New dev content, so new thread. In a nutshell: new teaser release linked below, new requests to those seeking to support the project, some updates.

Ladies and gentlemen, your attention for a moment.

A brief tl;dr before we get down to the nuts and bolts:

Cose to ten days ago, /tg/ saw the first of several imaginary game threads that mentioned CHAPTER MASTER, a game about leading a chapter of space marines in the Warhammer 40K universe and managing its affairs as the CM. Many people were amused, as the game contained many elements from a great variety of games that elegan/t g/entlemen seem to take to like ducks to water, among them the more fun aspects of things like KoDP, DF, and plenty of others. Many people were also disappointed when they found out this wasn't true.

Some of those people decided that was unacceptable.

These people (read: those of us who can code or otherwise contribute) are taking on the task of making a Chapter Master game a reality to whatever degree is possible. Despite limitations presented, progress is being made, though there are some hurdles that will need crossing.

There are four things (in no particular order) that are desperately needed from the /tg/ community:

    - Support in keeping interest going
    - Coders for codan
    - Artists for artan
    - Creatives for creatan

Those of you wishing to join in the discussion can get on IRC (we like to chat with people, it's awesome), but we would like to stress that discussion of individual features is best done in the thread or in some fashion that allows ideas to be archived for examination at a later date. This process seeks to be comprehensive, and as such is starting from very broad feature categories and working its way down to small ideas - if you want to tell us how one or two things about the game should work we'll do our best to listen if you do it on IRC - we can only split our attention to listen to so many people all talking at one time - but doing it here is the best way to get it into our collective memory.

Those of you looking to participate in discussions about how the whole game functions or a large number of features work together, or looking to make substantive contributions like pulling together assets or content (we're stockpiling art, music, writefaggotry, and plenty besides), programming (While the biggest programmer group works in C++, we don't so much care what languages you know right now, as we do about how well you know them - though even newbie programmers can help in some cases), or other useful functions (more people good at maintaining blogs, wikis, large lists of emails or other data, and general administrative and coordination-related functions would be pretty darn okay) are cordially invited to leave us contact information (preferably on IRC, but here in the thread is fine) and get mired in discussion.

IRC is on the Freenode server in the #chaptermaster channel. For those unfamiliar with IRC, there is an easy-to-use web client accessible at http://webchat.freenode.net/# which is entirely self-explanatory. For more familiar users, the server address is irc.freenode.net and the port is 6667.

What we need from you more specifically:

-Contact information for anons with skills useful to the project. If you know programming or you're a great artist or you can make music or coordinate a huge list of emails, we need you to stop saying 'hi, I'll do stuff' and running away. We don't mind if you have to quit on us for some reason, just let us know and we'll find someone to carry the project a little further forward.

-Random events. Don't worry too much about scripting and programming tags and trigger conditions and all that, just write something up. Shoot for broad canon references and original content if you can, we've got plenty that already reference memes (we'll take a few more if they're clever and subtle).

-Lists, see below for information on what kind. Unnumbered lists that can be transferred to a text file can be slotted right into the game.

-Feature ideas. The more potential ideas we have thrown into an archive we can digest at leisure, the more pieces we have to try and fit together into a coherent whole. Plus, you know, we can't have the best ideas by ourselves. Two heads are better than one and all that.

-Stories, art, and other awesome content - whether it's a music file you've had sitting around and feel like giving a copy of to us because it might fit or a funny picture you want to put in the thread for shits and giggles, we'll take it. Greentext story of your favorite chapter? Good for inspiration and motivation. 2d artwork for when we get our graphical shits together? We'll add it to a growing pile so we can hit the ground running when the time comes. Writefaggotry we can copy for an opening crawl or an important occurrence (chapter founding, game over screen, black crusade launched, whatever)? Give it here, 'cause we need all that shit like crazy.

Herein ends the tl;dr, folks. Now to the rest.

NEW PRE-ALPHA RELEASE: PLANETARY SELECTION PROOF OF CONCEPT

This was put together by a lone coder working in Visual Basic. It's a quick and dirty attempt to represent the nuts and bolts of a navigation function, and happens to also include our random chapter generator. It will run on Windows (sorry, MacOSbros, dunno about you, Linuxbros) and requires .NET 4.0.

