429 KB Ironhearts Vol.2 VVarroom- Gorgon Fortress Action Report DeathMarshal !9phgYvH10U 04/15/12(Sun)01:16 No.18718548
    August 20th
    Fall of 646,

The Oderkonn's containment unit melted again, and the girl continues to be in a chemically induced coma. He has called on a little council to decide her fate.

    The first choice was death.

The second was an alternative form of capture.

    Afternoon-
We mananged to scrounge up a percentage of the Ibonyte stores in the fortress, seeing as theres still more in the ground, we found it prudent to disable each and every mechanism in the fortress.

The amount was staggering, I spent most of my days counting it myself. After a few soldiers were executed for pocketing a few, I moved on to using the locals to lend a hand. Not one black dusted hand left the dig, these people are truly a hardworking breed, and it's baffling how they coordinate themselves when Authority wasn't a daily part of their lives....

    >120 Terror was received at the end of the mission if the CO would rather not do a count up.
    > 2.2 Ibonyte Shares Gained

    August 21st,

I got a report that Vilkas goes out to the village disguised as an adept. This time he has with him a set of village clothes. He tries so hard to evade my keen eye. I burn the report and assign 2 more men to watch him and report directly to me.

" Iceheart, Death Marshall, Cotton, White, Elizabet and Vonclaude, your names came to mind when I proposed this project. But time is starting to run out. We've used a piece of the ibonyte to keep Deus under an induced coma, but the drugs needed are being consumed and metabolized at a rapid rate, even if we have 2 solid blocks of ibonyte supplying dopamines into her system.

Truth be told, a Deathgod is a creature of self awareness, and so theres not empirically scientific method of containing her physically.

However, her mind is that of a former war victim, and a kashirn orphan. And so it is my firm belief that if we erase her memory , or lock them away, her experiences and knowledge of being Deus will be just as effectively locked away as if she was in an iron coffin.

However it will be risky, but not anymore-so than protecting our Young Prince.

Knowing the risks would we rather move forward with this ? Or just exterminate her, right away ?

"A memory wipe would leave us an opportune chance to weaponize Deus Ex, though it could be risky if the effects aren't permanent--I wouldn't want what we're essentially stripping down into a wind-up Killtoy to turn on us because she has a flashback. Isn't there a way we can talk her over to our side? Perhaps let the Starstress Rai talk to her?" Ella turned the Eye of Shiva over and over in her hand, watching the light catch on its surface.

I will verify that this is the varmach I have on record as being the most updated currently.

On that note, I'll tally up some xp:
    >45 from previous missions
    >42 from phase survival
    >10 from Deus captured
    >10 from Bomb defused

    >107 total

I'm assuming we're hitting another of the skylands soon, so I'll be upgrading my Halberd to provide a superior command presence up in the air.

*Miniature Radio Network Hub - 2nd Lt. von Claude's extensive command experience is only accentuated when he has a bird's eye view of the battlefield.
    >Gain -$- Call in ability while piloting the Halberd
*Vanguard crew - von Claude teaches a multifaceted approach to his interns, instructing them not only on the finer points of tactics but also to step beyond their honed melee skills to pilot vehicles they are otherwise not familiar with. Perhaps the talent will come in handy some day?
    >Gain an additional action due to increased efficiency of the crew

The above upgrades cost 90 of my 107 xp. I'll donate 10 to Alfie so she can tinker with her vehicle some more. Hope the poor girl's doing alright after that incident with the Zeon.

About that actually, her psychological profile is irreversibly anti- Voss. Due to the unfortunate circumstances of our overwhelming offense, she has seen firsthand what we're capable of, and more importantly, what we did. Someone like her won't see reason if that experience is a part of her past. She would choose death itself as is already evident.

What Oderkonn presents is a possibility for that to happen, but only after we've stripped away those memories. Killing her would be just as similar.

And speaking of Zeon, Oderkonn, that reminds me. We have more problems than just Deus Ex burning through the supplies needed to keep her captive. First, how in the hell did Hassan break through our blockade while we were busy ATTACKING HIM? Second, how did he have Zeon gas? I imagine you were as surprised as us to find he had access to our main weapon considering you didn't warn me about it beforehand. So how'd he get it? Reverse engineer by some unseen Kashirn scientist? Or are those rumors I've heard of a spy true?

