Last time on Commander Quest: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/12388813/

As your men set up camp in the recently captured ruins, you once again find yourself looking at maps and considering strategy, you have two sets of ruins to take, and once you take one; the other will surely be notified, leaving you outnumbered and exhausted in a difficult to defend position. One of your recently captured Aurachnaspecus tilts its body upwards to let out a clicking, screeching ululating cry... its either hungry or angry, you still dont know which a day and a half after you captured the things. Once the beast quiets down, you hear you messenger eagle cry out as it lands on the perch you had made for it, message tube attatched to its talon.

Read the note. Also guys, I've been thinking on what we should do and here's my rough idea for now. Opinions will be needed.

It's risky as hell but we have an ace in the hole - we use the mercenaries as spies since as far as the enemy knows, they still work for them. I imagine the rebels are sending supplies to the units here by the tunnels or they're keeping in contact with them through this. We use the mercs to send a fake request for torches (potentially giving us more torches and denying them) for the Lacerta guarding the ruins we are in. That allows the mercs to figure out where the brazier is in the two ruins. When we're sure of which ruins it is in, we get the mercs to send a false message to the other set of ruins saying the emergency tunnels are under attack and they were sent to get help from both sets of ruins. We then strike the ruins where the brazier is at and the other ruins likely won't be able to send anything serious to help since they'll be sending troops to falsely defend the emergency tunnel. At that point, we'd capture the brazier and we can force them to come after us since when their torches die out, they can no longer support the Lacertans. In fact, the Lacertans might start to surrender with no way of keeping themselves warm.

Modifications and other additions are needed but what do you guys think of this general plan?

"Commander Trentz, these developments are indeed disturbing. Upon you sucessfull return to DragonsReach you will receive an extra month to replenish your forces before being deployed to the Eastern Front. If at all possible capture the leader of the rebellion, soldiers in his or her employ are now a second priority to ceasing this madness before it saps our strength from the war with Uurlanth. A team of investigators is being dispatched to the ruins of Avensgate to discern what manner of portable siege weapons could have such an effect on a cities fortifications." the letter bears the seal of the Second Praetorian.

The ruined fortress is built into a mountain, so you would imagine that the caves are all around you

The sorcery of our opponent is the biggest problem to be honest but I'm hoping that he won't use it if we attack the ruins he is in. It very well might make the place collapse on himself and his own forces/brazier.

I don't think the torches were everlasting but I could be wrong. Info on that Pax? Are they everlasting or do they need to be re-lit now and then? What gear were we able to salvage? Nothing specific and just stuff to refit the villagers to have more protection and stuff?

yes, they are magical, if the fire they are lit with is magical in nature (originating from a magician or something like the brazier/another torch it will burn indefinitely. If the fire is mundane in origin, coming from a campfire, forest fire, or something a Fire Elementalist conjured from a spark and the gasses in the air the torch will consume about 1/100th of the fuel that a fire the size of the torches head would normally need).

the unit of Lacertans was 150 strong, so you got 10.

We want to crush this rebellion utterly yes? We should use our current advantage to defeat them in detail. As far as we know all the enemy forces are split between the camp at the river bend and the ruins, yes? What say while the mercs go spying to figure out the brazier/enemy sorceror's location we hit the river camp? We should take this opportunity to defeat them in detail.

Might be worth doing. Part of me doesn't want to so we have absolute surprise on one of the ruins but at the same time, the thought of letting us be seen and making them prepare outer defenses at the ruins while we come in from behind is appealing. The only problem is if they get nervous when we disappear on the field and are going through the tunnels and think maybe we have discovered those tunnels.

