    340 KB Ask a GW Manager Anything Part 4 GWManager !6tccu/ViRM 03/29/12(Thu)00:03 No.18496506
I might be remembered from before hand, I might not as it has been almost a year since my last thread, so here is a quick summary.

Yes I am really a GW manager

No I won't tell you who I am or what store I'm from, other than I'm in the a UK based store

I'll answer every question I'm asked, if I somehow miss your question, just point it out and I'll get around to it.

Someone saved part 2 and 3 on sup tg so here are the links

    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/15125681/
    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/14356393/

My tripcode might not be the same, as I'm not sure i can remember what it originally was.

So with that in mind, have at it, it's 5am in the morning here, my neighbor have woken me up and I can't get back to sleep. What do you want to know?

How do you guys compete and stay open?

I don't know about how it works in the UK. But in Amerifat Michigan, all the third party gaming stores sell 40k stuff on average of 10-20% off sticker price.
    >> Anonymous 03/29/12(Thu)00:08 No.18496584
ok i believe you, and im going to ask you some questions. I hope i don't come off as a complaining fan.

Honestly, how do you expect people to pay for the models?

Do you think the price is the reason that 40k/WHFB failed here in america?

How do you feel about the fluff of 40k? Did you think it was cooler 'back in the day'?

Which tabletop games/RPGs do you play? Any Non-GW?
    >> GWManager !6tccu/ViRM 03/29/12(Thu)00:08 No.18496590
I thought I might just say, that if you are curious, I think I was fairly spot on with my release schedule that I gave you guys in the previous threads, the only two that were massively wrong was the summer of flyers turning out to be the vampire 2nd wave (which took all of us by surprise) and blood bowl turning out to be dreadfleet (which took most of us by surprise except one certain member of staff who told us all to suck it as he had said that it would be a ship based game not blood bowl)

Now in reference to those two releases, the summer of flyers is a mystery to me, no idea where that went and now I even question it's existence in the first place, it could have easily been someone seeing the dark eldar flyer and reading the internet buzz about flying expansions or it could have been just a lie, who knows?

Blood bowl on the other hand I do know about, it exists, a pitch has been seen as well as new teams for all the races, but this won't be out till September/October 2013 at the earliest.

I honestly don't know much about the american business, I know that they sent Tom Kirby to try and sort it out and he only recently came back from the US (I say recently, i mean more in the last year).

America is a huge unknown to GW, as indy stores had such a huge head start before GW came along, remember that in the UK and to be honest almost anywhere else, GW was the first store of it's kind. It was the first store in the UK to sell DnD (which is the one of the main roots of it's success)

What I can tell you is that the UK retail business is in financial growth for the first time in like 5 years, so we are actually starting to make more money, whether UK trade and UK direct are in growth is another question, but I'd be surprised if they aren't.

My personal oppinion is that in the US land is cheap as chips, brick and mortor stores aren't as much as a fincial sink as they are in the UK and thus you have more, also more space means more stock so indipendant stores can afford to have on show anything they want from GW to PP to comics and boardgames. In the UK, there just aren't those kinds of stores as they aren't really viable financially.

    Hope that answers your question

When will the Necron wave 2 models come out?

Also why are the majority of GW employees fat fucking assholes?
    >> GWManager !6tccu/ViRM 03/29/12(Thu)00:17 No.18496708
just to add to that, because of this, there aren't that many indy stores, therefore not that many people are aware of the fact that they can buy GW stuff cheaper else where.

Personally i also don';t think most Indy stores can offer the same level of support, help most GW stores offer.

Also, a lot of our money comes from new people in the hobby, statistically you spend more money in your first two years in the hobby then at any time and as most indy stores dont recuite new people into the hobby and most GW stores FOCUS on that, you can see where some of our money comes from

Here is the release skedule as I know it

    April - Empire (obviously)
    May - Necron 2nd wave
June - Tau (although this could be Dark Angels or even chaos) my money is on tau,
    July - 6th ed
August - Dark Angels (or tau or chaos) again my money is on DA
September - Box set for 6th ed, DA & Black legion. Apparantly the Black legion side has chaos cultists that are fantastic models, think sea guard and sword masters but with 2 years more experiance on top
October - Chaos (or dark angels or tau)
    November - The Hobbit
    December - ?

the hobbit release is odd though as I have had people tell me January

Oh and to the comment about most employees being fat arseholes, the reason is that GW recruits from it's customer base and considering that 50% are fat arseholes, statistically that would mean that at least 50% of the staff will be as well.
    >> Anonymous 03/29/12(Thu)00:22 No.18496788
Any idea as to when 6th ed of 40k comes? If so, any major rule changes we should know about?

