Great, a QTG right as I'm about to go to sleep. I'll pose a question and maybe have an answer when I wake up.

How many weeks should I wait before I start shouting the name of the QM I am missing desperately into the QTG, like a widow staring into the sea?
>>
quests have been very detrimental to my sleep and performance. I panic whenever QMs fall ill or disappear, and lose entire days I had planned to do productive things in to unexpected threads.

I'd say one.

Just leaving this here. I don't think many fa/tg/uys use it yet (for a time it used to be almost exclusively the domain of /g/ and /a/) but it would definitely help both QM and players enjoy the threads better.

I wrote up and uploaded the Electronic Warfare Officer Quest combat rules draft (quest concept: you're an EWO on the Not!Enterprise). I'd like someone to look over them and tell me what they think. Please note that although the rules are fairly long and somewhat involved, from the player side of things, all you do is play one or two of 5-ish cards each turn; everything else is me, the QM, doing stuff and should take 2-3 minutes of crunching/table referencing based on some quick practice.

Earlier this week, I woke up late for a midterm because I stayed up later than intended keeping up with a quest.

I'd argue that was my own stupidity being detrimental to my sleep schedule, but I think it's still applicable.
>>
I've been thinking about running a quest based on Leo Frankowski's Conrad Stargard series.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conrad_Stargard

The basic premise is that a modern polish engineering student finds himself in 13th century Poland, a few years before the Mongols invade.

What does /tg/ think?

I'm about to crash, but if it looks like there's interest when I get up in the morning, I'll run it.
>>
>>28064375
Well, okay, but are you Polish and an engineer?
>>
Does MHQ have a Twitter yet? Boss said they'd get one but nothing has turned up.
>>

>>
>>28064408
I'm always pretending that I'm working on something.

All in all, I'm not the one that proposed that.
>>
>>28064402
No, but I did say loosely based.

I don't have to know how to personally plan out an industrial scale water pump, or a wind powered loom to know that it's possible, given time and resources.
>>
>>28064453
but how will you ignore /tg/'s silly experiments to break the laws of physics if you can't prove that something is impossible?
>>
>>28064462
Yeah, what he said. I'm not telling you should have engineering degree outright, but some knowledge would clearly help your ass.

>>
>>28064605
I think the 5-9th episodes of Morestsu (aka Bodacious) Space Pirates had electronic warfare in some interesting situations.

Mostly, it comes down to defenses (firewalls, trap options, mirroring programs) and attacks (infiltrators, codebreakers, detection systems for traps). You might also consider looking into some of the Ghost in the Shell electronic warfare (barrier mazes, external brain sub-boxes for trapping black ice, etc).

>>

wat

Well, that hasn't happened(Aside from one friend who i spoke to face to face who was more bored than anything else by my writing), at least to my knowledge. Though, I suppose this has served to flush me out.

WQ notes are still being worked on, in the middle of my shittyunproductive mood. uBut, things have been busy on this side of the screen. I am sorry. probably shouldn't be up this late watching 4chan at any rate. Go talk about real people with real quests already, shoo, shoo. And while I do appreciate the sympathy, I am earnestly not suicidal, and QFGs should be about fresh ideas instead of tired ground.

tl;dr nobody invited me to the secret clubhouse if one exists.

uhh no? the first thread went well and the QM said he was gonna run another a sometime in the next week

>is it good?
massive improvement over GuPG, the players actually have agency amazingly enough, also, the QM has a unique and interesting way of dealing with dialogue that seems to be working very well, he presents 3 choices when its time to speak; "Boast", "Neutral" & "Polite" or variations using latin for when we need to get sufficiently wordy

The underhive of Megalopolis 5 became home to thousands of refugees after the collapse of the Northern Union at the hands of the Dragon Lords. One of the refugees is the MC, who's stuck there, trying to earn for a living in a town slowly going to hell. Everyone wants to leave, no one succeeds.

