Waking into the early nigh darkness, you lead your wives to the command staff meeting. Gunther, Cornelius and Aurelius are already in the tent quietly conversing with each other already, though the rest of the staff has yet to arrive.

Fate, being the fickle bitch she is, proves you wrong by having Camilus arrive mere seconds after you through the tents opposite entrance. "I take it tonight will be another cloak and dagger Commander? If so, I think it would be an excellent opportunity to test out my new demonhosts."

As the rest of the command staff begins to slowly filter in, Gunther adds "Or simply have the deadeyes deal with the town guard. The rest of my order will not be easily taken, even with surprise on your side."

I see no reason why we can't start with a cloak and dagger operation and then begin a full assault of the town once the infiltrators have taken out a few targets of importance such as bell towers or other such signaling devices.

Agreed. Take out as much as we can quietly and then let Camilus start the attack with his new demonhosts. If anything is going to cause havoc, I imagine they would be a decent way.

I guess we should have demonhosts make a distraction with a small squad deadeyes while the others take out signaling devices

Sounds like a lot fun but if we do that should we give the deadeye at least some time to get in or is the distraction enough for them to do that. I guess we should ask them that
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 03/15/12(Thu)21:23 No.18343015
After thinking for a while, you reply "Perhaps your demonhosts would serve as a distraction, supported by the Deadeyes."

Cornelius nods, before he adds "We will need to time it carefully though. It would not do for the knights int he spire to escape into the town to aid in its defense. Gunther, how will we tell your men from those still loyal to Degnar?"

The man nods "I have already sent the message that we are no longer servants of the crown. My men will be in their homes, favorite brothels, taverns or inns tonight."

As the table falls to silence, Finian interjects "Perhaps my scouts would be better suited to the distraction force, so that all of Aurelius' men would be able to focus on felling the guards that are still asleep."

Gaius nods "A solid enough idea. Though I would recommend that one of the mercenary battalions, or my own, join Cornelius and his battalion in surrounding the Spire. It would be foolish to not use the advantage of numbers when we hold it."
    >> Maximus 03/15/12(Thu)21:29 No.18343079
    >>18343015
Sounds acceptable. If the demonhosts aren't going to be used for distraction purposes, perhaps we should have them reserved to be sent to the place that has the most resistance.

I think he says replacing the Deadeyes that would have be sent with the demonhosts and just replace them with scouts while still using the demonhosts as a distraction. That way all the Deadeyes would be part of taking out signaling devices and take out sleeping troops.

You nod "Very well, Finian, your battalion will go to support Camilus' distraction. Aurelius, you will move to kill any resistance in the town along with The Unshakeables." turning to face Cornelius, you add "Cornelius, the Dyrol Myrmidons will join you in keeping the knights in their spire."

Wulf, leaning back in his seat, adds "The Order of the Bloodrose wields pikes, tower shields, and shortswords on foot, I would recomend not allowing them the space to bring their pikes to bear."

As the table again falls into silence, Gunther adds "The Order did just receive a shipment of mithia from the Duchy for weapons for our new recruits, so I would recommend against trying to collapse or burn the spire down around them." You simply nod that you understood the man as a response, then signal the meeting over, leaving the captains free to prepare their battalions.

"Recently?" you ask Gunther on his way out, a bit worried.

The knight shrugs "It has been sitting in storage for several months now, the Order had been unable to find a smith willing to come to us to forge the blades we needed." before doing a double-take as Catalina passes by. "I take it she is one of your wives?" he asks as you casually greet the necromancer.

You shake your head "No, I have not wed Catalina, nor is she a concubine of mine."

Looking the man over as his face shifts to one of shock, you realize that he must be roughly of age with you. "Are you mad? Letting a girl like her go?"

Again you shrug, amused at the knights obvious infatuation "I met her shortly after asking my wives hands, and did not know her very well until the time of the wedding. To pursue her would have been... awkward."

Grinning, Gunther replies "Such is fate, I suppose. May the fickle bitch smile upon you in battle." as he begins walking off in the direction Catalina had been moving in. As you continue on to prepare yourself for battle, you realize that you may very well have competition for Catalina, if you ever decide to add her to your family.

    -----CQ-----

Things proceed according to plan splendidly during the first half of the assault. The exchange of guards is slow, more than enough time for the Deadeyes and Unshakeables to dart into the town, slaying the guards replacements, and moving off to disable the towns ability to swiftly rouse itself. Almost directly behind them, you move with the 454th legionary and Dyrols Myrmidons, and have the Spire encircled within minutes.