    >>12401159
Best case scenario:River camp goes down, no messengers get out, we retain element of surprise

Bad case scenario:One messenger gets out, we hit whichever ruin wasn't alerted with a surprise frontal assault then use the tunnels to launch a surprise attack on the other ruin

Very bad case:Messengers warn both ruins, we hit one ruin with a surprise attack from the tunnels and it gets a messenger off, we are left with a single enemy camp forewarned about us but we can lay siege to it

Worst case:The attack on the river camp fails, enemy is warned and we lose most of our forces. We no longer have the troops necessary to defeat this rebellion and are forced to retreat in disgrace

okay , idea. we send the mercs , the least battered one , back to the ruins with the brazier

simultaneously , we attack the river camp in force and let some raiders get away to lure the main body of rebels out of the ruins.

once the're gon , the mercs steal the brazier , bring it back to our ruins , they fire the tunnels leading to our ruins ,then we implement the mountian defence

Fair enough. I'm only worried, however, that we'll take losses we might not appreciate taking the camp. It'll take time to go from the camp back to these ruins and in that time, they might send messengers to the camp and see it gone. I think if we're using the tunnels, we should use them first. The longer we take to hit the ruins, the more rested they'll be after the attack on Avensgate.

you throw a chunk of boarox meat from the kill one of your hunters got this morning into your Aurachnaspecus' cage, the beasts immediately start tearing at it with their claws, shoveling the torn shreds into their neckless truncated heads, their wide mouths making a mess as they set their myriad needlelike teeth to work on their food.

You summon your mercenary captains into you room. Aaryn arrives first, his steel gray surecoat wet with sweat, bastard sword in its shoulder-sheath. you can hear the mercenaries mail slinking into itself beneath the coat. Aurthurias arrives shortly afterwards in a plain black shirt and brown trousers, his face slightly flush from drinking. "How can we help you, commander? we already told you that the mercenary units aren't allowed into the deeper portions of the rebel camps; we are used as perimeter and supply train guards. Have you decided on a course of action yet, the supply train is due to leave on the morrow, and will arrive by the end of the week, 6 days from now. If you wish to keep the element of surprise..."

    >>12401271
We actually might not have to take the camp out. We know a large portion of their forces are mercenaries correct? If the leader of an army is gone, why would the mercenaries stick around to fight? As well, there are numerous criminals working for them and without a real leader, they won't be problematic in a field battle. If we can seize the brazier as well, we may be lucky and some of the Lacertan's might surrender although now that we know their torches are magical, that might not actually happen.

I do agree though it would be nice to take their forces out while they don't know we're here. As I said though, I'm just worried they might stumble across us finding the emergency tunnels by chance or realize the camp is gone while we're going back to the emergency tunnels. Very risky either way...

"Arthurius, Aaryn rest you men up... I have a mission for you that will require large amounts balls, levelheadedness and attention to detail on your parts. I'll brief you on it later in the week. Send Kryria and Finian in once you find them please. Uurist you are dismissed as well, thank you all for your time."

Within 15 minuites Kyria walks in, her arm no longer immobilized, still not using its full range of motion and obviously hurting her when she moves it out of a fairly shallow cone of shoulder motion, but its working nonetheless; her smile goes from one ear to the other an all the way around again, and it could light up the room. Shortly after her, a dour looking dwarf, his jet black armor is scarcely trimmed with crimson, offseting Kyrias casualy suggestive streetcloths. "Captains, have a seat and prepare to pick your memories. I have reason to believe our opponents are led by a recently exiled Dwarf, his body is likely to have been fully shaved and I was hoping one of you would know of him."

Finian perks up at the name "Khalless Drachnios. He actually put 5 of the 11 members of the Great COuncil on their deathbeds, 3 of them had yet to recover at the start of my exile." he replies emotionlessly "Managed to completely take over the Duchies underworld after only 1 month of open warfare amongst the syndicates. Had at least a third of the noble houses ready to take up steel for him by the time he got caught, and I heard after my exile that another quarter of the houses were being heavily courted and leaning towards his camp after more investigation. Dangerous dwarf... very charismatic. We're lucky the League of Investigators was lucky enough to stumble on his plot when they did. Only reason he was exiled was there was too much worry that his supporters would rise up in rebellion anyways if we did. Will that be all commander, I need to be at the forges soon." If they wish to help us, they can, but I was thinking more of a Perseus character. He may know they exist but we should not become subject to their will and whim just because it is the easy route.

