So, I known we've got Deadlands as the classic supernatural Old West, but has any developer done much with Southern/Appalachian folklore? There's bits of it in Lovecraft, I suppose, so you've got elements in Call of Cthulhu. Still, I think there's some promise here. Witches and hillfolk, fiddle contests at the crossroads with Old Scratch, etc.

    Pic related.

fun fact: The idea that witches had magic bridle they could use to enslave anything they put it on goes back a long way. They could trow it over a person, an animal, even an inanimate object and then it would be forced to carry the witch wherever she desired, even allowing the bewitched object or creature to fly. Of course, this also rapidly wore the animal or person or object out, and repeated rides would destroy them.

Okay, that's volume one. There's two more, but first I'm gonna run to the store to get stuff for dinner. I'll post the rest when I get back.

In the meantime, here's a discussion question: What sort of creatures, magical or otherwise, would haunt such a setting? Obviously we've got witches, ghosts, demons and their ilk (though clad in appropriately rustic forms) and savage/inbred/mutant hill-people... but what else?

I suggest Goat-men. Feel free to throw out other ideas.

In an urban fantasy story I've been working on set in New Orleans, I had two sets of Vampires. True Vampires, led by Hernan Cortes, who were mostly made up of refugees of the Spanish Inquisition who had fled to America. They were the bosses of the masquerade while the Wampyr were their grunts - "young" Vampires imported from Eastern Europe to serve as cheap, temporary muscle and were culled whenever they started to develop sentience.

Another character was a Lafayette, a local mercenary that skinchanged into a man-alligator monster. And of course there's the Wendigo...

The wendigo thing appears in a lot of different tribes, though, including those in the midwest. There's a lot of variation to it, also, to the point that the only thing that's common to ALL of them is the cannibalism angle. Like, some of them are huge giant monsters, and some are just really evil hungry dudes.

The Fouke Monster is a good old fashioned bit of Southern lore. Of course, the moment you go into the swamps, you want to think about the Skunk Ape or the Honey Island Swamp Monster. Really, crypto-zoological apemen come in more flavors and bestial variety in the South as compared to the rest of the US. Don't forget lizard men too, there's a lot of lore about giant man-shaped lizards or gator-men in the Everglades. There's just something about unkempt swampland and lights at night that makes the mind wander.

Of course, there's also the feasibly realistic. Restless bears, for one. And there's also been a -long- history of nasty, angry boars in the South, something about the ecosystem letting them thrive and get nice and big.

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with mutant kudzu. It's been down there for over a century, and foot by foot it's still trying to strangle the South.

I can verify this. There's entire towns up in North Mississippi - the foothills of Appalachia - that have been killed by the kudzu. Homes, schools, roads; they've been strangled and are beyond saving now.

I'm sorry, I just don't see the reason why they can't just break out the industrial herbicide and reclaim what's theirs. Maybe it's just 'cause it's Appalachia, but I would think someone would have figured out a way to reclaim entire buildings.

Grows -way- faster than herbicide and it literally takes between 40-80 gallons per acre. There really is millions of dollars allocated yearly just to basically keep kudzu at its current presence and even then it's not always solving the problem.

In general they're wary about stuff like runoff, and in a lot of places (like here in Virginia where I live) a lot of the kudzu'd areas are privately owned but abandoned. So if the owners don't give a shit about their property, the kudzu will just stick around forever. We don't have any buildings or roads messed up, though, mostly just forested areas that have been choked to death. Actually losing a whole town to kudzu seems unlikely.
    >> Anonymous 04/08/12(Sun)19:05 No.18628315
You mean Lovecraft clumsily shoehorned his Mythos into the mouths of his offensively stereotyped Southern yokel characters and the general area.

Ok, that's mean. I just happen to have family back in the area and even though I don't live there I get annoyed when people, even writers I like make clumsy forays into the "genre" of southern stuff.

As far as I'm concerned the local writers did the best stuff praising the charms, and denouncing the ugliness of the South.

But yeah, I do think it has the potential to be an interesting setting. It's this unique melting pot of folklore and such from around the British isles, some African and African American stuff from the smattering of Blacks, and some local stuff.

    >>18628269
    Pfff.
That's not in Appalachia at all. I mean, I know it's out in the boonies, but it's not really especially Southern, even if a lot of places in the south modernized into coal and mining towns like that. Even if we assume a modern mining town setting, the folk lore stuff is much older than that.

    Yep. That stuff is crazy.
In the Northwest we only have Blackberries and Scotch Broom, and it's bad enough dealing with stuff like that. You have to dig it out by the roots, as even dousing everything with gasoline and burning it to the fucking ground doesn't always work, what with the roots surviving and all.

