A fate we narrowly avoided listed above. Initiative has been rolled and let's let the blow land! Lucky you, get to go first.

    Anyway, let's start off strong.

Shouldn't we hide the use of a poison, though? Like, use it when we use a Willow's Whisper and grapple?

Then again, this IS a shinobi duel; poisons might be acceptable.

    Hey OP, which is it?

But it would deliver the poison, right? And when that poison hits his chakra system, he's going to bleed off chakra and be unable to control it. That should prevent him from even using the lightning armor again for this fight.

The posion is suppose to screw up his Charka Coils and make him unable to use lightning or Charka at all. Or just kill him out right.

Eh. Look at the guys dice pool compared to ours - it just seems to me like we're going to waste a free shot since I don't think we can beat his dice pool using the poison. Not to mention we can't use the buzzsaw effects on the sword anymore after we use the wind thing.

That's IF we use the seal on the sword. We were discussing using the wind seal on our gauntlet and bone-hand, and using it to get past the Third's armor and deliver the poison.
Once the poison take effect, he can't use anything involving chakra, and might just kill him outright.

6 you vs 4 him. Alright, let the carnage begin.
    First we assess the damage.

    (9 (Taijutsu)+4 (Martial Arts),+2 (Chakra Gauntlet's force), +5 (Wind vs Lightning))
20 dmg is very solid. Even against a huge target like the Raikage.

Additionally your poison lands and you deal 1/4 your damage in chakra loss. He then loses 1 chakra per turn from that point onwards. So he loses 5 chakra.

Lastly, the cutting power of the wind pierces him at the cellular level, your hand going right through his chest, that his chakra system is further disrupted by the wind chakra, knocking his Chakra Exhaustion limit down by 2. Instead of dropping at -1 or lower chakra, he now passes out at 1 chakra. Make that 2 for being injured. Yeah, he's also injured.

Lastly, he has to make a Rank+Chakra Control check at a -2 penalty (1 from injury and 1 from the wind damage) to even use chakra on his turn.

With a movement of utter precision and righteous anger you charge the chakra into your gauntlet, the jets on the elbow igniting and rocketing your blow forward. Everyone expected your hand to be stopped by the sheer power of his lightning armor.

Everyone was shocked, however, when your fingers began screaming with the wind as you sliced right through the armor like it wasn't even there and the Raikage gasped in shock as your hand was suddenly up to the wrist in his chest. He then let out a second cry of pain at the feeling of his system being riddled by the wind chakra.

(Now to roll Rank+Toughness-2 targeting Determination to not faint)

Waraji spends the whole night arm-wrestling Asuma and everyone has a good time. Partway through the night Kakashi joins you guys and though he recognizes you he is polite and fun none the less, drinking the least as always.

Morning's light comes and you all blearily get up from the table where you spent most of the night and bid one another farewell and go your separate ways. Yuki spends much of the day keeping close to you and being very touchy-feely all of the sudden, but when Tetsuo comments on it she flushes red and keeps her distance. That's basically our armor and underlying outfit. Our armor is gray with white accents, and also has no fur. Over the torso piece we wear a typical mist flak jacket as seen in the pic.

We have dark hair in a spiked middle-length style. Our right arm's lower half is replaced by a skeletal hand, but is usually covered by a metal gauntlet with tubes running up into our shoulder.

Our sword is a curved bladed greatsword about our height with an extended guard where the chakra streams from to create our Buzzsaw.

Dude, that wind trick's not going to work a second time. A is going to be prepared for that, probably commission some kind of specific seal or something just to fight us. He's got the whole resources of the entire Kumogakure now, after all.

As for speeches, give it when everyone's sober:
"Now both Kumogakure and Konohagakure, and soon, all the other Hidden Villages, will know that the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist are back, that Kirigakure cannot be pushed around anymore.

Your team-mates are overjoyed to be a part of the Seven Swordsmen and as you get off the dock you see something that warms your heart. A massive statue in the middle of the village, right in the courtyard in front of the Mizukage's office, with seven non-descript swords standing crossed over one another with the words, "Strength of Steel, Bond of Brothers. Always Remember the Mist's Seven Swords."

