Following the great shake-up of the volcano, some flatworems take to the air! Or at least the higher water, becoming more flexible and maneuverable above the surface of the sea floor. Their food-hole has shifted to the front of the body to suck in anything they run across (usually plankton) while their eyespots remain to avoid predation.

The underbelly is lighter colored to blend in from above.

The poisonous fus, in their dwindling numbers, begin to prey upon all forms of life, including the colony fus.

They develop tendril-like limbs to assist them. They use these limbs to grasp onto their prey, and to anchor themselves when they rest.

many colonyfus get tangled in thick algae clouds and die off. Half survive, and a quarter of them develop a acid dispersing orifice near their antennae. The acid burns through algae on contact, but doesnt harm worems or slucks. The Fus are however not totally immune, and freefus are irritated by it. Colony fus, however, get extremely fucked over by it, where it burns their membrane off (which regrows later), and messes up their antennae and echolocation for awhile.

The limp flapping fin on the armorsluck becomes more robust and braced with bony spurs that allow it to move more rapidly and with greater control.

It's fore-claws have developed into bony cutting blades, useful in hit-and-run strikes against fus and hard-shelled prey. Bladeworem prefer to weaken their food by cutting them repeatedly before going in for the killing stroke with their powerful jaws.

So Fus have become Lovecraftian nightmares, Worem have become the Zerg, and the Sluck have become drag queens.

The old, slow-breeding shieldWorem can't keep up and die off. Predators can't make a dent in the overall population.

Don't worry, they're in a kind of amphibious environment since the tidal moss are periodically submerged in water. There's still shieldWorems in the ocean, so no worries for the other races.

The floating fus' poisonous tendrils have receded into their bodies, and are almost non-existent.
The thick, squishy protective membrane has also coated the Fus' locomotive tendrils, making them much more powerful.
They are not as specialized as the grabber-tendrils, but they are now able to coil around whatever the fus sees fit.

Well since it seems everyones forgotten about the AirBorneSlucks lets give them a hand:

The AirBorne Slucks reproductive cycle changes becoming plant-like, females release spores which land on males feeding off of them like parasites until they grow to a certain size. As an offensive adaptation their harpoons harden becoming as hard as bone, allowing them to feed off of armoured prey

The sluck that have arrived on land have slighted evolved. The Fins that were on the sides of the sluck are now no articulated, as they were limp for a long period of time where the slucks didnt use them. They are now part of the slucks armoring. Also, the dorsal fin on the back of the sluck has been changing....
finally its air sac has receded into its body. However, no armor has developed over it, leaving a vital weak point.

They thrive on eating shield worems, and are sometimes attacked by colonyfus (who are slightly mobile, and living)

The paddleworm's adaptive senses only grow, increasing it's perception of the visual spectrum to that equatable to a mantis shrimp with evolved eyes. Its bio-electrical capabiltiies only further expand with its growing nervous system and expanding sensory array. Its intellect has evolved enough that its capable of establishing rudimentary schooling orders. They light up the abyss in flickering swarms and overcome larger prey in a electrocution frenzy before ravenously devouring it.

The beached colonyfus live, but not as they once did underwater. They use their tw ostrong tentacles, as well as their flagella, to slowly pull them over moss and digest it. Their stingsacs and barbs are used to ward off the armoredslucks, and their echolocation beacons are used to communicate with other colonies. Their pink digestive tendrils have curled into the underside of the colony, and fuzed with the under membrane.

The Floating Fus' navigational fins grow and strengthen, allowing Fus to propel themselves out of the water for short periods of time to escape from predators. They developed sacs filled with very light gases, that allow the fus to slowly float back to the water after they launch themselves into the air.

The AirBorne Sluck evolves again! Now its harpoons are used for feeding, sucking out the insides of its prey and using a specialized enzyme to break it down for energy, this enzyme is extremely acidic is secreted from the Slucks skin as a defensive mechanism, females also develop a third harpoon used for placing spore sacks within the bodies of its prey, the spores grow and devour the prey from the inside out bursting from the body fully matured, the prey is alive upon insertion of of the spore sac

The Bladeworem's front limbs have begun to devolve into a spiny exterior, as the creature has long since ceased grabbing its prey. In addition, it has developed a dorsal blade.

Its propulsion system becomes even more powerful, allowing it to take its first great leaps out of the water to catch low-flying prey.

I am a geology/paleontology major and I adore this thread.

Lurking airborne sluck trawls the ocean at any depth. Sharp eyes on long stalks provide precise vision. The creatures cluster of harpooons are able to extend far below it's body. The harpoons are sensitive to electric activity, and can be used as sensors as well as weapons. Spores cling to it's thick hide, suspended in thick poisonous goo.

The Floating Fus occasionally breached themselves on land with their floating. They developed significantly stronger tendrils, now much more resembling tentacles than tendrils, to pull themselves across the land and back to the ocean. The membrane surrounding their body increased in thickness and strength, and allowed for greater protection, though was still very squishy, and allowed them to survive the brunt of land dwelling predators.

Their air sacs allowed them to survive the trip back to the ocean, but does not allow for true land life. YET.

In the meantime, it's official: the BladeWorem is the first superpredator of the primordial seas. Think Anomalocaris. This meant it's on the top of the food chain! All potential prey must adapt!