Also I forgot. I'm from Jersey so there are some things we've heard of up the trail, so to speak. For a while we heard of frog people that lived along the trail. They don't go out, they've got wall-eyes, webbed fingers and hands, slick skin, but they live in towns and villages like normally people would. While frog people don't exist, if this is taking place in the 1950s they could be a side-effect of the thalidomide babies.

In that same vein, southern Ohio has the Melonheads. The story behind them was that they were kids with hydrocephaly being treated by a misguided/cruel doctor whose treatments did much more harm than good. The doctor dies and the kids escape the hospital/asylum, living in the woods and forests like feral children.

Really, the Wrong Turn series kind of touches on this idea of disfigured humans the best. They -were- perfectly normal townsfolk living up in the hills who didn't leave when the towns dried up, basically. Pollution from lumber mills and paper mills kills the local game, so they end up hunting people and interbreeding to survive. And the effects of this show, much more so than The Hills Have Eyes. The mutants in The Hills Have Eyes have borderline superpowers, with chameleonic skin and super strength. In Wrong Turn, they're mentally addled and severely disfigured.

And, more importantly, things we never want to meet. Those things that go bump in the night we know aren't really real. Or, more truthfully, hope aren't.

Up near here there was a guy who had a whole bunch of exotic animals as pets, like ostriches and lions and tigers and bears and monkeys and whatnot, and he up and killed himself after letting them all loose.

So you had the entire sheriff's department and National Guard running around trying to round all of them up for a few days. It was... interesting.

Mothman's actually from central West Virginia, although the most famous incident involving it was in Point Pleasant.

Interestingly enough, before the Silver Bridge accident, Point Pleasant had a lot of misfortune and problems that plagued it, so even though it should've been situated perfectly to develop into a site of trade and industry thanks to its location at the confluence of two rivers, it's only got a population of less than 5000 today.

Before the Mothman incident, the prevailing myth was that the town was cursed by a Shawness chief, Cornstalk, who tried to warn the settlers at the fort there, shortly before the Revolutionary War, that his tribe was gearing up for war against them and he couldn't restrain them any longer. So the settlers freaked out, held him, his son, and a Shawnee warrior named Red Hawk essentially hostage in the fort while they figured out what to do.

fuck, I seem to remember reading a scary story about that thing. Some hunter out one night shoots the tail off some weird creature, takes it home as a trophy. Each night following, he hears it outside, sniffing around the doors, sees it looking through the windows, hears it saying "GIVE ME BACK MY TAIL!"

Then, on night, he sees its glowing eyes in the room. It keeps demanding its tail back, getting closer and closer...

    (cont.)

In the meanwhile, a scouting party from the Shawnee tribe shot a couple of soldiers that went out hunting from the fort, which ignited the settlers' suspicions that Cornstalk had somehow led them here and was planning to kill them all. Without a trial or questioning or any chance, soldiers burst into the cell where Cornstalk, his son, and Red Hawk were being held, shot them in a fit of paranoia, and Cornstalk cursed the town with his last breath.

Some say that Red Hawk's spirit became the agent of this curse in the form of the "birdman", which would later be described as the Mothman, either bringing misfortune on the town or observing the curse unfolding.

All I've ever really heard of in Virginia are ghost stories. The tale about Lover's Leap. Ghosts in Dismal Swamp. That sort of thing. Though it wouldn't surprise me if you rounded up a story about a monster or two. The underbrush certainly gets thick enough in some place. Plenty of briars and bushes to get caught in. Plenty of things crashing through the swamps too.

I'm sure you already know about Brere Rabbit/High John the Conqueror, the captured African prince who wandered the South teaching white folks lessons by letting them beat him at ridiculous contests.

You also know about cunningmen, appalchian folk magic the lowland Scots and the Irish brought from the old country, the secrets of the Dutch in the Adironacks and the mountains of Vermont and New Hampshire, the difference between hoodoo, voodoo, and vodoun. I'm sure you know that due to the peculiar history of slavery and the Indian nations down South you can find not only preachers of every Christian denomination, and not only the various vodounistas and hoodomen, but also imams and yoruba witchdoctors and medicine men and a Lumbee war chief with the sword of Sir Walter Raleigh.

But if we are going to do Deadlands, but say in the 1930's and in the South and Appalachia, you should really look at lumberjack folk monsters -

Also consider this: the PC's have been hired by the Works Progress Administration to troubleshoot weird happenings within the growing jurisdiction of the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Also, can this be a balkanized 1930's in the same way the supernatural awakening in the Wild West in Deadlands triggered a mild Balkanization?

