679 KB ARMORED CORE QUEST: ANOTHER DAY AC-Guy 04/07/12(Sat)22:28 No.18616965
    >LAST TIME, ON AC-QUEST: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=AC%20Quest

You are Alex Raston, and last night when you went to bed, you closed the door on the worst day of your life. Hope, the colony you called home was obliterated, with less that three percent of the population able to survive.

Right now, the roughly 300 survivors are looking to you for guidance. Today, you and your friends get to decide how to deal with the hand fate's dealt you.

Mooch wakes you up at around seven in the morning.

"WAKEY WAKEY, EGGS AND BAKE-Y!" Comes over the coms.

You begin to drag yourself out of bed, gently waking Elsie as you do so. Time to get this over with.
    >> Anonymous 04/07/12(Sat)22:39 No.18617144
    I vote Vegas.
    >> AC-Guy 04/07/12(Sat)22:41 No.18617168
You get to where Dave has cooked breakfast for your team, and apparently you have a guest.

    "Hello Zack. What's up?"

"Apparently due to my role in getting people out of Hope and helping to organize the survivors, they've more or less unanimously voted to make me their 'leader', at least until we have time to set up something proper."

You nod. "It's a good thing you're here then. We've got some ideas as o where to go next..."

"Yeah, my brother filled me in."

"Think we should put it to a vote with the people?"

"They, collectively don't know what they want. They know they want something better than what we have now, and are trusting me to get them there. I know that whatever we do, it's going to rely on you guys almost exclusively until we can get our feet under us again."

"So you're leaving the choice up to us?"

"If it makes you feel better, I used to be Corperate, so if we go North I can probably keep most of the 'screwed' off of us. And if we go the Vegas, well, that's where 90% of my smuggling contacts are. We can find a place for our people there no problem, temporary residence or otherwise."

    "Good to know."

At this point Mooch and Laurie shuffle in, bringing your little group to order.

"So what'll it be Alex?" Mooch asks you. "We've all talked it out with you and each other, and it seems like you're the deciding vote. Everybody else either can't make up their mind or can't be persuaded to change their vote."

    [ ] Vegas.
    [ ] Oregon.

    >Big choice here guys. Think it through carefully.

    Vegas

We might safe for now if we choose Oregon but we'll have no freedom once they're done milking the PR from us, if we want to remain independent and make Hope 2.0 we need to go Vegas. The money is better and we won't live under anyone's yoke.
    >> Anonymous 04/07/12(Sat)22:45 No.18617226
if you go to oregon, you could possibly find one of those not-so-secret missile silo installations, raid it and turn it in to a armored shelter for the 300 survivors as well as access to farmland.

if vegas, you can set up shop in a casino hotel and gamble a niche for yourself so that you can set up shop wherever you damn well please down the line.

Either way, people are going to take notice of you and try to interfere.

All too true. And excuse the...odd choices that I took in that post. Evidently I'm channeling my players' mentalities after a bit of drink this evening- both sound like options they'd shoot for as soon as making groundfall, haha.

One choice seems to be more of a commerce hub (vegas): with all of its pitfalls- high cost of living, loads of people, etc.

The other has farm land, livestock, military bases and bible belters
    >> AC-Guy 04/07/12(Sat)23:05 No.18617585
You're quiet for a moment, fully appreciating the scope of the decision before you.

"Vegas." You eventually decide. "We need parts, we need food, and supplies. We also need money. Vegas is pretty much THE trade hub for the entire area, with plenty of each for us to get ahold of. It's also a lot closer, and doesn't make us totally dependent on the goodwill of others."

Zack nods thoughtfully. "I let everybody know, and start calling ahead to make arrangements."

    "Thanks Zack."

He leaves your team to themselves.

Lawrence seems thoughtful, Dave seems like he's plotting something, Mooch seems to be cursing under his breath while he starts cleaning the table, and Elsies just kinda sitting there poking at her eggs.

    Who talk?

    [ ] Elsie seems uncomfortable.
[ ] Dave plotting something never ends well.
    [ ] Mooch seems upset.
[ ] Laurie. He did think Vegas was too risky...

"I meant tha you seem upset."

He lets out a dramatic sigh. "I really don't want to go back to Vegas. I REALLY don't."

"Then why didn't you say anything?"

"Because it's for personal reasons. It seems kinda petty compared to what we're dealing with but... You know how I never really talk about my past?"

