    The world is a broken up, but essentially pangean. The Goblins believe that it's flat. There are numerous small and large islands here and there, aswell as huge swampland jungles in the middle of the oceans.

    There may be other lands, but only one continent is known. The planet may be enormous, many times larger than our Earth. If there are other landmasses, it may take several years in a dwarf skyship or elven boat to get there. So far, no-one have circumnavigated the "planet" (that we know).

    Swamplands aren't in the oceans as we have written it... although it does sound interesting to hve some there as well. The marsh/swamplands we currently have are on the eastern side of the continent, where the air is so moist it can sometimes lead to drowning. This allows the aquatic goblins to come on land and trade and interact with the normally xenophobic halflings that inhabit these swamps.

    I could see the Orcs, Goblins and Gnomes using "Magic glass", but no-one else, really. Others either don't live near the deserts or sand (such as Halfings), or they live nomad lives or don't employ arcane magic.

    Humans use big mirrorfarm-powered furnaces to melt sand. To them, wood is an awesomely valuable commodity and burning it would be sacrilege. Wooden ornaments are a sign of wealth and the richest of houses may even have a few pieces of furniture made of wood.

    Of course, the most valued wood is the Ironwood that grows around mountains, becoming dense and hard and Sea-Sylvan, a kind of huge tree-like kelp that, when carefully dried for years, becomes astoundingly tough and durable while maintaining it's wave-born elasticity.

    The best bows are composite bows fashioned from these two types of wood. Maintaining them at top condition calls for ogre tallow.

    So, saw new thread after I posted so I'll repost here, since we're on humans.

    So, I didn't see anything about human religion, so I'll throw my hat into the ring.

    Humans believe they were created by the "Great Giver" also known as "Ookluke" (with various pronunciations and differences amongst the tribes). Ookluke was a god of prosperity and peace, he gave the humans everything they needed and more. Eventually humans became complacent with Ookluke's giving to notice the destabilization of their society.

    One day, Ookluke gave his last and perished, his death brought the end of the human civilization. Now humans wander the deserts remembering what they had and seeing now what they have not. There are sects of humans that believe if they prove themselves to be completely self sufficient Ookluke will one day rise again to look over his people.

    Ok, so a quick recap of races seems to be in order;

    Orcs - The "smartest" race, society focused on building the greatest tower. Worships the Moon.
    Dwarves - Live in the sky, and hate the ground. Worships the Sun.
    Gnomes - Live in waterfalls (or other rapid moving water) where they have a bubble-based society.
    Ogres - Live in great frozen north, huge, hairy creatures.
    Gnolls - Whalers / explorers of the north, hunt the ogres for their fat, which they sell to the gnomes.
    Lizardmen - mutated kobolds who live in the jungle.
    Goblins - Live underwater.
    Elves -Fishing, living on floating cities รก la Waterworld
    Humans - Nomads, used to be great, now a struggling race.

    The elves should have some fish-like characteristics, big eyes, almost transparent skin, due to their intimate connection with water. Their druids are almost more fish than elf, giving them a most uncanny appearance to those of other race who seen them. (Merfolk, bitches.)

    Different parts of the ocean, for the most part. However, gnolls often rely on elves as intermediaries for the ogre-blubber trade. The gnolls don't like to venture too far from their arctic seas, so they usually sell their shit to elven fleets who then sell it in turn to the land-dwellers.

    Gnolls are the one race that elves almost never raid.

    Haha! Yes! And elf urine processed by these kidneys is a traded commodity, similar to a fine liqour. Special foods give different flavors. They trade it with the gnolls, who trade some and keep the rest to keep them warm on long nights at sea in the north. A urinater is as honored a job as a brewer is in this world. Rather than fermenting it, it is redrunk and processed again to increase it's quality.

    On Gnolls and Elves, I think there should be a stiff and strong rivalry between them, similar to Orcs and Dwarves. They are in a perpetual war or cold war. They don't like eachother at all, but don't necessarily go to war over it at any given moment. Gnolls want to rape the ocean as much as possible and sell what they can get for profit. The elves revere the ocean like a holy goddess.

    Gnolls also use iron ships. They obviously aren't nomadic as the elves. I'd say that the gnolls have seaside cities here and there, like trade fortresses, ruled by merchant princes.

    I got to thinking about the ice(?)-based dwarven tech.

    Maybe this world is not your ordinary rocky world at all.

    Maybe it started out as a water-world, with seas tens of kilometers deep.

    Then the gods/some god decided to raise one part of the bottom up, to be settled by the sentient races.

    As one part of the crust was raised, correspondingly the other parts were lowered, so now the deeps of the sea are TRULY deep.