Doing various jobs, the MC discovers that the Dragon Lords are coming for Megalopolis 5 next, and that the government is planning on leaving the refugees there to fend for themselves while the rich corporate fucks flee. And she soon finds a reason for the Dragon Lords attack - a mysterious warrior with powers that could turn the tide of war is stuck there with the refugees.

She must find the warrior, get out of the city, and bring down both the corrupt government and the Dragon Lords before the its too late.

Maybe have the MC be a part of some band of mercenaries. It's easier to get a job done when you're not alone.
So you get smaller arcs focused on getting individual shit done, while you devise an overarching plot that somehow connects all the threads together.
>>
>>28067415
>For the same reason that when a human loses both his legs, we dont cut off his head and stuff it in a jar.
So about your application to the Adeptus Mechanicus... IT'S BURMED.

>Explain your reasons for dislike, I demand it.
Not that anon, but it's quite trite and treading into Mary Sue territory.
>>
>>28067406
>Explain your reasons for dislike, I demand it.
That descriptions is pretty much 'chosen one' territory, and while that can be done okay/subverted, I really don't like them in my cyberpunk (or cute monstergirls for that matter), even if that were to turn out to be the case.
>>
>>28067429
I'm currently planning on having her be a bit younger, with a focus on doing odd jobs for groups LIKE mercenaries, dropping packages or fixing minor things and the like. This would allow embroilment with shadowruns and corporations without actual involvement.
This stuff is all still very wishy washy and undecided at this point.

Armored Renegade Quest is up

It was December 1944 when you, Fritz Heller, last took up arms as part of Operation Samson against the Sidarxi Empire. It's been six years since Earth fell to the fae-like aliens, and five years since you moved to America to escape the purges of the renegade human soldiers. However, as the century comes to its midpoint, the voices of the underground are organizing one final assault. Just when you thought the skeletons in your closet were buried, a Sidarxi intelligence officer barges in and she knows what you are: a renegade. It would be fine if she just wanted you dead, but she wants you to put on the armor again.

>Fun Version:
Space elves invade earth in late 1930s. Earth bands together and invents power armor. However, resistance is eventually crushed, and earth is under alien control. You used to wear power armor, but fled to America instead of surrendering. Now, an alien intel officer wants your skills for some inscrutable purpose.
>>
>>28068423

>>
>>28068405
I had a math class that had all the homework done online. It was 15% of the grade for the class I guess 15% is just one of those numbers..

I'd planned to do it all in one day because it was easy as fuck, but I ended up doing quests instead and totally forgetting about it.

Wasn't even that mad about the grade, still got a B for the class, but I was fucking pissed that I wasted $50 for the access code thing for the site.
>>
>>28068460
Depends. Were they good jobs? I'm going to go with the same Dedication.

Just don't go bankrupt and lose your internet connection. The quest ain't gonna write itself without you.
>>
>>28068467
For you, it was the day humanity fell.

For the brown space elves, it was Tsunday.
>>
>>28068423
I'm the one who said you should kitbash cliches, and sex selling was relevant. For my quest.

Besides that, I dunno. Just make sure people are somewhat realistic. Talk to people. Learn about people. See different personalities and motivations. Some people are very logical, that's usually a fault. Some people aren't logical at all. Design characters who are hard to deter, and ones who aren't. And recognize that these things are a spectrum.

I guess my biggest advice is to just go out and meet people until you've seen enough human behavior to make characters that are understandable, while still being engaging. Empathy is pretty important for writing characters. At least, it is for me.

Try observing a flame war. Take the side you don't agree with and think of why they agree with it. Try to understand their point of view, because you can use this. Do this until you run out of things you disagree with.

West Virginia. If you're content with doing a menial labor job and knowing your career is a dead-end, it's not at all a bad place. Quiet, surrounded by nature. I work six hours a day (though a good deal of it is spent goofing around), come home and just chill. Play some vidya, right stories and poems I'll never publish, fuck around on the internet. The "city" is so small that I can walk across it in an hour, so I don't need a car (though I do own a bike - good exercise).