Open the application, start a new game, generate your chapter, and select the option mentioning 'Astronomica' for a quick look. Use the exterminatus button to exit. It's bare bones, but it's also more than we could have done for day three.

The download is available here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=OZLTJYCD

    Astartes-pattern bolt pistol
    third company crusade standard
    chapter hero's artificer armor
broken artifact from the Great Crusade
    Modified M34 Dreadnought sarcophagus
    And so forth.

A list of decorative materials. Examples include precious gems and metals (lapis, emerald, electrum, saint's bones, etc).

A list of heraldic markings or patterns relating to space marine chapters, other 40K heraldry, or original or historical patterns (green quartered with red, Dark Angels green, Black Templars colors, Sabbat Worlds Crusade era heraldry, other such descriptors).

    A list of images. Examples:

    Salamander
    Imperial Fist
    Apothecary
    Techmarine
    Battleship
    Frigate
    Shadowsword Tank
    Rhino APC

AN UPDATE ON THE CURRENT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS:

The design team has identified broad feature categories and begun to frame general concepts relating to these features in a top-down fashion, breaking feature groups down to their basic structures, and understanding what they need to be capable of.

Current topic of discussion for the design team is territory management.

    HELPFUL POLL:

Please choose one of the following:

[_] One raw resource: this game's 1.0 release should not contain mechanics that involve working with different raw resources outside the chapter, though when the one generic resource comes into the chapter's possession it should require careful management and balanced spending in a number of complex areas - not unlike how tabletop 40K only deals with points, even though these points buy a number of different unit types to use in conflicts. Later releases could expand this management tree's complexity outside of the chapter but for now don't worry that agri-worlds grow food and industrial worlds make bullets, just throw it all into something like 'production' or 'requisition.' We can worry about this to a greater extent in later release versions.

    OR

[_] More than one raw resource: This game's 1.0 release would not be complete and functional without features that provide players the challenge of managing different resource production chains, and that has to start with different raw materials on some level. It's all well and good to use points or requisition to model the acquisition of war materiel in 40K or Dawn of War, but this game should be more concerned with providing something more like the choice structure seen in King of Dragon Pass with its multi-use raw resources. As such, 'requisition' and 'production' will not suffice, though a simple and elegant system relating to the production that comes from different worlds or groups of worlds will. In my conception of this game, a single, generic catch-all resource is not a satisfying starting point even when pouring it into a more complex system down the line yields multiple finished strategic items whose complexity increases as they move down the production chain.

Responses can simply be indicated as [X] One raw resource or [X] More than one raw resource.

    INFODUMP

For those who still feel like they want MORE, an infodump was provided in thread number five that I am frankly too distracted to put a new version out for more than once a week or so, so I’ve put it in the picture attached to this post and will link the thread it was first posted in here: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/16528293/

DISCLAIMER: Information provided there will slowly grow more and more out of date. Depending on it to be solid in a week or two is a very bad idea. For any contradictions between dev-provided information in this thread and that one, go with what the latest thread says.

And yeah, this is why the supposed tl;dr was a few hundred words long.

Not a code fag, so I can't say how much extra work it might be, but I think having the different resources is important, from a game play perspective.
Otherwise, the various planets will all seem very samey. Forge World produces requisition? So does a farming world. Doesn't matter if I have 10 Forgeworlds and 1 farm world, it won't effect my chapter in anyway.

The lack of a particular resource is often the in game catalyst for dynamic player action, which is what spawns the crazy awesome stories.

Thank you, we'll be glad to have it.

    >>16547878
Well, we haven't really set anything in stone, but some of our thought processes revolve around the idea that once your chapter accrues a resource, or the resources if there's more than one kind, there will be a production chain that manages multiple different products or goods that this resource turns into.

For example, one system suggests manpower being split into chapter serfs and scouts/initiates as stated in canon, with both being expendable and the scouts/initiates being transitional - not all of them will make it to full marine status, but those that do might be turned into different kinds of marines (specialists, officers, NPCs, et cetera).

Another model features one general resource (production) eventually turning into everything from distinct types of weapons (heavy, light, etc) to different vehicles or a pool of psychic power for the Librarians to draw on, which will all be used for similar things but affect outcomes in different ways.

Are you suggesting that this is too much for the structure to bear?