    The deepest abyssals are more than two HUNDRED kilometers deep, and within these, the water itself has been compression-solidified (yes, water does this at sufficient pressure). Sometimes the dorfs spot mountains of this supersolid ice and come down to grab some. After all, compared to normal ice, it's a lot more durable and does not melt until heated to a temperatures in the hundreds of degrees.

    Solid water is solid because of the pressure. Remove pressure, water returns to normal. No floating mountains of "water iron" floating around unless there is magic involved (for example, the pressure is big enough to crash the laws of the universe, so a water volume gets bugged and remains solid permanently).

    Anyway, I don't like it. The goblins are supposed to live on the bottom of the sea, and their cities connected by underwater cave networks. This would put them way, way, waaaay to deep to readily raid elven/gnoll fleets/ships.

    Some thoughts on the gnome's bubble-towns

    - So they live in (or behind) waterfalls, where the constant rapid water makes it easier to almost suspend the bubbles mid-air, the bubbles being able to house entire, well, houses. Should there be some magic involved, or are they just really, really good with making soap?

    - Various bubble-making techniques is in use, one makes very fine, foam-like bubbles, which is used as fabric and clothes. Other make big "classic" bubbles, which is used to live in.

    - Is everything made of bubbles, or do they build/import things like furniture, or soap-making equipment from let's say orcs?

    - Still, what with bubbles being transparent, their society has to be a very trusting, almost hive-mind- like, as you have almost no privacy to speak of.

    No! The elves exude salt through thier skin just as we do, however, since they drink saltwater they tend to be coverd in a white crispy salt-layer. This is all very natural to the elves but the scraped off salt, called "Elfsalt" is marketed across the continent as a health-product.

    Halflings don't believe in souls, but worship the physical manifestation and memory of their ancestors. Thus, they casually use necromancy and see nothing strange about it. Their swamphome towns reek of death and decay, but halflings are still a pretty jolly lot.

    It is implied, but never said, that they smoke a lot of strange swampgrass and eat mushrooms.

    Whatever contact there is, it's mainly to trade for their 275% proof moonshine. Gnomes use it as one ingredient for their most expensive bubbles.
    Also, it seems to slowly dissolve glass. Lethal if imbibed raw.

    I was thinking that the gnomes don't really live in big cities behind waterfalls, but that small towns or outposts, maybe just a house or two, are situated behind waterfalls. Their society is built around bubbles, and they utilize an intricate network of bubble-pipes that take you too and from their large metropolises.

    Where these cities are, is never revealed. To get there, you must travel - by bubble - through a waterfall, in under the water, and then through a myriad of tunnels at ever-increasing speed. Their actual cities, where no non-gnome is ever allowed, are completely hidden and no-one has even found a way there. They can utilize this form of travelling to travel to any other outpost near-instantly, aswell. How this works is never revealed.

    Yeah, maybe they could store their souls in a bubble, making it a sort of phylactery, giving them some form of immortality. Or just send messages, store memories and visions, which in turn could be recieved by another gnome.

    Twelve immortal beings of unbelievable antiquity wander the remote edges and nooks of the world, where few wander from the demands of nature alone. It is said they are remnants of the predecessor civilizations, living gods for all means immortal yet without purpose. Most do not believe in their existence, but some say they might hold the secrets of the past, the future, and the universe itself. Those who claim to have seen them and survived speak of the encounters rarely, but tell stories of men going insane or dying of some sort of mental shock when approaching too close to the beings. A few others speak of receiving prophetic visions and inhuman understanding from merely closing on to their gargantuan minds.

    Theories of their being, existence and purpose range from malicious to outright impossible, but a few central theories exist. The first is that the beings guard the supercontinent from outside threats, or then protect some esoteric sites of unimaginable importance from the curiosity of it's inhabitants. Wildest of theorists, radical druids in particular, paint the beings not as constructs, but naturally occurring phenomena acting as a defense mechanism of the planet against the forced alterations by it's inhabitants.

    Whatever the case, as of late, rumours of certain prominent artificiers having produced prototype mind shields against the beings' mental influences have been surfacing. The time for unfolding the secrets of the colossi might be at hand...

    So, kobolds are the humanoid descendant of dragons, who are rumored to still sleep in the deepest corners of the world. The kobolds are a mischiveous bunch, constantly playing tricks on each other as well as any outsider who dare enter their dungeon. They are basically a Kobolds Fortress, with your average fa/tg/uy controlling them.

    In the beginning, when the world was young, a group of courageous kobold ventured outside their safe mountains, to see what the overworld had to offer. But back then, the swamps were still roaming with wild magic, which did strange things to these kobolds, making them lose more and more of their "noble" dragon traits, and giving them more of a "common" lizard look. Naturally, these newly formed "lizardfolk" were shunned by the kobolds, and the lizardmen had no choice but to stay on the outside, and adapt to a life in the swamp/jungle.

