    We are LIVE, everybody!

For those of you not in the know, this is FIST OF SHADOW QUEST, a martial arts/magical assassin quest to find your master in a strange world you know nothing about. You are Shun, apprentice of Sifu Tong, master of the ancient art of assassination – The Fist of Shadow. It’s a style that emphasizes quick, focused movements to quickly eliminate an enemy and use his force against him.

The old threads are here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Fist%20of%20Shadow
It’s getting a little longer, but it shouldn’t take too long to read if you’re interested!

For those of you who missed last time, we had dinner with High Master Blaine and Khan, and he said he would pay us to assassinate the ever loving shit out of Master Richards because he's kind of a dick. We would've planned our attack out, but he got the drop on us by gassing us in our sleep and sending 100 guards to capture us. Next thing we know, we're awake in his tower about to be experimented on. We busted out, wounded him, and stumbled across Jeanne, the girl we fought in the tournament.

Here's a list of moves you know and can learn: http://pastebin.com/3bUwNDW2
Feel free to reference it whenever.

Inventory: 5 wooden shurikens, 1 dose of Heaven Berries, 385 gp (9914 in the bank), a pendant of Ward Fear, 1 emerald gem, two medical kits, about ten feet of rope, 3 healing potions, a watch, and a compass, 5 masterwork throwing daggers, belt of GO FAST (+1 to attack and defense).

NOTE: You don't have your bag on you, so you don't have any of this.

NOTE NOTE: My computer is totally fixed now. Huzzah!

I watch them bring him into the Room from behind the bars. Him. The one who beat me.

He’s bleeding, his insides are almost spilling out, his dark skin shining in the dim light of the hallway. Is Master going to save him, like he did with me? I try to remember, but… No. No, he told me not to. He’s brought to the Room, the safe Room where Master saves people. But if he saves them, then why do some of them scream? Aren’t they happy to be alive? I sit in the stony corner, looking at the shadows. He used shadows to beat me. But Master said I was the strongest there ever was.
    So he was wrong?

    Master could be wrong?

It’s all I’ve been thinking about since I woke up. He’s never been wrong. Never. Even when I was a child and he beat me and I thought he was wrong, he wasn’t wrong. I owe him my life. But… that man. Shun? Is it Shun? He proved Master wrong. Wrong.

When you think about a word a lot, it makes you think. Wrong.

    Wrong.

    Wrong.

It doesn’t even look right anymore. I hear yelling. That’s not new. It never was. But… wait, was that Master? Is he okay? His throat was cut! Master!? He doesn’t hear me… he never does. I slump back into my corner and look outside. Footsteps. What? A shadow passes over me, and just as quickly as it was, it isn’t. But… it comes back. It’s him.

The one who beat me. Who proved Master wrong. He stands in front of me, tall and broad. His black eyes look into me… He came back for me. For… me? Why? No one’s ever done that before… I don’t mean anything. I just fight. That’s… that’s all. Isn’t it? I look at him. The one who beat me. And I feel something strange inside of me… what is it? Why do I feel like I’ve done something right? Was it because I lost to him? Is that why I feel…

    Pride?

You look down at the slender brunette behind the bars, slumped in the corner, blankly staring at her. What on earth is Jeanne doing here? Is she an experiment? Was she captured like you? You have so many questions… but Richards is getting away. On the other hand, you have no idea about what’s in this tower.

    Should you free Jeanne?

"Jeanne? What are you doing here?"

"Do you want to get out?"

Watch her reaction if she doesn't seem to be very eager to leave this place, I'm not sure that we should risk freeing her before we deal with Richards.
    >> Student !!+u5zzp0LPDj 05/11/12(Fri)12:20 No.19067379
You blink and call out to the dazed girl. "Jeanne? What are you doing here?" She stares at you, blue eyes drifting in and out of focus. She opens her mouth as if to speak, but nothing comes out. She quickly shuts it and continues staring at you. It’s a little creepy. "Do you want to get out?" Her eyebrows crease as her eyes look at the ground. She keeps her mouth shut. Well, dammit. It was worth a shot. You walk down the hallway to confront Richards while he’s still weak…

And a ratting from behind startles you. Facing the noise, you see Jeanne up against the bars, hands white from clenching the metal so hard. She stills says nothing, but her eyes look… faintly pleading.

    >"Jeanne, you cannot speak or does not want to?"