As a side note, perhaps you should be looking outside the realm of science for the solution to our containment problem. Have you spoken with the Countess or any of our corpsiers about the issue? I could see Haunts being of some use, especially....

Still trying to fight back another coughing fit, Alfie knew it probably wasn't wise to have sneaked out of the hospital so early. However, the sheer amount of Ibonyte and its possibilities were too staggering to ignore. Being part of the Royal Guard, it wasn't very hard to requisition some for upgrading Axel.

With it, components could be miniaturized or removed completely, leaving more space for additional components. In no time, Alfie already had plans drawn up to integrate a second cannon into her tank with virtually no net increase in overall weight, doubling its firepower to size ratio.

    >Alfie's Beetl now has dual cannons, which work with the exact same mechanics as the Gryphon's dual cannons. Both cannons can be fired as a single weapon or in sequence as separate weapons.

    >10 phases survived before evaccing--20xp
    >Placing all 20 into All the Lights in the Sky

"So we can either give her a quick death right now, or wipe her memory, make her into our slave, and wait until she dies a more honorable death on the battlefield? Not exactly a fan of those choices." Ella stopped tumbling the amulet in the palm of her hand, instead opting to slip it into her pocket. "But control or destruction regardless, I hope that our Death God proves her worth to us. If you'll excuse me." Ella saluted the Deathmarshal before departing, her two bodyguards Abilene and Oleg locking in to step with her as soon as she stepped outside.

The last events of the battle unfolded in Ella's mind slowly, carefully. The ride back to the base was shaky and loud. The Halberd used for the evacuation was flying so low and so fast that it skimmed the tops of several of the taller sand dunes. When the Halberd reached the base, she immediately hopped off the massive gunship, making a beeline for the Command Tent. As soon as she pushed back the tent's entrance flaps, she realized there was a small crowd of regular army soldiers and aides clustered around the radiomen, listening intently to the remaining Royal Guard soldiers' efforts to attempt to defuse the ailing fortress. It was surreal, seeing everyone grouped around the cluster of radios, waiting with bated breath, listening to these soldiers--these friends--all coordinating some miles away from the base, attempting to divert a potential disaster. Slowly, the minutes ticked away. The coolness of the night air did not reach that tent; the combined stress and body heat made the tent seem as warm as day, even with the fans continually trying--and failing--to alleviate some measure of the heat. Minutes soon turned into hours.

And then, as darkness slowly gave way to light, the first reports came in. Slow at first, but definite: the detonation had been stopped, the fortress was taken, and the defusal team was requesting pickup. Ella had breathed a sigh of relief, grinning and shouting. She remembered hugging Abby in sheer bliss, and then remembered both her and Abby being lifted off the ground as Oleg embraced them both and lifted them. She didn't remember much after that point, however--the next thing she knew she was laid out on her bed, eyes closed, in her shorts and tanktop. Her vision was blurry, her throat dry. Her head was pounding. Her officer's uniform was cleaned and pressed, waiting on a nearby clothes rack, and the ingredients for a prairie oyster were right by her bed.

Presently, she found herself walking away from the officer's tent, Eye of Shiva in tow, contemplative on the nature of the dug up relic. Ella let out another sigh, shaking the thoughts from her head. She slipped her hand into her pocket and bringing out the Eye. It caught the light at odd angles, its surface feeling smooth, almost glasslike in texture. However, it had weight, like a small stone. No sunlight shone through it, and it felt cold to the touch. She needed answers about this thing. 'And who better to know about Kashir artifacts than a priestess of the culture itself?' She contemplated these things as she stopped to the front of the Starstress Rai's tent, directing Abby to keep watch out front as Oleg and her stepped inside.