Dude, you've got your goddesses wrong.
    Let me help:
Raynha, Lady of the Estate. This goddess joined her husband in taking up arms against the Pantheon of the Moon during the schism, defending the battered Nyeteri and Sunrise Hall from the ravaging forces of the Pantheon of Moon. She holds domain over earth, loyalty and stability. Sending forth the spirits of fallen warriors to aid those who fight to maintain a righteous cause, or defending the lives and livelihoods of the innocent and defenseless.

Lamynus, The Sucubus Queen. The hot-headed goddess of fire, lust and destruction. known to send forth succubi, incubi and imps to do her bidding. One of the most actively malicious members of the Pantheon of the Moon, her minions know great power and pleasure... her foes often suffer a painful lingering demise.

    tl,dr:
Raynha: Good goddess who supports loyalty, stability, and has indicated she approves of us

    Lamynus: Evil goddess. Specifically:
    >One of the most actively malicious members of the Pantheon of the Moon
We'd need to pretty much do exactly what our enemies are doing and start wiping out random innocent villages just to get Lamynus's attention.

    >a bitch who wont go easy on us if we fuck up
That describes Lamynus perfectly. Raynha on the other hand is a Good goddess.
    >Sending forth the spirits of fallen warriors to aid those who fight to maintain a righteous cause
So she'd actively help us as long as we fight for Good, which we seem to be doing so far.

All we know for sure is Garagush is powering an enemy sorcerer, we have reason to believe Karythria is aiding him, and winning a major battle would probably attract Raynha's attention.

I agree on the fact that commanders were generally in their positions for political and monetary gain. This plays towards my idea of using what we can get, but not swearing loyalty because that just binds us in ways we might not need down the line. Also, we are the youngest commander, we are probably a bit naive in the large scheme of things, but naivety helps us because it gives us drive to do great things for people. We haven't noticed anything exactly wrong with the way our nation is governed, but I bet the deeper we delve the thin veneer of order will be torn down.

Oh c'mon now laddie. We are being civil here. No snide/snarky comments are needed to be made about people. Just refer back to the first few threads. We are an up and coming commander with a history that says we have great things in store for us. Why would we have to rely on extra-dimensional beings for these great things. We are a commander, and every problem presented to us should have a viable solution we provide.

Also, has anyone considered dressing our men up in different colors and what not to make them blend in with the mercs to reinforce them. I kind of don't want to leave the mercs by themselves to make sure the other end is secure. Why not see if we can find a branching tunnel to get a legion to wait in and have a scout/runner group be watching to tell them to march once the caravan comes so we have a marching fully formed legion behind with the mercs as well to pincer the caravan.

If they wonder why no one else is there, say they're out raiding/on patrol or whatever and then our units spring out to hit em from all sides. You watch the caravan roll in through the eastern tunnel, on the right a batallion of humans in full platemail, all of them wielding spiked maces and heaters. On the left is another unit of human mercenaries, these equipped with surecoats over mail, combat axes and kite shields. Leading the moer heavily armored mercenaries is a woman, a striking elf to be exact. She is garbed in bright orange robes, accented with black. Over each eye she has tattooed the icon of Lamynus. In one hand she holds a steel torch embossed with rubies and topaz... clearly an arcane device; in the other she holds a sickle. This woman is clearly the leader of the column, and seems on edge the moment the caravan stops in the courtyard.