Fuck. "or DO not want to?"

Anyway, maybe we should free her? I really want to, hopefully she will not start obeying Richards the moment she sees her.

Smiling fondly at her, you speak to her like a brother would do to a little sister. "Jeanne, who is Richards to you?"

Again, she opens her mouth, and closes it, shaking her head. She puts her hand on her arm and rubs it, facing the corner. Hmmm…

"Jeanne, you cannot speak or don’t want to?"

Gazing back at you, she shrugs. You’ve heard her before, why isn’t she saying anything now? You weigh your options. She could be useful, but Richards might have some sort of hold on her. The torch behind you makes shadows dance across her strangely beautiful face. Maybe you should set her free.

"If you promise not to hurt me now or in the future, I will free you, alright?"

Still emotionless, she nods. Your paranoia tells you that this is a bad idea as you slice the bars open with a shadow knife. Oh well, you can deal with the consequences later. Stepping out of her cage, Jeanne looks around, taking the hallway in. She looks at you and shies away for a moment. Man… Richards did a number on her. All the better reason to kill him.

    (Jeanne has joined your party.)

Look at other cells and say
"...Richards is going to pay for what he did to you, me and all other people he made suffer."

"Jeanne, I do not know what he did to you but I can tell that it wasn't anything nice. I can guess that you have been here for years being experimented on by that monster.
Look, I'm going to make him answer for what he did. I would like your help, you were an amazing opponent and I would be honored to have you by my side but if you wont help me, I hope that at least you will not impede me.
Now, lets go. We're wasting too much time already!"

Follow Richards trail. Pick up the pace even more.

You look around at the other cells… abominations, screaming men, body parts… it’s disgusting. A deep, dark rage wells up from inside you, but you stay calm and focused. You need to. "Richards is going to pay for what he did to you, me and all other people he made suffer." Still, Jeanne just stares. What’s going on in her head? "Jeanne, I do not know what he did to you but I can tell that it wasn't anything nice. I can guess that you have been here for years being experimented on by that monster.” She slowly blinks. “Look, I'm going to make him answer for what he did. I would like your help, you were an amazing opponent and I would be honored to have you by my side but if you won’t help me, I hope that at least you will not impede me.” Nodding, she stays where she is, ignoring the monstrosities in the cells around her. “Now, let’s go. We're wasting too much time already!"

You take off down the hall! Coming out of the hallway, a set of stairs goes up and down, a trail of blood leading up. It’s Richards’. Sprinting upstairs, you run past a window and glance outside. You can see for miles, you have to be close to the top…!

Busting down the wooden door at the top of the stairs with a kick, you enter just in time to see Richards undoing a chain… that leads up to the collar of some massive ball of… what the hell is that? It looks like an orb with six eye stalks coming off of it, a massive eye in the middle of it.

Richards, covered in blood but healed, yells out to it. “Handle him, my beast!” He doesn’t seem to have noticed Jeanne, who still hasn’t entered the room. A quick glance back shows that she’s cowering.

    Shit.

Hmm... she doesn't have weapons, does she? I don't remember if she summoned them during the tournament or if she had them beforehand.

If she agrees, ignore the beast and go directly after Richards. I assume we already have shadowburst mode which, along with other things, gives us speed boost. Shoot shadow needles while running up to him, aim for the legs after catching up, go for the kill without hesitation.

He's probably talking about the Belt of Speed, which we don't have.

As interesting as all these pep talks for Jeanne may be, we're kinda pressed for time right now. Obviously this multi-eyed beast is in our way. The most obvious answer is to blind it. We have no reason to hold back anymore, so throw a shitton of shadow needles in its eyes.

Also, I will be dipping in and out of the thread since I'm busy moving between dorm rooms (more like apartment suites) on campus. Fortunately, it's a very short walk between my new and old place. Still, my responses will be a little delayed.

You look back. “Jeanne, can you take care of that beast while I deal with Richards?" She says nothing and curls up into a ball. Goddammit, at least she isn’t in your way.

