    >Short side-story if you missed it: http://pastebin.com/WbPrFaBx

You're currently thundering towards a loose gaggle of bandits in the pitch-black, leading a loose Vee of Witches into the intercept. You will merge with the enemy in mere seconds, and the Witches are counting on your radar. Below, in the dark waters, a Witch floats, shot-down, helpless - and Martian water-craft are closing on her fast.

Ian, cover that witch, sean cover our rear arc, Minna, there's nothing in the world that's going to keep up with me on this, so I'd appreciate you taking down the martians that are about to follow me.

Sean, on my mark hit the radar full power, I want the martians boards to be screaming, retransmit the data to whoever is listening.

*hit wep in a dive for the witch*

    Now sean.

    >What becomes of Tiger Aces like Wittman and such in this timeline? Are they tankwitches or do they just not exist because Martians eat tanks for breakfast?

Very much still around. Tanks are still important front-line weapons - truth be told, they're better then those stupid fucking "tripod" walkers the Martians began the invasion with. The Martians have had to adapt to humanity as much as we've had to adapt to them - certain weapon match-ups ended pretty badly for them. It's a two-way street, this war.

    >What is the deal in Spain and Switzerland? What is going on in China? Is there a China?

Switzerland is having a rough time; their natural mountain defenses don't help as much against Martians; who seem to utilize their "drop-from-orbit" ability haphazardly and infrequently (so they still help, of course.) Spain; the Iberian peninsula, is currently a major front; and some well-known names are kicking ass and taking names down there.

Close distance and enter the AOE, fly a banking turn at altitude to put as much sustained fire on the watercraft as possible. Since we can't actually pull her out of the water, we'll have to send in a few witches to do so while keeping a couple at altitude with us to serve as top cover, and to make sure no uninvited guests screw with the recovery.

Incidentally, when you didn't show up on Thursday, we had a LONG discussion thread about what to do with Minna.

We decided to move our stuff into her room as revenge for kicking us out, and use the opportunity to tell her that the watch was not meant as some grand romantic gesture.

Some people weren't in that thread, but that was what was decided then.

    >What exactly do the martians look like? I keep imagining them as the Neuroi from Strike Witches.

Martians themselves; pic related (thank you Crix.) Martian engineering aesthetics: Shivans meet steampunk. They like the blacks and reds, but they also typically have pipes and valves and all sorts of weird shit sticking out everywhere; it's probably quite practical and efficient given whatever rules their tech runs on, which we don't understand very well. They love asymmetry as much as we love symmetry, so those protrubences are usually worked in as the asymmetric aspect. They actually look decent, even to human eyes.

    >What is going on in China? Is there a China?

Very much so. China's got some of the older and more powerful Witch lines known to be kicking around; all that Romance of The Twelve Katas shit or whatever, so the Japanese attacks didn't hurt them as badly. The conflict between the Communists and Anti-Communists, on the other hand, is much worse.

I will happily and freely railroad anything so pants-on-head retarded that it'd break everything forever; and/or do enough railroading to honor the spirit of the vote without breaking the simple logistical aspects (since 99% of the time it's just that anon didn't read well enough, I didn't write well enough, or both.)

As for love interests; you're going to have to bust your ass to actually succeed with one at *all.* There's some fucked-up shit under the surface you haven't hit yet. I mean, we've got lolis thrown into the horrid meat-grinder of war, that's gonna leave some scars. More then in our timeline, that's for damn sure. Graf Spee survived 1939, the Arizona is still afloat and fighting, Richelieu is doing her thing in the Indian Ocean. The Martians have crippled a few ships, but have yet to put one down for the count.

    >hey planefag, how many German V weapons made it out of Germany, and how many researchers

Pretty much all of them, though construction efforts are iffy - the Martians play merry hell with raw materiel availability. V-1s are being employed regularly against Martian ground bases, but the V-2 doesn't really have a guidance system good enough to hit something smaller then England yet, nor any targets... the size of England worth shooting at.

Nobody can really spot the Martian 'ships' assumed to be in orbit. Their troops just kind of... appear, almost, in their aircraft or whatnot.

Jet technology is in development, and nuclear energy is being hastily studied; but very carefully - nobody quite knows what kind of energies the Martians can detect.

Reverse-engineering of Martian tech is ongoing, too.

Breaking formation at the crucial moment for the sake of a single aviator would probably get a few Witches killed. But if you don't, the downed Witch is in deep shit. It's an impossible situation; Sophie's Choice, a Knights Fork. Only two choices, both with outcomes you detest.

