    >Her we go, Episode three is about to get underway....

You are ALEX RASTON. A member of the Militia Guard of the independent colony of Hope, located in the northern part of what we know as the Mojave Desert.

In the last 24 hours, your world has turned upside down. You discovered romance with a long time friend, and then woke to see your home burning. You managed to save your family, and began coordinating with your squad to begin the counter attack.

Which almost came to a crashing halt when you went head to head with a core whose very presence filled you with a supernatural dread, making you freeze in place as he readied the final blow.

Until Dave, Squad-mate and Melee specialist crashed through an abandoned warehouse and smashed him off of you.

Now that his dreadful gaze isn't locked on you, you try to move again.

You take a deep breath, and get moving. You hear Dave's voice over the coms.

"Hey, I told Mooch to fly Recon, get everybody across town. As soon as he gets there we're going to have Elsie and Lawrence join us, take these guys out. For right now though, we need to keep this guy off the Bus."

    "Think we can kill him?"

"Normally I'd say two on one, easy money, but.... This is gonna sound weird but when he looked at me.... I think we might be boxing out of our weight class here."

"No, I know exactly what you mean. This guy is bad news, took my arm off like it was nothing."

Dave launches a volley of missiles from his shoulder pods, and you open fire with your Rifle.

Unfortunately about half your shots go wide, and some of them actually take out a couple of Dave's missiles.

They seem to have had the desired effect though, with the target AC going to ground quickly.

"Hey Alex, you feeling alright? Normally you're a better shot than that."

"I just had my arm ripped off Dave."

    "Fuck, what's your synch ratio?"

Dave gives you an affirmative, and takes off low and fast towards the approaching contacts.

His disappears from your radar quickly, you can only assume that means that he's enabled his stealth/jamming system.

You don't have much time to concern yourself with him, it seems like the AC you're tangoing with got his nerve back up to rush you.

Whether this guy is the real 9-Ball or not, he's got the stones to wear his colors and live; we can't take that in a straight fight. And using the buildings for cover only increases collateral damage to what's left of Hope.

We get out in the open and grab a good vantage point, not only will we have an advantage, but we might give our friends and their ACs a better line of fire on the target.

[If you beat the target number, you get to re-roll the maxed dice, and ad that to your score. in the case of another maxed dice from this set, you must re-roll again, against your target number -10, until you either fail the check or fail to max out the die.]

[The target number cannot drop below a five, for any reason.]

This guy came to your home, and started destroying it. He took off your arm, he's wrecked your core, and he's literally getting into your head somehow.

What took you over the edge, as your blade grazed his chest, is his voice in your ear, as he sends a tight-beam com to you.

"Strange that you fight so much, normally people surrender when they see me coming, thinking it would earn them some mercy. But you fight." He catches you blade with his and begins to push it back. "Tell me, what must I do to show you the futility of your actions?"

You deactivate your blade, and let it snap back into your arm, and duck his clumsy swing when he overbalances from the sudden shift.

Your arms darts forward before he can dodge, and latches onto his head unit.

    "GIVE ME YOUR FACE."

And with that you boost backwards, using the full weight of your core to rip off his core's head with a sickening screech of twisted metal.

    >MEANWHILE

Mooch touches down in the Hanger. Laurence's brother Zack organizes volunteers to help bolster the defenders on foot, as well as distribute gear.

Laurie himself has finished his slow synch, and launches himself over the lines and towards the fray, while Elsie begins to prep her gear. With Mooch helping in a proper hanger, it won't take long.

Ari leads her mother to a slightly out of the way place where they won't impede people. it's obvious that they aren't really in a condition to help.

    >BACK ON THE BATTLEFIELD~

Dave calmly strafes between the cannon fire. A quick burst of chaff disables the missile storm.

He recognizes the way this guy moves, the way he thinks.

He remembers the first time the first time he met Horace during training. He tried to hit him with a lead pipe so that Alex and Elsie wouldn't have their heavy hitter in the sims against his team.

He remembers the second time, when he came across Alex telling him that when his sister said no, she meant it. If he hadn't been there, his thug probably would have killed him.

He takes a moment to savor the kill when he lands on the front part of the tank assembly, before putting his Heat Rod straight through the cockpit.

It's been several minutes since he moved.

It's entirely likely that if his synch ratio was as high as yours, the shock from the feedback killed him. You hear Dave confirm that he scored both his kills, and he was moving to regroup with you now, just in case there's any hostiles still in the area.

It occurs to you that the core is relatively intact for a battlefield kill. Mooch would probably love to tear into it for research reasons, maybe even repair it to be added to your stable.

You and Dave begin boosting as hard as possible towards the exits. Along the way, you see a small convoy making it's way towards the exit. You grab one of the buses with your good arm and Dave grabs the other, while the two of you make a wild dash for the exit.

You manage to dodge a couple of Blackrock ACs who seem intent on.... looting? What the hell?

You fly towards the exits, telling your AC to ignore the overheating warning, to give you those few extra precious second of flight....

You make it to the Barracks. They're empty. You make it to the Main exit tunnel for the complex. As you enter the tunnel, you see a flash behind you.