Richards smoothly taunts you, “Do you like it, Shun? It took quite some time to engineer, but it’s beautiful, isn’t it?” It roars and its spindly stalks wave around, before they all look at you! You take off, darkness empowering your every step! Around you, rays and beams fire off, but you’re too fast! It’s going to run out of juice soon…

Shit, it’s spraying beams everywhere! One of them hits you square in the chest as you leap up at the beast, hand black, ready to strike! But… shit, you can’t feel any connection to the shadows anymore! What just happened? Instead of blinding the beast, you just smash it in the central eye with your palm, and it bellows in pain! Where are your shadows? Why aren’t they answering you? “Ooooh, your shadows are magic, are they? I’ll have to note that while I’m picking your brain apart!” What’s he talking about?

Wait… did it dispel your magic?

Put out the light source, in complete darkness it will be hard to dispel our magic.

Also, are there things around that can be used as weapons? Chairs or other shit.

If we can't take out the light source, then we should evade and take cover, I think we will be able to regain control of shadows in few moments, then we should turn on the Shadow Burst mode, forget about the magically immune Beholder and go directly at Richards.

You need to press this while you’re close! Grabbing the chain, you swing it at the beast, which swiftly dodges your strike! “Are you really trying to fight my Gauth? You’re even more moronic than I thought!”

Whatever, you’ll show him. You swing it around, dodging the blasts while Richards cackles manically, not even bothering to help his creation. After a few seconds, something in your head clicks. Instinctively, you kick off, shadows augmenting your jump! You’re in the air above the Gauth, and you swing your chain down…

It wraps around the orb! Pulling hard on the chain, you crash down into it, smashing it into the ground! Dazed, it levitates back up, and you jerk the chain hard to the right… and it moves with you. You pull to the left… and it follows.

You are now riding a beholder.

You look to your left at the hanging lamp, the only source of light in the room. Glancing down at a very worried Richards, you grin evilly as you snuff out the light, bathing the area in total darkness. Beneath you, the Gauth snarls. Kicking it, it yelps and lights up the room as it starts spraying beams of magic wildly in every direction! Snapping the chain, you make it charge at Richards, who jumps to the side, causing you to smash into the wall! You’re fine, but your Gauth is bleeding pretty badly. Behind you, Richards’ arms are crackling with energy as he starts to make strange movements with his arms…!

The entire room is bathed in darkness, and we can control shadows that are in-a-way connected to us, right? The most straightforward response, assuming we know where Richards is (which I assume we do), is to manipulate the shadows directly surrounding him and pierce him from all sides with giant spikes.

He can’t move if he’s pierced, right? Summoning up all your power, you command the shadows around you to spike everything in the room…

“AAAGGH!” Success. Looking into the darkness, you see Richards on the ground, screaming, bleeding, holding his leg in agony. A massive hole gapes in his thigh. “You bastard! How could you do this to me!?” You gaze at him with pity. What a stupid question from a stupid man. He frantically looks around and remembers Jeanne outside. “Jeanne! Help me!” She looks up from the ground at him, face confused.

“Jeanne, I saved your life! You must help me!” At these words, her cerulean eye twitches and she stands up lifelessly and begins to walk into the room. Shit, this isn’t good!

You need to stay concentrated. You calmly say, "Talk to me, Jeanne." She stops dead in her tracks as a conflicted look grows on her young features. and secondly, a man has to make his way through the world somehow, Shun did not seek to be dragged into the tower but now that he has been he may as well take from one who no longer has a use for these items so his own way is easier. Grabbing Jeanne’s hand, you guide her downstairs and go back to the room you were contained in, looking for your bag. After a few seconds of looking, you see it! Opening it up, it looks like everything’s still here. Excellent! You have no idea what these potions do, but you stuff them into your bag anyway (Got 10 unidentified potions). It doesn't look like there's anything else here. You take Jeanne and run back out down the stairs… To your surprise, it leads to an elevator just like the one in Blaine’s tower. You wave him aside. "The matter has been discussed and squared away with Richards himself. He has called off any such investigation himself, as he found the claims were false and misconstrued. He said all further inquiries are to be sent to High Master Blaine himself. Master Richards is sorely tired from the ordeal and wishes to be left alone. If you'll excuse me." Surprisingly, he’s already waiting for you when you enter.

“Good morning, child of shadow.” As calm as ever, you see. His head turns towards Jeanne. “I heard about the raid last night. Judging by your appearance, you’ve escaped. And please don't "I did not have list etc etc", somehow Shun knew to not point out and compliment what big boobs Erin has. He should be able to discern what things are appropriate to say to powerful people, considering he was raiding by an extremely powerful man. I doubt even Sifu would tolerate his skills being called "tricks"

I'm not that bothered that we might have lost more skills (it is unclear if we could have gotten more anyway) I was fine with shadow pocket space and money. Hopefully Blaine will not hold it against us.