The structure itself is impressive, made of three smaller towers twisting in upon themselves in a nearly perfect spiral. Its walls are over-grown with rose vines, the handful of blooms left on them a bright white, starkly contrasting the red painted stones.

Of course, it will be an abandoned husk once you give the signal from your ring, and the distraction begins, ensuring that you will not be ambushed once you begin your assault on the tower. You have given Aurelius more than enough time to slay or capture most of the town guard, and the men inside may very well notice the force gathering about their fastness soon, so any more of a wait could lead to things ending poorly for you.

Nodding to the soldiers around you, you raise your hand and fire off a signal flare. Outside the town, you can hear one of Camilus' demonhosts roaring. Moments later an alarmed cry emits from the still sleeping spire. As you rush towards the buildings door, it flys open, a pair of men charging, pikes leveled burst out of it almost immediately. Being at the front of the charge, Cornelius to your left, you are directly in the line of one of the pikes, and are forced to duck down behind your shield to avoid being impaled on the steel. Next to you, Cornelius ceases the pike with his claw, and snaps it in half, continuing to rush onwards past the now ruined pike to decapitate the man who had been wielding the weapon.

As you bat the pike aside, and rush towards the second, the tromp of armored boots can be heard from inside the spire. You arrive at the front of the battle line just as Cornelius disembowels the second knight to rush from the spire. As you set yourself into a wide stance, even more noise begins to fill the city around you. Bells falling from their mount, unrung and unringable, peasants screaming in terror, soldiers laughing as they search for valuables... guards dying terrible deaths jsut beyond the towns wooden walls. It forms a delightful symphony, you muse. Though you are swiftly are forced to focus on the onrushing knights, as the clatter of their pikes, to long to be properly used from within the spire entryway clatter to the ground as the armored men begin their charge.

Furious, the knights charge your line, hoping against hope to break through, to save their home, to cheat death and snatch victory from the jaws of defeat with naught but their valor. Your first swordstroke decapitates the man leading the charge, your second severs the right arm from the man to his left. That causes the least amongst them to feel their resolve falter. Your third and fourth strokes are equally fatal, tracing bright red lines along the vines outside with their blood.

As Cornelius buries his shield in one knights neck, and tears the heart from another with his claw, you realize that they are already slowing in their charge. Or, perhaps these men are waking from their sleep to find their home already invaded, and being looted by a force that is wide awake, and used to fighting at this hour of the night. "Forward!" you bellow as you begin to advance, dodging every blow leveled at you, slaying foes with every counterstrike. They are good, you can tell that, but to be brutally honest, you are feeling the same way you did when you last sparred with Garagush. None of these knights can even touch you.

As your force moves into the Spire, Cornelius begins to shout orders to seal all of the exits "If we encounter the Master of this order before you, what would you have us do with him?" your captain asks, left arm dripping blood, ears twitching as he listens for more armored boots descending from the upper levels, or charging from the armory.

Smirking, you reply "If he fights, disarm him... but leave them attached. He has a crux to adorn before we leave this town." before jogging off to climb the tower while Cornelius leads the battalion in ensuring that no enemies escape.

As you climb the tower, you find most of the order dead, halfway into their armor, a few with only their weapons, most of them still in their bedchambers. A few men challenge you, but they are swiftly dispatched as you continue on to the top of the tower. Eventually, you reach the topmost point of the spire, and are faced with an ornate door, painted to resemble a rosebush in full bloom, blood trailing down from its blossoms. Off to your right, is a trap door to the roof of the spire, but you are fairly certain that the man you seek is behind the door.

Stepping through the door as you open it, you are confronted with half a dozen dead Myrmidons, and an older man, healthy in his 50s, perhaps, wearing glistening green plate armor and a finely trimmed longsword. Like most of his orders champions, the Master has a kite shield emblazoned with his orders crest, a smaller version of the mural on his rooms door. "Treachery brought me to this point, no doubt." the man raises his sword to his face in a silent salute, before he continues "Though I may fall this night, I will slay you first, drakeling." he swears, kissing his blade, and stepping back into the stance of the Uursan, one known for its powerful strikes, and ability to attack as easily as defend.

Smirking at the old knights self assuredness, you salute him back, and drop into your own stance, before charging. A few stones tear themselves loose from the wall, and fly at the knight, but he deflects one, and dodges the other. Unfortuanately for you, only two of the five you attempted to strike the man with were even close to hitting him. As soon as he is in range of your blade, you strike high, hoping to bash him on the head an incapacitate him in that manner. Looking thoroughly unamused, he blocks your strike, and counters by knocking your shield from your hand with his. "Petty, fool, did you think I would be so easily bested?" he asks as he swats aside your next strike. "Did you think I bought this esteemed position?" he asks, stepping forward to strike at you, easily slipping his blade through your left armpit, disabling the arm.