    Resources -
Requisition (A general resource for purchasing items/planets/other resources you're running low on)
Weaponry (The more of these points you spend, the better armed your chapter is. I guess it would go towards buying/upgrading certain units, like giving a marine terminator honours or what-have-you)
Fuel (Costs fuel to power your vehicles/battle barges and to move your troops around the place)
Land (Sort of a maximum number, defined by how large your territory is, for building manufactorums, recruiting grounds, etc.)
Workers - how many non-militant units you have to do tasks of your choosing; put them into certain places so they produce more of that resource.

    ---
    Random Events
    - The workers of [manufactorum] have begun to riot, due to poor conditions. How will you respond?
[Purge] - Lose the manufactorum, but their heresy will spread no further
[Listen to demands] - Stops the rioting, but the manufactorum produces less/costs more to run.

Count me as a vote for making it one or two resources at the moment. A smaller number is better right now. It is something that can always be changed later.

The main failing of /tg/'s ideas is that the momentum seems to diminish. Getting something full of random factors, barebones but playable out there should be a priority.

I think allowing custom/random chapters, at least a few random events, minor resource management, random enemies, and some territory control/development should be more than sufficient as a base and probably grab a whole lot more support. It is always easier for people to give ideas when they have an idea of how it is going to work.

TL;DR - A barebones playable alpha version can have massive benefits to the game's production.

Without implementation of geneseed wiping a chapter out would be a lot harder.

building certain things could increase the generation rate.

Apothecarion gene-seed maturation lad for instance.

Splicing lab could also do this but increase the rate of failure.

The more you fuck with it the more the rate of failure increases, and it increases quicker then the generation so when you finally get Corax Clone Labs you have 300% generation of gene-seed 90% of those go mutant.
    >> Anonymous 10/07/11(Fri)07:54 No.16548478
    >>16548447

    That sounds pretty awesome.

It would would turn gene seed management into a careful balance of keeping up numbers and also keeping mutation % down.
The risk of losing physical power vs losing political power (disfavor with powerful Codex chapters and the Inquisition).

It would be a good paradigm to be always facing a chapter.
    >> Anonymous 10/07/11(Fri)07:56 No.16548489
I also think youre going to have to introduce it one race/problem at a time.

Sort out an enemy, first. Orks. Then add the Inquisition. Then Chaos. Then each race from that point. Then go back and start making interactions between them.

There's a seriously massive amount of work to be done here.

It could be possible to implement 19 space marine organs, each modyfing SM characteristics.
Each seed could produce new organs with slightly altered statistics -> that way geeneseed could evolve (only strong SM live to produce additional geeneseed)

I would expect this feature to show up in Chaptermaster 3.0
    >> Anonymous 10/07/11(Fri)08:02 No.16548516
So what will the actual, in-game ramifications be for not having certain organs in your geneseed? I think it might be too fiddly to have them as anything but a 'fluff' thing, unless you go under a certain level and can't really call yourself a Space Marine anymore.

    Septimus
This is a singular star system with V planets and an asteroid field running around the edges of the system. The systems sun is a young bright yellow star.

Septimus I is a scorched rock with no atmosphere. The planets rotation and it's immidiate vincinity to the sun make its surface a molten ocean with little stable ground.
There have been roumors that an unknown xeno ship crash landed on Septimus I, but given the nature of this planet, chances of finding any remainds are minimal.

Septimus II shares many features with the first planet. It's a heat blasted brown ball. But unlike Septimus I, Septimus II has for unknown reasons maintained an atmosphere capable of warding off
most of the suns radiation. For this reason the mechanicum has set up mining operations on the surface of the planet.

Septimus III is a desert world on the edge of the life bearing zone in the Septimus system. It's atmosphere mainly carbon dioxide, causes the planet to suffer from greenhouse effect.
Magos Biologis Kython first scouting the system with his explorator fleet in M33 describes Septimus III as a lush jungle world with very high tectonic activity and an astounding number of volcanoes.
At present time, the planet is on the edge of total eco system collapse, with only minor non-sentient xeno species living in the polar regions. Few ancient ruins have been found on Septimus III
during the initial scan, but have been since picked clean of any potentially valuable archeotech.