In short, it's a lot like shopping for cigs at the base PX.

And you fucking HATE the base PX.

"SEAN, ALL THE JUICE, LIGHT'EM UP!" you scream as Martians and Humans hurtle towards the merge. Sean reacts instantly, and the contacts on the small terminal-targeting scope on your panel light up like beacons. You're blasting radar energy into the Martians faces; which may or may not blind them - nobody's quite sure how they navigate.

But it's well-known that they're very, very good at homing in on radar emissions themselves, and you've just lit yourself up like a fucking Christmas tree.

You finesse the yoke and roll your Black Widow through a single defensive barrel roll, the night around you lighting up with tracers and the bright flares of minirocket motors as you roar through the enemy formation. The radio explodes with chatter as the Witches on your wings go to work on the enemy.

"Chasing us!" Sean says tersely. Oh yeah, you got their attention, all right.

They both have issues, and trying to compare and contrast them is impossible. Psychological issues aren't something you can quantify or rationalize like that. You always need to treat them with the same degree of seriousness and dedication if you want to help resolve them, because no matter what the source or age of the trauma, the pain is the same.

Martians are never easy to predict or outguess, but they tend to respect radar, which is why good radar operators are so prized. HOW they respect it, however, is never easy to predict.

"Two looping on us!" Sean shouts, and you know he's spotted the Martians silhouetted against the moon during their vertical reversal.

"What kind!?" you as, putting the Widow into a steep left-hand bank and beginning a gentle turn.

"The fucking dangerous kind I don't fucking know!" Sean snaps back. "Ian, the fucking turret now!"

The hardest part of dog-fighting is timing - and the hardest part of timing is having the steel balls to stick to it against enemies you can't see. You sense the Martians looping back through the night sky, sense that they'd be coming over the top of their loop, putting their nose on you right... about...

NOW. You bank the aircraft even harder, flipping it inverted, and haul into a sharp, terrible split-S.

Erica is too awesome for issues.

Shirley just wants to go faster than anyone ever.

Eila and Sanya are in lesbians with each other, so they can keep each other stable.

Zucchini is too young and spazzy to develop any major issues yet.

    Perrine is Ian's problem.

At the top of their loop, the Martians are at almost a complete standstill, and they've significant vertical separation. They must be a good two hundred, two-fifty above you when you both start your dives.

Except nothing dives like a P-61. Hauling back on the yoke you tuck your fighter into an upside-down loop, but just as you come through the "bottom," aimed downward at a steep angle, you roll the other way and pull back again, diving straight down. Your fighter can only go so fast without disintegrating, you don't want to get your ass blown off by a lucky long-range shot, and you don't want to escape the Martians just yet.

You want to sucker them lower.

And according to Sean, lower they come. Keeping track of your enemy is tough in daylight; at night it's like playing hide-and-seek with bazookas. (In Sanya's case, quite literally.) Even with a half-moon and low cloud cover, spotting a black-painted aircraft (or Martian) is no easy feat, even inside knife-fighting distance.

But you've got three pairs of eyes, and... well, nobody's counted the eyes on a Martian, and... oh fuck it, you're going to kick their ass, that's the gist of it.

You drag the Martian fighters down to four thousand feet, then three. You slow your evasives for just a second.

    "Sean, fire!"

    "No target!"

"DO IT, ASSHOLE!" you scream, and Sean obligingly fires blindly at nothing, giving away your position. Thus baited, you snap the Widow into a gentle downward spiral; which is to say there's not much spiraling and a lot of diving like a fucking black banshee into the depths of hell. Your eyes glued to the altimeters, you haul back on the flight yoke with all your might to level the fighter off just above the waves, moving at almost five-hundred-ten miles per hour - very, very fucking fast for a Widow.

"We're mopping them up! Ghostrider, you split their formation!" Minna calls. That's exactly what would've happened to the Witches had the Martians any discipline, but you dangle an airborne radar at them and they just go for it like a yorkie chasing a flashlight beam. Sucks to be them. "Good thinking; leave the maneuvering fights to us! What's your twenty, ghostrider?"

She's intelligently stopped shining her penlight around; the Martians have to hunt for her now. Time is short, natch.

But will it be quicker to flee the Martians, or kill them?

How much confidence do you have in yourself and your Black Widow as a true fighter?