It's starting. You throw the bus down when you near the exit.

Your thrusters are melted, your core is barely thumping along. The bus made it clear ahead of you. You made it to the very threshold when some part of you told you to look back. You saw the explosion racing towards you. You saw the shock-wave hit and throw you clear. You saw the blue sky below your feet, and the harsh brown earth way above you.

    Then you saw only Darkness......

You come to slowly, the sound of your cockpit struggling to come back to life. Some part of you knows it's a lost cause, and you take a deep breath and try to re-orient yourself before you bail.

You take a moment to look at your reflection, to check for injuries. You've definitely seen better days. And worse ones for that matter.

Looking at your reflection, you can see the ugly purple bruises starting to form where your harness caught you, and breathing in tells you you've got a cracked rib at the least.

You also take note of the stubble on your face. Judging by the last time you shaved, you've been out for at least three hours. You slowly put on your breather and goggles, and blow the hatch...

Your first course of action is to try and contact somebody. You try to use your comlink, and see that it's effectively out of range.

There is however the emergency beacon in the core itself. You could go back and touch that off, it has a range of several miles. You KNOW you couldn't be that far from your friends.

Then again... it's not exactly a discriminating signal. touching one off could mean you're found by Bandits or worse before the get here.

There's also the risk that they'll assume your dead or something if you DON'T set it ff and/or wait too long to contact them.

"I just need to borrow your phone. My coms system isn't strong enough to reach my home base."

"Roger that, I'll bounce your frequency back to the main base. They'll be able to reach anywhere in a hundred miles, easy."

    "Thanks."

    "No problem stranger."

After a moment he confirms the lines up and you put out a signal on an encrypted com.

Seconds later, Mooch answers you. "Alex? Holy shit is that you? We thought you were dead, vaporized by that fucking plasma wave when it came out the hatch!"

"Almost was. Luckily the shock-wave hit me and launched me skyward right before that happened."

"Damn. What're the odds something like that would happen? Good to know you're still among the living. We lost too many people today."

    ".... How many?"

"We're still doing a head count, but we can't have much more that 300 people with us. And everybody who wasn't with us was in the dome when the whole place got torched, assuming they weren't dead already."

    300. 300 out of almost ten thousand people. It's a hard number to stomach.

"Listen, Alex, I know you're probably freaking now, but I need you to give me something resembling coordinates so we can get you home alright?"

You get some from the boys at Omar, and relay them back to Mooch. Pretty soon you see a Core slightly larger than your own pull up. As the cockpit opens up, it kneels a bit letting the Pilot jump out onto the sand pretty easy.

"Hey." As he greets you, you recognize his voice from the coms. "Eggheads wanted me to keep you company till your friends arrived." He looks you up and down. "You look like you've had a pretty shitty day."

    [ ] I have.
[ ] I just found out almost my entire colony is dead.
[ ] I got the shit kicked out of me, then I was exploded, and then fell out of the sky.

"I just woke up after the worst ass-kicking of my life to find out my colony is a smoking ruin, and only about three percent of the people there survived."

    "Whoa what? Where, which colony?"

    "Hope."

"Shit. FUCK. I had a couple friends in Hope. Any chance they might've lived?"

"If they're alive, they'd be with my friends. Me and four other pilots managed to get SOME people out at least."

    "What the hell happened?"

"Black Rock raid. Or at least... that's what I thought." You think back. No way was that guy was one of those psychotic bastards. He was good. His gear was good. Then there's the traitors in the ranks... "I think it was a deliberate attack. Somebody wanted a colony kill."

    "Explain."

"There were traitors in the ranks. deliberate attempts to neutralize the Militia, steal our armor, and then butcher everybody. First targets were the Defense force, and then the com networks."

    "Shit..."

"Worse than that. There was this other Core there, I don't think he was one of them. He was good, damned good. You could fucking FEEL it when he looked at you. It s like trying to stare down an angry god. He had to be synching well over 50 percent and he didn't even FLINCH when I took his core's head. As soon as he realized we might be able to stop him, he played dead, slipped by me, and went straight to the power-plant."

    Joshua visibly pales. "He didn't..."

"He overloaded it. He didn't even try to warn his guys, he wanted to kill as many people as possible. If we weren't lucky with some advanced warning, we'd all be dead right now."

    A long silence passes.

    "So what now?"

"That's what we'll be asking when I get back with my friends. Right now...."

You see Mooch's cargo chopper come over the horizon.

You just stand there and hold her. You don't think you CAN do anything else right now.

"You went and fought the guy, and almost got yourself killed. And this is all my fault."

    THAT gets your attention. "What?"

"This is all my fault." She repeats softly. So soft you almost can't hear it. "We weren't ready because of me. If I didn't spread my legs for you at the first fucking chance, we would've been in town. We might have been able to save them."

She loosens her grip on you. Like isn't sure if she wants to pull away. "I got everyone else killed, and almost lost you as well. All because I decided to act like a massive slut."

Well maybe staying silent before was a bad idea.

Anyway, what's our rank in the militia, anyway? Did Hope have any preferred trading partners or other colonies it worked closely with?