Septimus IV is a lush forest world with 3 continents and one pan-planetary ocean covering the rest of the planets surface. The continents are oval in shape and placed in unnaturally simmetrical positions
in comparison with each other. Because of this the planet was initially named "Triclops" by members of the scouting explorator fleet. Septimus IV has a solid population estimated at about 67 000 people.
The vast forests of Septimus IV are filled with many vicious predators like shadowcats and huge venomous tarantulas. Trees on Septimus IV grow very fast and their wood is rock hard, which makes it really hard
for the local population to carve solid terrain for their own. For this reason the planet has been classified as a death world. The people of Septimus IV live in small clan like communities which maintain
their faith in the Emperor. Because of bureaucratic complications, septimus has not yet been written up in Administratum charts as a rightfull imperial world. It's people are simple but strong and with
right motivation would make good candidates for chapter initiates.

Septimus V is a tundra planet, located on the edge of the life belt of the septimus system. The flora and fauna are rich for a planet in this position. It has been suggested by Magos Biologos Kython that
the planet might have been closer to the sun at a diffrent time, but the reasons for it's position shift are pure speculation. The world offers little in terms of economic interest, and thus has not been
set for settling by the Administratum, nor any other power in the Imperium. The planet has 4 major continents, 5 oceans dividing them and numerous small islands and seas. The world periodically goes
through an ice age, lasting about 2 deacdes. At that time, the flora and fauna switch to a "winter sleep" to survive.

Just thought I'd drop in with a couple ideas:

Make sure that the relations/diplomacy system is as varied and intricate as you can make it without it being asinine. Different chapters, Imperial organizations, leaders within those organizations, planetary populations, etc should have different temperaments. For example: say that you and another chapter destroy a group of xenos. The other chapter pulled most of the weight, so basic fairness would dictate that they receive a relic that was recovered. However, you have actual, physical control over the relic and refuse to turn it over. Obviously, anyone would be pissed about that, but not all chapters would react the same way. Black Templars might refuse to be involved with you in anything ever again, but the Salamanders might forgive you over time.

I don't expect battles to be detailed and hands-on like in DoW, but they should still be much more complicated than simple math equations where you take the rank and variety of your soldiers, plus the quality of their gear, their morale, etc and compare to your enemies' and whoever has the biggest number wins. You should be able to maneuver your troops throughout the battle - order certain troops to charge, fall back and perform some other tasks, retreat and then re-engage the foe at one of their flanks, pretty much any general maneuver you can think of. And instead of battles being just some blip on the map, they should be more like a temporary part of the terrain, and carry on over time like any normal event would instead of freezing time and space like battles do in other games, like say, Total War. For example: say your ships have engaged an Ork fleet, you're duking it out. Then some dumbass merchant tries to fly their ship through the middle of the battle. There should be a good chance that they'll be blown to pieces. And as the battle progresses, other forces should be able to join in.

HAHAHAHA no that's way too much work, you're talking crazy.

I saw a decent idea previously where you just gave a general order of 'Attack, defend, recon, fall back' and that'd give a general tactial bonus toward stuff, depending on the weapons and abilities of the troops you give them to. I thought it was good.

How about, you give general orders, and all marines affected by the order will attempt to comply, as soon as they can. Sort of like Dorf Fort, but you can actually tell specific people to do things.

Each attempt to obey orders is a "turn" of combat. Depending on the size of the job, and relative value of the unit(s) doing it, it may take more than one "turn" to complete.
    >*Value of unit + relevant equipment) divided by (value of target + relevant equipment) = contribution of that unit to completing order? Like, a 16pt marine with a 10pt power fist and nothing else with orders to take out an Ork Warboss (~125 pts, innit?) would take about 5 "turns" to do that, on his own. (Assuming the Warboss doesn't slap his shit silly before then.)

The Warboss has a rating of about 400% contribution, so you'd get more Power-fisted Marines on board to either increase the attacking unit's value, or simply split the Warboss' fire.

This might be more possible with KoDP event and tactics style scripting than it would discretely, and even in 1.0 at that.

That said, it's a lot to think on and a Chapter Master is different than a company captain. I expect it'll be more detached than that, and if you want it to be minutely involved at every level I'd honestly tell you that there's already a series of games for that in terms of tactics.

However, KoDP levels of engagement with battles will be the target.

Would it be feasible to make it so you can play in a sort of campaign mode, in that you start out in a regular game, then when you're done with that chapter you can start a new one in that same universe? And your old chapter(s), and accomplishments and failures still live on?

Of course there would still be a regular mode where you can start off completely fresh when you're done with the old chapter.

    [X] More than one.

