A hero, uh?

Your experience with children is nil, but this young girl and would-be successor of the Shieffer house is dreaming big, very big indeed for the only person you know that seem to share that dream is an angel currently residing in the sword at your hip, you still poses no answers as to how exactly she’s there and Radiance showed up out of literally nowhere.
It may simply be because angels are rather fickle beings, Hadraniel cannot manifest without the soul link after all.

You’ve been staring into space, mayhap the young girl statement prompted some kind of reminiscence, she invited herself to sit at your side after jumping on your bed and her almond eyes shine in that distinctive childish vigor you’ve seen in a very rare few people, those with a dream.

Strange, once more, that Hadraniel never gave you this impression, looking back at your encounters with the angel you almost feel like she’s tired.

‘’You’ll be leaving this place forever right?’’

Her high pitched voice break you out of your reverie and you stare down at the small girl, her smile seem both sad and happy, she’s completely different from the first impression of a haughty noblewoman she gave you after stepping in your room.

How can a young girl exhibit such maturity?

‘’Say, what does it take to be a hero?’’

For a moment your eyes fall down to the closed box, where inside resides a silver featureless mask of the Butcher automaton.

You feel a pang of guilt, guilt quickly washed away when Hadraniel send a wave of empathy masked in callousness, prompting a smile to appear on your lisps.

Seem like time made you better at decoding her.

The girl, Mia, muse as she swing her feet, looking forward while you silently think, it’s been a few minutes after your long speech but you’re convinced that this dream of hers is not recently acquired.

Now, I was thinking about what was said in the last thread, where we apparently met the Lilim before we awoke with no memory. I've come to two conclusions with this, one of these is pure speculation but the other seems to hold some truth.

I'll start with the pure speculation, which is that Siegfried is in fact dead. He is actually the beast simply controlling the shell.

It would also be reasonable to assume that the Lillim has forced the ability upon him as a means to further her own ends. Namely the formation of another demon realm. It's been stated she plans well in advance and as such her plan is to get us to eat as much corruption as possible, storing it within. Then, when the time and the place are right, the ability is activated and all the corruption we have cleaned from monsters in our adventures will be released in one blast, leading to a second demonic realm.

Now, the most likely place for this to occur? Zipangu. It has a population of both monsters and humans living in harmony. This would also serve as another staging ground for the demons to launch incursions into human/church held territories.

You look back to the girl silently sitting beside you, her question still being mulled over as you wonder for a moment how to properly answer; you’ve never had this kind of dream when you were her age so trying to base this ambition of hers over your own experience is rather sketchy at best, your childhood is mostly forgotten anyway, only your time at the college really stand out somewhat.

In the end asking the simple questions will prove wise, but even so hero is a word carrying enormous strength, none are more revered than the 13 for they were the only ones to bot only resist corruption, but eradicate enough of it to allow humanity to prosper.

After that, the few that were elevated as heroes found themselves corrupted one after another, with the religious realm of Lescatie connecting the south to Central falling into the demons hands for half a century before being liberated by the church after the betrayal of a certain woman, the word hero is indeed used sparingly, but at least you know that you have one at your side although Hadraniel is definitely a different caliber from all the previous failures.

The girl look down bashfully with a smile, her eyes look up to you and flee your gaze when they connect.

‘’I-I’ve read it in some books you know? Those thirteen heroes, fighting side by side with angels…’’

Ah, so that’s it? A childish dream?

‘’Also my mom told me that… this house would need a hero to recover, but I’ve… I’d really like… I’ve been dreaming about this too…’’

She continues, growing the brightest shade of red you’ve ever seen in someone as she cover her face in embarrassment.

Is her dream as ephemeral as any other childhood dreams? You know of only one hero, the young Mia standing beside you will end up like Hadraniel at best, but it’s not like you know much about your winged guardian…

Hadraniel always has this reservation around you, for her every single thing is duty and there’s no time to relax, even now she’s trying her best to support you through the link even if she seem imprisoned in her shrine, could she be feeling alone right now, or perhaps even a bit scared? She’s good at camouflaging herself, that’s for sure, and the image you saw in her mind, an endless plain, almost a desert in appearance and on the way to becoming a wasteland can only hint as to what it take to keep the title of heroes for such a long time.

Mia eyes are shining in childish vigor, her smile stays but she simply nods at your words.

You keep the angel words to yourself, going as far as never taking a step back seems too much for you, if you didn’t take one you’d still be caged in that mask.

You can’t say you know much or anything at all about such individuals, your words come from your own experience and you can only hope she isn’t led astray and commit the kind of mistakes you did, but if that gamble you have with your brother pays off she’ll most likely never need to murder monsters, this mask of yours will probably need to see service one last time against humans but after that? No Shieffer will be butchers, for better or worse.

