Fast-forward: Wendy, fragmenting over the wild idea someone's trying to kill her. We meet at a Friskie's, where my citizenship gives me access to the full menu and sovereign ground to catch my breath.

A killer with a gun, storming the Friskie's, almost killing us both. His partner, trying to get Wendy into the street beyond the reach of corporate rule.

Me with the shooter's gun, standing over the body, finding a disk, running out the door with Wendy's hand in mine.

Last night. After the fight, after I brought Wendy to BB's shop until we could figure out what the fuck was exploding around our ears, after BB went to bed. Was it gratitude? Or just the adrenaline, the natural adrenaline her body was pumping into her brain as bullets were flying? Who sent that gun at us? Was it retribution for the dead kid that Wendy worked on? And why did Wendy come to me and not some roid?

"You're not gonna try cracking that with your old rig, are you?" Wendy's catsuit as she stretches reminds me why I ended the night on the floor of a machine shop. "At least take it to someone with a respectable rig to run it on."

The Friskie's shooting made the news, but thanks to Wendy's emp there's no proof we had anything to do with it. Too bad that doesn't get rid of the body. There's a nice full-angle pic of Wendy's would-be kidnapper laid out where I left him. Wait a minute. Body. Singular. There's nothing on his friend. That means the guy I hit with the coffee wasn't taken in. Or he was and they're keeping it quiet.

"I upgraded your reader, for starters. Cleaned up a few connections that've been optimized since they were laid out in your model. You should be able to handle a higher overflow now."

"Thanks" I remember to say, looking back up at her. She gives me a look again, that says a lot of things, none of them helping.

I take the disk back out and click it into place. There's no way my fingers or eyes can dance fast enough to keep up with the encryption on here. I have to go back in.

Shit. My signature immediately pings two lurking bots on the outer fringe of the disk, both of them packing Rem.

Ever since Rem leaked its way out of wherever-the-fuck it came from it's made things a lot more interesting on the Net. Some people say it came out of a spook lab, some black-ops project the New American Republic or the Payless-Domino's cartel came up with. Personally I think it was done by some psychotic purely for fun.

What it does is gets into your brain and blots out chunks of it. Memory, motor skills, who knows. It removes pieces at random, sends precision impulses that cause seizures, blood clots, all kinds of things. It's brain surgery from three thousand kilometers away.

There are three ways to deal with it. Turn around and leave, which is the sensible approach. You can try and delete whatever's hosting it, but that's dicey. You can try to bypass it too, but it's nearly impossible with one, and trying it with two in the room leaves me open to a free lob.

I have a malleable RAM program called Front Toward Enemy. It's a great piece of code that can pick apart weaknesses and keep harassing a bot or a signature guard past the point their reader or header is able to keep up with. It disassembles them like a cat in a microwave.

The icons flicker, bits coming back with the wrong palette or a completely different output. At one point I hear a high-pitched sound like a bird chirping coming from bot number one, but the cycle ends and they retaliate before I can pull away!

I wait, rooted in this spot like I've been for the last hour, waiting for the light to fade. The things we might need to do have no place in the sun.

"You know what we need." Wendy's voice is terse. She's mad at me for cutting her out on the disk. I think she was enjoying feeling like part of a team. But that's not how it's gonna be. I do things my way.

But she's right. We need information. Talking to Yuji just left me with more questions. Why did he want me to come to him with my meatbod so desperately? It wasn't just extortion, otherwise he wouldn't have paid me the thirty thousand Eastern Canada dollars so easily. If not extortion, what? Was he really trying to help me somehow?

"You know where we can get it. She knows everything."

    Don't say her name.

Laudine. An icicle in human form. Laudine, queen bee of the rumor mill, with her fingers on every transmission and her ears in every lounge. Yuji has men who will kill you but he's small-time compared to Laudine. I hate hearing her name, I hate the thought that I might have to skulk into the light and let myself get pinned down like a bug. I stay with the have-nots out of choice- people who run with the rich tend to live very short lives. Better to stay in the shadows, hope they never have reason to notice you.

One thing's clear. We can't stay in BB's shop forever. Somewhere out there are people trying to kill Wendy, kill me, probably BB too, for giving us a place to go to ground.

My jaw tightens on its own at the thought of dragging myself in front of Laudine. She has more money than God, extorted and invested and showered with by people like me, people who need to know something before it kills them.

I imagine coming to her with a cardful of Frankbucks. Her laughing, that musical disdainful sound, the most jaded woman on the planet.