Hardly any Lacertans or Dwarves are able to gain full citizenship, most of them, save the extremely exceptional, are Plebeians (most of the rights, but not all of them, harsher taxes... legal second class citizens), and even more still are indentured servants, and their sub-human taxes come out of their work towards ending their status as indentured servants. "NOW!!!" you bellow, and your aren't disappointed by the results, as you charge through the doors with the Warlords you see Cornelius' Legionary Batalion punch out man sized holes where there were once windows in their wall, leaping out of the keep into formation, leaving the heavy mercenary unit with no choice but to fight or be run down. A devastating volley of arrowfire rips through the lighter mercenary unit as your mercenaries prepare for the charge. You can hear Kyria let loose a whoop of exhiliration, and see a nearly constant stream of bolts spewing forth from one of the windows her rangers are assigned to. You can hear Cornelius shouting his men aside as he move towards the sorceress, determined to kill the wench before she burns any of his men. If she has magic, try to disarm her of her mace of death thingy. I think right now that the deities aren't so invested in these people that they would actually give them direct power yet. Just artifacts that enable them to do what they want done with the promise of power. Deities just don't go handing out connections to themselves out of nowhere from a period of silence of thousands of years I believe. I could be wrong though, you never know.

The withering volley of arrows continues to lance into the lighter enemy mercenary unit, special care bing given to any attempted deserters. the wagons drivers are all dead, the wagons riddled with what seems to be a forest of crossbow bolts, the stream of bolts from Kyrias window continues to douse the wagons for good measure. "Dont ye'go doin anythin stupid laddy!!!" you can hear collin below as Finian approaches the lighter group of enemy mercenaries. The 454th is now thuroughly bogged down against the heavy mercenaries, Cornelius fighting the elf with stout resolve, catching every blast of fire she launches from her wand on his shield... but the great oaken and steel shield is charring more and more with each blast, already its smaller steel studs are falling off and the elf is catching all of his blows on her sickle or dodged. His unit is out of formation behind him, so as to avoid being burnt by his lithe foe.

As you see Finian crash into the light mercenaries, a wordless cry of wrath on his lips, Collin cursing and charging to aid him, you hear a horrible crack off to your right. You wheel your head in time to see Cornelius on the ground, his shield split in twain, crimson cloak smoldering under his armor. He rolls to his right, narrowly avoiding another blast of fire, then barely catching a sickle slash aimed at his exposed neck, but his sword is knocked wildly out of position... you break into a sprint to aid your commander. You will defend your men, no matter the cost.

"No you daft ninnies, keep firing until the battalions hit them! Those were the Commanders express orders!" The voice sounds youg but authoritative you think to yorself, but you lose the voice to the din of battle before you can continue your evaluation of whoever has taken over your peasant archers.

The elven elementalist finally lands a blow on Cornelius' arm, her sickle slicing through the platemail as if it were butter, leaving a deep gash in his shield arm. the she-elf begins launching a jet of flame from her scepter, further damaging the shield-arm and scorching his left cheek... but before she can further damage your captain, the mighty roar of an Uursan catches her attention. She dives out of the way, launching a pair of fireballs at the onrushing cavalry, bursting one Uursan into flames, and immolating a different rider. Much to your dismay, the thick armor and sturdy weapons do not fold to Jaynes charge as easily as raiders, a second Uursan is downed, its leg clearly broken, the rider does his best to defend his wounded companion; but after four enemy soldiers he to is brought low by the enemies maces.

As she rises you shot to her "Come and test the might of your whore goddess against a Commander of the Degnarian Legion and see how long your parlor tricks last."

Silently you remind yourself that this pain is nothing compared to that of losing a friend, before bringing your burnt arm around to smash a mailed fist into the elfs head. She is utterly shocked that you would use such a horribly burnt limb to strike. rolled 25 = 25

Do NOT kill her. She is useful. We may be doing things for a good cause, but Justinian also seems to me being the end justifies the means kind of guy. I mean we just wailed on an elf woman's face till she was unconscious. We can use torture if necessary. Her goddess will leave her now that she is useless to her.

Also, Pax could you link your new thread, kinda lazy :3

    >Praedator smotan

We aren't a praedator, but we just did get done with some smotan.

    >Crucify
Incredibly dangerous woman who will most likely try to kill us the first chance she gets.
    >Take her alive
    What?