Her hand audibly clap and cover her mouth and she grunt due to the sudden pain, jumping in place and rubbing her jaw, you take the opportunity to walk back to your bed and pick up the dusty box, hefting it easily under your arm.

Then she takes a large breath, puff out her chest, but both her hands on her hips and declares

As the new head of the Shieffer, she certainly tried to look the part when you departed your room, she looked all around you with her head held high and a strange smile on her face that she described as ‘’fearsome’’ when you asked why, but many of the maids fawned over the small girl when you passed them and for good reason, she’s much more adorable than what she’s trying to be.

When the two of you walked up the stairs, you found yourself momentarily stopped by the man in red clothes that accompanied your brother, short blond hair and rather fearsome blue gaze fell on you and the young Mia while he played with a large coin, rotating it between his gloved fingers before soundlessly stepping away with a smile and after making enough headway Mia assured you that she would have used her authority to move him, although she’s shadowing your movements and keeping very close to your back.

Stopping right before the door to the infirmary, you look down to the small tomboy whose breathing is slightly irregular along with noticeably increased sweating, she’s nervous beyond belief so you try to smoothen her worries by patting her head yet again, the gesture causing her to look up to you and you try your best reassuring smile.

You don’t bother to knock, you simply open the door large and the girl immediately camouflages herself behind your back.

The scene before you is… unusual.

You haven’t seen Mylen this angry in a long, long while, her leather wings flips constantly out of nervous twitch and her mouth is curled in a visible snarl, that’s some efforts given the massive lack of care she give at all time.

Tsu however, has folded her arms and is looking at your bodyguard with a devilishly playful smile, her vulpine ears perked up while her tails have puffed and circle her silhouette like the open petals of a flower.

‘’And I can’t, nor want, to answer you, come and protect him if you must but don’t expect kindness with your attitude.’’

Sitting on the bed, looking strangely wisely, calm and amused, is Radiance who turned to you and gave a wave before smiling broadly at the now hidden Mia.

Such a sight leave you grimacing along with putting your hand to your face in the most classical and worldwide known gesture of facepalm along with a very audible sight, prompting the two arguing women to look at you while Radiance contain her laughter.

You glance back to the intimidated girl whose hands are grabbing your traveling clothes, she’s trying to hide however she can but the fact that you’ve turned to look at hear completely revealed her hiding place and for a moment she look at you like a deer in headlight, unmoving, not making a sound and simply staring, before moving her gaze to the room, her face completely red.

Then you gently push her forward, Tsukiyomi and Mylen step away from one another, looking at the young girl who is fidgeting and looking down, you spot a very unusual smile on the Youko, a small smile betraying an overflow of motherly feelings while Mylen is simply looking at you, puzzled. Radiance, for her part has stood up, her two set of rosy wings flapping soundlessly while she approaching you from the side.

"Mia, these are the NICE peoples I told you about. They're my companions: Tsukiyomi, Radiance, and Mylen. Everyone, this is Mia: my uncle's daughter and the new head of my House."

You expected a heavy silence, that’s why you suspected Radiance was creeping closer to you to give the girl some comfort, but your words suddenly perk up Mia and she look straight to you, then right back up to the room

Her sudden exclamation provokes an awkward smile upon the long haired leathery-winged succubus who runs the back of her head and avoids eyes contact with the girl.

But the girl is almost a complete statue; her eyes glued to the wing of your bodyguard, then her gaze fly straight to Tsukiyomi and the set of tails.

‘’Y-You’re sickness was because of those wings!?’’

Mylen smile and look up before hardening her gaze at the set of leather flesh.

Then the girl literally yelps when Radiance put both of her hand on her shoulders

‘’I am the Embodiment of Faith, Radiance but you can call me Lysta, it’s a pleasure to know you, Mia’’

Seem like the girl can’t wrap her head around the title, you notice Tsu walking to one of the bed, sitting there in silence while Radiance guide Mia to her despite the silent protest, Mylen simply goes back near the window, her blood gaze straight at you for a rather awkwardly long moment but, soon enough, you hear some exclamation form the girl as she’s starting to feel up wings and tails.

Then you yawn, seem like everything is under control, you also spy quite a lot of documents neat Tsukiyomi, discarded for now due to the intrusion of the child.

You’ve probably fallen asleep right there in Radiance arms, a feeling of vertigo briefly assaulted you and your vision was forced shut, next thing you know you find yourself in the same church you first encountered Hadraniel in, damaged tiles, dust covered bench, some support missing part of ceramic and of course the large, large piece of ornate stone, looking almost like a throne but, sitting upon it isn’t the angel, nay, her spear is imbedded right in the middle of it.