The first thing she noticed was a pungent, heady scent. It lingered in the room, drifted around her like a slow-moving fog bank. The next thing she noticed were the colors that adorned the room. Bright golds, deep purples, and striking reds adorned the walls, the ground, and the furnishings. The room's luscious nature stood as a contrast to the interiors of the Voss military buildings—spartan, unfeeling, and generally quite dull in exchange for being highly efficient. An incense holder, the source of the fragrant smell, sat some distance off on a small table, the smoke lazily rising and forming a haze near the top of the tent, just above Oleg's head. Gold and red rugs covered the floor, with an assortment of large, plush cushions scattered about a table laden with exotic trinkets. Seated at the table herself was the Starstress Rai. Ella, deciding not to be rude, opted to introduce herself. “Starstress Rai?” She began. “I'm Staff Sergeant Cotton—call me Ella, if you like. On my last mission I found this object while I was out in the field—Fran called it the 'Eye of Shiva'. Would you happen to know anything about this object? I have it with me right now, if you wish to see it.”

Quality. Speed was another factor. with a sprite sheet I was able to play around with more iconic and visually integrated pieces.

and best of all this didn't take away from the speed and ease of use i'd usually get when I did hand drawn symbols for units.

I'd suggest we try looking into the applied sciences. Since we already have available options for weaponry and armor, I'd suggest we branch out into other areas. Two projects that come to mind are genetics research, possibly to create a sort of "supersoldier" serum, and the usage of Ibonyte as power supply.

    >The defusal of the Crisis of Silvia, from the defense of the town to the taking of the Gorgon Fortress, prompted a unique opportunity from the Ministry of Information to show the Voss commoner and the Kashir villager both that The Terrible Children were a force to be reckoned with. For the former, a massive campaign was launched to record several of the Royal Guard members as they performed several duties at the fledgling Cross Academy in Silvia, whether those duties were supervising field operations, communicating with students in the classrooms, or actively recruiting cadets to take part in the war effort. The propaganda magazines spouted off on these activities, how the Terrible Children, though fierce soldiers, had their kinder moments. Future historians would call the Ministry of Information's extensive campaign as a "Hearts and Minds" type of activity, to gather positive influence both sides directed toward the Young King of the Voss Empire and the empire itself.

    >The latter, however, prompted yet another surge in Voss propaganda. It was during this time that the Halberd Pamphlet Drop propaganda idea was reconsidered, and those a few test flights were made, results proved to be not up to par for the Ministry of Information. Indeed, radio broadcasts soldiered onward as the best way the Voss could keep the pressure on their enemies, both in and out of combat. The following is a transcript of one of the Vosskon Blossom broadcasts made after the Capture of Gorgon Fortress.

VB: Why hello again, my favorite desert soldiers!~ This is your number-one gal, Vosskon Blossom, coming to you live from the Voss captial, broadcasting to all your homes and bases. I'll be honest with you, boys--your tenacity to our cause is admirable, if misguided. We could always use soldiers like you in the Voss Empire. And why wouldn't you join? We have soft beds and fresh food, beautiful women and resources abundant! Think about it boys: you drop your weapons and come over to our side, and your lives will be transformed like magic--and not those parlor tricks those priests of your do, oh no. We're talking real magic here, boys--over the span of a day, you are transformed from farmers into soldiers, infantrymen fighting in the ranks of the greatest military power this land has ever seen. Join our side, and you will be guaranteed food, shelter, even new clothes.

Why do you do this to your selves, Kashir? Why do you render yourselves complacent--nay, impotent--in the face of a few old men who wish to squeeze what they can from their dying culture? The world is changing, people of Kashir. The Voss Empire is on the virge of a period of great flourish and wealth. Would you not want to experience this change as well? Or are you just that comfortable, stumbling in the darkness of your own ignorance to the wave of progress?

VB: Think about it, boys. And now, with the pleasantries out of the way, time for a bit of music. We've got a good, good program lined up, all just for you, you desert soldiers~! First off, we've got an instrumental--it's Robbie Bledsoe, with his hit single "Roll on through"

The ability to disrupt the enemy's casters would be useful, but I think it hinges not only on our ability to utilize Ibonyte, but our knowledge of their arcane arts as well. While we may have an abundance of the former, our knowledge of the random magicks of this world is lacking.

