8 KB Evolution: Underwater: the pocket ocean. non gentelman 04/03/12(Tue)03:07 No.18557635
First of all, this thread is just for fun. next, a gent by the name of DeusExMachina is gonna be making his own most likely better thread, and considering im just standing in for indo while he is gone...in short...go play the other Evo game when it comes. lurkers, you dont have to be artists, just good story tellers. if your story is good enough someone may redraw your creature into something that you can edit slowly with the zoom tool in MS paint,
    --------------
rules: what happens in the ocean, stays in the ocean...and whats to stop you from leaving you ask me? Its the fucking tundra Sea bitch. there is a massive sheet of crystal clear ice on the surface curving downward extending into a giant water filled bubble for about 80 miles in any direction.. it lets light in, but you don't get to go out. on top that that, the tundra beasts are on that ice, and they want your tender body. fish. you a fish now bitch.
    ------
    1. Ykex'ry- eel like.
    2. Hem'Fur- Oddly resembels the M-4 carbine.
    3. Glub- little spherical creature with 3 tentacles and a top fin. wish it the best.
    4. Crub- its like a soft shelled crab, with a glowing dingly ball and no claws.
    5. Skrimp- Shrimp like. odd.
    6. Seekeed- plant. most likely to become an unstoppable juggernaught of terror even though its just a fucking harmless plant right now. fucking plants. fuck...FUCK!!!
    7. Kwenom- Sea Urchin/ anemone like.

i will be moderating but not playing in this one. rules are simple. you take one of these shitty drawing and make it your own. transform it and craft it. Give it a story with each evolution. Why does it grow what it does, what is it hunting? Conflict. This one is going to be a lot more savage in its rules, and harder. True extinction is possible with no survivors. there is less love in the world.

In response to low light conditions, the Seekeed begins to grow much longer, broader leaves. What was once a series of sea-floor ferns becomes an alien forest of slow moving greenery, twisting and un-twisting ocean currents.
These become home to both prey seeking shelter, and predators seeking a place to hide.
The root becomes larger to store the additional energy. The skrimps continually eat small holes into the leaves.

In turn, they become slightly less mobile.

The glub have evolved their camouflage even further, gaining the ability to change their pigmentation to a combination of colours as necessary, enabling them to mimic natural placements such as rocks and ice chunks with all the necessary shading.

Their fins have lengthened and strengthened to allow them to get away from those that still see through the camo and stay out of the reach of pesky Crub.

Crubs begin a burrowing behavior to better ambush prey. In so doing, the fast growing and light-seeking Seekeed begins to actually latch onto and grow into the Crubs. The two begin a new symbiotic relationship: The Crubs gain constant camoflouge, and the Seekeed gains a constant light source by way of the Crub's dingly ball.

This also allows the Crub to better ambush prey. It's nearly impossible to tell which Seekeed is attached to a Crub and which is not.

The Hem'Fur diverge into two distinct species: some further explore the niche of a bottom-dwelling scavenger, their "suppressors" flattening out into a wide shovel. Their throats have adapted to expand to incredible diameter for ambushing fellow bottom-feeding creatures.

The second strain arises from a topographical anomaly: a latent charge in some portions of the upper fluid layers aids in the development of their "suppressors" into precision electrical emitters. Muscle blocs beneath their rails generate a current that can be sent along their mineral horn to stun even large prey.

the Glub's flesh grows more pliable, flexible in it's way to expand with the Glub's gaping maw when open. It's stomach and oral fluids have also grown significantly more potent, breaking down a struggling foe in a mater of moments if their massive teeth do not finish the job.

The glub strengthens it's jaws and fins, making them more resilient and more flexible respectively.

It's bones grow stronger and it grows more ridges that suck in water to act as propulsion systems around it's fins, using them to give it a speed of motion at a range unmatched by others in it's class.

It slowly stalks up on foes using it's camoflague abilities to keep itself hidden and then dashes at the prey with great speed, clamping down on it with it's powerful jaw muscles and attempting to rend vital areas. They are willing stalk wounded prey for long periods if they escape.

Some Hem'Fur are forced by increasing competition to live in the lower depths of the ocean, where the fine particles of sand and soil muck up their internal parts. Due to this, a slow process of restructuring their body to be more reliable in adverse conditions, though less capable of rapid and precise movement. They make up for this with more powerful musculature which ensures that any hits they do land on their prey are more punishing. Their colouration also changes to better blend in with the sea floor.

