You are Reinhold, master swordsman and victor of the Royal Swordsmanship Tournament. The King was so impressed with your skill, he personally requested that you be transferred out of the army and into the Royal Guard! Not bad for an orphan who was raised in a brothel in a poor fishing village.

The only issue at this point is your assignment... you've been charged to be the personal guard of the King's only daughter Marianne. While she is the vision of loveliness that you'd expect from a Princess, her personality is... well... she seems to have some issues.

After managing to keep yourself (or Nicolette) from murdering Milien where he stands, you had Melanie tell Marianne that the bastard is at large.

She seems to have taken that news as well as you could hope.
>Congratulations, you are now a mangy DOG!
>Though dogs are loyal, they're not all that smart...
>The Princess now considers you to be her friend!
>But while dogs are man's best friend, they still don't count as people.

Seeing as how Marianne seems to be alright and Milien's nowhere to be seen, it's time to get back to what you were doing prior to that little incident. With a tired sigh, you pull your sleeve back over your bracelet and turn to the girls.

"...so we're NOT going to go and confront him unless he tries something, RIGHT?" Sylvie says, glaring at you and Nicolette.
"Yeah, whatever..." Nicolette mumbles. "It looks like Marianne's okay, so I guess I'll let it go for now."
"Don't worry, I know better than to cause an incident here," you say to her.

"Guess I'll go back to where my old man's sitting," Nioolette says. "I've noticed some guys checking me out, but nobody's managed to muster up the courage to actually hit on me while I'm around him... and I'm REALLY not in the mood for that shit right now."
"Umm... would you mind if I joined you?" Melanie asks.
"Yeah, why not."

"And what about you, Reinhold?" Sylvie asks. "Maybe you should go and see if your grandmother's here yet? Seeing her would probably cheer you up a little."
"I actually ran into her right after the guests were let in," you reply. "She said that she was going to find something to eat, so I was going to go and find Citrine in the meantime," you reply.
"Oh, so she can see your grandmother too? That's really thoughtful!" Sylvie says, trying to force herself to act cheerful for your sake.

"You three can come along if you want," you say.
"Umm, I'd love to!" Sylvie says, smiling at you. "But I don't know if Nicolette and Melanie would rather sit down instead..."
"Nah, it'd be a decent change of pace," Nicolette says. "What about you, Melanie?"
"I'm fine with whatever the rest of you are doing," Melanie replies. "As long as I'm not stuck in this crowd of people by myself," she says, laughing nervously.
"That's set, then..." Nicolette says, shrugging. "Lead the way, Reinhold."

As you give the hall a once-over, you notice that the crowd density's gone down quite a bit in the past few minutes. While there are still PLENTY of nobles around, they're more evenly dispersed between the various areas of the hall.

Why are people still voting and complaining when arch already cut off the votes?
>>
I must be the only guy who thinks that milien has actually reformed and honestly think we should be weary of dueling him. He held our old job so his swording skill should be on par but something tells me that he fights dirty, something Reinold might not expect.

It's been less than 2 months. He was actively trying to provoke us when we brought it up to.

Also, Archelon outright said he was an asshole.
>>
>>28954633

Honestly, I was thinking it's more about excitement than anything.

Reinhold has family! And Friends!

He spent years basically alone among soldiers, and when he was with Citrine they never exactly had a huge amount of free time to just hang, or the resources to really DO anything.

So now that he has basically everything he could ever want, he wants to do as much of it at once as possible.
>>
>>28954643
i agree with not dueling him but i don't think he reformed. our friends have told us he's good at being two faced, so him putting on an act is to be expected

Dueling is only a thing people get to do, and our predecessor is not a person.
>>
>>28954701
It seemed like more people just wanted it to be a family thing.
>>
>>28954643

His swordsman ship skill is on par at least. His magic skill may be better.

In a dueling situation it may be anyone's game. He may fight dirty, but we're a brothel raised guttersnipe, WE can probably fight dirtier if he wants to play that game.

Though I agree we shouldn't duel him. We should keep tabs and try to block anything he tries, should he try anything. If he pulls something underhanded, it won't be in a duel where he has nothing to lose, it'll be in real life where he has something to gain.
>>
Well, this has been a questionable start.

He held the same position and trained with the royal guard. He wasn't a slouch if nothing else. The kind of training you can get in the castle is nothing to balk at.

Though we should probably ask the princess how we rate against him if we have an opprotunity. Or more wisely, Sir Gregory, since he won't get wound up at his name being mentioned.
>>
>>28954752

Yeah, and he wasn't IN the country at the time, obviously.

He left. Then in under six months he'd managed to earn his way into nobility and land himself a wife that's cute and reasonably intelligent(or at least isn't stupid).

Think on that. He just showed up, did his thing, and managed to either fight or weasel his way into a position of power with damn near unprecedented speed.

I'm not saying he's better than Reinhold, but he's not one to underestimate.

