters, Athe remains silent. Hand still gripping an unsean object upon her breast, she alternates between matching and fearing your soft gaze. Her face is covered in long scratches, several of them clotted with blood, her clothing tattered and lightly stained with blood where deamonic claws were barely dodged or could not find purchase. Fearless, she battled and defeated warp entities without pause; yet she stands before her mortal captain, a barely augmented techpriest of the Omnissiah, and fear is clear in her eyes and posture. Cogitators surmise that you'll have a difficult time making her fear worse. "Athe, I'm asking you this as your friend, not as your Captain. Are you with me?"

Athe's eyes meet your own for a moment before she meekly looks away. Your cogitators quickly surmise the cause of this uncharacteristic behavior, shame conflicting with loyalty. "Canoness Laci giving you personal care. The silver chain around your neck when you returned from the hospitallar medicae. A blinding flash of light protects you from a deamon's attack. The logic is sound, Athe. Do I need to know what possessed a Canoness to give a scum from Tortuga a holy relic?"

"I'm," Athe's gaze falls to the floor, presumeably locking upon the strange bolt that you too find mysteriously interesting. "I'm not from Tortuga, Elesh"