Is dark angels vs chaos the starter box set?

Know anything about upcoming releases model-wise...

    >Honestly, how do you expect people to pay for the models?

A job? No in all seriousness, I'm not sure mate, a few years back I would have told you to shut up and look at any other hobby as they're all expensive. Now I can understand more those types of comments, it has gotten a LOT more expensive, not crazy expensive, again look at any other hobby. Golf is expensive as fuck so is airsoft etc, but yeah it's not a cheap hobby, especially if you find yourself in Australia then christ knows how you afford it.

Do you think the price is the reason that 40k/WHFB failed here in america?

It hasnt failed, not in the slightest, not as sucessfull sure. But the american business still works well and for a while was one of the more profitable parts of GW. The internet gives you a very warped view of GW's sucess or failure, just because a few people loudly shout that no one plays 40k or whfb anymore doesn't mean it's true. I will say though that I was shocked to hear Ard Boys was cancelled as that was a major thing for the US tourny scene.

How do you feel about the fluff of 40k? Did you think it was cooler 'back in the day'?

Oh I love the fluff (it's the one area of the business I have very little to gripe about) I think most of what they do is fantastic. My biggest compaint is that there needs to be far more communication between those who write codexs and those who write books. For fuck sake Uriel Ventris has been camptain of the 4th company of Ultramarines for like fucking 5 years, he needs to be credited in a codex at some damn point!

Which tabletop games/RPGs do you play? Any Non-GW?

I play a lot of random board games, like runequest or zombies or anything by FF games, but in terms of other war games, I'm more of a background person and painter than avid gamer tbh

Yes I have heard/scene them, nope not a clue if they have thought about them in real depth and honestly why would they?

You are talking about something that at the moment is far out of reach for most people and between now and the point this changes a WHOLE load of stuff could change. Just look at internet piracy and the way the US shut down megaupload, (this is off topic) we (the world, not just GW) are about to see a new era in internet legislation

from employee contracts having entire sections devoted to what they can and can't say on social networking sites, to whether or not what we say and do on the net should be monitered.

There is NO need from a business stand point to start planning for 3D printing,
    >> Anonymous 03/29/12(Thu)00:33 No.18496930
Ok ok, Im really late and have almost no time to spend at the pc right now, so hear my story: I have always been a big fan of WH40k but where I live there is almost no stores and/or the market to make the game grow. However I plan to start playing the tabletop by the middle of this year, for I have two really good work propositions in two prestigious labs around europe: one is in Belgium and the other one is on the Netherlands. So... do you know anything about how the tabletop game goes on these countries? Prices, community, stores, availability of everything game-related... anything helps.
    Thank you in advance

I already answered this pretty much, but other than knowing that there are chaos cultists in the box and that it's DA vs BL not a clue mate.

I terms of rules, again not a clue, I can tell you that the leaked rules were fake. We were all told about that via e-mail, it's only when GW pretend to not know about something being leaked that you know its true, like when a month or two ago that ebay auction occcured with the brand new paints, not a peep by head office, but a week after the leaked rules apeared we were all told to chill as they were fake and not written by someone from the studio.

You will, but not until they get a proper codex and when that is, fuck knows. not in 2012 that's for sure.

    >>18496846

Not a clue about that officially, I can comment on what I see in terms of the customers who visit GW stores in the UK. It also depends on what age you consider a child, but if we say anyone under the age of 18 a child for the moment I'll try and expand.

So it terms of the store I reckon it's about 50:50 for customer count, as in 50% of my customers are under 18 and 50% of my customers are over 18. In terms of cash in my till I'd say it's probably 75:25, with 75% of my money made from hobbyist who are under 18 (in most cases the money comes from their parents, but you know what i mean) and 25% coming from over 18.

