    “Ah, there.”

With a clank, the side door to the pod finally rolls open, the day outside greeting you with a refreshing blast of dry, parched air that wasn’t very refreshing at all.

You’d decided to forgo the idea of brute-strengthing the wheel at the top of the gate, thinking the mechanism might just as easily snap and never open, and had moved instead to tinker with the mechanics of one of the smaller pod doors- more specifically the one whose glass you’d already smashed open on the other side, still so helpfully illuminated by a different coloured light (but otherwise findable through simple cognitive exercise). It was a fiddly enterprise and you were hardly any kind of lockpicker, but the ability to polymorph freely gave you a pleasantly creative advantage in the endeavour that had now seemed to yield its fruit.

The stillness of the desert outside unnerves you a little, premonitioning the kind of disquiet you’d imagined waiting for you on your short but eventful exploration of the Hold. Caution takes a step into your heart just as you take one outsidefor a quick loo-

“-Welcome back.” Baha mumbles out from the cliff-face to your right, ignoring the little jump she got out of you, “What’s it like in there?”

“What’s it like out here?” You counter, scanning around, “Nothing unusual come a calling after I alarmed the insides?”

“Nothing I could see, but maybe, if anyone’s coming, they’re on their way...nothing we can do about that though.”

She edges her way past you, finding the process difficult in the small confines of the doorway, and out onto the balcony behind, looking over the deserted streets with a soft, almost vacant stare; blurring the panorama of evidence before her into a hazy mass of facts to tear into.

“I found a survivor,” You offer, reaching into your bag of holding, “Not a dwarf either- human and an illusionist, injur-”

“Samal?!” She whirled back, slapping the barely retrieved book out of your hand and thumbing through it, “...History of the Hold. What’s this?”

“Something he was guarding. Whole stacks of them they took from the library-” You inform, now half-jogging along with her, bounding down the steps to the lower floor, “Do you even know where you’re going?”

“The Hall Kitchen,” She replies, “Book stinks of the soot from the bakeries in it. He’s injured?”

“Yes, poison keeping him bleeding- not too bad a cut but he’ll be-“

“-I can cure it. What else did you find? I see oozes, cave trolls, hobgoblins-”

“Whoa, wait! Hold it!” You shout, hopping out infront to bar her way, “Slow down here, where’s all the cave trolls and hobgoblins coming from?”

She moves to sidestep but you block again, her hands twitching up as if wanting to move you out of the way, but refusing to carry on through with the action. Instead she sighs and thumbs behind her, motioning for you to keep up with her.

“Trolls from the claw-marks on the cages we just went past and the bite indents on the Dwarven armour- probably also what’s doing that screeching over by the...lower halls? Hobgoblins from this,” She sweeps down to pick up a shattered slice of metal from a heap of dwarvern armour, “A shard from a broken hobgoblin blade of central-western design- likely broken off within a dwarf and since revealed by digestion. Whereabouts did you get into the kitchen?”

“It’s a few minutes away, through some house,” You add, now struggling to keep ahead on the rapid pace she’d set for you, “So, the hobgoblins hit the place and brought in a clean-up crew?”

“Yes and no. All the books were like this?” She gestures.

“What do you mean ‘yes and-‘ oh and yes, pretty much all. Apparently the library was assailed by a...’crystal-thing’, and this illusionist- Samal? Well he was attacked by black-clad women with poison blades.”

“Hmm. Not much to go on there from the description...but not Hobgoblins. More mercenaries.”

    “’More’? This your ‘no’ part?”

“Yes. Hobgoblins didn’t hit the place themselves. If they were here for their interests they’d take slaves. The clean-up crew was to hide over something else we don’t know about, and more than any of that- Hobgoblins aren’t native to the continent- they have their own country past the south-western mountain ranges over a thousand miles away from us.”

    You almost groan.

“So we still don’t know who paid for or arranged the assault.”