Ideally, not more than three, however. More than three just gets confusing and irritating. I'm thinking fuel/munitions, and influence. Influence would be a catchall resource, every world you get would generate it, no cap, with forge and hive worlds generating more. A tribute world, the ones devoted to praising the emprah, would generate nothing but influence. Oh, and the inquisition gets pissed if you lose or exterminatus them.

Munitions/fuel would have a somewhat low cap and generation, and would obviously be expended in combat, so your chapter might be exhausted after a major campaign.

I'm thinking recruits should be more an an individual thing, so you might get attached to them and have crazy awesome ones, rather than just a number or generic resource.

Its a little hard to explain as I've npt touched the game since late 2003, but...

You play as the supreme commander of either the Rebellion or the Empire. You have certain characters divided up between semi-controllable Major Characters (like Mon Mothma, Luke Jaywalker, Darth Vader, and the Emperor) that you use for diplomatic stuffs, and training force-sensitives (in the instance of Vader and Knight-Luke).

Space battles that you have direct control over, governing mining and other resource gathering, this game pretty much had all of what the Chapter Master stories had.

Being an old-newfag, I can't recall if posting game download links is frowned upon. Inform me otherwise and I'll procure linkz!

Again, we don't have immediate plans for a full GUI in the first version of the game.
By thread 4 or so, however, I already had enough sprites that I could mockup an Ultramarines chapter disposition menu. See pic. This is far outdated, there's not currently any plan to be able to select individual marines (except maaaybe to see their history and feel proud).

Now, consider that the final version shouldn't use just Ultramarines icons, or any specific chapter, but generic templates that are automatically colored for the player's chapter with heraldry and honors superimposed, and that the coloring should support halving, quartering, company trim or not company trim, squad markings, etc.
Can't do that until the GUI has the programmers' focus, and they have far more important things to do right now.

(I should up the contrast on these sprites anyways, they were quick work)

In the meantime, my Imperial Tarot painting is almost done already, but I won't be able to finish and post it until Wednesday at the soonest.

Generating nouns/names/whatever comes under the umbrella of - think of something relevant, make a list, e-mail it to the devs.

Tbh a list of anything will do atm but try to keep it within the scope of the game, as described in the opening posts of this thread. I'd advise picking out something, like marines names or something, and have a bash at that for a while before sending off what you're happy with.

BY THE INEFFABLE WILL OF THE EMPEROR OF MANKIND,
AND BY THE WORD OF THE HIGH LORDS OF TERRA
In this year of [start date minus 30+ 2D20 years] the Emperor's Tarot has prophesied a need for the foundation of a new Chapter of the Legiones Astartes. In accordance with this, the Emperor's Sign, the High Lords of Terra, in their Sacred Council and by their Unquestionable Authority, have decreed that such a Chapter be created. By their will, and through theirs His, the Priesthood of Mars shall commence the growth of the gene-zygotes. Having inquired prior to the Council, the Master of Mars, the Lord Fabricator-General, has been informed that the batch ought to be prepared from the ready stock of [Primarch (or mysterious gap in the transcript…)], as tithed from his descendants the [parent chapter*].
    >> Pauldron Guy 10/07/11(Fri)13:39 No.16550676
    >>16550667

They shall be known as the [Name], Warriors in His Service, the Angels of His Will and Destroyers of his Foes.
Their colors should be [armor color] with trim of [trim color], and upon their fearsome suits the mark of the [chapter symbol] will be engraved. As was laid down in scripture in ages hence, their armaments shall be the finest that the Imperium can furnish, and already the Forges of Mars turn to that task. Lord Commander Militant shall select veterans of note to instruct the new recruits, and draw serfs from the proud families that labor in the service of other Chapters. The Paternoval Envoy of the Navigators has pledged the service of his kind, and the Adeptus Astra Telepathica have sworn their assistance as well. The Speaker for the Chartist Captains will draw routes of supply and the Lord General Militant will establish liaison.

Now we set the deeds in motion, and the happenings of the Galaxy are brought in accord with the Emperor's demand.