Now one could say this is due to GW focusing on younger people and not older people hence the money ratio, but if you can trust me on this one that just isn;t the case.

I will expand on this after I go and make myself a cup of tea, smoke a fag and empty my old man bladder.

keep asking questions and I'll get to them when i can, also as a side note I appreciate no one calling me a souless cunt yet, which is always a nice thing.

I'd like to bet on that one, but hey, internet.

The cheapest you can afford a new 3d printer now is somewhere around a 1000€, which compared to some hobbies, ie buying paints and models for one huge 40k army, is rather cheap. You really think that GW isn't aware of this and just hopes that legislation will make it so hard for consumers to find products the easier way, that GW can just ignore a whole revolution in personal manufacturing?

Much appreciated GW-sir. Your work is honorable and worthwhile.
    >> GWManager !6tccu/ViRM 03/29/12(Thu)00:54 No.18497146
continuing on from where i stopped

as I said before statistically you spend more money in the first 2 yeasr (might just be the first) then you do at any other point by a long way, due in part to the start up costs of getting paints and tools, the mistakes everyone makes with their first army and also the fact that you have yet to become jaded (as you do with anything mind you).

So partialy because of that the stores at set up for recruitment to maximise on this, the other reason we're set up to recruit is because, and this might come as a shock to most of you, the retail arm of GW is really actually it's marketing department.

You see we've yet to find a better way of marketing the hobby (and yes it has been tried) than simple word of mouth and by actually getting someone in the store and trying it out.

This is the real essence of a gw store, is to bring fresh blood into the hobby and in general its young people that are the majority of our recruits because if you're not interested in taking part as a kid, most of the time that won;t change as you become an adult.

Hence the majority money coming from kids, now of course there are other factors, but I'm not inclined to spend hours typing away as to the other varied smaller reasons, but I hope that answers your question
    >> Anonymous 03/29/12(Thu)00:57 No.18497172
    >>18497027
Thanks for the answer dude. I always assume that there's more kids than adults playing, but you wouldn't know that from a lot of what you see on /tg/. Seems like there might be a higher proportion of adults playing in the USA, maybe because they've had D&D and that kind of thing for longer...

The thing about how much money is spent makes total sense. It gets hard to justify that kind of expenditure.

    >>18497172

As a throw away statistic, I rekon in general, the gaming community is split 75% 25% adult child.

As a responce though, I always find people's ideas on money spent on the hobby fascinating. You can see people spend hundreds and hundreds on new i-pods, new laptops, new video games, nights out with the lads, restaurants and not blink an eye. But tell them they need to spend 400-500 on a great looking and awesome performing imperial guard army and some times they act like I've just told them I fucked their mum in the ass and then she sucked me dry.

It's just the value YOU put on the hobby and YOU put on other things. Like I said before I do think it's starting to get quite expensive, but honestly what isn't? Christ I remember 1 quid being able to buy me three chocolate bars, now I can buy one and have almost enough to buy a second.

What do I enjoy about the job?

Well, okay so obviously I love the hobby, so working with it is better than say working with cars which i know fuck all about and care even less about.

I also love watching the kids in the store grow up into cool adults and in some occasions grown up with my help into someone better than the person they looked like they were turning into.

I also love it when i get to introduce a Dad and his kid into the hobby and watch the look in the Dad's eye when he realises that this is something he can actually do with his kid and that he might finally have something in common with.

    What do I hate?

    - humans and working in retail means i meet a lot of them, and fuck me they are just awful.
    - whiny vets who couldn't tie their shoe lace, but tell me how they could run the company better
    - parents who leave their kid in the store like it's daycare
    - anyone from headoffice
    - most of my colleagues
    - kids who are 10 but act like their 34
    - targets
    - over time I'm never paid for
    - parents who abuse their kids
    - one particular father who beat his wife half to death in front of their kid
    - the internet mostly as well.