No, money's nothing to her. She'll want something else. And the worst part is you never know what it is she wants. It could be a job, an appearance, a courier run, whatever. Probably not a hit - she doesn't need to get her hands dirty when she can just throw you to the wolves.

If so, then Wendy should remain in a safe location. We don't want our client and our squeeze in more peril than she already is.

On that note with Wendy, we should cheer her up a bit and find something for her to do in the meantime so she doesn't feel left out or useless.

We should bring our rig with us to the meeting. Even if you're not hiding something, you want to give the appearance that you're there to do business.

BB's ride is a prewar junker, the kind that flooded the market with guaranteed to break after four years models. Somehow he's kept it running. His bonsai tree.

"Good luck, Jack." Wendy sprawls out in the back seat as I check my rig again. There's no traffic on this road.

The grounds of Laudine's castle are so bright the lit windows don't even show up from here.

At the gates I hand over my rig and let them check it inside and out. Thick calloused hands turn it over and over like a mistreated baby while something clicks and beeps inside his head. I'm not worried about the sensitive stuff. A hand snakes inside my jacket and comes away with the disk.

    "What's this?" he demands.

"Just something she might be interested in."

They rough me up a little more, let me know where I'm at. "OK, go up."

She caresses an ivory column, delicate hand tracing along it. Part of it slips open under her fingertips and from inside come two chilled glasses.

"To life," she says, and takes a sip. A ghost of a smile crosses her face as she watches me abstain.

"Now what is it you came to see me about?"

No sense circling the drain. "The Friskie's shooting." Her face remains tranquil, as if I were reading her vapid poetry. "I need to know who they were, and why they came after Wendy. Was it the senator for ABS Plastics or someone connected to him?" I'm giving away more than I want to but I can't help it. That's Laudine's power. You crawl to her prostrate and splay yourself out on hooks and hope what she gives makes up for what she takes.

"Yes, I heard something about that." She tells me this it lets me know she heard everything about it.

All in. "There's a disk, too. It has something on it you might be interested in."

"You know what's on it?" I figure I might as well keep digging.

"Mmm," she no-comments. "Interesting that Wendy came to you, isn't it, Jack? You haven't spoken in what, four years? And then suddenly she drops into your lap from out of the sky."

A microsecond away from opening my mouth I think better of it. She's right, even as she turns me inside-out she's right. She sets her drink on top of the piano and slips a finger over the keys, pressing them one by one in an idle tinkling.

"Do you play the piano, Jack? At first one stumbles over the keys, never quite able to reach the next note on time. Then you learn to read the patterns, and if you're exceptionally talented you create your own."

"I need to know how all this goes together and you probably know where most of the connections fit. You knew I was coming, you knew I pulled a disk off that guy in the Friskie's. What do I have to do to get a straight answer out of you?"

Laudine beams, angel-like. "Jack," she admonishes me. "All you had to do was ask."

"I don't know what Wendy's told you, but I suspect she knows more about that disk than she's telling you."

Laudine swirls the last of the drink around in her glass and finishes it. As it clinks on the piano top she leans against it, shifting just enough to keep my attention on her. "I think she's been keeping a lot of secrets. Has she shown interest in the disk? I bet she has, hasn't she?" Laudine stage-whispers the last part conspiratorially, the two of us in the empty room like a parody of a gathering.

"BB, where's my gun?" Then I realize something. "Where's Wendy?"

"Who?" BB's slipping into full lizard mode. Nestle put it in their elite soldiers to keep them operating for months at a time without caring what they were killing. It's a one-way process that can be temporarily counteracted with the liberal application of neuroplastic drugs.

"The girl! The one we came here with!"

"Oh! Uh." He grunts, reloads without looking fires again. "Girl! Right there!"

Thank you to all the people who stuck around and joined in! I had a lot of fun running tonight's game.

And as an aside, that bit about BB's car being a "junker" has some truth to it. Last summer I bought a sack of Legos at a garage sale that included a lot of MegaBloks and other knockoff pieces. Included were some Hasbro BTR pieces. I gave away almost all of the non-Lego stuff, but I kept that black hull bottom because I thought it would make a cool hovercar.

And I meant to say this a long time ago, but if you are going with an actual arena I suggest posterboard as a cheap and quick way to build high walls. I used it extensively in Endman and the City of Gold and it worked out pretty well. Just break up the uniformity of the posterboard with a few Lego columns or stacks of wall pieces and you're set.