Hey, sorry if I sound too pissed off. I do not intent to, it was other players' (me included) fault too for not giving better option and I can understand being high on excitement after such a badass mission could skewer perception a bit.

You glance back at the slim girl behind you who tries to stay out of the conversation. "Jeanne, the three-time grand champion of the Gold Tournament, is, or was, Richards's greatest project, it seems. Now she is without a home and a caretaker. She is with me for the time being." You turn your attention back to Blaine, who passively looks at her, the same way he looks at everything.

“She appears to have significant mental issues. I can only imagine the horrors Richards put her through.” At the mention of Richards’ name, you feel the air behind you grow tense. “I believed that she was a quiet being, or intimidated by me, not that she was mute.” Blaine crosses his arms in contemplation. “Is there anything about her that I should know?”
    Hmm. Good question.

I really know about as much as you do. Aside from her being a scared girl whose life was torn apart by a mad scientist I can't really think of anything.

Given that she won three times in a row, and it's an annual tournament Richards must have been doing his experiments for over 4 years. Someone should have been there for her.

You shrug. "You likely know as much as I do right now, High Master. Given that she’s won the tournament three times in a row, those experiments must’ve gone on for… at least four years.” You look behind you at the teenager. “Someone should’ve been there for her.”

Blaine nods. “Do not worry, we will be. It is a deep shame that Richards engaged in such experiments, but this is perhaps his greatest offense. The greatest mental health diagnostics in the world are at my disposal, and I shall ensure that she will be looked well after in our care. I…” Blaine trails off as you feel two female hands clenching on your cloak, holding as if their lives depended on it. Craning your head, you see Jeanne grasping your dark blue cloak, trembling…

Dammit, Richards, what did you do…?

It's probably for the best that I stay with her for now as her primary caregiver given her trust of me and my sense of responsibility towards her.

You can’t just leave her behind. You don’t think she could handle it. You turn back to the dark mask. "With your permission, High Master, it's probably best I stay with her for now. I'm the only other familiar face she has left."

For a moment, the room is silent. “She seems to have a fixation on you.” He pauses. “Very well. It is her choice to accompany you, and I have no power to stop her.” Wow. You were expecting some sort of resistance, but he seems very acquiescent to her wishes.

You crack a smile as you feel Jeanne behind you lighten up. “Perhaps now we can show her Terec in the sunlight and let her see it as a magnificent city rather than the prison it has been for her.”

The mask glances at Jeanne. “Perhaps you can show her the world, student of darkness.”

    Perhaps you can.

Silence reigns in the obsidian room. The mask speaks. “I did see it. It felt wrong. Evil, in a sense. But… there are no records of it. Whatever it is, it must be investigated posthaste.” Wow, it gave this guy the chills? Damn, that can’t be any good. You hope you don’t see it anytime soon. “Investigate I shall.” Blaine pauses. “Only after I handle this mess with Richards, however. The public will be outraged at his actions and attribute it to the Guild as a whole. I must be ready.” This guy’s always five steps ahead of everyone around him, isn’t he? “Child of Shadow.” Why does he call you that? You aren’t a child. You have a name. You know he uses names, why the hell is he so flowery about this? “Be here tomorrow at noon. You instruction begins then.” You nod and continue leaving. As soon as you get outside, you feel a tug on your sleeve. Looking over, Jeanne’s icy eyes dart from the ground to your face.

You hear her mumble something. “What is it, Jeanne?”

    A whisper. “Thank you.”

You bring Jeanne back to Ingrid’s Inn, which is as busy as ever. Surprisingly, Jeanne doesn’t seem to mind being in crowds at all. She acts like it’s not there, but it’s better than her freaking out, right? You decide that checking in the new guest with Ingrid might not be the best of ideas at the moment. When you get to your room, you realize that your bed is only big enough for one of you.

You don’t even think as you pick up Jeanne and put her on the bed. Throwing the blanket on her, she seems to understand what you’re trying to do and puts up no resistance. Good. Settling into the comfortable mattress, she falls asleep whispering a thanks to you. It warms your heart as you try and nap on the wooden floor. It’s far from comfortable, but you’ve slept on worse. You wake up a few hours later, light streaming through the empty pane where the glass window was. You’re a little glad Ingrid already took care of it.