If the misery of the Great Depression gave old Scratch greater power over the world, then maybe weird things should be happening in our general area - let's say East of the Mississippi to the Appalachians (including the Midwest?) and everything South of the Mason-Dixie line and north of Orlando besides?

Alternatively to old Scratch, maybe the reason why those Cherokee were so eager to sell Transylvania Country to Daniel Boone was the curse over the land? The ancient demons, the primordial beings from before creation, beneath the hills and swamps?

And oh boy do they get side tracked, 'specially when they stumble across the abandoned mining town, a a ramshackle scrap yard of crumbling houses, junk, and sinkholes. On a hill deep within they spot one building, and old mansion, that still seems in decent shape. Yet they can't shake the feeling that they're being watched...

Yes something to remember about southern folklore is that it's one huge mashup of Native American, West African, Scottish and Irish folklore.

Generally speaking if you can fit it in one of the above four and flavor it to a southern style then it will make sense.

Well, there's no reason why the people of West Virginia, western North Carolina, and the rest of the hill-tribes of low Scotch and Irish (as compared to the coastal plain plantation owner slaver anglican and presbyterian english and highland scot types) couldn't have brought dragon eggs from the Old Country.

But to keep things more in flavor, a Cunningman could do like the old European toad doctors did and hatch a chicken egg with a frog, making a basilisk. A basilisk behind the chicken coop might be less jarring than a Welsh red dragon flying over the Holler.

Speaking of which, remember, before there were Hillbillies, before there were Mountain Yankees, the poor folks who became yeomen in the South instead of plantation owners, the mountain and west counties folk, they were Cohee. And the rich plantation owner high southern types were called Tuckahoe. Usage of old Indian names, I guess. There's a wikipedia page about it.

And outside of the South, don't forget the Acadians and Dutch and other pre-British control of Niew Amsterdam families that never left their mountain holdfasts. From Vermont down through Pennsylvania - not to mention New Sweden and New Denmark while we are at it.

And if you want to stray farther afield, you can go from Dixie up the Mighty Mississippi to St.Louis, into Missouri and Iowa country where they used battle-axes and other medieval weapons in the Honey War (look it up), and North from there into the country of the Minnesota and Wisconsin lands - where Indian monsters and folkmagic run strong, and where the supposed ruins of a cryptohistorical viking incursion deep West lie. See, because lots of Scandinavians in the 19th century happened to settle in the Upper Midwest, and because a few odd things like runestones have been found, they really like to think that there was a lost viking colony in Minnesota.

    it kindasorta is.

Seriously. America has all types of terrain in it, and a lot of it is... Under developed.

I live in a suburb... technically. i prefer to call it "Pre-Rural" because Modern Maryland Suburbs are quarter-acre lots with a horribly built McMansion who are so tightly cramped that you can look out of your bathroom window while taking your morning piss and see your neighbor eating breakfast... and vise-versa... but I digress. I live on a large plot of land with a little bitty house. Same goes for my six or so neighbors within reasonable walking distance. four of my neighbors raise horses (one breeds, one shows, one has miniature horses.), one raises chickens. I'm alone in having a large, well-maintained lawn and garden (I could argue that I grow fruit and vegetables, but really it's an excuse to give everyone in the neighborhood free tomatoes, and have sliced strawberries in my cereal every morning.)

Every day, i walk my dogs after dinner... and we go two neighbors away... and we're in the woods.

There's a kind of footpath, it runs alongside the narrow creek that swells every spring, turning the whole thing into a swamp. But walking through there, it's a good reminder for suburbanites exactly how close to nature we are.

in the mud beside the creek, I see animal tracks, with fresh ones daily. Lots of deer, and bird tracks of all sizes (including an Emu track, but that's a different story) rarely a dog track, almost never anything predatory.

Last year, late in the autumn, I saw a track that I didn't know. So, I went home, and used the internet. Turned out, it was Black Bear.

There was a black bear at a water source less than a quarter mile from my home.

Not the most terrifying thing, but honestly, it's an aspect of our wilderness that large bodied predators can be hiding just about anywhere.

Have a good look at this map. I grew up in one of the white (under 25,000) counties. Even more specifically, I grew up IN THE COUNTRY 30 miles from the nearest town and about 180 miles from what you could call a city (population 25,000). And it is creepy as fuck.

Every day of my childhood was a roll on a random encounter table. When I stepped out the door, I didn't know if I was going to run into a coyote or a badger or a rattlesnake or a pissed-off wild hog or a transient group of illegals sneaking their way north north. I recall one morning stepping outside barefoot and feeling something furry between my toes, only to look down and see a Brown Recluse trapped under my big toe. And here's a fun fact: scorpions can climb up walls onto the ceiling, and can and WILL fall onto your bed while you sleep.