May I add that this part of ocean is slowly getting deeper? Of course, the vents are protruding from the arctic ocean, but the ocean floor's kinda... sinking. Lower. Maybe tectonic activity causes this.

The leafy body of the Seekeed becomes slightly more rigid and much tougher, more like a polypropylene in texture than normal plant matter. As such, it no longer twists around as easily in the ocean currents and remains straight. It also becomes incredibly difficult to 'chew'.

Additionally, it seems to discolor oddly at the edges...

The glub do not react well to the change in environment.
They do not react well at all.
They are confused and slowly die out, the ones that remain mere shadows of their former selves.

They are forced to follow around the Ykex'ry and eat what they do not along with anything stuck to them. They move in small groups of 3, fiercely defending their chosen Ykex'ry from predators or other Glub with no homes.

The moment you let the Lem exist i dug into the threads of this planet, you let me incinerate the atmosphere, that's love right there. we have something. Oh by the way, with all of the threads i took care of, the events mirror each other a little, not everything is the same but it at least makes reference to the ecological disasters/ changes that happen. what is happening now is about black dawn time, that way when the species come fourth they will all be at about the same tech level.

The pocket ocean was open to the world, if only thru cracks in its icy shell. Now the pocket ocean was open to the blood of the world. In deepest parts of the trench where the geothermal vents pumped their nutrients into the water the ground ripped and sunk. Deeper and deeper, did the pit form until it struck magma, water created a layer of super pressurized steam on the magma that could not rise up due to the weight of the water crushing down on it. The ocean has a new light. Orange and ruddy, threatening constantly. The strange new chemicals that spilled into the depths of the abyss stimulate the creatures, a natural amphetamine it drives them to rage.

(this started out a lot better in my head)

The Glub undergo several drastic changes before settling, their biology unsure how to adapt to the rapidly changing world.

Their flippers fuse and become more muscular, allowing for extremely silent swimming even if it causes a loss in instant maneuverability.
They develop a vicious contact poison, a callback to their old vomiting tactics, supercharged with electricity to shock and debilitate. They develop a hard shell to store all the delicate organs required to do generate these compounds.
Their primitive brain under the hardpoint in their skull develops a bit more, more able to decipher the information from it's infrared vision and electrical sensing in good time.
They begin to recognize foes and odds of winning and use their colour changing abilities to assist their chances. They broadcast violent bright colours to those that are stronger, and fade into the background to stalk weaker foes, silently falling upon them and smothering them in poison and stunning current.

They move deeper into the abyss in groups of 5-7 regaining some of their old skill with communication.
And there, they wait, periodically gliding to the upper reigons to whittle down a crub or tear down some plantlife.

The Crub grows ever stranger, gaining an additional segment per leg, plus one additional set of legs for better mobility.
Its several eyes become much more complex, the stalk in particular becoming capable of seeing into the infrared spectrum in order to better find both thermal vents and prey.

Its main hook-claw becomes flexible and whip-like, and trades the jagged, serrated edge for a single edge running the length of the limb segment.

you guys pick the species you want most to progress to tribal stage. I have faith. from there, ill offer some random traits for the new tribal and a story for you.
    ----------
The abyss aka boiler became more and more hostile to life, the extremophiles that lived on the geothermal vents started to go higher and higher away from the rising magma pool, and as the magma pool rose the pressure keeping it in check fell. The creatures have a limited time to progress to where they can evacuate their watery cage. The only way out is thru each other. whatever comes out of the abyss better be about as fucking metal as pic related.

With the amphetamines in the water cranking evolutionary drive into overload, the Seekeed and their symbiotic microorganism colonies have formed an immutable bond. In exchange for allowing the glowing bacteria to flow through their fluid channels and operate their forms like horrifying puppets, the Seekeed are granted mobility. The host body provides a home for the bacterial colony, as well as a defense in the form of their poison-producing leaf cells. Modified colonies act as light-sensing "eyes," and a pitcher mouth is engineered from its root ball, now used only for the storage of nutrients taken from its prey.

A simple plant is invaded by alien bacterium, and becomes a scarecrow with a protein swarm acting as chemical hivemind. The Mandrake Seekeed are born.

    >MORE METAL! TURN IT UP TO 11!

    The Crub become the Cruelb.

Fleshy, highly toxic tentacles burst forth from the hard, chitinous shell of the beast. The eyestalk bursts into flames, and can direct them by focusing its vision. It grows two great horns to better aim this new power.