I honestly wish I understood that

I do have to say though I don't think it's ALL GW's fault, from what I've heard from my mates in Australia, the import taxes on anything being shipped into an Australian harbour are fucking out of this world expensive which makes things worse clearly, but at the same time I also know that GW don't decrease prices, and I can imagine their reasoning could be as crap as 'well they paid this before, so why can't they continue to pay?' Although THAT is entirely speculation.

Otherwords, sorry guys, you are fucked and I haven't a clue as to why.

I do have to say though that I do understand GW stopping EU based indy companies selling to you guys as it was killing ANY Australian based stores, be they GW or indipendant and THAT is bad for the hobby in australia as you would have no one recruiting fresh hobby blood

Depends on the tournament. GW stores will refuse you flat out (see GWManager's subway analogy). Most independent tournament's will be okay with it as long as your m113's have similar dimensions to an official rhino. It seems trivial but it actually affects gameplay significantly. Smaller rhinos are easier to hide, larger rhinos are easier to block with. Your best bet is to check with the person/people organizing the tournament.

Sorry to hijack, GWManager, but hopefully anon could use the info. May I ask, how often do you actually see people play LoTR in your store?

THQ at least has published decent 40k games in the past... too bad relic isn't involved, but Darksiders apparently wasn't the worst piece of shit ever made, so there's hope.

Besides, GW is arrogant as fuck if they thought their second-best intellectual property would be able to take on Blizzard's first-best in an arena they already fully control.

Fantasy always plays second fiddle to 40k. If they want to dislodge WoW, it's gonna take a 40k haymaker. And not a sloppy one, either.

So here is the long explanation behind why firstly not all things are plastic and secondly why not all the units are made.

    1) Plastics

To make a plastic mold they first have to skulpt it, either using a three up model (that is a model that is three times bigger in scale than the final product), or using 3d modelling software or a combination of both.

This is then scanned into a computer which then sees if the model they have sculpted will work when turned into a mold or if they will be random holes etc from where plastic has been unable to flow properly. (for example I heard that they were at one point having serious issues with making plastic sisters of battle due to the over hang between their hair and the face and that they either scrapped the models or had to do a lot of work on them.

Once that is scanned and checked they then shoot fricken lazer beams into liquid red resin and out pops the model at the right scale, they they check that out, work out how to cut it up etc for the kit. This is the stage you saw when the daemon prince and seeker kit was shown in the morning at UK GW a few years back.

They then digitally design the plastic mold and then create it using fuck off expensive and huge machines which finally produce a fucking massive metal mold that can't be moved by human hand.

this is then used to pump out plastic kits at next to no cost.

Unfortunatly the cost of that one mold can be anything from 27,000 (ork storm boyz) to 500,000 (baneblade).

So the actual cost of a kit is not the materials to make the kit (the plastic and the cardboard for the box) but actually paying off the mold and of course all the R&D etc that went into it. Therefore when dealing with models that are slow sellers due to either the armies lack of players or that unit being something few people will have, they can't afford to make it in plastic.

    Does that make sense?

Maybe drop the attitude a bit and think before you speak?

Hive Guard are 3 per 1 Elites Choice. An Elites Choice with other great options. So at most you'll probably only see 2 Elites Choices worth of Hive Guard. That's SIX models per army max. If you use 9, you're kinda dumb.

    2) Not all units are made

Now this is changing as seen by the Ogre book, which doesn't have a single unit or character missing and i imagine the upcoming Empire book.

    The original reason is this,

in terms of a business, it is a bad idea to throw everything into one month and nothing into the others, the reason is that as a business you want steady consistant growth, not spiky growth as that worries investers.

You see if you put all your awesome releases in one year and then the next you dont have quite so many, they market wont understand that, it'll simply see you make say 24% growth in that first year and then see you make negative 20% the following year, they won;t care if that 2nd year was still more money that the year before the previous year.

So to combat this, GW needs to evenly spread it's releases, so as to not over balance a month or in fact a finacial year, but at the same time didnt want to hinder their creative team by forcing them to only make a few new units/characters.