Motioning for the girls to follow you, you press on through the crowd. Luckily, you don't run into any pushy assholes this time around and are able to get across the hall without incident.

Aaaaaand there they are!

Full of smiles, Citrine and Marius appear to be chatting it up with a fancily-dressed young man with forest-green hair. Standing next to him is a tall girl with a black and red dress, her long black hair adorned with a fancy horned ornament.

Go to wikipedia and type in Palace Guard.

Palace Guard is not even an official term and is basically just semantics, a palace guard is also a Royal Guard. You're the only one confused
>>
>>28955312

>>
>>28955364
I used the two terms pretty interchangeably in the first few threads, and it causes my OCD to flare up when I remember it.
>>
>>28955412
It's just semantics. If you're guarding the palace you're guarding the royalty within. Being a palace guard and being a royal guard are the same thing.
>>
>>28955412
The phrase "Palace Guard" has never been used, and "Castle Guard" has come up exactly twice, and only one of those times was it capitalized. Whereas it's been referred to as the "Royal Guard" in every opening post since thread 2.

Either way, it doesn't really matter too much while the quest is in progress. The whole thing is a pretty pointless semantic side-tracking until copy editing, if and when you decide to have a style guide put together.

It's probably a good idea to play it safe this time around... though you know that Citrine would be more than happy to see you, there's always a chance that the people they're talking to are jerks.

So instead of calling out or butting into their conversation, you wave to Citrine in Marius in hopes that they'll notice that you're here.

...and of course she notices you right away. Then again, awareness of one's surroundings was kind of a necessary skill to survive back where the two of you are from.

After signaling for the people she's with to wait, Citrine runs over to you with a wide smile on her face.

"Reinhold!" Citrine chirps as she takes your hands in hers. "I was wondering where you'd gotten to!"
"Yeah... it took a while for me to actually find the two of you," you reply.
"Ooh, and you brought your friends too!" she says, waving at the girls. "Nice seeing you again!"

"Ehehe... I'm glad to see that you're in as good a mood as you were the first time we met," Sylvie replies, smiling.
"Yeah, it's always nice to run into a non-jackass here," Nicolette says.
"Umm, good afternoon!" Melanie stammers, bowing.
"Me and Marius were just talking to some interesting folks... come on, I'll introduce you!"

Citrine then pulls you along with her to where her husband and the couple that they were talking to are waiting.

"I see that Citrine caught you," Marius laughs. "I suppose I should introduce you... this fellow is my brother-in-law, Reinhold," he says, gesturing to you.
"Umm, nice to meet you," you say with a bow.
"And these are his friends," Citrine says, patting Sylvie on the back. "This is Sylvie, and the pretty one with silver hair is Nicolette, and the cute one hiding behind her is... Melanie, was it?"
"Y- yes," Melanie says, bowing. "Pleased to meet you."

"And Reinhold, this gentleman is Randolf, the Crown Prince of Krassato," Marius says.
"Nice to meet you, Reinhold," Randolf says with a slight bow.
"And this is his wife, Mirakarias."
"Ah, so you're the one that Rana was talking about..." Mirakarias says, placing a hand to her chin. "It's a pleasure."

So, Arch - questions about our fighting style. If I understand right, Volker only showed us the most basic parts of the Eschenwald style before he passed, right? Is it safe to assume that our fighting style is a complete bastardization of the family style that's passed on, since we had to learn the rest of it ourselves?

I'm just wondering what the chances are that if Agnes actually sees our swordwork, that she decides to drag us off to reteach/refine us to bring us more in line with the family style? It just seems to me that as a former swordmaster, that this sort of thing would be kinda important to her, and that as good as we are, I can't help but think that we probably would still come off as "unfinished" to her.

TL;DR - what are the chances that Agnes finishes what Volkner started, with regards to our swordsmanship, if we ever get extended time off?

"...girlfriend?" Sylvie whispers, turning to Nicolette.
"Dammit, I kept telling her that it wasn't like that..." Nicolette whispers back.
"Ah, I get it," Mirakarias says, smiling at you. "...you're caught in a love triangle," she laughs. "Or perhaps this would be a love quadrangle? Oh, wait... including Rana, it would be a love pentagon," she says, laughing creepily.

"But Granache isn't a country that allows polygamy, so you're going to be forced to choose one of them eventualy, you know," Mirakarias says, a wide grin on her face. "Ah, the broken hearts that you'll leave in your wake..." she laughs.

"You don't?" you ask, turning to Marius. "Why not?"
"It does pay well and there's no shortage of people who want to commission them, but I've kind of lost interest," Marius replies, shrugging. "I dunno, they're just kind of boring compared to most other things I've painted."

"I'm not giving up just yet," Randolf says, crossing his arms. "If I can't tempt you with money, then how about I tempt you with a rare opportunity? Mira -is- a dragon, you know... and I doubt you've had the opportunity to paint one before."
"But you want a portrait of her in her human form, right?" Marius replies. "And dragons in human form look no different from, well... humans."