Given how you're putting it probably Sifu Tong. Though getting to that level will be a long term thing, a very long term thing.

Now we have to start thinking of a technique to invent, my first thought is something similar to Shadow Blink or One with Shadow and is a reasonable place to take getting the new shadow pouch thing. Literally melting into the shadows and walking through them, popping out of any of them that sort of thing. We'll probably think of something more interesting when we get to that point though.

You stand in the obsidian tower, its owner lecturing you yet again.

It’s been six days since you started coming. The first thing you did when you woke up was get a two bed room for you and your new companion. Ingrid insisted that the damages were fine, the guards paid for everything. You’re glad that you didn’t have to worry about it.

Jeanne accompanied to your lessons you most of the time, but she seemed independent enough today to stay at the inn. That’s a step, at least. “You must reach into the elemental plane of shadows and shape a compartment to your will. Use your superior strength to force an emptiness in their universe. The plane will remain static, I assure you, few shift enough to destroy your items. The plane of shadow is more similar to its earthen counterpart than its smoky companion, surprisingly enough.” It makes sense; your shadow constructs always were remarkably solid. “You already can reach into it, now bend it. Mold it. It is yours to command.” Your arm digs into the shadows of the room. Your hand feels cold, deathly so, but for some reason it doesn’t hurt. Focusing your mind intently, you clench the darkness, forcing it to move around your hand… and it slowly budges.

Slowly, you reshape a universe you have never been in contact with. You bend it. You mold it. Soon enough, it is yours to command. To test it, your put a wooden shuriken in it and close the portal. You walk across the black room and dig back into the darkness. Hands closing around splintered wood, you pull out your shuriken! Hell yes!

The dark master of this domain nods at you. “Success at last. The next step is to open simultaneous portals and travel through them, but I am not the one who shall teach you that. Your training is done, shadow adept.” What, he won’t do any more? Eh, a deal’s a deal.

Without a word of goodbye, you go your separate ways. Blaine- to deal with the rising outrage of Richards’ experiments, the accusations of deceiving his people, and the death of one of the five Masters. You, on the other hand, depart to introduce Jeanne to Khan.

You chuckle as you head outside. You know this could end very poorly, but knowing Khan, it’ll just be funny and not anything serious in the long term.

There is so much we can potentially do with this. I wonder what the limits are for storing stuff and how well things keep there. We should experiment some time with mice and the like. Given the amount of experimentation here we ought to be able to find some rather easily.

We spent a lot of times in the woods hunting animals for meat, we probably don't have many moral compunctions about it. I wasn't planning on using any animal that was actually intelligent/sentient but lab mice, guinea pigs and so on. We'd start out by storing inanimate objects, them move on to meat and seeing what happens. We will not even consider moving on to anything beyond a mouse before we have explored it fully. People are out of the question until we have full understanding, have tested it out first and even then I'm iffy about it, most people probably wouldn't do well with interacting with the plane of shadow. But given that it could help us save people perhaps we could try, once we determined it was safe. Also if we get that down we could have Khan DYNAMIC ENTRY from a shadow we create.

You gave us a power with potential creative uses, this is /tg/ we'll see how far we can take it.

It would probably be best to travel in a group since you learned the hard way that going it alone is a bad idea. You find Erin in her shop, as always. She aced her finals and is ready to be promoted to Journeyman any day now. She praises you on your fighting prowess and hugs you, telling you not to put yourself in so much danger from now on.

    You can’t make any promises.

You ask her to meet you for lunch in a couple of days. After you have lunch tomorrow, of course. Just the two of you.

Khan is a bit more tricky to find, but after wandering around the outskirts of the city for a few hours, you hear the passionate screams of a man in the middle of his daily regimen… which is apparently punching a boulder. You aren’t even surprised to see that it’s got a massive crack in it. Interrupting Khan, he jubilantly greets you and makes small talk for a few minutes. It’s rather nice, but you’ve got business to handle back at the city. You ask him to meet you for lunch in a couple of days.

What’re you gonna do in the meantime?

An appraiser values your emerald at 2000 gold value. A Practitioner at the Alchemist’s Guild determines that your 10 strange potions are all untested prototypes, and she doesn’t really have any idea as to what they could do. Somehow, you know that some of them aren’t’ good.