*Odds: 70% first founding of that Primarch, 20% canonical second founding, 10% randomly generated chapter. In any case, allegiance to this chapter can be brought up in random events! If Primarch unknown, will always be randomly generated

Inquisition Visit = Security + Loyalty
0 – 24 – The Inquisition without warning begin firing on your Chapter fortress. The Inquisitor approaches you, force sword in hand, and branding you heretic, cuts you down in the name of the emperor. GAME OVER.
25 – 49 - The Inquisitor has uncovered some of the darkest and dirtiest secrets of your chapter, including blood rituals and localized spirit worship. You have been declared Excommunicate Traitoris.
50 - 74 – The Inquisitor has looked over your knowledge banks and realized that there are a few files that relate to questionable friendly relations with xenos. You have been asked to go on a fifty year penitent crusade to atone for your actions.
75 – 125 – The Inquisitor has looked at your geneseed, knowledge banks, and other assorted files, and seen a few minor discrepancies, which is enough to raise an eyebrow, but nothing major. He will return in a few years to retest again.
126 – 150 – Your Geneseed is pure, according to the Inquisitor. You will not need testing for another couple hundred years.
151 – 174 The Inquisitor admires your purity, and reports to the inquisition that your chapter does not need to be tested while such a chapter master as you leads the Chapter
175 – 200 – The Inquisitor marvels at the purity of your chapter, and takes a sample back with him to Terra so as to create successor chapters.

How about this? Each turn you select an 'attitude'- Offensive, Defensive, Berserker, for example- and it's matched up against the opponents. One 'turn' is one engagement, and random choice features.

So, a heavily-stacked unit of Marines and so on are likely to chew through anything...But sometimes the dice go against you. Factors like special characters, chapter traits, terrain and so on are simply bonuses or negatives.

If you want to be really elaborate, you could have a simple tactical map (abstract) of several 'points of control'. A small planet has 3-5. Once you hold all the control points, you win that planet.

A massive one might have 10, at most.

Ooooh, not bad. Maybe some Chapters can discover special Attitudes?

The rounds should go: Artillery Fire/Firearms/Melee Combat. So if you're really focused on one, it'd chew through your enemy fast before they even close in.

Maybe you can spend Command Points (From the stack's Leader) to have special effects, too. Like the Chaplain has Litanies of Hate, which greatly boosts Aggressive Tactics and the Melee damage round. Or No Retreat, No Surrender, which removes Defensive Tactics, but lets you last longer in combat and so on.

    CHAPTER MASTER COMBAT SYSTEM:

Each Combat Turn, you select an 'Attitude' for the Marines on that Control Point to use. All Chapters have 'Offensive, Defensive, Berserker' modes, which give a flat bonus to each stat. You also select a power to be activated, which burns Command Points- Command Points depend on the rank of the Officers leading the squads. These tip the edge in battle.

Enemy races have specific Commands that can be issued. Eldar, in particular, have a lot, which is a pain. Orks mostly usually rely on Berserker tactics and the WAAAGGGHH! command.

When the fight starts, three 'Phases' are triggered.

Artillery Phase: Vehicles and supporting fire, as well as heavy weapons.

Firearms Phase: This is Bolter, Slugga and Shuriken Catapult range.

    Melee Range: Pretty much that.

Marines are versatile in all three areas, generally. Orks are heavy Melee, Eldar are heavy Artillery and Melee, with major Command Skills (Eldritch Storm counts as 'artillery') and Imperial Guard are Artillery/Firearms specialized, with a pitiful score in Melee.

We've just finished setting the groundwork for our diplomacy system. For now, I'll say that the project is moving along very nicely. A proper dev entry should be arriving later today or tomorrow.

In the mean time, what we need from you, /tg/ is to start a list of individuals to represent the various organizations that you speak to. This is so we can randomly generate a representative for a particular organization.

All we need is a rank, name, and the organization they belong to.

Organization can be any major faction, race, or Imperial Adeptus.

Lord-General Markham, Sector Commander of Imperial Guard forces. The system we're in is one where active fighting is still going on; Technically, his forces are part of the (Insert System Name) Crusade to claim the area.

He represents the Imperial Guard, and is FRIENDLY to the Marine chapter, at least at the beginning.

Inquisitor Lord Abraham van Einzbern- He represents the Inquisitorial forces, and is NEUTRAL to the Chapter. He regularly sends envoys to inspect gene-seed. His 'forces' as a faction are the Grey Knights and Inquisitorial Storm Troopers, like upgraded Guardsmen.

An idea: Here's a tentative 'story' I had...