"But if you could paint her dragon form..." Randolf says, pointing in the air for emphasis.
"I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't just volunteer me for things like that, Randolf..." Mirakarias sighs.
"But won't you do it for -me-? I just want a portrait of you ever so much..." he says, brushing a hand against the side of her head.

"How about I just say that I'll think about it?" Marius says, an embarrassed smile on his face. "I don't want Mira to faint from all of this, er, stimulation."
"Very well," Randolf replies. "But I'm going to keep on bugging you for a definite answer until the party ends, you know."
"Of course you will," he laughs. "...so Reinhold, what brings you and your lovely friends over here?" he asks, trying to change the subject.

"Oh yeah!" Citrine says, clapping her hands together. "Reinhold, you're so sweet... thank you for telling me!"

"I didn't know that you had other family members attending here," Mirakarias says. "So your grandmother was invited to the Prince's party too?"
"Yes, her name is Agnes Eschenwald," Citrine replies.
"Wow, SHE'S your grandmother?" Randolf says, a look of surprise on his face. "Considering that she never normally shows up to events like this, she must really want to meet you, Marius... I suggest you be on your best behavior."

Being known for your family is always worse than being known for you. It doesn't matter how badass your family is, you're still in their shadow.

We weren't that known in the first place.

>[4/4]

"What, is she scary or something?" Marius asks.
"She is indeed," Randolf nods. "Even scarier than Mira is when I make her mad."
"...is that so?" Mirakarias replies, raising an eyebrow.
"I remember one time when I was little, I was attending a party in Marconetti similar to this one... Prince Giancarlo was stupid enough to say something rude to her so she throttled him right then and there," he laughs. "So then Giancarlo got mad and brought his father over. Then he insulted her again, thinking that she wouldn't dare to do anything to him while the King himself was watching... but then she hit him even harder than she had the first time and dared him to make the same mistake a third time."

"And then King Celestino asked her not to hit his son -quite- so hard... but then she glared at him and he walked in the opposite direction as if nothing had happened," Rudolf laughs.

>>
>>28958410
Does that mean that we are actually reinhold eschenwald now? Up until this point, we literraly did not have a surname, what with being a brothel orphan and all, so this would probably be good for us, not just socially but emotionally, since it serves as a very real (And legally recognisable) reminder of how far we have come since those cold nights bookkeeping prostitute costs.

Actually, we were lower and the only reason we didn't drop all the way down back to wrom was because of how we handled it.

Also, the main reason she acted like that was because she was just beginning to see us as a friend and then she had that happened to her and felt betrayed. She'd likely react less severely now that she would be secure in her friendship and know that it was definitely an accident instead of attributing it to a betrayal based on past trauma.

Giving the hall a once-over, you see that Marianne's talking with Luciana now, and her fanclub seems to have dispersed. Good, being around her best friend is sure to help her mood improve.

With your concerns about the Princess relieved for now, you try and see if you can spot Agnes... sadly, the combination of the crowded hall and the fact that your grandmother's rather short makes it such that you can't see any trace of her.

Damn it.

Using your deductive reasoning for a change, you figure that her general dislike for events like this means that she'd probably stay out of the more crowded areas of the hall... that cuts out a lot. So instead you make your way for an area that's less crowded, motioning for the others to follow you.

"Hey Marius," you say, turning to your brother-in-law, "what kind of things do you usually paint? You said that you didn't really care for portraits..."
"Heh, you really are my brother..." Marius says, smiling. "I honestly wouldn't mind doing a few portraits of Citrine, but she gets kind of annoyed having to sit still for -that- long," he laughs.
"The Princess had a portrait done a few years ago..." Melanie says. "...considering how much she complained, I can definitely understand your wife's sentiment," she nods.

"Yeah," Citrine says, sighing. "And now that I'm pregnant, there's no way I'm going to agree to that. Sitting still for the one or two hours it takes for him to do a sketch is fine, but oil painting is long and... no."
"And there you have it," Marius laughs.

"As for what I like to paint... whatever inspires me, basically. Interesting things, beautiful things... I've been doing a few landscapes lately, but I think I'm going to do something involving that lovely fountain that's in the city when we get home."
"Ooh, that sounds nice!" Citrine says, smiling at her husband.
"And there's always the chance of having a sudden burst of inspiration... the key is to always pay attention to the world around you."

"You have a point there," you say as you scan the area once again in hopes of finding Agnes. Now that you're in a less crowded part of the hall, it should be easier to see...

...not by the food...

...not on the dance floor...

And there she is, sitting at a table while drinking a glass of water... It looks like she's just finished eating! Just as you're about to call out to her, she notices you approaching and waves to you.

"Oh, there she is!" Citrine says excitedly as she grabs Marius by the wrist. "Come on, Marius!"
"A- alright, there's no need to run," Marius says as he tries to keep up with his wife's pace.