That's just the mundane stuff, don't get me started on all the creepy, weird shit you find in old West Texas towns. Just earlier today I was driving through Dublin, Texas, home of a pretty big Dr. Pepper bottling factory. It got shut down about a year ago (they were selling sweet, delicious sugar-cane sweetened Dr. Pepper outside their legal range), the place is already turning into a ghost town. It only had a population of about 3,500 to begin with, but the mainstreet is already being boarded up, you don't see people on the streets anymore, and you can't imagine how creepy a cheerful Dr. Pepper sign can look after it's been left to wear and fade for a year.

And then if the ghost-towns weren't enough, there's all the population <20 towns. Imagine; you're driving through west or north Texas. You haven't passed through a town for at least 50 miles. Then you see it; "Welcome to fabulous Lobo, Texas! Population: 15." And you drive over the hill and see a small clump of trailers across from a few buildings. You stop at the gas station, and immediately out runs an eager-faced thirty-something-year-old man who just can't wait to welcome you and show you around their fabulous metropolis.

They have a post-office. No one ever mails anything, but they keep it staffed and cleaned and have a full stock of stamps and envelopes and boxes. They have a grocery store, but everything's canned and the labels are faded and torn. They have a visitors center with a library full of helpful pamphlets, books, and (apparently) handwritten tour guides to the wonderful city of Lobo.

And that's when you notice that the man who had been pumping your gas is also the man waiting in the information kiosk to hand you a pamphlet, and there he is again sweeping the porch in front of the antique store that doesn't appear to have any antiques for sale. You look around and see that there aren't any children, but there IS a little one room school-house across the street with a chain and lock on the door. And there's a flag on the pole outside the school, and by the looks of it they take it down and fold it up every night. Same thing with the flag in front of their city hall (which is an old 60s-style silver trailer house with a sign above it and a plaque on the door), and the flag in front of their motel (also a trailer).

And slowly the realization sinks in that you're surrounded by mad-men. So you walk back to the gas station, say goodbye as pleasantly as possible, and drive away. But as you're leaving, the eager-faced man calls out "We can't wait to see you again!"

There must have been two thousand beer bottles and cans littering the gully and in the dugout itself, I shit you not, there was an old tv and a gas-powered generator.

The creepiest part is that it was only about five miles from my house, but more than thirty miles from town, and nobody had ever seen this motherfucker. How long had the dude been there? I live in Georgia, on 'the edge' so to speak. On the edge of a quick growing town turning into a city. Not suburbs, but not country either. Just 15-20 acre plots, that have lots of thick woods and underbrush. It is almost jungle like at times, with the ferocious southern sun and the intermittent deluges of rain.

And there is a grave yard on my land.

Not technically mine. It is the counties in an official capacity, but they never go there. Go across the dam over the pond, up the hill past the few remaining old trees and you night distinguish the rusted twisted metal, and dark bricks, from the leaning trees that surround it.

Just two sit under those trees. I think they predate WWII, but I have no idea really. I can see them on the cartographers plot, a little snip, and there they are.

The iron, is old and ornate. Strong beyond its years. The stone is heavy, much more than modern bricks. The markers are just scratches at this point.

When we hear screams that aren't made by animal or man, we look up through the trees, on the hill.

West Virginian here, the odd thing is that really the only part of our state that qualifies under this is the south-central portion. The northern panhandle is much more like Pennsylvania, and is part of the Rust belt with dieing steel towns, and the eastern panhandle is slowly being overtaken by upper-class white-collar people who commute to work in DC.

Actually that gives me an idea for a campaign. An upper-class housing district is being constructed, only they seem to have uncovered something that keeps mysteriously killing off construction workers. The company wants to keep it under wraps to prevent the buyers from being scared off, and hires the party to figure out what the hell is going on.

There's always been little natural gas pumps dotting the hillsides, you can ever see a lot of them from the road driving past, and you get used to the sound of the grasshoppers ratcheting up and down. A lot of rural houses just have their own well that they pipe up gas to for heating and cooking.

But there's a few wells that have tapped into something that is decidedly not natural gas, although it burns hotter and more efficiently than ordinary gas. It's fumes and vapors from something far older and far more dangerous, and the people who have come in contact with it are affected in the strangest ways...

Okay, what if we go with a dual-class system. Each character has two classes: one class for their social standing, and one class for their occupation.