Now tho, due mainly to chapterhouse studios, they can't risk that anymore, so instead they will either release books with few new units OR books with new units/characters without any real description or picture (as seen in the necron book) so that there isn;t a risk of someone stealing their ideas and using them to make models before GW releases them.

hope that explains some stuff, if you want more clarity ask for it, i think i've answered a few different posts with this one and the last, if you feel that I havent and I havent responded to your question for a while, repost your question and I'll answer it.

Now a LOT of this comes third even fourth hand, so I could be wrong on a lot of this, buuuuut.

GW sued Blizzard over warcraft and starcraft as you'd have to be a retard to not see how much of a rip of both these games are of WHFB and 40k. If i'm correct i think GW's orks were the first to even be green!

Anyway, the story goes that when we won (because again, you would be retarded to not see the blatant rip off) blizzard offered a deal (maybe they settled out of court come to think of it) anyway, when they made the deal they offered either a lump sum of cash OR a percentage of royalties to their up and coming MMO world of warcraft. Well GW not knowing a) how big WoW would be or b) how craptastic the whole warhammer online would (which is another story in itself) said no to the royalties as warcraft was far more unknown before wow came out and they thought their MMO would be bigger. So we got the cash, 11 million WoW players later we all cry :(

For the other guy, yes it is arrogance on GWs part, but also like I said, WoW came out of left field, for everyone, i mean look at everquest, it was a giant in the MMO scene before WoW came out, but even at it's height it never reached the levels WoW did even in it's first year. So you can;t berate them THAT much.

new question: to your knowledge, has GW ever been sued by any of the countless writers, artists, or authors whose works provided "inspiration" for 40k and WHFB? Judge Dredd and Nemesis the Warlock from 2000 AD spring immediately to mind, as well as Michael Moorcock and Tolkien. i know Pat Mills ended up actually doing some work for GW at a later point, is that GW's secret? hiring the people they er...borrowed...from in order to muddy the legal waters?

    i'm sorry

Apart from the obvious cash cow that Australia is, why the fuck are you just upping the prices in your most lucrative market? Wouldn't you decrease the amount to ensure more movement of stock and then have a steadier fan base when the economy eventually slows?

well I mean, they had to have at least talked about it before right? Starcraft came out in '98, Space Marines, Zerg, and all (Protoss were pretty original honestly, not really eldar analogies, physically)

Someone must have said something to someone.

And Warcraft was back in 94, but everyone was ripping off Tolken so, you know, orcs and elves and shit are really trademarkable.

I'm not sure, a mixture of tradition, and sales
From 2nd ed when the first codexs came out there were 3 marine books, one Angels of Death had both Dark Angels and Blood Angels in them. I agree that we should have less codex's for the marines, you could easily put both dark angels and black templars in with the space marine codex, but as a business idea that would be shit as it would just piss off people and not help generate any more sales, perhaps even reduce them.

being more specific on nids, if you heard they're fixing assaulting into cover with grenades, then great? I honestly can't give you any more info for them as I just don't know. I would be VERY surprised if that book was written with 6th edition in mind considering that it was the 4th codex made for 5th edition, with another 4 codexs coming out since then.

Alright, so im a GW employee (not saying where), and my manager is a complete arse. He never does the 10 comms (ive seen him do an i-game once in the year ive worked for the company, the rest of the time he shifts it off to other staff, even if we're busy with 5 other customers), he is rude to customers, completely ignores comm 5, pressures customers to buy product they dont want, closes the store every hour or so for a ciggie break, all the customers dislike him (we have people avoiding the store on days he works), and all the staff ive talked to who have worked there for the last 5 years cant stand the man. The worst part is, he's made friends with the other managers, as well as the regional manager for western australia/new zealand, so the other staff and i arent sure what to do or where to go, as all our complaints will be brushed off.

My question is, is there anything you recomend to do in this situation? And to top it all off, he is very trigger finger happy to fire people, so we also fear for our jobs if we do say something.

Probably most of you could answer this, is there any particular reason why the guy on the right wouldn't get made into a marine? Would they be enhanced in other ways? like to extend their lives?

Are guardsmen expendable in the fluff? or can they reach high status?

Sorry for the newbie questions, I recently got really into reading the lexicanum wiki, but it can be hard to track down specific stuff as there is just so much info

I don't think there's an age limit on becoming a marine, but the success rate of the operation goes down exponentially after your teen years.