The newly founded Chapter has about a century to establish itself, before the 'endgame' event, a Black Crusade, sweeps out of the Eye of Terror/Warp Rift. In fact, maybe the Chapter was established to guard it, like the Screaming Vortex.

Everything is a buildup to ward off the Chaos incursion- If you succeed, that's the end of the first century/demo mode. It sounds like a good 'endpoint' for the first release.

They allow you special options that other factions cannot grant, like using your geneseed in a new founding or going on really big crusades. Thrones are not the universal imperial currency.
Throne Gelt is a local term used for currency in the Calixis Sector.
Even in the Calixis Sector, it is merely a fixed unit of exchange, rather than an actual currency. In the DH rulebook, it describes how some worlds use bits of scrap metal, others use seashells, and other have fully electronic currency.
There is no unified Imperial currency, but outside of DH, the most commonly mentioned is Credits, as used on Necromunda and elsewhere.

    I like these.

Then there are Global Events like:

1.) Upswing of faith: Lowers the risk of heresy, peace across the system is boosted.

2.) Roots of Heresy: A crazy cult is making it's move, and the cultists are crawling out of the woodwork.

3.) Ork WAAGGHHH declared. Ork invasion! Batten down the hatches.

I do think that the main event, after a few centuries or so, would be a Black Crusade. The Screaming Vortex or whatever spills open, and you- As well as other SM Chapters- must ward it off.

If you win, after a gruelling fight, or even better, kill the Chaos Lord, you've saved the system. Your Chapter has been tested in the fire of battle, and not found wanting, which is a great victory for the Imperium.

    After that, Free Play!

    For *good* events:

    1.) Legendary artifact discovered.

2.) Hero arises on your home world. If you leave him, the planet gets a boost; If you recruit him, you get a particularly exceptional marine.

3.) The Feast of Blades; Chances to compete and win honor.

4.) A small squad of Grey Knights/Deathwatch approach you, and agree to work with your Chapter. They're not saying why. Same for other Marines- If you keep them alive, you get a relation boost with their Chapter.
    >> Iron 10/08/11(Sat)22:46 No.16564995
    >>16564951

    > 3.) The Feast of Blades; Chances to compete and win honor.

As far as scripted/random events go, this one is a must in my book. It'd only be for the Imperial Fists and their successors, though.

    >>16564995

I'd assume you get to send one of your best Marines; Even if he doesn't win, he still gets stat boosts and honors from even participating.

I'm wondering if it's even possible to place all of the Chapter Traits in. How would you determine 'This Chapter is a successor'? That's twenty different successor-specific variables.
    >> Iron 10/08/11(Sat)22:52 No.16565037
    >>16565015

I don't think it'd be too hard for the coders to have some sort of qualifier for chapters to experience chapter specific events. Whether or not it'd be in V1.0 or not, however, is another matter entirely.

    Similar things for other chapters:
    Ultramarines: Marneus Calgar visit
Blood Angels: Astorath the Grim has come to bring the Emperor's Mercy to your Death Company!
Dark Angels: A Fallen has been sighted! This is your chance to bring the Unforgiven closer to their redemption!
Salamanders: Vulkan He'stan requests your assistance searching for one of the Artifacts of Vulkan!

    >twenty
I think you mean nine.Chaos will come later. Cursed Founding/Dark Founding/Index Astartes might have its own thing too.
    But nine for now.

You'll pick your founder when you start, or have it generated. Your founder will not always be known. Sometimes you may know your predecessor chapter but not your primarch.

    How would this affect you?
Obviously some chapters have very distinct organizational quirks. Space wolves are an obvious one. Salamanders also have unusual composition. White Scars would get a bike discount or something. Blood Angels have all sorts of special snowflake stuff.

Codex chapters would be differentiated with events like Feast of Blades, Ultramarines calling a favor, Fallen appearing, etc.
    >> Pauldron Guy 10/08/11(Sat)23:04 No.16565136
    >>16565060
Another thing we've talked about in the dev IRC is that when you aren't present for a battle, your captains will pick reactions to the events that crop up based on a Deathwatch-style demeanor. Battles largely involve events popping up with a few choices. Each demeanor would be assigned a response to each event. You would have no control except what forces and what captains you send in response to your briefing, and get a report back from them.