    "Yeah...."

"Well there's reasons for that. Some of them are Vegas related. I'm just hoping that whatever happens there it doesn't come back to bite me in the ass."

    "Dave?"

    "Yes Alex?"

    "What are you scheming?"

"I'm just thinking of the last time I was in Vegas. Made money, stirred shit, had a generally awesome time. And this time I get to do it again, more and BIGGER, and claim the moral high ground. Since I'm getting money for a recovery effort, not to fund my science experiment of 'how many hookers can fit in once deluxe king-sized bed'. The answer is 16 by the way."

This makes Elsie speak up. "Hold up, this is something you did? Between this and the Doctor thing, I'm wondering what else you're keeping from us."

You soon realize what you're looking at. This is a data feed from Hope. Or what's left of it. You look over the past data and then you spot something weird.

The Dome.... Almost 3 tenths of a second before the explosion hit, the dome broke. In one spot.

What the hell? Did the pressure wave that hit you hit some sort of structural weak point?

You save the data and call Mooch.

"Hey man, I just found out Hope's still transmitting defense data to us.

"No shit? Some of the equipment must've survived. Might be able to salvage some of that for extra money."

"Maybe... but there's some weird results I'm getting off his data when I ran it."

"Huh. I'll have to look into it."

With that, you get back to assisting Laurie.

After another hour or so passes he comes in to dock "We're getting into the official Vegas territory. They don't like people running around without their say so."

    "Think we're safe?"

"Safe enough. I'll take over the radar room to keep an eye just in case."

    "Alright then."

A few minutes later he's there to relieve you. You can tell he isn't really in a mood to talk, so you leave him to his work after mentioning the weird data.

    With that you.....

    You talk to the team.

"Well, before anything else, I need a new rig."

"Getting a hold of the tools to strip out your AI core and reinstall it shouldn't be a huge deal here." Mooch helpfully adds. "So now we just need to figure out the main body at least."

Dave cuts in "And on that note, we've got three options: We can go to the corps and buy new, go to a junkyard and buy used, or go to the black markets."

Elsie looks curious "Why go to the black markets?"

"They don't sell a part to you if it's above what you're rated for. Take the Karasawa Beam Rifle. It's SA, because of the strain it puts on the Core, and in turn, the pilot. They don't want that shit to be handed to somebody who can't use it."

Mooch cuts back in "There's no law against OWNING and USING a part above your rating, but there is one against giving it to somebody who's not up to snuff. So even if we buy it from them, we don't get in trouble, and they only get burned if we get hurt. It's risky, and expensive, but they deliver quality."

"As for the other two... New's costly, but not as much as Illegal. It also comes with a warranty. Used means it might be busted, but there's also a lot of value there."

"I can also fix most anything that isn't slagged, and put a new shine on 'em too. But we won't know what's bad until it breaks."

"So, what'd we check out first Alex?"

We have two primary slots and two secondary slots right, one on each arm?

With that in mind Olympia for general use, the KE-Deagle as a holdout weapon, the Beam Saber in case we get into melee which we won't want.

For shoulders the Chaff and either the HS or Scatter, what exactly is the difference between the two.

This brings us to the exact weight limit so we ought to be just fine.

Another possibility is to get the sensor boost instead of rockets in case we want to complement having the Shogun.

Thus, Katana in 2nd Primary slot, with the Deagle being on the seconary slot of the arm w/the assault rifle.

Dave makes a few calls, and finds you a shiny new targeting computer that was conveniently misplaced, had it's paper-work destroyed in a tragic attempted arson, and then accidentally fell off a truck at a predetermined place and time.

So thanks to this unrelated series of totally unrelated circumstance, you're getting it pretty cheap.

    You lucky dog.

Zack takes an interest in the Arena, and chooses to accompany you, Elsie and Lawrence. Mooch and Dave opt to stay behind and get started on your Core.

At the Arena the desk clerk says that he'll go print copies of everything for you to sign and bring back, and tells you that the current Arena champion is in the pit while you wait. Apparently, It's a three on one exhibition match against some guys making a TV show.

You walk up to the rails across the way and look down. Apparently his is the 'live action' arena, as opposed to the various televised ones without the live crowds.