It hunts by stunning with its firey Eye of Pain, inflicting not only burns, but a lash of psionic energy that communicates only suffering.
The Cruelb then drags the stunned and shivering thing off with its tentacles, the neurotoxin of which lights up every pain detecting nerve it possibly can. Most creatures usually die just from the sheer sensory overload. It then brings it back to the tribe to be devoured wholesale. If threatened, it may also use its legs to pierce an attacker.

As a society, the Cruelb prefer to remain as a web of nearby individuals. They have neighbors, but those neighbors only interact when they need to, and their social interactions are often brief and to the point.
The exception to this solitude is when dealing with other intelligent species. Every member Cruelb tribe will bring as many numbers to bare as possible when interacting with even one intelligent outsider passes through. If less than three Cruelb are available, they will attempt to skitter away and hide rather than fight or communicate.
When communicating, the Cruelb will attempt to surround the creature and stare at it. Since the vast majority of other species do not understand the native language of complex blinking the Cruelb choose to use with each other, they will for the sake of outsiders, communicate psionically. This is incredibly disconcerting when an entire tribe is doing so.
    >> Anonymous 04/05/12(Thu)04:22 No.18582108
    >>18582103
The Cruelb reproduce much like fish, with the female seeking a suitably damp location, laying her eggs, and then leaves awaiting a male to come by the scent and fertilize them.
The tentacles of the Cruelb are incredibly sensitive, and require constant cleaning, as they are in fact a part of the innards of the Cruelb that breaks through during a molting phase. As such, the Cruelb are unsuited to the desert, and dehydrate very quickly. Instead, the Cruelb prefer damp caves, swamps, beaches, and forests (in that order) wherever possible. Despite having the appearance of arachnids, they do not spin webs - however they do inadvertently make webs of viscous slime wherever they live.

That's it. That's as metal as I can make these guys.

    Further developing Seekeed lore:

The bacteria within the Seekeed host shells, henceforth referred to as the Mandrake Bacterium, has become a supercolony entity through its accelerated evolution. The billions of trillions of organisms contained within one host act together through chemical communication systems as something similar to a body-wide nervous brain. This biological computer can understand complex patterns and has shown to demonstrate forethought and planning to a degree that puts it on par with Earth's great apes.

The host body's barbels act as a grasping mechanism, protruding from the pitcher mouth in a radial arrangement of four. While the grasping tendrils do most of the fine work, the two pectoral fronds and large tail-like frond act as both propulsion and weapon. The tips of each frond contain special cells that produce a paralytic toxin exuded through the blades of the host's rigid, hooklike frond terminus. This toxin is most commonly used to subdue larger prey so that the colony's slow digestive process can take the time it needs to absorb the prey.

As a species, they tend to group together in small pods of seven to ten host bodies. While they do have some degree of social hierarchy, pods are usually affiliated by shared territory and convenience of group hunting only. As beings who reproduce through an asexual seed dispersal, they have no familial ties or concept of biological relation to one another.

Mandrakes prefer to life in aquatic or amphibious environs, ranging from warm shallow seas, to mangrove swamps, to the cold, dark abyss from whence they came.

Seek'kre- (if you both like this im gonna go for it and merge your two creations into something epic, it just sat there and sang to me.) The seakeed has always existed on the Kreub. during the time of intense biological changes the Kreub benefited massively from the bacterial puppeteering colony in the Seakeed Mandrake Strain. It was this hybridized creature. The flexability of the mandrake with the mental capacity of the Seakeed. Each creature must struggle to establish its identity as it develops while the various minds vie for control of the body. A fully Developed Seek'kre's mind is actually made up of the 3 different entities that compose its body, collapsed into one perfect merger. This flexibility and intelligence allowed them to withstand the onslaught that is the Cruelb.
((redraw this shit to your hearts content,i too, am no amazing artist.)) now we wait on the Hem'fur and Glub. They have till tomorrow, then we vie for rights to progress to the tribal status.

Glub, Kwenom, failed to make it to the tribal stage of evolution. The Cruelb and now Seek'kre now vie for progressing to tribal stage. The Seek'kre are already at a functional form for tribal stage. The Cruelb are there story wise. I'm going to throw out a proposition for the Cruelb's next stage. its not the best and i know it can do better then what I'm offering maybe something completely different then that, i don't know. the concept is too bad ass to pass up.

The frowgmagnon have sorta plateaued and at this point any bodily evolutions would be likely revolving around adapting to civil life, muscle/skeletal structures and the like.