Most of these will probably be personal-type demeanors, like Steadfast or Aggressive, but I'm in favor of having something like 1 in 5 chance of it picking a Chapter Demeanor instead, which would be rolled on a smaller list of options (I'm thinking just one or two) that represent that chapter or chapter line's defining features.
    Fists, Stubborn and Masochistic.
    For Salamanders, Methodical and Pyromaniac.
    Dark Angels, Calculating and Obsessive.
    Ultramarines, Codex and Honorable.
    Wolves, Heroic and Barbaric
    Blood Angels, Angelic and Vampiric
    Raven Guard, Daring and Evasive
    Iron Hands, Uncaring and Efficient
White Scars, Vicious and Speed Freak
    >> Pauldron Guy 10/08/11(Sat)23:11 No.16565211
    >>16565136
So, once you'd played a few games and were familiar with the common events, you would know not to send Lexandro D'Arquebus, the Masochistic Imperial Fists captain, into battle against an enemy where your leader is likely to battle theirs personally, like Chaos, because he might get himself killed, but if you got a warning that a world was going to be attacked soon and could deploy your forces before the enemy arrived, you might send Rhetoricus, your Stubborn Master of the Recruits, to lead the defense.
You would send Sevan Tu'Sar, the Pyromaniac Salamanders Captain, against Orks on a Jungle World, but you wouldn't sent Hephaestus Er'Kan, your Methodical Captain, to fight Eldar- he wouldn't be able to adapt to their tactics.
    >> Pauldron Guy 10/08/11(Sat)23:18 No.16565279
    >>16565211
And as a Blood Angel, every time you responded to an enemy attack by deploying a Vampiric Captain, you might get a lower Influence bonus than usual due to a string of strange deaths coinciding with your presence, but if you sent your Angelic captain, you'd get a higher bonus.

As Space Wolves, your Heroic captain should be sent up against enemies he can engage in single combat, or where you want to please the populace and gain more Influence. Your barbaric captain should be sent against enemies he can ruthlessly slaughter without having a negative effect on the locals- like putting down rebellions and setting an example.

Boy, it's fun coming up with examples for these.

As always, take it with salt, these may not end up in the game, we haven't nailed so much down yet.

Mad Chainsaw Johnson, your Vicious White Scars Captain, will not be able to keep up with Eldar. Your Speed Freak Captain will already have enough bikes.

Your Uncaring Iron Hands captain cannot be trusted to preserve civilians, so sending him to rescue a besieged Hive world might cause huge civilian deaths, because I'd imagine a lot of Hive World battle events would be along the lines of 'civilian meatshields y/n?'. This would be bad for your reputation, needless to say.

    And so on

Actually, that one is based on reading comprehension. If you divide the sentence
    >The High Lords of Terra have found your gene-seed wanting, and forever struck your name from the history of Man"
    into the clauses
    >The High Lords of Terra have
then you have the word "have" applying to

    and to

Chaos controlled; A world under the thrall of the foul Chaos powers. Worlds such as this must be dealt with in any way but beware the many varied and strange dangers.

Hive world; A world where mighty cities are vast conurbations of steel and stone, built in such a way over such a long time that they are known widely as "hives". Many such places teem with humanity.

Feral world; The presence of humanity here is, to be honest, a matter of survival. The technology is basic and the people uneducated. It is common to find tribes on worlds such as these.

COULD THERE BE some sort of system a planet's inhabitants have genetic/cultural traits?
For instance there could be a high gravity world that makes half ogryns that have a Strong trait or +5 strength or something.
Or there could be a feral world where the natives have +Savagery or bloodlust or something.
The idea would be that when you recruit these people it shapes the character of your chapter.
And conversely there could be a mechanic where you increase the genetic screening of your geneseed or the indoctrination process and it reduces the influence the recruits would have on your chapter.
    I've said this badly.

It may just be me, but I think that if you are doing descriptions of planets and such, while it may seem like a good idea to use plain language such as those for the planets, it isn't.

Just as an example you said

    >Chaos controlled; A world under the thrall of the foul Chaos powers. Worlds such as this must be dealt with in any way but beware the many varied and strange dangers.

I would alter it to something more like this.

Warning! Planet/System XXX was wrested from imperial control in M39.002 and has ever since been a threat to imperial worlds and shipping in the sector. Presence of Heretics confirmed.

Remember, these are space marines and what they know. We can't just write this out in a way that players understand it, we have to put it into a fluffy format so that the immersion feels more full.