Apartment isn't bad, either. Comes fully furnished (fridge, oven, microwave, dishwasher, washer+dryer, queen size bed, couch, and comfy chair), good neighborhood. TONS of space. Kitchen so damn big the four people could fit on my granite counter comfortably.

Yeah. I won't lie - I did feel that SM was a bit obtuse about that (he should know by now that we're going to poke at magic stuff we find), and that the password should have been something we had a shot at. I'd have rather left the altar alone entirely for the nonce, but Shadow has never been the sort to squash his curiosity.
>>
>>28068846
Not really. I think it's kinda hilarious how the entire thing wen't off like a nuke. I got enough enjoyment out of knowing that the Black Lady and her mooks would have been goin on their way, suddenly heard a massive fucking blast, and looked back to see a giant purple mushroom cloud right in the spot they were at 10 mins ago.

Slightly disappointed that we tried to guess the password instead of just going for the insta consume for more xp, but oh well.

Apparently the post thread fanfic stuff is run by Deculture before it gets posted and is all canon within the universe.

I wish I'd known this when I started reading the archives, because I skipped all of it and CBA to go back and read it.
>>
>>28069359
You know, I never thought about it before, but I think MGNQ has sort of become a self sustained fanfiction loop. There's fanfiction of a fanfiction, and then Deculture includes that fanfiction in the canon of the original fanfiction and expands on it.

What this essentially means is that it is fanfiction of a fanfiction of the original fanfiction. This is a self sustaining entity now.

>>28069359
The writefaggotry tells us about what else is happening in the world. What are you bitching about?
>>
>>28069437
Well, the write-ups are kind of murky in whether they count as fan-fiction. As mentioned they get run by Decu before they're started (and for each installment) to make sure they match the established MGNQ canon in his notes where appropriate, and isn't stupid otherwise. They vary a lot in relevance (some pretty much irrelevant, others super-relevant) and quality though.
>>
>>28069388
I tried to read it, I did. It's not BAD writing. It's just... not what I came to the thread to read about - even if the lack of user-input wasn't damning it already. It's like when an anime goes off on a tangent and ignores the MC for a while.

It's a QUEST. I want to participate in us DOING STUFF. But there's 10 posts, maybe 3 or 4 chances at user input, and then fanfiction time.
It... it was a let down.

how big a region should I prepare for a quest? I want to make a "city" but I really have no idea of how much scale that is.
>>
>>28069468
That's just because Decu writes really slow, anon. And his scenes are really, really detailed, so you get stuff like spending one whole session just talking to Kyuubei, then the next is just walking to that other girl. MGNQ is really a quest that's better marathonned, but that doesn't let you vote, so...

My intention is to possibly run a quest based on the Oni setting, a PC and PS2 third-person beat 'em up game. For those who don't know about the game, here are two links to the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oni_(video_game) and http://wiki.oni2.net/Main_Page. The two questions would be the following:

1. How interested would /tg/ be in seeing a quest based on this game be?

2. I'd like some suggestions or ideas as to the actual mechanics of the quest. I have a draft based on the WoD dot system, but any advice would be more than welcome! The more simple, the better.
>>
>>28069697
>The more simple, the better.
Minisix or ORE.

>>28069026
>Or maybe it's just that a lot of QMs can't into proper dice.

The worst thing a QM can do, is never say goodbye.
To so entertain me, to move me, to have me anticipating the next thread with every breath.
A thread that never comes.
First some minor confusion about why you're not on schedule, followed by worry and doubt - will you come back?
Then I tell myself a few lies, tell myself that something must have come up and you'll come back soon.
And then, every day, I die a little inside.
I watch weeks turn into months.
It hits me, one day. That you're not coming back.
And I sit down at my computer.
I open sup/tg/ and read the old archives, cat perched on my lap and a fresh cup of coffee in hand.
And I cry.