So we could go with Local, Transient, and Outsider for their social class, and something like Businessman, Preacher, Criminal, and Wildman for occupation class.

Say you want to be a moon-shiner. You'd be a Local/Criminal. Mafioso on the run from the law, hiding out in the sticks? Outsider/Criminal.

Wanna be a circuit preacher holding fire-and-brimstone revivals throughout the South? Transient/Preacher. Want to be a witch or do that voodoo if you're from Louisiana? Local/Preacher. Want to be a, say, Catholic priest trying to set up a permanent church in the backwoods to bring some civility to the boonies? Outsider/Preacher.

Wanna be those guys from Deliverance? Local/Wildman, obviously.

There are little pockets of old Catholic influence, mostly in the old steel towns up farther north into Pennsylvania and the Rust Belt. Large groups of German and Polish Catholics that moved into those areas.

But for the most part? Yeah, a Catholic preacher would be very much out of the ordinary.

I can see a group of nuns coming to a town and hoping to set up a school or something and having to deal with crazy shit that goes down after they arrive as a plot hook.

I would rather keep the class system pretty loose. People out here in the rural parts of the country had to have a wide range of skills to live on, and I don't like the idea of restricting it with just a few labels like that.

That would work for one-shots, but for a longer campaign where the players might move around, having someone be a "local" boy wouldn't make sense once they moved around.

How about City Slicker, Country Boy, and Transient? I think all of those would work with Businessman(Entrepreneur?), Preacher, Criminal, and Wildman.

    >How about City Slicker, Country Boy, and Transient?

I like that idea. I can see the three of them having a trade-off between different resources.

So a city-slicker would have a lot of book-learnin', like a doctor or scientist with lots of money, but absolutely no contacts in the area and not much experience with survival skills. A country boy wouldn't have the same education, but would be highly connected to the people in town and can get information and resources more easily from the townsfolk. And then a transient would have no money or connections or education, but would have a shit load of skills and experience to help them survive.

This could work well. Each social class would have its own strengths and weaknesses. Should there be well-defined "Occupation" classes, or should that be freeform? I'm leaning towards the former, if not to just make things a little more orderly.

Well, one of the reasons I brought up coon hunter specifically is that it's a different kind of hunting. There's no stealth to it, and surprisingly little woodcraft involved as well, if you've got a good dog. A coon hunter just lets the dogs loose, then they scent, track, and tree the coon. When the coon's treed, back in the day, the hunter'd have the choice of climbing the tree to knock the coon out into the dogs, which'd then kill it, set a fire under the tree and smoke the coon out, or cut the tree down to let the dogs get to the coon to kill it. There's a possibility of them shooting the coon out of the tree, but usually in the leaner days (basically, any time before the 60s or so) they wouldn't waste a bullet unless they really, really wanted the pelt.

But yeah, it's a very, very different type of hunting than the likes of deer/boar/bear hunting or trapping.

    >>18633646
    Yeah, that works better. So for what we're working with, each class would have an array of skills, talents, or abilities associated with it. Just to broadly define it;

City Slicker - has more social graces and talking skills (could be useful when dealing with, say, the remnants of an Old South family nobility or a witch)

Transient - has broad-based general knowledge and survival skills, and good stealth abilities (needs to hide out on the edges of towns and sneak onto trains, that sort of thing)

Country Boy - has specific outdoor and survival skills (say Knowledge: Swamp for a Louisiana character for example)

Entrepreneur (I like that better than Businessman) - focuses even more heavily on communication skills, deception, bartering, etcetera. Could range from a snake-oil salesman to a haggling chicken farmer

Preacher - has morale-boosting abilities and provides protection and healing from the supernatural

Criminal - acts as a thief-type and serves as an impromptu alchemist, forger, and odd-job-man

Wildman - focuses even more heavily on outdoor and survival skills, trains animals, things like that

Their Social Class would determine more their knowledge and social abilities, while their Occupation Class would entail their combat or exploration abilities.

Well, I'm making a homebrew fantasy campaign that works on a three-class system so this two-class system is just a simplified version of that. In the fantasy game you have a Social class, Job class, and Combat class. Four of each, giving 64 combinations, and enough skills in each of the 12 classes to make different combinations different ways.

I think a similar model would work well for this. So, for example, two people could take Transient Wildman, and depending on what skills they bought and developed one could end up with a sort of traveling minstrel hobo, acting as a party bard by entertaining his way across the land for food and booze with charisma and music-based skills, and the other could make a character who's more of a migrant worker, and become the party fighter using lots of strength-based skills from swinging a pickaxe all his life. That's just one example, and even with only 12 combinations in H&H it would give the players lots of options.