Our right or stage right? Our right is probably a Guard commander; he's too old to marinify (must be pubescent). Stage right is an Ultramarine. Normal humans (wealthy ones) can get "rejuvenat" treatments, which retard the aging process and allow them to live for centuries.

Guard can reach higher status, although it depends on the regiment and culture. There IS a military aristocracy in the Imperium, so there is a very high barrier to entry

Finecast, yeah I thought I should make some comments, on that so I'll fully explain it here as best I can.

firstly the reasons behind why GW went with finecast are as follows (there might be others i'm unaware of, but i doubt they are as important)

Firstly (and i think the most important one) The cost of Metal was, is and will skyrocket. Seriously, go have a look and you'll see that all metal is getting more expensive as people start to freak about the amount of natural resources the world has vs the amount we use and continue to use (personally they're worrying a a few hundred years early, but thats humans and the global market for you) You'll notice that all minature companies are moving to resin and that almost all of them have had recent price rises in their metal stock. I'm looking at you mantic (bunch of wankers) and you PP (lovely people, but did originally sell their game on the idea that the models would always be metal).

So yeah, can't use metal really anymore for models and as i explained before can't make everything plastic. Hence, resin and finecast.

Anybody over the age of about 16 has a very slim chance of surviving the gene "enhancement" process. Not only do they remove some organs, they install duplicates, or improvements of others. After all that the Black Carapace is grafted onto your Skeletal and Nervous systems. So yeah, if you're an adult, it's fucking lethal.

    2) Quality
Resin can produce nicer looking models with more dynamic poses (e.g mangler squigs)

Personally when it comes to finecast, I love the detail, but hate the miscasts, if there is a single problem with any finecast model i buy, i exchange it and I tell everyone else to do the same. You can simply walk into a store, tell them it's misscast and they'll replace it.

Do i hate the miscasts, yup, pisses me off, i'm a perfectionist and I can't stand having miscasts. I honestly don't know why there are so many quality issues or what they're doing about it. Some times I think, yes recent models do miscast less and then up pops the last release and suddenly tons of space wolf lords on thunderwold and arjacs are miscast.

It's a fucking mystery, it pisses me off, but nothing I can do (as a hobbyists and in fact as an employee) other than buy them, and exchange them until I get one I'm happy with.

Anything I've missed feel free to ask me more on finecast

Your other question is a difficult one, as I can answer part of it without speculating and the other half with just pure speculation and personal oppinion.

Do i know if we've been sued for IP theft? Nope if we have been I havent been told.

How does GW get away with IP theft? Umm, it doesn't? Because nothing they have used as inspiration has been used to the extent that it could be considered IP theft? Unless you know something I don't, which very well be the case, there isn;t anything large that we've stolen, anything that could be seen as stolen would be probably quite minor or different enough to make it legally difficult to prove.

Does that help? I feel like by the tone of your question and the way in which you phrased it you wanted an answer like 'We murder their fucking kittens and if they don;t have kittens, we buy them kittens, let them fall in love with the kitten and then fucking stomp it to death' If thats what you wanted then, umm yeah there we go, kitten death is how 'we' get away with it....

Firstly 'why the fuck are 'we' raising our prices'?
we did fuck all, we (being my wife and me) have fuck and all to pricing the product that I sell in order to earn a wage.

Secondly, not a clue. But like I said, the UK business is doing good this year, so it must be working? I honestly would LOVE to see the math behind it all, or to see the tank filled with manatees that they use to make decisions. I just don't know, I really don't. Some things I understand, something I don't and that's partially to due to me not being knowledgeable enough to understand it all and part of it being well because it's fucking voodoo

In conclusion, I don't know what the reasons behind the pricing, maybe if i did i would agree with them, maybe I wouldn't. What i DO know is that there are thousands of people who THINK they know what GW should do and 99% are so fucking wrong you'd think they were legally retarded.

can you shed any light on the specifics of GW's license with LotR? is their license with the Tolkien Estate itself, or with New Line Cinema?

    also:
-can GW cross-market its own products along with the ones it makes under the LotR license, or not?