No sign of the blue clad warrior, the double wooden door of the chapel are close but you spot some white fog leaking in and, behind the window positioned near the stone, sun and sky have disappeared, letting in only this perpetual creamy fog.

Standing in the middle of the old, empty and slightly damaged chapel with the angel nowhere in sight, only her spear lingers, so you resolve to do one thing what is, for now, the most obvious thing to do: scanning the soul link and hit a wall, one very different from the constant care Hadraniel gave you throughout the day, now you feel alone, hopelessly so.

Your voice echo inside the empty chapel but, you hear the very distinct sound of her armor moving and clicking while you were looking at some of the damaged pillars.

Sitting atop her throne, a perfect mimicry of your first encounter, the angel deployed wings stretches as far as they can while her strong oceanic gaze root you on the spot, armor clad and severe with the bright golden halo atop her head almost pierced by the helmet, the angel stay silent in her domain but the link leak of some emotions, poignant and stinging in the form of doubts.

When you convinced her to perform the link, she got out of the sword and calmly looked upon the monster population of Zipangu without the slightest hint of aggression or doubt, but now those have settled, no doubt her amnesia and what she recently uncovered had a role in this, much like your… failure yesterday night, but Hadraniel is the only self-proclaimed Hero you know of and it seem to be something much more important to her than an amnesiac desperately clinging to the last vestiges of her identity.

This question struck, you feel a leak in the link and her surprise is evident when her eyebrows shot up for the briefest of moment before she recover, with the briefest of voice she say, simply, ‘’I don’t know’’ and look down, her jaw tightening and her white teeth appearing in an angry grimace while she’s, most likely, gripping her spear with all her might.

It’s simple; she became a fast friend with Athena.

But even so she’s afraid, afraid of violating what it means to be a hero because you know that it is no mere title for her, it is part of her very being: her altruism is deadly, but can be misguided.

It’s a very simple truth, one that you never accepted in the past but the Butcher is no more, Hadraniel lived in an era you know nothing about but you’ve recovered enough of your memories to know that monsters –are- just as humans as you and Mia, each are born free of mental influences.

Some obey they’re body, but Zipangu showed without a single doubt that is not the case for every single one, humanity is nevertheless in a rather precarious situation with the rampage of male abductions, in a way, it truly does need saving but is it the same as the era this angel lived in where, according to old records, monsters were devouring and assimilating city wide populations?

Different crisis will inevitably call for different heroes.

‘’Does that distinction really matter in the end?’’

Losing a memory, in the end, doesn’t change the core of a person, you know that first hand: you trusted when you had no reason too, your various experience left a deep mark even when you forgot them, and you’re more than willing to give these ‘monsters’ a chance, no actually you don’t need to give them that.

They’ve already proven themselves, it’s hard, but they are becoming human slowly, but surely.

At least for Zipangu.

Hadraniel has now presented her back to you, both of her wings are outstretched, displaying once more how amazing she look clad in armor, a true Valkyrie, for both of her hand are gripping her spear and the link overflow with a quiet trickle of emotions, sadness, regrets, fears, doubts…

Slowly you recover from the angel confession, perhaps too slowly but the silence isn’t one you’re used to, this isn’t about diplomacy or charisma, Hadraniel is still standing atop her perch, recovering from her own outburst and looking down, not at you but simply down, her gauntlets in shaking fists of blue metals.

You let out a breath, recovering from her words and look up, the angel is still crying, letting out quiet sobs but her armor disallow her to shed or hide her face and her wings, it seems, are busy remaining idle.

You’ve already faced and killed humans before, perhaps that’s the same case for this angel but there’s no doubt her reservations about such a reality are much more intense than yours, nevertheless you won’t back down from whatever fate is going to throw at you, maybe it’s out of stubbornness but if a child can dream of heroism, so can you dream of living.

Good point good point, but in my head Chaotic Good means that while you're a good person you're rather prone to telling the general rules/norms of society to go fuck themselves. We want a decent-sized harem, we like, nay, love monstergirls, and we really don't like the demon lords plan/utopia of turning everyone in sex obsessed rape machines. Hmmm... Kind of like the suicide mission in Mass Effect 2. Had to pick who led/did what. Correct/optimal choice+loyalty=everyone lives. Don't got both? Goodbye to a few of the offscreen characters forever (because they're dead). Was kind of expecting something like that really. We definitely have all of the main girl's loyalty.

And the independent unit seems best fit for Siggy and company. Whether he sticks all the girls with him or not that role seems to play to his strengths. Hope we run into Fry-face during the war. We have to show her our "eternal thanks" for fucking up our childhood and nearly taking out one of our girls. Maybe nail her with "Arctic Dungeon" or just brutally explode her head with an acid filled spike so it'll dissolve the body/humiliate the corpse by rendering it naked. Yeah, I want her fucking dead...