“No. Or what they were after...beyond maybe these,” She gestures with the volume as you shift your way through the wrecked house and push out the other side of the door, “And if they still wanted these and knew some where missing, then-...”

She tugs gently on the back of your armour, stilling your progress ahead.

“...Then there’s probably still some here, looking. Did you...did you see anything odd down these tunnels?” She adds with a whisper, the doorway groaning to shut behind you.

“Not really. But I’d bugged the tunnel anyway as I went, so I’d have known if anyone’d have killed them to pass down it...unless they saw me do it and could stealth around, but that kind of stealth would be...” You ponder, as the light from the door clamps together, leaving you in near complete darkness.

But darkness enough to see the looming, milky eyes of a black-furred Kardan appear next to your partner.

“’Ey, no gettin’ stuff past you two, eh?” He smiles, then raises his voice, “GNOR, KEEP ON THE ICE, EVERYONE ELSE...WELL OUR COMPANY’S RETURNED, LADS!”

With no time to yell, you dive into Baha before the huge foe manages to bring his flail to bear, rolling along half-smashed ground before being shunted up and off your feet by a shaken Baha, already in the midst of fumbling in her pockets for her potions and flasks.

“Just keep down!” You mutter before finishing a hasty cast of one of your more strategic spells, a windless blast of fog gusting into the area to smother everyone in a thick, sightless mist.

At least, sightless for most. You, however, have a certain talent for seeing through clouds...and in the dark. Not that a little more light wouldn’t go amiss.

“SHIELDS UP LADS, THIS ‘ERE SORCEROR MEANS BUSINESS.” You see who you take to be their leader squint, now raking his flail around infront of him like a blind man’s cane, slowly making his way toward your position.

Aiming toward him you concentrate, unleashing an arc of lightning toward and straight through the furred bugbear, blazing his hair alight and making hums of confusion turn into screams of pain- a couple others behind him also being fried in the arc...but then it caught against a massive tower shield and earthed harmlessly, failing to illuminate all the way through. Over half a dozen you saw, maybe more...with magic defences. And that was your only lightning spell (to be Blue for a day...).

Using the reprieve and looking down to your side, you move to grab Baha (who had the good sense to stay silent) and trek a few feet away so as not to hold you down in a single position, but she squirms out of you gasp and gets the gist herself, keeping to the wall and blindly sidling over. Fine. Suit herself.

“Nrrgh...” The leader groaned, surprising you with his resilience, having fallen to one knee while the other two had simply died, a cloying smell of ozone and burnt fleshing steaming from him, “L-Looks like ‘e can see fine too! So even it!”

    Even it?

At once, you see even more, dozens more, emerge out of the shadows, stalking and braying, searching for you...even one right next to you. Even one moving THROUGH you. Illusions. Minor images they were throwing up, gliding through the fog to try and catch you out and conceal their true numbers. Whoever these guys are, they were well trained, that way for sure...and in the background, you could still hear the one called Gnor, smashing away at the ice while his fellows advanced toward you. This wasn’t going to be as easy as you’d hoped if it carries on like this...

    Type of Bugbear.

If they've got defenses against direct magical attack, there's no reason we can't do some more indirect stuff. Illusions, to compound the confusion that the fog creates, maybe? Sound based, probably.

Cold spells, we have those, right? Make sure to get the ones behind us, especially since I think Baha is moving forward. (Less worry of collateral damage.)
Let's attempt to further wound-but-not-kill the leader, and proceed forwards. We need to stop Gnor.

    >> Anonymous 03/16/12(Fri)21:21 No.18352444
    Plan:
Fog cloud blocks their sight, but bugbears have decently sensitive noses and ears.
Ghost sound or other sound based illusion will help conceal where we are.
Summoning an ooze mephit (which has a stinking cloud ability) will hinder their scent ability.
A glaive is a reach weapon, which we can use to poke at them from concealment within the fog.
We also have some paralyzing poison, for taking at least a few of them alive for questioning.