" Well about the Zeon Gas, you'd have to realize that the base ingredient for it is a rare fungus that thrives naturally in dead environments and the Kashir are not beyond collecting rare and bizarre flora and fauna themselves so I doubt they are strangers to the same Deathshrooms we use to harvest them.

As for the process needed to make Zeon gas, it is my firm belief that with enough chemical processes and ibonyte on their side, the Kashir are able to replicate our formulas as-is so taking them from a dead halberd or two is not impossible. What truly bothers me is that it does require high levels of sophisticated technology to integrate such a weapon, much less harness it. Zeon gas isn't something that can be easily transported or used out of the box.

It is also my firm belief that the Aeon Armor that has assaulted us in Dagram was not an accidental encounter. Aeon HAS been trying many different plots to oust the current Voss lineage, inciting those traitor-nobles included.

I read a bit through the action reports from Dagram. That Aeoni armor--looks it wasn't captured as we originally thought. Could it be possible the holy men loaned their armored suits to the Kashir? If yes, it begs the question of just how desperate those Church of Alexander is to combat us at every turn. What would motivate them to adopt an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" mentality? Do they want us all dead that badly, and if yes, why so? What do they have against the current ruling bloodline?

The Von Voss's line is no stranger to attempts on their life. It is in fact a miracle at all that Vilkas turned up when he did, born to a foreigner.

It is because of this that noblehouses who were poised to take over the crown, definitely has a finger in every plot, all the easier for Alexandria to penetrate through to our higher levels I would imagine.

It's also well known that after the Conquest of the 4 Corners, Aeon has not been the greatest of sports about having to sign a peace treaty with Von Voss after a much heated rivalry took place between the kingdoms.

So when it comes to war, Aeon is no stranger to "teasing" us every now and again, but the idea of treachery towards the royal crown may also include other Royal lines and those who hold great political power.

Controlling the Death Gods could give us an edge, instead of outright destruction. One Death God can tell us a lot, but two can tell us so much more. Destroying these entities and picking up the pieces nets us a small gain; keeping them alive could prove to be more profitable in the long run. Deus knows about the Kashir, about Hassan. We keep her alive, we may get out more knowledge on the Kashir as a whole, possibly even acquire Hassan's possible hiding place.

And while we're talking about Deus, has Jack met her yet? It might be of interest for Oderkonn to see how the two interact.

In that case, I have a bit of a proposal. We'll need to construct some sort of cage for it to work, though. The basic idea is to wake up Deus, keep her frozen--or at least complacent--in the cage with the Eye of Shiva, and then explain to her our intentions, give her a bit to explain herself, possibly even have Jack come in and have him and her talk it out. If she proves stubborn, we can put her under again, or the Commander could eliminate her outright. Otherwise, we could have Oderkonn begin with our attempts at indoctrination.

Cotton paints a hopeful scenario, and obviously we're all aware of the risk. But suppose we do gain an ally. Gods know that she only needs to talk to Vilkas once.

We can use her or even the presence of her and that alone should send the Empire to a fast death. The Kashir still have 2 Deathgods left and thusfar we've paid hell to make that number a possibility, so do we go forward with the same pattern or do we risk arming our next offensive completely outgunning the Kashir in both Gods and Men ?

Should allow them to fire their grenades / molotovs a much greater distance (especially with the high powered Elephant gun), and perhaps with increased rating as well.

Both Energy Physicists, an Alchemist, and the Micro Mechanik should work on this. This leaves eight of our scientists for other projects. I have a few research ideas that may be profitable:

    >Mushroom and Pumpkin Cultivation

Basic concept is to slap Ibonyte onto Quemist's mushrooms and Jack's Pumpkins and see what happens. Ideally, the project has 3 objectives: the acceleration of growth rate of mushrooms and pumpkins; the creation of more potent, faster-growing mushroom varieties and pumpkins through the cross-breeding of of different mushroom and pumpkin cultivars, thereby improving our presently existing strains; and the possible creation of new, mutant strains of pumpkins and mushrooms.