The Bladeworem's uppermost blades lose their sheer bony ridge, developing into fins that allow it to glide briefly above the water. With its propulsion stronger than ever, this grants the species some considerable time in the sun, though it still requires water to survive.

As if to compensate for their loss, their other spines and blades have become sharper and more numerous.

The Flus' air sacs seperated into two lobes, each increasing in size on the inside of the body. This allowed for significant longer sustained floating, as well as a decreased need to return to water.

The increased space in between the air sacs allowed the Flus' mandibles to grow in size, and is now used more aggressively.

The poison glands of old adapted into a thing coating of the poison along the Flus' body. This poison is alkaline in nature, and neutralizes the Blade Worem's acid. Though it is now immune to the Blade Worem's acid, the Flus' soft yet rubbery hide is not a very good defense against the Blade Worem's blades and teeth. This, combined with their slow floating speed, makes the Flus a major prey for the Blade Worem.

These recent adaptations allowed the Flus to attack prey by dropping on top of it.

Due to lack of predators and high population the AirBorne Slucks brain is developing at an increased rate they have begun to organize their communities and form a primitive social system.

Their bodies have become hardened shells to protect from the few predators able to reach them in their high altitude environments. The reach of their harpoons has increased as well, allowing them to stab prey in the ocean and on land without descending from their homes

The Bladeworems grow another set of gliding-wings towards their aft-ends, and their tough carapace begins to loosen into a more flexible array of plating.

The AirBorne Slucks social structure develops more. They begin to work in groups to remove threats and deal with dangerous predators. Their brains are still expanding and growing, theirs bodies have hardened even more becoming almost unpierceable (being made out of Carbon ex. diamond, carbon fibres)

Well, I wouldn't say it's made of diamonds, but just really tough and striated. Basically, they will need a long time to kill.

Also, feel free to develop the land dwellers now! A new kind of plant has evolved, which resemble interconnected bushes. These plant types can grow further inland, and they can trap rainwater in leaf-cups.

Worem evo chart had a mistake on it: the paddleworms evolved from the flatworems, not the foldworem.

Speaking of which, the foldworems have been ignored for a while...

Bump to keep the thread alive until tonight. We need to continue this, at least until we get plenty of land-forms.

As the food chain moves away from the sea bed and toward the beach, the foldworms return to their roots. Losing their plated exoskeleton in favor of a sleeker, faster body, their undersides now sport color to blend in from underneath. Meanwhile, the vestigial filter scoops now serve a new purpose- a cluster of sensitive cells at their tips relays information to its tiny brain along with the row of eyespots along its back.

A new row of filter-slits along each side has developed next to the mouth-hole to pull in more food.

I am now monitoring this thread. Also for those who are moving towards sentience. It's pressures such as predation and competition that seem to spur intelligence. Any species we have on Earth that shows signs of cognitive ability is often a predator or some form of scavenger that has lots of active competition for food.

The paddleworem's returning trips to the shores allow it to slowly process oxygen from the air through its moist skin. In response its hide begins to also take on tougher qualities as it traverses the prehistoric marshes and swamps bridging the pseudo-amphibian's way into terrestrial territories. Its constant pursuit by advancing air and landborne predators force it to sometimes take to the depths of muddy banks. Its lack of sodium deters its bio-electric abilities, but it retains its heightened senses, staying one step ahead of predators and prey as groups of frowgworems make harmonious chirps and clicks during breeding season.

I stopped contributing to Evo Moon when it seemed like people started taking sides and trying to out-cool each other. I think that game lost a lot of focus because the players were all focused on making "their" organisms the coolest rather than responding to blind evolutionary pressures.

A small group of Fus have grown red, eye-like spots, making them look more menacing to their prey. As a result, they are slightly larger than their un-spotted cousins, but move slower as a result.

Introducing the Dragon Sluck

Evolving from the AirBorne Sluck it has lost most of its harpoons but grown in size, it also no longer secretes its toxic enzyme, instead the enzyme has become increasingly toxic and volatile, the increase in size and introduction of enzyme excreting glands has caused brain size to decrease and their reproductive cycle has changed to that of laying eggs removing the need for the spore sac harpoon, it is shrinking becoming vestigial

And the Wasp Sluck evolving from AirBorne Sluck spores placed within prey to adapt to the increasing number of prey and predators on land, they no loger excrete their toxic enzyme but still contain it for food digestion many of their legs have developed bones and become like legs, they no longer float like their AirBorne cousins but have developed large clear rounded wings, and a short stinger attached to their thorax, they have lost their social system but have developed a hive mind

You can't make an all-new creature, but you CAN specify that a segment of a population evolves into a new species, and then go from there.

The paddleworem begins to grossly deviate from its annelid ancestors. A cartilaginous structure begins the first steps into developing a genuine skeleton. Fully formed toes and red muscles fueled by an early single lung, (despite their dependance on absorbing oxygen through their skin still) develop as the paddlefrowg scuttles onto land into further inland water sources, spreading its influence far and wide. Airborne slucks compete with these landbound creatures and their wily maneuverability, maintaining a niche as one of the first genuine terrestrials, feeding on their woremy ancestors with controlled electric jolts from their roughly untouched forelimbs.

The surface shield worm develops primitive lungs to help itself survive longer on out of water and get dem tasty greens. As a result it becomes a bit larger.

It's feelers become more feathery and lighter to move in the air.

it's jaws shift slightly to help it chew these stronger plants.