We can still use cold spells without disrupting the fog, they just appear to have some defenses against offensive magic so we don't know if it would just be a waste of a spell or not.

I know we're not bumping anyway at the moment but normally the more people post in the thread the more we're on the front page and might get some new people stumbling onto the thread.

Ok.So, WG said that we CAN revert, but there is not enough space to turn around. We got most of that group, but some are just wounded, and it sounds like there are more hobgoblins to the left side of the picture.
My suggestion - dont try to screw with illuzions, oozes, mephits - just go and make holes in the leader guy. Then, if illuzions do not end, blast all we can see with ice, poke with spear.

Frowning, you wait a few more seconds for Baha to sidle into a sheltered crevice before beginning your attack anew, pacing around the edge of the smouldering leader, trying to get around his back as the more solid, decidedly real block of troops continues its slow, shielded advance into the fog, forming a formation and keeping their blades out to the sides in an effort to hit-out at anything solid they might touch.

Not willing to wait for them to get to their leader, you crack off a simple sound illusion, averting the leader’s attention just long enough to spring forward unaccosted, thrusting the glaive forward and puncturing through his armour to the flesh beneath. He roars and sputters up some blood...then grips the shaft of your blade with both hands, dropping his flail by the side.

“Nrrg...il-illusions, mates. Dun’ be fooled,” He mumbles through blood bubbles, “S’stabber too- get over here nnooOW!”

And with as much wrench as was left in him he launches backwards toward his own shield-wall, forcing you to let go of the haft or go crashing into them along with him. For his trouble he sustains a minor brow-beating before they feel out who he is and absorb him back into the middle of their fold, a couple who were holding their weapons out turning in, a plethora of curses and cursed orders pulling the unit back out of the fog they were hiding in.

Opportunity leaving, you roll backwards to get as many in your scope as possible- illusion and otherwise, then unleash another blast of ice, shearing through the illusions and, to your satisfaction, catching a couple of actual Kardan’s that had mixed with them, blasting them away, but not with enough force to take them out of the fight forever. Much to your chagrin the frontal shield-wall of the main Bugbear force- now clearly six plus the leader, held firm under the onslaught, and you grit your teeth in anger- you needed to get around the sides, but they’d have backtracked out of the fog before then. Annoyingly well organized, and just a bit too luc-

“-I’M THROUGH, BOSS!” You hear another voice yell just a bit further up the tunnel, along with a last, mighty smash, “An’ it’s books like ‘e wanted! An’ a- OW! BLOODY SPRITE!!”

To your side you see Baha perk up and start hurriedly pressing herself toward the voices while keeping to the wall, a side-step just the right side of urgent to still be quiet...but with no way of being unseen once they all reach the boundary outside the fog cloud.

“’Ang on lad, our hands’re full ‘ere!” Sounded a faintly rejuvenated leader from the centre of the well-drilled bulge before calling out to the near-comatose pair you’d blasted past them, “Renke! Polg! Yer not dead yet, go ‘elp ‘im out an’ gather all the books ye can together!!”

The two slowly started moving to their feet, and with them you saw your last chance to change the course of this battle. You needed to break that formation, you needed to kill or stop that Gnor before he crushed your Mephit to crystal, and you needed to do it now!

...No choice. You’d hoped to play the part of Victor a bit longer than this, but...desperate times. You just felt the mephit shatter inside your head.

“Baha. BAHA!” You yell, stopping her in her tracks, “Come here and get behind me.”

    “But-“

    “DO IT.”

Notably suspicious the Kardan’s used the spare seconds of assumed reprieve to quickly break and reform their formation further back down the tunnel, well out of the fog-cloud, almost pressing again the door as Baha stumbled toward and behind, fear and tentative anger on her clouded face.

“I’m here, but what good does that do?! They’re going to kill him!”

“No,” You intone, moving forward, “They’re not.”

To the Kardan’s, nothing much seemed apparent at first, just loud, cracking sounds...and the keening cry of the girl they’d seen you come in with. Then they the low, growling breaths, and they fancied that- just for a moment- they saw something in the mist. Glowing. Glowering.