The match has already started when you get there, One of the three opposing cores having already gone down. The downed one was some sort of reverse-jointed sniper like Elsie's, and the two remaining is some sort of a giant Tank build with Canon Arms and two plasma canons on it's shoulders. Significantly bigger than the ones you saw at Dean's.

The other has twin shot-guns, has a very light speed build, and is for some reason a bright bubble-gum pink.

If it's to draw enemy fire, it's dong a remarkably good job. One of the nearby TVs gives you cockpit cams and lets you listen in on the conversation between the three team-mates.

"You know James, I know we make fun of you for being slow, but you certainly came out of the gates eager. You'll get good marks for enthusiasm"

"I don' think I need to take this from somebody who has a synch score so ABYSMAL that he can neither have LEGS or REAL ARMS."

"WILL YOU STOP BICKERING AND SHOOT HIM!"

"Now Richard, it's hardly our fault that you're the most visible member of the team."

"YES IT BLOODY WELL IS! YOU'RE THE ONE WHO PAINTED ME CORE PINK!"

    "We did do that actually."

"Yes, he might have a point there. Hey Hammond! See if you can draw him out in the open so I can get a shot- Oh bugger all, he's down too?"

"Yes, yes I am. Thanks guys, go team."
    >> AC-Guy 04/08/12(Sun)06:36 No.18622291
    >>18622288

"It's no problem at all, now he'll have to leave cover to get to me, and then I'll have him."

As he says this a Red-Black Blur shoots up out of area where the Pink AC was neutralized so fast the breeze hits you on the other side of the ring. He disappears from sight up high, and just as fast drops back into the ring directly behind the tank AC. It's over less than a second later, while the British man inside panics and tries to turn around.

And that's when you get your first real look at who they were fighting. Red and black colors. The Black Rock logo is gone, but the 9 is still on his shoulder.

".. how the hell...." You breath in disbelief as he moves to exit the ring. You tell yourself the guy you fought was an imitator. He wasn't this fast. Hell, maybe he built his core to look like that to try and get people on this guys rep.

Almost like he can read your mind, the core pauses right before it leaves the Arena and looks back. Right at you. And you feel it, the same presence weighing you down, the same sickening knot in your stomach.

He then leaves the Arena for real.

Considering the pilot they were up against murdered 10,000 civilians without blinking an eye, I'm surprised these guys lived.

Money must have changed hands to guarantee their survival, or the pilot was secretly a fan.

That would be like having Charles Manson as a fan.

You look over at one of the nearby viewers "So what's that guy's story anyway?"

    "Who?"

"The guy with the Red and Black Core."

    "Nine-Ball? You new in town?"

    "Pretty much."

"Well first off he's good. Real good. Pilot goes by the handle of Hustler One, no idea what his real name is."

    "And he's the Champ?"

"Yeah. Damnedest thing. Bout a year ago when he first rolled into town he was a nobody. At the time Some O'Brien guy was the champ. Anyway, he gets a kinda shitty rig, and a team that's not much better. Make a few goes in the Arena but never gets anywhere. Then about six months ago he goes on some mission with his team. Walks back into town a week later. His core's gone, and he says his whole team was dead. Not long after that he built a new core out of scrap metal and can-do spirit and goes back in the ring."

    "And he wins?"

"Over and over again. He only loses like two fights, mostly because of a hardware malfunction of some sort. Pretty soon he's built a solid rig and he's number two in the ring. Then he vanishes for a week, comes back with this new rig a dethroned the champ in less than a minute. Ever since then he takes all challengers and laughs in their faces. He also does Mercenary work a lot."

    "High risk, high pay?"

"Some, yeah. But he takes jobs from 'get kitten out of a tree' to 'Go take out a small country in Africa'. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Sometimes He'll go on a D-Rank mission and come back one foot in the grave, or go on a SS rank and come back without a scratch."

    "Anything else?"

"Not much more I can tell you that isn't common knowledge. Guys in the Raven's nest might know more. What's with the sudden interest? You a fan of his?"

    "Something like that."

You get your papers, grab your friends, and go.

Well, fuck. If I had been awake at the time I would've suggested a quad leg build. Hearing that there are tank arena opponents means we either need heavy hitting weapons or to make our shots count, at least, down the line.

    >>18622291
And this confirms my feeling of preternatural dread. Just putting it out there guys, we may wanna buy the arachnid legs soon and load up on some serious friggin' firepower.