In the past when I've decided not to give up when things were going downhill in games I've GM'ed, it ended up being me dragging the game through the mud and things not really picking back up again. It's hard to get the feel right sometimes, whether it be campaigns or quests.

That's not to say I haven't had good campaigns run before, its just disappointing when a initially neat idea doesn't pan out the way you want it to.
>>
So, AoPH ended with a bit of a cliffhanger last time. We got separated from our squad, Goldenrod went into his abra-coma, Janine's missing, but we have the bird.

I get the feeling that more just might go wrong.

Still in retrospect I think we made the right call in not looking for Janine ourselves.

Endangering a helpless teammate to find another teammate doesn't really make sense.

hey /tg/, how would you feel about a Pro Wrestling Quest? Played within kayfabe as a rookie wrestler trying to climb his way up the ladder and win himself a shiny golden belt, along with whatever other motivation might arise. eh, I'd rather avoid using the actual, ugh, "WWE Universe", and go for a Not!WWF/E with more of a mix of iconic wrestlers in their prime/most popular moment or mix and match gimmicks, for instance, have Not!Undertaker be an undead biker rather than just a biker or undead. Maybe throw in a WCW brand instead of Smackdown and have it owned by Not!Shane and ran by Not!Bischoff, but the idea is to have some kind of idealized wrestling megacompany with a better mix of styles in it, more luchadores doing luchador things, more strong style workers.

No, but you'll annoy yourself a lot.

Work on it for at least seven hours (pure writing time).
>>
>>28070712
No. Just keep a consistent setting and keep notes on what happened. Everything else can be improv. Or even better, let your players do your job for you.
>>
>>28070712
Minimum of a sentence written about every major character or location the players could interact with, + mechanics.

But how many before you start the quest?
At least have the ending in mind. That's literally everything that will govern your pacing right from the start.
>>
>>28070753
>At least have the ending in mind
The quest hasn't even started and you're planning the ending already? Well, maybe if you plan on comparing months later with how much you've been derailed by your players..
>>
>>28070753
what if my "ending" is a series of episodic adventures with individual, short plots?
>>
>>28070134

I think they did. I got that impression.
>>
>>28070753
>At least have the ending in mind.
Oh shit, I don't. My quest is literally "Slice of life + doing stupidly dangerous shit while trying to grow more powerful". Is that bad?
>>
>>28070776
Seriously.

If you have a predetermined ending, what's even the point?
>>
>>28070841
Think of it like The Walking Dead: The Game. It's not about the destination, it's the journey that matters.

Of course, having one predetermined ending is a bit stupid, you should at least have three or four.
>>
>>28070817
Well, since we've become so adorable, it might be safe to say that even if they're here with us, we will likely never recognize any of them.

>>28070820

>>
>>28070862
so, if I'm doing episodic, I should have multiple endings for each episode?
>>
>>28070841
>>28070753

No ending planned. Have major events planned, ones that the characters may not be able to fully stop.
>>
>>28070776
Ending or end game or final battle or whatever, the quest isn't going to last forever. There is a final objective of some sort, or a series of objectives that thematically link the campaign to it's conclusion. At least this one thing of basic gm'ing can work for QM'ing as well.

>>28070783
Then just do that, obviously. You know your direction and that's the best step.

>>28070820
It's not bad. It just means you might have trouble establishing a direction halfway through. Someone already suggested using your players direction for that, so improvise.
SOL quests also never actually have to end either.
>>
>>28070820
Well, the problem is when you get tired of running it. If you don't plan to lead the quest to end you will probably just drop someday and this will happen: >>28069881
>>
>>28070885
>There is a final objective of some sort, or a series of objectives that thematically link the campaign to it's conclusion.
What you're thinking of is more like a checkpoint system to move plot forward than a set ending. That is good, yes. But a fixed end no matter what you do? That's stupid. Write a book instead.