The captain needn’t have bothered squinting, its presence became all too clear with the grinding, blue-tinted blast of sheer cold that crushed his shieldbearers into him and blew apart the fog before them- and the two fellows either side of him.

“OH HELLS, E’S THE DRAGON!!! KEEP THE SHIELDS UP!!” The captain almost shrieked, heaving a dropped one up himself, “GNOR!! GNOR YOU BASTARD, GET OUT OF HERE!!”

“But what about the books?” You hear a very busy sounding Bugbear call out from the other room behind him.

    “FORGET- AAAH!!”

You unleash another blast and advance forward, keeping it on for longer this time, crawling through the now-cramped tunnel as best you’re able toward them, blocking them off from the one uncovered doorway. No easy exit for them.

“F-FORGET THE RUDDY BOOKS!!” The captain, screams behind his shield, bracing it with his entire body, “TAKE WHATEVER YOU CAN, BUT GET BACK!! TELL ‘EM THE DRAGON WAS HERE AND ‘E’S ONTO US!!”

Then, much to your rage-just as you pause for breath and a second before you’re in biting distance-

“I can do better than that, boss!” You see the Bugbear shout, darting out from the doorway festooned with bags of holding to leap straight over his huddled group of half-dead, nearly frozen comrades, “Y’can tell ‘im yerself!”

The was a flash from the gem about his waist...and then nothing. Vanished. All of them in the huddle, with just the four shattered and charred corpses around you any sign they were ever here. And your glaive. Morphing as you moved you leap into the open doorway and look around.

Gone. All the books. He must’ve stuffed them frantically into the bags as fast as he could. A well trained team, hiding out here, just waiting for the way to be shown to them...or for some idiot like you to come along and find it for them. And of *course* they’d be well trained...this place was a death trap.

Rubbing your face, in agitation and barely contained anger, you try and slide it to the side as you notice the illusionist laying motionless in his chair, untouched. You run over and grab him, checking him over...

    ...Yes! SOMETHING!

“BAHA, COME ON! He’s still alive!” You shout out, getting him out of the chair and onto the ground, pulling at his robes to prepare him.

    No response.

“BAHA!” You try again, resorting to simply tearing the fabric apart...then look up to the doorway expectantly.

    Still nothing.

    “...Baha?”

You stand and make your way to the doorway, staring out at the woman collapsed on her knees in the middle of the tunnel, staring straight ahead, unable to se you in the pitch-black conditions surrounding you...but knowing you can. And can see her expression...or the lack of one, rather, despite the tears. And see her lips move as she asks her question.

“...So what’s your REAL name, ‘Victor’? Unless you want to come up with some other lie to cover this?”

    ...Ah shit.

    Victor will still do.

The thing is, she has no real reason to doubt us. Sure, we may not be precisely who we said we were, but we're at least marginally competent, and are obviously on her side / not working with the bugbears.

If we happen to prefer the use of a pseudonym, well, that's how it goes. We don't have to give her a real name; whether or not she thinks 'victor' is our real name, it works as one.

we should explain that yes we are in fact a dragon. The only deception we have done is by using an alternate identity because we prefer privacy. Also we confused as heck on what the hob goblins said and maybe another dragon is somehow involved. dark vision does not convey color and hobgoblins would not know the intricacy between colors.

To sum it all up we are a dragon that has been hired out to act as your body guard. State that we don't like to casually flaunt this and that this was a dire enough circumstance that we were forced to reveal our self. We hope that you would understand and finally ask her to keep our secrete and if she can't because of her superior to at least it only know to a small group of people.

No. More likely they're working with the same people who summoned all of the out-of-place monsters that attacked the adventurers heading to the orc camp. They saw us trash the orc camp in dragon form, so they know that there is a dragon meddling with things in the region. So when we showed up and reverted, they figured it was the same dragon again.

