YOU ARE ALEX RASTON. Out of the corner of your eye you see Ari glance back as she walks home, while Elsie grabs you and gives you a kiss on the cheek.

"How long do you intend to beat lessons into her?" She asks, half jokingly. You ever think maybe there's a better way?"

My priority is to make sure she's prepared for whatever comes her way. No matter what I do one day I am going to have to relent and put her on active missions, my job is to make sure she lives through those long enough to get actual experience. If you have any good ideas I'd love to hear them.

"Why, do you have a better plan?" You ask with a wry smile.

"Maybe reward her for doing well?"

"Her reward for doing well is being allowed to pilot."

"So what, the reward for work well done is more work?"

"God it sure feels that way, doesn't it?" you ask, a note of weariness creeping into your voice.

She pulls you in close, and the two of you head off to bed.

You wake up the next morning to Dave cooking breakfast. At the table Laurie informs you that you have about two hours before you have to go to the Arena.

"I just hope they aren't connected to that group in Alaska. If Dervish and his friends are anything to judge by, they're going to be fucking hardcore." Dave observes.

"What we do know is that apparently they prefer mid-weight cores, and focus on team based tactics." Mooch adds "If the last match is anything to judge by they're doing this good not because of individual skill, but because they compliment each other as a team that well."

    "So what, divide and conquer?"

"Either that or we do something like a VIP match so we only have to take out one of them. We need to upset the team dynamic somehow. If I were an evil man I might suggest forcing one of them to get subbed in with an alternate."

If we do a team match, we need to drop that lancer first, or errybody's gettin' raped out here.
If we divide and conquer like Mo Betta tried on us then it's a matter of figuring out who's best to counter that lancer, I'd say that's probably us, since we just need to dodge a charge and then do an Alpha Strike up his tailpipe.

Judging from this, the Chain Gun guy probably runs a mean distraction. The spear and board guy charges people when they're distracted, probably not wanting to be out in the open, and not wanting to be ganged up on nor attacked from a distance. He most likely overcharges with his spear into the back of unsuspecting ACs. The last guy is the heavy artillery/nuke, who attacks people and generally wrecks their day if they aren't careful.

The spear guy is dangerous, due to him being a "rogue" type AC most likely, in that he will fuck you up when you don't see him. Taking him out will be hard since I bet the other two will give him cover fire and distract while he maneuvers into a better position.

    >>19034919

Ok, our goal is to negate their teamwork advantage. If we can pull that off through game type that'd be pretty awesome but we have to plan for that not actually happening.

We're going to have to split them up, the one with the spear seems like it'll be the easiest to drag off from them, present targets that look like good charging opportunities and lure it away.

The heavy probably uses chaff to prevent locks on it's buds and uses the beam rifles to tie people down while the leader keeps them distracted with a hail of bullets. We need to get the lancer in a position where it can't be covered by those two or take it out in a surprise attack.

I agree on the 1v1 fights, but we need to take into consideration that the wolf pack is from Alaska. They probably practice more on certain types of terrain. So we should try and push for terrian that is not native to Alaska (not mountains, plains or forest). For the fights I would say

    US vs Lancer
    Dave vs Heavy Beam Rifles
    Laurie vs Chain Gun

Why not send Dave against the Lancer though? Dave is specialized for melee combat, so is the Lancer, so wouldn't it be best to have him take on the Lancer? The Lancer against us would want to get into our face ASAP, which will screw us over because we're built for mid-range. Dave is built for close range, and wouldn't care if he was in that dude's face.

    I'd instead suggest...

    Dave Vs. Lancer
    Us Vs. Chain Gun
    Laurie Vs. Beam Rifle Guy

Laurie can dodge the rifles and probably avoid the chuff, we can deal with the mid ranged dude in our favored range, and Dave can go Dave on the lancer.

    >>19035152
If we put Dave up against Lancer then it becomes a sudden death contest. It'll charge him and the question will be if he is able to dodge its Lance, which has reach, and put a hole in it with the heat rod or if it'll catch him and take him down. It turns it into almost a coin flip, which I'd rather avoid.

Yeah you have a point with Dave vs Lancer, that is going to be a really quick battle, but I think its the best option, also remember this guy has a shield, Dave to the best of my knowledge does not have any defensive capability's other then dodging.

If the rocket punch screws up though, then Laurie isn't at the range to avoid getting smashed like the bandit. The Lancer will get in your face, that you can be assured of, even if it is just him trying to stab you on an overboosted pass. I still suggest Dave.

"I don't know if there's a connection or anything, but apparently the enemy leader's a Captain James Brenner."

He's silent for a moment. "You're sure about this?"

"I got the info from Dervish. I don't think he'd lie about it, hell he seemed surprised when I mentioned it was your last name."

    "...."

"Hey Laurie? Talk to me man. Last time you got like this it ended with you trying to drink yourself to death and then attacking me."

"My Dad.... you know how your Dad disappeared? First responder or whatever when all the shit went south?"

    "Yeah?"

"My Dad vanished too. Two days prior to that."

    "...."

"Him and my mom argued about something, and then the next day, everyone was all quiet. The day after everything went to hell. We stayed there for almost a month in that shit hole that used to be our home before my mom got the bright idea to head east and find a new place to live. We left, and we found Hope a few weeks later. My Mom passed away two days after we got there from some infection she picked up along the way. the thing I remember most about that? My dad not coming back. I always assumed a building fell on him or something, I mean even if he hated us he'd want to make sure if we were dead right? Who the fuck just walks away?"

    >Say something? If so, what?

I don't know man, he could have good reasons, he could have bad reasons, he could just be a complete scumfuck.

I really don't know what to say other than I'm sorry this happened to you. I really am.

Some sort of combination of these would be good.
I think most of us were not able to come up with stuff and were waiting to see what others would come up with, as tend to happen when we have emotionally heavy what say prompts.

".... Do you want to see if you can talk to him?"

    "Before or after the match?"

"Whichever you want. Way I see it, even if it's not him.... Brenner isn't exactly a common last name. The two of you might be related in some other way."

"....Maybe. Yeah, maybe after the fight we'll look into it. Right now? Let's focus on the match."

    "Alright. You ready to go?"

"Ready as I'll ever be. Dave's core is already loaded, and they're doing yours now. We should be ready to roll in five."

You see Elsie watching your core get clamped into place. You walk down beside her, and put an arm around her.

"Two more matches." She states plainly.

    "Yep."

"Really think you can win this one?"

"It's starting to look like we might. But these guys aren't going to be easy, they already weeded out the weaklings."

She nods. Then she pulls you in close and gives you a long slow kiss. "For luck." She says as she lets you go. "Now go kick their ass." She adds with a smile. You look at her and you remember how scared and uncertain she was when you first got together.... what a week and a half ago? Two weeks? Christ, it feels longer than that. You climb onto the transport and see Dave smile at you.

    "Feels good doesn't it?"

    "What does?"

"Having something to fight for. Not like some terrible burden, but.... motivation. It's a reason to go out and do. Like back in Hope."

After a moment you realize he's kinda right. The people who depend on you have roofs over their heads, aren't starving..... it's like the burden that was killing you is suddenly gone. Your own smile seems uncertain at first, but then you realize it's probably the first genuine smile you've worn since you got here.

It DOES feel good. Maybe the old Hope isn't so dead after all.
