YOU ARE ALEX RASTON. And your team just one the second round of the Tournament. Two down, Four to go.

As your cores are once again loaded for maintenance, you're greeted by the three most important ladies in your life. Your Mother looks somewhere between angry, confused and exasperated. Elsie looks vaguely annoyed. Ari looks like she's TRYING to support them, and failing miserably.

"Alex," Your Mother says "Was saying all that to the other team strictly necessary?"

"Didn't tell you how I met Cass did I? Or them either actually."

We haven't won yet, so a victory dinner's a tad premature, especially when our most recent victory was against a bunch of mooks who literally beat themselves. Better to go talk to Zack, see how the other colonists feel about all this nonsense (especially given that as the de-facto civilian leader he's more or less our boss, we're just the secretary of defense).

And come on. Leave our own mom stewing in a puddle of awkwardness? That's not cool. We may be a troll, but I'd like to think we're not a total ass.

Yeah, but I feel like a nice dinner out isn't really in the spirit of this particular victory.

Now, getting the pilots and some friends and family together for a few (or a few too many) beers and watching the replay of the Tunnel Snakes owning themselves while tossing insults and popcorn at the screen MST3K-style? That seems like a more appropriate celebration to me.

Simply put, I don't think we can actually sympathize with his situation because we probably don't understand it, or at least he won't think we do. This guy has to try and stretch money as tight as it can go to try and make sure everyone has food, shelter, so on and so forth. He probably gets complaints day in and day out from people who don't have enough, who need more, stupid spats due to stress because of the current situation, making sure he doesn't fuck up and ruin everything going on, making sure other people don't take advantage of the situation to fuck them up, etc.

Simply stated, while we do indeed have the weight of community on our shoulders and the threat of a horrible death if we fuck up, possibly the death of the settlement if we mess up, this guy feels it more than us because he's actually down there in the trenches dealing with it day in and day out. How often do you think he's able to go for a drink, or watch a movie, or tell jokes, or make horrible plans for a cheesy anime in an ill-fated get rich quick scheme?

Dude deals with stressed out people every day trying to make sure that not only do they have enough to pay off the land they're on, but also that it gets fixed up, they have food, water, and possibly some comfort. He has to deal with people who would still be grieving, still angry at the hand fate dealt them, still in shock from the whole situation.

My take on the situation, at least.

    "Yeah?"

"With what our team is doing to go out and raise money, between the televised Arena matches and such and the work out of the Raven's nest.... we're slowly becoming something like local celebrities."

    "And you came to.... brag?"

"Actually, I was wondering if you had an idea as to how we might leverage it."

    "....Explain."

"Well for one thing, if we're going to be people's first impression of Hope, I'd like us to actually represent them. If they feel a certain way about a topic on the whole, it would be bad for me to start championing the other side. Also, we might be able to score some sort of sponsorships, do commercials, something."

"Huh. That's.... huh. I really should have thought of that. I must be more tired than I realized."

    "You should get some sleep."

"Yeah... as for how the people feel, I'll try and figure that out later. Pass along what I can."

    "Thanks, Zack."

"Hey, how are the colonists doing?"

"Well... nobody's really too happy. Luckily there hasn't been any serious discontent partly because they're still in shock over what happened, and partly because you guys are a visible example of us trying to do something to help them. They know it takes money, and they see you earning it. Right now, we've got enough seeded in the community that nobody's suffering too bad. People are getting fed, people have cloths, a roof over their head in one form or another, they got the running water.... but not much more than the essentials. But we have those at least. With the kids coming out to play, people trying to set up something like a class, people going around in teams trying to clean up houses and do the minor repairs... it's starting to look like a community again. We still need money, a lot of it, if we want to make it stick. But right now? Our people can LIVE again. And it's thanks to you guys."

"And you. If things are that good you're clearly working miracles with what we're pulling in."

"Just doing my best, hoping that it's enough."

    "Know that feeling."

After a couple of vague assurances that he's fine and you threatening to send your Mother to pester him into getting enough sleep and eating properly, you head home. As late as it is you just grab a quick dinner and make sure Ari's on her way home to keep an eye on your Mom before hitting the sack. Elsie crawls in next to you, and before long you fall asleep into each other.

You come to slowly, the sound of your cockpit struggling to come back to life. Some part of you knows it's a lost cause, and you take a deep breath and try to re-orient yourself before you bail.

You take a moment to look at your reflection, to check for injuries.

You see a small bump on your head, and see that otherwise you're fine after brushing your bangs out of your face, and feel an odd sense of Deja Vu as you do so.

Your coms come to life suddenly. "Liz? Hey Liz, are you alright? Can you hear me?"

"Yeah Will, I can hear you." You groan. "Mind yelling a bit less? I have a BITCH of a headache right now."

"Sorry." He responds, much calmer but just as urgent. "Come on, get out of that thing. Rest of Eagle Squad's already chased off the bandits, so as soon as you get out of there we can haul it in for repairs. Mitch is coming over with a Rover to pick you up now.

You curse as you get out of the core. Partly because the harness got caught on your bra during the auto-retract and attempted to smother you with your own breasts, and partly because you have a ten minute long ride with Mitch back to the carrier.