I'm kind of annoyed that everyone and their dog seems to be running circles around us. We've been a bit of a butt monkey since we first showed up in Umbaya.

You sigh, half-shaking you head and entirely not in the mood for this kind of little ‘truth or dare’ show. Honestly, what is the problem here? You were here, this was your job, you protected her, you were here until the end...so what if Victor was not your real name? It wasn’t like she had a right to know anyway, and there were more important things to take care of, so...

    “Nevermind that, your friend-“

“-Or is that all you’re good for, lying? Lying. Lying little liar who can’t tell me his name, who’s too important to tell me his name or what his intentions are or anything else so he just walks around here happily lying to me just like how everyone lies to me and in the dark so I don’t see his lying face to tell that he’s lying but I’m a ranger now so I can’t hear it in his lying voice-“

“-I, ah, look, I never lied over my name, its j-”

“-Don’t lie TO *ME!!*” She shrieks in a tone so piercing you’re surprised the ice around you doesn’t crack, “DON’T LIE! DON’T LIE!! NOT TO ME!! NEVER TO ME!!”

The half-full vial of healing potion she’d been gripping in her hand shatters, the glass crushing and cutting between her fingers just as the salve tries to heal them up.

You begin to realize that you have just wandered into a very, very, personal minefield here.

She sucks in another breath, trying to calm her shudders, “...Just don’t...don’t lie okay? Please don’t lie. You’re my partner, right? They don’t lie. They SHOULDN’T lie. If you’re close. So tell me your name. Tell me.”

Zeta Gundam. The main character is a boy named Kamille. In the first episode, another character comments that Kamille is a girl's name, leading to Kamille running over and punching the dude in the face. This kicks off a complex chain of events that leads to Kamille becoming the pilot of the latest Gundam, and eventually alters the course of the war and indeed the entire setting.

All because a guy commented that Camille is a girl's name.

The pictured scene takes place some time later, by which point he's sort of come to terms with his name. Also, he totally wants to fuck that girl's brains out, so he's less inclined to punch her in the face anyway.

You entertain, briefly, telling her your actual name; Vikremenmirth. A notion that is very easily dismissed, given her very apparent instability- bad enough your enemies know that you exist, but there might be spies around...and you could hardly trust someone like the girl infront of you to be able to keep it a secret.

No, you decide, the best course of action here would be to try and calm her down. Reason with her. Afterall, her acquaintance, whoever he is, is still dying in the room beyond.

“Listen...” You begin as tactfully as you can, “My name- my HUMAN name, that IS Victor. Now-“

“-Nnn.” She stops you, holding a hand up.

Baha shivers, then doubles over, clutching her head before springing taught, muscles tearing themselves apart through the effort to hold something in, figers clawing to strangle air, to strangle YOU.

    “Nnn. Nmmn. NmmkkpppmmkkNNNNNN!!!”

Then, it’s like something in her just...snaps. In a single sweeping action, she brings her right hand down from her head, slicing open that side of her face from the glass embedded in it. And she looks up at you, squints to see as best she can, nose bleeding from the pressure inside her head. Her focus seems unearthly, unnatural, her pupils pinpricks even in the darkness surrounding you both. She hasn't so much gotten a hold of herself, you feel, but had surpassed the need.

“Do not-“ She points, voice harder and clearer than you ever heard it, “Do not ever talk to me again. Do not ever come near me. Do not even speak to apologise, as if you ever would.”

And with that, she walks past you to heal her friend, nonchalantly spitting out a piece of a tooth she’d cracked from clenching them so hard.

Faintly, you hear a sickeningly familiar voice in your head, sounding positively delighted.

For the next thread, some ideas that were thrown around to avoid the autosage issue:
Try to start with a different image, it might be something to do with the board thinking you're spamming because of all the previous threads starting with the same image.
Try to not have a subject line or a tripcode in the first post. Some combination of those might be causing the issue.

I honestly don't know if any of that makes any sense, but it probably won't hurt to try.