"No," you grunt out, striking at the man thrice, but failing to do any damage to him in return "I believe that you sacrificed innocents and made dishonorable deals with honorless Lords to achieve your position."

The old bastard of a knight just chuckles "Oh, and I'm certain that Rayhna will gnash her teeth and rage that I am allowed to waste my eternity away on the far side of the Bleak Coast... but I will anyways. death will be a sweet respite to the hell of reality... though I do not yet intend to have my rest." You take the opportunity to try to staunch your legs bleeding with some of the dirt and small stones around you, though there are precious few of both to be found in the room you are in. Of course, your anger... distracts you, and it is not a few small, clean stones to block the wound, but a full sized brick from the wall that smashes into your leg, with almost enough force to dent to armor.

As the knight bursts out laughing at your stupidity, you sigh, and rush him. Leading with an overhanded slash, you spill the mans shield to the ground. Lacking a working left arm to punch with, you smash your helmeted head into his, knocking his clear off of his head and spilling the man to the ground. You raise your foot to kick the mans head, hoping to knock him out, but he rolls away at the last second. "Are all Degnarians as stupid as you, or just the ones that think themselves strong enough to best me?" the man asks as he lashes out at you, his adamant blade grinding against the blade Vi grew for you, his unflinching eyes boring into your own with grim determination.

You quickly realize that the knight will overpower you soon, so you move on to the best tactic that you can quickly execute: a shin-scrape. In armored boots, it is more like a sideways kick, but it has a solid enough effect. As the knight goes toppling down to the sound of metal screeching against metal, and his own yelp of shock and pain, you swiftly bring your good elbow up to crash into the side of the mans head. He is unconscious before he hits the ground.

Moving to clasp your left arm as your adrenaline wears off and the pain becomes almost unbearable, you hear the door open behind you. "Justinian, we have the town, and our-" you can see the look on her face without turning around. Crushing worry, anger, and that strange look she gets when she wants to fuck your brains out while your wounded. Of course, as she is working right now, it would only flash for a moment before she says "Fucking dragoncuts Justinian! Why are you always getting yourself hurt in these small, inconsequential battles? I'll send for Vi... we're having her take off the ugly scars after you can move your arm again, by the way."

"Wouldnt she be safer with your parents?" Sansa asks, watching the energetic little girl bound from the room.

Gunther shakes his head sadly "My father was conscripted at the start of the war, and my mother was found to be an elementalist, and died on the northern front a few days after my father did." the man explains as he moves to retrieve the sword that fell from the Master of the Orders hands. The knight forces a laugh, and trys to spit on your face, though Autronius catches the spittle with his hand. "You'll get nothing from me." the knight declares.

Sighing through a grin you answer "No, I wont. Autronius, a mystic under my employ, however, will. He will not be gentle with your mind."

As you settle into a meditateve posture next to Autronius, and the now captive former master of the knightly order that ran this town begins to scream, the mystic answers your question "They scream now because I found that it is easier to find information you want by dragging the worst memories a person has to the front of their mind, and holding it there. You would be surprised what some suppress, or how easy it is to turn something happy into a nightmare."

Though, being an aggressor in this campaign, that was expected. Undaunted, you make your way over to her realm, and quickly find yourself outside the Sunlight Hall, Raynha stepping through the massive buildings front door to join you. :Justinian, I take it you have come here to speak with me about the knight you just captured?"

You nod "He thinks death will be a respite for him, an escape from punishment. I do not think that should be allowed."

Raynha sighs "I agree, however, I am using most of the power I have been gaining since my ability to work in the mortal realm again to claim those whom I should have taken as soon as they fell back from Neshai."

Nodding in sad understanding, you ask "And, is the goddess likely to agree to punish the man?"

"I would be shocked and angered if she did not, but you will still need to speak with her on the matter... did you come here for any other reason, or was that all you wanted of me for now?" Raynha asks, leaning against the wall of the Hall she defended in the Godswar.

You nod slowly, and respond "Fair is fair, I suppose."

She nods sagely "I am the most fair deity among the Ten. I care not how many, or whom it is that dies, I only care that they are properly returned to me. Enjoy my priestess, if that truly is your intent. However, I do believe that you have work to be seeing to on the mortal plane, so I will release you from my realm, and speak with you when we next must converse." And at that, you find yourself stirring from your meditation, the former Master of the Order of the Bloodrose staring at you, eyes far too large, and wrapped in tears, silently mouthing some placation or soothing mantra to himself.