On one hand, engaging might be suicidally stupid and just the kind of mistake I'm waiting for MC to make to spur some character development. On the other hand, refusing to engage might reveal said voters to be pussies who think the way Europeans do; that only anorexic fighters that weight less then tissue paper can be maneuverable and dangerous and anything with huge engines and obscene power is pff! compensating~

Well, our power to weight ratio isn't bad, and our rate of climb isn't bad either. In theory we could enter a climbing turn to regain altitude and re-engage.

However, our turret's dorsal, so we could weave a little and keep our ass covered while en route to the speedboats. After chopping them into firewood, we could then re-engage.

I'd be partial to killing those boats. The witch bought some time by turning off the light, but she's not out of danger, and they still have a last known position to work off of.

    Five-ten MPH.

    Two bandits behind you.

    Zero altitude.

    "Leave the maneuvering to us."

Deep inside you primal fire stirs, the heat and rage of a true fighter pilot born. You yearn to apply yourself to the Widow with all your soul, merging yourself with steel and aluminium to push the magnificent machine to her utmost limits, flying within an inch of your life to delay, disorient, and ultimately defeat your enemy. You long for the challenge, the fight, the triumph -

    - but now is not the time. Somebody's in trouble, and you're the only one in position to help.

"Sean, spot!" you cry, and pull up on the Widow just a bit, climbing at a slight angle, stretching that smash from the dive as far as it'll go. You're hoping Sean will spot the silhouette of your bandits against the moonlight reflected by the water of the Channel.

"... Seven O'Clock, four-hundred yar- DUCK!" You shove the yoke down and stamp the rudder left, and tracers drift past moderately distant on your right. "Think we pissed 'em off."

"We're pretty good at that, yeah," Ian says dourly.

There's an old joke Marines, Army infantry, and other pseudo-sentient lifeforms like to tell: that people join the Air Force only because they like being able to retreat at five-hundred miles per hour. The standard rejoinder is "we're just attacking in another direction."

Which is exactly what you're doing.

"Sean, get that shore spotter on the horn with the other radio!" you cry out. "Is the goddamn lighthouse on!?"

"Two O'Clock, shitforbrains," Ian says tersely. Damn, he's got sharp eyes.

"Get that kid to guide us in," you tell Sean. You know roughly where you are - at least two or three miles out, over the Channel - but finding the Martian attack boats is going to be a bitch because, you know, it's fucking night.

You adjust course to take you back towards the English coast and the downed Witch when more minirockets come zipping over your canopy.

"Hold on to your butts," you say tersely. Diving a little, you trade your meager altitude for airspeed, leveling off about fifty feet above the waves, throw your engine mixtures full-rich, slam the air scoops wide open, the radiator cowlings shut, ram the throttles forward against the stops -

    - and hit the thumb-toggle on the throttle for War Emergency Power.

The massive Double-Wasp radials surge and roar as water-injection slams fresh power into hot pistons. You feel the surge of energy pour through the Black Widow as the Double-Wasps really hit their stride, sucking in fuel and air voraciously. These new twinchargers really, REALLY kick ass. Manifold boost pressure jumps from around 50 PSI to a solid 62... then 64... then finally stops around 65, which is a good five PSI more then an ordinary Widow manages on full WEP.

Of course, your engine temperatures are skyrocketing alarmingly, too. Fiddling with the trim tabs a bit, you sleek the fighter for maximum performance and the Widow responds, settling down and almost flying herself, every ounce of energy pouring into hauling ass.

"Got the kid - we need to move left a bit."

You do so, tilting the fighter into a very, very gentle bank, slowly drifting to the right heading without sacrificing much power.

    "Are they keeping up?"

"Just barely?" Sean says. "Think we're slipping away. Hard to tell."

"If we slow down they're gonna be all over us like white on rice," Ian says.

    "So?"

"So how the hell are we gonna shoot up those boats?"

    "I...."

    What a good question.

    "I have an Idea."

"Oh sweet Jesus Mary Mother and Joseph," Sean begins, "Forgive me Padre, for I have sinned like a motherfucker..."

Your crew is familiar with your Ideas, and no matter how well they work, they never appreciate them.

You're a decent shot with aerial guns - even good, on occasion. But Ian, as you've noted, is a fucking artist. And right now, you need the best.

The only problem is, the P-61 only has one turret... and it's on the top.

"I see 'em," Ian says. "Wakes in the water."

Squinting, you see them too; moonlight catching the sharp wakes spreading outward at right-angles to the natural Channel waves, moonlight caught in their foam. The Martian attack boats aren't making much effort to be subtle, and even less then a mile from shore, they don't seem too worried about shellfire. Probably because they know shore batteries won't fire with a friendly so close.