-can LotR models be used, in whole or in part, in non-LotR GW tourneys, such as WHFB?

-is it true that GW cannot "officially" suggest that players use LotR models or bits in non-LotR conversions?

Now most of this should be more spot on, but like I said, as I'm not John Gillard the head of IP (who btw is an incompitant asshat who got himself fired sideways into his current position for being mega ultra crazy shit at his job as head of sales for the UK) I can't be 100% on everything.

So, the current deal with newline was to renew our previous contract and to add extras in, such as the hobbit. But it's important to know that it's a contract with NEW LINE not the tolkein estate nor is it actually exclusively for just Lord of the Rings. We get special permission by the tolkein estate to expand on things, such as naming ALL the ring wraiths, but thats seperate and I don't beleive money exchanged hands in that.

If i'm correct, we can not cross market 40k & whfb with a anything to do with new line. So in essence we couldn't advertise new LOTR elf units as something to go with your high elf army.

Nor can we officially suggest using conversion bits/models/units from LOTR with whfb or 40k.

You can use whatever you want from LOTR with your 40k/fantasy army in official tourmanents unless their are more specific rules on proxing units.

What I also know is this:

The new contract with new line was the instigator for the sudden shut down on info leaving the design studio and why the current release announcements are so shortly done before the actual release as New Line didn't want to risk anything to do with the hobbit getting out before they wanted it.

Also apparently the previous contract was responsible for the sudden lack of any sales as New Line didn't want to cheapen their IP nor let GW use sales to promote 40K/WHFB off the back of LOTR fans newly introduced to the hobby.

tell them what you want from the hobby, what you want from them, how you would like to start and of course ask them for their opinion on anything you like. "This is Timmy, mighty vanquisher of foes, terror of the wastelands, the sword of the day and the torch of the night, conqueror of.."
"Dude, he is like ten years old."
"There might have been some exaggeration."

Not necessarily true. For some chapters a Neophyte will remain in the indoc phase for some 20 years. This means that before he can wear his Chapter's Power Armor a Neophyte will have to do some pretty crazy Hercules shit. I think some Chapters make Neophytes slay a Kraken like beast, others make them follow Astartes into battle like squires. All before they're deemed worthy of the Black Carapace and title of Astartes.

For some chapters (Space Wolves spring to mind) said ten year olds will be hardened warriors because that's how life is on those planets.

Sure it is not absolute, nothing is in 40K.

Leman Russ had his entire court volunteer for the process and half of them survived.

Unless Leman Russ` court had a very large percentage made up of young schoolchildren that means that grownups can survive the process too.

Problem is when they try to play up the grimdark by making the recruits younger and younger.

In a decade we will have vicious toddlers swarming their foes and gnawing their ankles off as a part of their attempt to qualify for the Space Marines.

Not sure if you're asleep at your keyboard yet (I almost am). Black Templars and Eldar really stand out for me background-wise. At this stage I'm mostly just interested in learning the painting and modelling side of the hobby because I'm not in a position to regularly play it.

People give the GW employees a lot of shit, but there are bad and good people in every part of life and I would kill to live near your store. It sounds like one I wouldn't mind supporting.

Well the same can be said of Lorgar's mentor and Luther of Caliban. They were too old for the full initiation so they became pseudo marines. Men that could still wear Terminator Armor but were really only given an extra few centuries to live and a handful of extra organs to keep them up to Astartes fighting strength.

Firstly, i just want to say that it's not wierd that you find it awkward in a gw store as it can be, it's an odd relationship between gw staff members and customers.

It also a very good question as to how I want people to behave in my store, so firstly I'll answer that and then I'll respond more specifically to your question.

If you were to walk into my house, look at my shit and then respond to me 'sorry mate, I'm just looking' I'd fucking smack you in the fucking teeth. I spend more time awake in my store than I do in my home, in fact thats true for anyone with a job based outside their house. So please remember that it may be a store to you, but to be it's like my home. If I talk to you, be polite and fucking answer, don't just politely tell me to fuck off because we're not stupid, we know you've just told us to fuck off.

thats not to say that you have to spend your time talking to us, but be polite, answer a question or two, then if you want, tell us that you just want to look quietly for something and that if you need us you'll ask. If we push past that point, then turn round and actually tell us to fuck off, but at least give us a bit of human conversation to begin with.