>Quest that everybody loves

>entire world destroyed by asteroid that wasn't ever mentioned before
>>
>>28070914
It's not a fixed ending, I said NOTHING about a "fixed" ending. The ending is all I said.
The conclusion can be derived from the players choices and the variables of the story, it can be from the antagonists and the completion of their goals, it can be from anything that happened along the campaign and journey.

The point I'm trying to get across is that QM's need to be aware of their pacing and levels of closure and where it's going to come from.
If they don't think about where their going or just how many ways things finish themselves then they have no direction.
That can work for some quests, but not all stories are the same.

Slice of life, generally small scale. I am planning to keep it in a city, if possible. How much should I... make? How big even should a city be?
>>
>>28071795
Set a pace for yourself. Say, 5 minutes to let a decision be reached, 10 for you to type a post up.
15 minutes between content-rich posts.
Decide how long you expect to run (in minutes), and divide by your time between posts.
Now, beginning where your players begin, make every decision that takes you as far away from the plot and setting as possible until you run out of time.
>>
>>28071872
>Say, 5 minutes to let a decision be reached, 10 for you to type a post up.
That really depends on how many participants there are.
>>
Apart from the Commissar and Seraph MC sexualizing and a bit of trolling in regards to IR this thread has been way too pleasant so far.

Quick, somebody troll me, I'm not sure if I'm still in /tg/ anymore.
>>
>>28071795
I think it's like pokemon game. There's a lot's of areas and cities but since the player explore one at time it doesn't seem so big. Make it small (maybe 3-4 areas) at first and them add more if you feel like.
>>
>>28071854
You have to have at least one place where the action takes place (say, high school) and where the MC goes to rest (their home). As the story progresses, you might want to include a place where they go to chill out (mall), their friends' homes. Anything beyond that depends on the setting and the plot (a beach, police station, hospital, airport).

In short, have an idea about the places where most shit happens, everything else is optional, but once established it has to at least keep some consistency.
>>
>>28071934
It's a suggestion, not a commandment. Adjust as needed/expected.
Though for a starting quest, 5 minutes is probably about right.

Excepting IR's alters, who else went away? I blame arc for this. He came out of nowhere and suddenly QM quit left and right. His polite, patient persona is all a RUUUUUUUUSEEEEEEEE~

It's not yet been 4 days. Or has it? I can't into time and I've been sleeping 18 hours a day for the last 2 weeks.
>>
>>28072182
I-I don't know. Some time ago, I stopped sleeping normally. And then the power went out one night, and my clocks got all messed up and I never reset them. I use a custom desktop, and I removed the clock/calendar as needless clutter.
I've lost all concept of time. If it weren't for 4chan, I wouldn't even know the date.

Why should she? Old mister dragon made him a real suit of armor made from some old junk he found in his lair.

Before she goes to sleep, the dragon puts her in a really comfy bed with large fluffy pillows and reads her stories from the many books he has lying around. He never mentions that he got them from his adventuring buddies back when he was younger. He puts on some ridiculous large glasses, strokes his beard, and start weaving a tale about a young lamia princess who was strong as a hundred men, and as tough as a hundred dwarves, and as pretty as a hundred elves, and...

You get the idea, she was pretty badass.

And she'd go on adventures with her brave and loyal companion, a brave knight who always stands by her side, even when she sleeps so that scary monsters don't come out and eat her.

And when she finally falls asleep, she'll coil around an old telescope he gave her to look at the stars. She loved those things, as did he - after all, which dragon doesn't dream of flying among them?

He'd then rev up an old machine made of magical cogs whose only purpose is to play lullabies. He made it himself, ages ago, but he never found what song the machine should play before he met her. And as the gears slowly turn, he'd take the form of an old sage, and go out to work in a bookshop where he'd tell his tales to anyone who'd listen.

He never accepts money, only books and stories in return. When asked why, he always responds with a smile, that it's for someone dear to him.

I tried.

And then he was slain by the communist orc republik, since dragons are bourgeoisie pigs hoarding all the capital to themselves and the lamia made into a pair of boots for their totally not dictator leader.