They're not counting on you, however.

You come thundering in at an insane four-sixty, which is unheard of smash for a Widow on the 'deck. Your eyes flick at the engine temperature gauges - at two-sixty Celsius, and pushing for two-seventy.

Pulling back, you grab about three hundred feet of room. "Hey, Ian."

    "Yeah?"

"Don't fucking miss," you say, and then roll the Widow inverted.

Well, there's that commando raid that they pulled, and the leaving behind of assassination bots with the massive surprise attack as a cover.

So yeah, it may be some kind of doctrinal change, or some new strategic genius of a Martian got promoted to their version of a High Command.

One would assume it to be a matter of a change in tactics. If flying down their throats gets them little, then trying to knife them in their sleep and capture specimens for research is the true X-Com way to do it.

As it is, I don't belive we've legitimatly saved their asses in a dogfight from certain death anywhere near as many times as we've just shot Martians with hand guns.

A scant three-hundred feet above the water, moving at four-hundred-sixty miles per hour, UPSIDE FUCKING DOWN, you arrive in thunder and fire, all guns blazing, an avatar of death exploding out of the night.

With the elevator trim wheel rammed as far up as it goes, you let your nose drift down ever so slightly and thumb the cannon trigger, cutting loose with a hail of 20mm rounds in the general direction of the head of one boat-wake as Ian lines up and and the top-turret speaks. Your firing pass is over in two seconds.

"pull up pull up pull up pull up pull up up up up UP UP UP" Sean is chanting from the back, and for one you're in wholehearted agreement. With the yoke shoved against your instrument panel, the Widow slowly... SLOWLY claws back the airspace lost from your firing run, until you finally steal enough to risk rolling upright again.

"CLIFF CLIFF CLIFF CLIFF" Ian is howling, and why yes, indeed, there's a cliff. You haul the nose up with all your might, slashing the left-hand throttle and standing on the rudder to throw the Widow into the bank. You pull into the steep chandelle just in time, the limestone cliffs bright and shiny in the weak moonlight.

"I hate you. So much. It's unreal," Sean is monolouging from the back.

Fighters? FUCK the fighters. If they can keep up with this shit , draw a bead and actually HIT - at NIGHT - then they deserve the kill. With the engines redlined you've got smash to spare, so you burn some in a hard turn to reverse back towards the circling Martian boats.

"not - again - " Ian says sickly.

"Pussy!" you crow, but you grab for a little altitude this time, giving up as much speed as you dare with the Martian fighters still in the dark somewhere - then, over the right spot, you dive steeply, bringing the sea out front into the arc of Ian's turret.

You can't find the ghostly trace of boat-wake fast enough to nudge the fighter's nose, so you settle for hosing the ocean with high-explosive cannon shells. Ian fires as well, though you suspect he's got a target. Every time Ian's guns chatter, some Martian regrets it. Leveling out again, you eye the gauges. Cylinder-head temps are dangerously high - you can't keep this up much longer.

You dip the nose, grabbing a little more airspeed to loop back on the boats and do another half-blind, high-angle firing pass-

"MTBs got her!" Sean whoops. "Say again, rescue launch just got our Witch!"

You and Ian both whoop with exultation as you turn the Widow towards England, staying low and fast. This time you climb enough to mind the fucking cliffs, and pull back the throttles a bit before throwing open the engine cowlings and radiator flaps, mindful of the fucking vortex issue that almost killed you a few days ago. You eye the gauges nervously until the needle starts dropping out of the red zone. You leave WEP on for a minute for the cooling bonus of the water-injection before shutting it off.

    "What's her condition?"

"Can't raise 'em," Sean grumps. "Also, fuck you."

    "Why?"

    "Fuck you so much."

"Second," Ian says from the back.

    "That was awesome?"

"Soon as I've got time to think about it I'm going to hurl," Ian moans.

"Soon as we land I'm going to kick your fucking ass," Sean moans. "This isn't a one-seat plane, asshole."

"Ghostrider!?" somebody calls on the radio. "Ghostrider, where the fuck are you?"

"Oh Sean, your tears are... delicious," you say. "Like those expensive swiss chocolates Minna keeps in the desk where she thinks no one will find them."

There's dead silence in your plane. Well, besides the thunderous roar of 36 overtaxed, overheated cylinders. A deafening silence, indeed.

"...your intercom's slaved to the radio, Mac."

You grin the shit-eating grin of the satisfied asshole.

    "So?"

We'll have moved our own booze and replaced it with someone else's beforehand, of course. We're not stupid.