    >Combat drugs

General research into the creation of potent stimulants and painkillers. Ideally, these drugs would be highly potent, with a low chance of addiction and minimal side effects. Withdrawal effects should not be too severe as to place a front line soldier's life in more danger that it already is. The objectives of this project would be to create drugs that could induce a temporary boost to mobility and actions performed in a single phase, thereby increasing soldier survivability in less than ideal situations. The drugs could be adminstered through either a surgically implanted device directly into the bloodstream or through the usage of specially designed syringes.

    >Advanced Genetics/ Advanced Cybernetics

In the same vein as combat drugs, this project would lead to the creation of genetic enhancements available to the Royal Guard. These enhancements would make the average Royal Guardsman faster, stronger, better in every way, albeit not as powerful as any Deadspec or Masterclass soldier. Genetics research would add a permanent bonus to movement and actions, ideally.

On the other hand, Advanced Cybernetics would involve the enhancement of the Royal Guard through the usage. Bone strengthening, muscle enhancement, advanced prosthetics--Advanced Cybernetics could become an umbrella program for specific projects to take hold. Ibonyte could be used as a power source, binding agent, or both for these cybernetics, allowing the enhancements to take hold more naturally.

    Nighttime Combat:
Because the Stargazer's sight is limited during the night, their view is instead pulled to the heavens above where the sea of stars allows them to summon a celestial from the heavenly bodies. Ensure that the Celestials are within view this month to gain their audience, and simply call on their power with a 2-4 line Rhymes. If a Celestial is insulted from your request, their retribution maybe fatal so ensure that a flawless poem is prepared, ensuring that our friends are not targeted indiscriminately.

    I will demonstrate,
The August Skies are out and the Southern Crown is within sight so calling on it's power should be appropriate this moon.

" Southern Crown, watch over this night

First things first: at Gorgon Fortress, I found something in the sand--an amulet that Fran called the Eye of Shiva. This helped us defuse what could have been a potential disaster. I was wondering if you might know more about this object? Fran described its capabilities as "being able to freeze enemies caught within its gaze" or something to that effect.

Secondly, there is a matter that has kept most everyone on the base on-edge. We managed to incapacitate a Death God--she's currently unconscious, but we pretty much determined that the only way that we could enlist her as an ally was if we mind-wiped her. I was wondering if you know know if there were some possible alternative method we could use to...coercing her to work with us.

Cotton; what you've come across seems to be a Charm that us mystics would collect and treasure.
While our practice doesnt allow us to have a need for possession, it is said that these Charms contain within them the tiniest wrinkle of the universe which allows them to do what they do.

What you have is the Eye of Shiva, said to be used by a once powerful Gazer who one night managed to stare into the destroyer god. Fatal was her stare, that she immediately removed her own eye instantly as a humble gesture of apology. Those who are caught in its gaze will freeze immediately, much like the cold vacuum of the night sky. Furthermore, this prosthetic is made whole once it has been inserted into the wearer's eye.

    Scary no ?

Zel scribbles notes as his assistants finish bolting and welding what looks like a sizable heap of junk. The cobbled together mess appears to be several rings of wire looping around a couple of poles with a metal sphere on top of each, each on either side of a metal arch wrapped in coiled cables. A second, similar arch stands 3 feet behind the main arch, the archs connected by rails with inward facing dishes. Lightning arcs between the poles periodically.

As the machine is fully assembled to the zcifax's specifications, Zel moves behind a control console located behind what is hopefully an unnecessary blast shield.

He begins slowing turning some dials, eyeing the gauges used for monitoring levels of power input and radiaton.

"This machine," Zel begins for those present for the demonstration, "/should/, when the subject steps into the first gate, douse the subject with rays that shift the subject's flux just slightly so that it resembles the ectoplasmic patterns of our Haunts and other ghosts. Doing this for as long as say, only the time it takes to walk through the first gate to second, should cause the shift to be very temporary (the flux naturally resists such attempts to alter it in this manner, and will quickly stabilize itself without the continuous exertions of outside influence). Enough for the subject to move as fast as the Haunt and reach any place in the field. The benefits to such a device would bring to our mobility should be apparent. For this test, we will send only one person through. Now, we begin!"

Zel points to a person at the side and motions toward the machine.