    Today, the lizardfolk are ferocious hunters, masters with bow and arrow as well as sharp talons and teeth. Any who venture into the jungle in hopes of finding ancient koboldian ruins or other treasures must be on their guard, for a lizardman shoots first, and asks questions later.

    These things are NOT called tarrasque, but simply tarrs. Twenty feet tall, thirty wide and fifty long, they move on all fours and can carry three fourths of an average tribe, with the rest tagging along as scouts.

    The docile tarrs have sturdy spines along both sides of it's wide back, if removed they slowly grow back. This, along with glass, is the main resource of the humans.

    The tarrs mainly eat sand, or rather, the microbiota in it, during travels constantly gulping down and excreting tonnes each day.

    Because of this, the larger tribes leave behind them clearly defined 'wake', while the smaller tribes are careful to have their scouts wipe this wake down so as not to be easily traced.

    There ARE colossi in the world(no, I'm not that guy). Great hulking monstrosities easily five hundred feet tall, all of them fallen and broken where they once stood. These were once used by humans as mobile fortresses, which are now inanimate as the power of Ookluke abandoned them. All are looted bare of anything valuable, and the few that are on the desert are mostly covered by sand, some lying in coastal waters while others that had walked the mountains have smashed to pieces when they fell down.

    Sometimes, maybe once or twice a year, the eyes of a few of these colossi shine with bright blue light for one night, visible for tens of miles around, only to darken again come morning.

    In my mind they are something like a cross between the Dune sandworms(ecological role), the Tatooine lizards and the LoTR Oliphaunts.

    They don't move fast, a walking human easily keeping pace, their hides are armored, but not 'Rasque tough. An arrow doesn't penetrate the flanks deep enough to hurt it, but a ballista bolt does. Aim for the head or the joints to bring it down.

    The Tarr's teeth are almost diamond hard to keep from wearing down too fast. As the sand goes through, some of it gets ground down to dust and this is used in the glassmaking for the finest of crafts.

    A tarr lives for about 75 years, during which it produces three or four young ones the size of a very large oxen. A tarr is mature enough to carry people and their stuff when it hits twenty years old.

    A tarr approaching the end of his life usually has it's burden given to younger beasts, but kept in the caravan until it can no longer move.

    At this point the tribe camps down for the night. During the night, the tarr is offered herbs to deaden the pain and fresh vegetable matter, if available, is given to it. The whole tribe will stay awake through the night.

    As the sun gives it's first rays, before the great beast wakes, the Elder of the tribe will use a specially fashioned spear to strike through the skull, driving into the brain. After this, the tribe will spend a few days stripping the carcass, preparing the meat, hides, tendons and such, before continuing their journey.

    For a month after the eldest beast of a tribe has died, all the members wear blue cheche instead of the customary white, indicating the occasion. Any raiders will leave the tribe alone and vendettas are put to rest for this month.

    What a lovely way to put it. I personally was trying t describe more of their nature, similar to how ogres were described. I was origionally going to have only two parents come together, the arms they remove from themselves grow together and eventually form another troll. I added a third in to make the whole process more interesting and alien. Plus, it fits to have three arms for the three armed creature.     Actually, I've decided to dig the whole glass deal, when combined with the Tarr oxen/camel glass-pooping.

    It could explain just exactly why the Tarrs are considered so valuable to the humans, apart from it's obvious uses as beasts of burden.

    To balance it out, I'd say that a Tarr only poops once a week, and not in considerable quantities. We don't want every tribe running around fully decked-out in glass armor and glass-huts and glass-whatevers. Only rich people get stuff made from the glass, and it's mostly used for trading.

    Anyways, I think that halflings should at times hunt the trolls. They can use their necromatic knowledge to preserve the flesh and fat, the fat which can be traded to gnolls which is passed on to gnomes. The mix of natural regeneration and necromatic magic makes a very very useful fat, as it can be used to make a low quality bubble, yet one that is very resiliant and remends itself. Useful in a variety of circumstances, such as fuel for their bubble ships.

    Also, if possible, some names for things. Towns, religious beliefs, animals, cultural ideas, landmarks, points of interest. Some names would really help set these things apart. Different races or cultures could have two different names for the same thing in fact!

    Makes me think of the darkspawn from Dragon age. Twisted versions of other races. We could bring this up, as to how these races are twisted. My personal suggestion? The gnomes become more illithid like when twisted, since they are the mind power ones already in this world, what with their unconcious connection and group dreaming and such.