Personally my favorite customer is someone who comes in, is friendly (but not too scary friendly) who tells me what he wants from being in the store, engages with me in conversation and doesn't call me a cunt.
    >> GWManager !6tccu/ViRM 03/29/12(Thu)04:03 No.18498970
For you, walk in, say Hi, tell them what you're doing here, even if it's 'hey guys, i just wanted to look at x.y.z is that alright?" and then just go from there, if they ask you some shit, answer, if you get bored tell them that you just want to browse/look at something quietly and that if you need them, you'll give them a shout, but thanks for the help/advice/conversation.

    Does that help?

    >hobbies are expensive
    Uh...no?

    Reading is cheap.

All sports are practically free (buy one basket ball, play with it for the rest of your life).

Poker and other card games? Buy one deck of cards, you are done.

Even MTG is just buy one deck, and you can play with it. Sure, you might not get an optimized deck, but its relatively cheap and hassle free to get into. You can buy a deck and sit down to play right there. You cant even play GW games till you spend hundreds of hours painting and assembling.

Battletech? Play on megamek, free. Tabletop version isnt as expensive or time consuming.

The only "hobbies" that are expensive are shit like golf where you have to pay everytime you want to play or requires insane startup costs.

Are you being contrary for the sake of it? If not, and you're genuinely complaining about the cost of GW as opposed to playing basketball... you've chosen a hobby which involves collecting, assembling and painting stuff. Yes, the fact that it's based around the accumulation of stuff means that it's more expensive than many hobbies that aren't. But that shouldn't be a surprise.

yes that is exactly why you don't see official conversions for 40k/whfb using LOTR parts.

In answer to getting the best deal for you in australia. Not a clue mate, sorry, have any friends family in the EU who would buy it and ship it to you? Otherwise, go support your local store, be it GW or indy. brick and morter stores need your love!
    >>18498929
Firstly, thats lovely of you to say, secondly, black templars or eldar. Hmm good armies and a hard choice, eldar are a harder army to plaint as there is more detail, on the other hand black is a bitch to paint well.

Here's my personal oppinion, go black templars, space marines are an easier first army for gaming and for painting. In terms of painting their black armor go for this (excuse me, I'll have to use the old names as I can't remember the new ones)

    Undercoat black

    dry brush adeptus battlegrey everywhere

lighter dry brush of codex grey, not worrying about covering everywhere like the inside of the legs

even lighter dry brush of fortress grey, only going for areas that the light would obviously hit.

The give it a wash of badab black
    let it dry
is it still mostly too grey?
give it another wash of badab black

and then BAM! Great looking black armor without worrying about doing line highlighting

Write that down, tell the GW store you were advised this by another gw manager and that you wanted to try this out on an intro model as you're brand new to the hobby.

Specifically, you can spend $12 (or is it 15? I can't remember) on an intro pack, a pretty bad deck and a booster, or $25 on a good premade 75-card deck. If your friend doesn't have a deck either, $20 gets you a Duel Decks, two decent decks made to play each other.
    >play on megamek for free
Also, MTG has Cockatrice for free.

The issue here isn't so much that GW is more expensive, it's that the baseline amount that you need to spend is much higher.

For M:tG, you can "play" for like a tenner per person on cheap decks and even enter casual tournaments like FNM with a £20 Intro deck and not get _completely_ outclassed whereas WHFB/40K require you to spend something like ten times as much to get a pick up game.

Of course, once you have a, say, 2000pt army you could probably use it for a good five years and manage quite well, whereas with M:tG you need to change things to keep up with Standard, the metagame and/or B&R changes. That's also getting into the fact that Magic is inherintly more competitive and more conductive for a competitive environment than GW games are.

I think I remember seeing a study once that showed people spend roughly the same amount of money on their hobbies each month regardless of what the hobbies are. For example, a 40k player might spend £50 a month on Space Marines whereas a Magic player will go to £50 worth of drafts and a football enthusiast will spend £50 on tickets to matches etc.