You hop into the back seat. Mitch looks disappointed for a second, and then the creepy smug look returns.

He never seems to look you in the eye for some reason. God knows why he wants to stare at your chest, not like he can read emotion or gain some deeper insight into humanity.

"Alright my lady," he says, switching to an irritatingly fake British accent. "Why shall we be going then?"

".... what do you mean? You came to take me back home." His eyebrows dance, what the hell. "Come on, let's get on back to base."

He seems disappointed. Then rallies quickly "TALLY HO!" and floors the pedal. Given the state of the terrain, you immediately buckle up so as not to be thrown violently from the vehicle.

On the way there, he keeps looking back in the rear-view mirror. You aren't sure why, you're sorta blocking the view. Luckily he dosen't try to make conversation, and before long you're back to base. You see a recovery chopper already out-bound to get your rig as you park the vehicle. Mitch thankfully excuses himself to his bunk, lazy sod, and you go and ask Will if it's time for your debriefing. The rest of the bridge crew begins to laugh uproariously, Will just quietly puts his face in his hands.

[ ] Laugh along, apparently you missed a good one.
[ ] Wait for it to die down, ask again.
[ ] Drag Will out of this. Professionalism will happen somewhere else if it won't happen here.

    Wait!

My mind just clicked, and the gears turned. The twins, they have something to do with the character swap, don't they? We control the other of which they aren't messing with with whatever they do. They referenced a man and a woman, I'm guessing they mean Alex and Liz. They did something to Liz, and now they're doing it to Alex. Whatever it is.

Add that with the oddity of how the others are treating us as Alex, at least Elsie that is, and this... What, are we actually playing as Alex, or are we body surfing here with the Twins? From what is implied in the previous threads, I'm guessing we're playing the "real" them while they do... Something with the bodies.

"Don't know how, but clearly the Ice Devils KNEW we were coming they also moved way to professionally to be the same standard grunts. Either they're training them better, or they had some outside help. We got to the village, it was already cleared out, and they had a couple AC's on the tundra hidden. By the time we saw them..."

"You were set in a perfect ambush position for them then?"

"More or less. they all had the same Blue/white paint-job as the rest of the Devils but... something was different about them."

"I'd say. they crippled your core and killed two of your squad mates."

"Yeah... anyway, the Village was empty when we got there. Given what we know now, it was probably a lure to damage the wolf pack's presence in the Area. Since it's been almost three hours, they're clearly long gone. And since our garrison is the smallest, they might be using this to try and start something bigger."

"Then they'll fail. Thank you Lieutenant, go get some food and some rest. I'll deal with the paper-work."

You nod, and don't notice the way his eyes seem to linger for a split second before he returns to the bridge amid cheers.

You move to the showers. On a cruiser this size, they're co-opted, but that's better than no shower at all. Thankfully nobody's there when you walk in, they tend to trip over themselves and cut your shower time short what with you having to rush them to the infirmary after they crack their head-open on the counter or something.

As you start to rinse off, you hear the door open, and peeking out, you see your friend Abby. "Hi Abby."

    "Hey Liz. You feeling alright?"

    "Fine, why?"

"Well it's just... you forgot to grab a spare change of cloths from the look of things."

"Damn. I don't ant to put those back on either, I saw combat in them so they're all musty and sweaty. Guess I'll have to walk back to my buck in a towel."

"Uh... I don't think that's the best idea."

"Why not?" you ask, walking out of the shower and grabbing a towel. Abby turns and locks the door, which you think was kinda mean. What if somebody else wanted to go for a quick shower?

"Just... some people aren't as.... open, as you are."

    "Open?"

"Or maybe oblivious is a better term..." she mumbles to herself. "just, wait here, I'll get you something."

When you get back to the bunk, you see that Abby is there waiting for you. "Hey Ab. What's up?"

"I... kinda wanted to talk to you about something. You have a minute?"

"Sure." You sit down on the bunk, and listen to her. She stutters and meanders through a couple of topics. Eventually she says something about the showers, but by that point you've already lost the battle with your eyelids, and were sinking slowly into the bunk beside her while she went on with something to do with feelings.

'This is important', you think to yourself, as you feel your body getting heavier by the second. 'she ants to talk about important things, and you need to listen and stay awazzzzzzzzzz'.....

    >Oh I've known people like this.

    >They aren't stupid, they're just focused on something other than romance SO HARD that it never occurs to them.

    >Seriously, I've known like six. They're certainly the exception to the rule, but they're hilariously baffling.

    >Honestly, it might be some low-grade mental disorder actually. They are far from stupid, but they just.... never brought it up unless someone else did first.

...you ARE aware that we met Liz when her core got fucked up and that we haven't seen her fly, right? We have no useful information to determine her skill as a pilot.

she is going to be like a pippen to jordan

    trunks to a gohan

    a batman to a superman

a left hand to a right hand.

oh SURE base her skills on how MESSED UP her core is after a fight, that seems a totally FAIR way to sum up someones skills.

Oh, right. Those guys. Guess that means Liz is at least B rank, probably higher.

That said, we don't know what kind of style she has. If I had to guess I'd say it's either really aggressive (melee and close-in guns like I like to fly), or a really focused sniper or support style.