Shinobi are not at all forbidden to have children or be in relationships, I'm pretty sure the entire cast we know about with a few exceptions were shinobi. Sakura's mom is a housewife.

As soon as someone sees you they call out, "Look! It's the Swordsmen!" People literally drop what they're doing for a chance to see you all and cheer, "You're the hope of the village!" you hear from the crowds, "I wanna grow up to be just like you guys!" a little boy calls out and a little girl calls out, "I wanna be like Yuki-san! I wanna be a hero too!" The atmosphere of the Hidden Mist has done a total 180, people used to fear the Swordsmen as executors of the mad Kage's wishes. Now you are heralding a new beginning for the Mist on the world stage. The death of the Raikage at your hands sent a loud message to the world, the Mist wasn't just a weak little village cowering in the corner, they were a power of their own.

She laughs and cries at the same time, her hopes realized as she picks up a little girl and hugs her close, the girl smiling wider than ever before. Even Mangetsu had a few kids with straw painted white to be like his hair coming up to hug his leg.

Just because I was trying to think how, thematically earth could beat water, like how we did with the Raikage; I imagine earth natured chakra could propagate through a water jutsu, absorbing it and turning to mud that adds more weight and power to the overwhelming earth jutsu. Considering how powerful wind jutsu cuts chakra paths, and that it is probably the nature of of earth jutsu to bludgeon and crush, perhaps the most powerful earth jutsu petrify their target on contact, so the earth chidori, or technique like we did to the Third, would be a punch that just makes a weaker enemy crumble, while a powerful water natured foe would find a chunk knocked out of them that's leaking mud, as the earth chakra converts theirs.

Yes, I think I have, disclosed as follows.

Each team-mate is assigned a single action as their job in the Massacre. When they perform this role they add a "point" to the Massacre Pool. At any time a person can cash in on the pool to give them that many automatic successes on their next role. However, the user of this ability has to pay an amount of Determination equal to their successes, and cannot roll in addition to the auto successes.
    >> Anonymous 09/28/11(Wed)04:26 No.16451120
    >>16451100
Without a method to restore Determination, this is an extremely draining technique.
Also, it doesn't sound like it could be used on upper-middle chuunin to jonin, considering the number of dice they would have available to them and the statistical likelihood of successes.
    >> OP 09/28/11(Wed)04:31 No.16451158
    >>16451120
Which also reminds me, we need to figure out IF we do want to restore Determination mid battle.

I toyed with the idea of a Nindou, or Ninja Way, system where you state what your Ninja Way was and what things could happen that would fulfill that, which in turn restore Dedication.

However, it seems like either a ham-handed way to enforce roleplaying, or an easy avenue for power gaming.
    >> Anonymous 09/28/11(Wed)04:32 No.16451161
    >>16451120
Yeah since it costs determination for each success gained it'd be more efficient to just roll the attack. My suggestion is that you pay for the successes as you described with a pool and everything, but you can only add your rank in successes to your roll. That keeps it from being a death countdown but its still pretty scary to unleash.

Or if that's too much, base the number of successes you can draw upon off a specialized skill (like say 7 swordsman tactics) instead of rank.

Yeah, I understand the concern for abuse, but it does also make sense from a dramatic perspective that if a character either pulls off something that he believes in, or that something that he believes in is threatened, that he would get more determined.
Some kind of mechanic for it would be nice, but the only ones I can think of feel too clunky.

Ok. Say that we're in mid battle. Four of the members have fulfilled their roles in the massacre so we have a pool of 4. Shimaru is attacking an enemy that he can't pin down for whatever reason and needs some help on the roll.

Version 1: He blows 4 determination to get 4 auto successes to his attack and rolls 7 success with no 1's giving him a total of 11, which manages to catch the opponents 9 defense.

Version 2: Shimaru spends 2 determination in order to get 2 successes from the pool. He can't spend more because he is capped at his skill of 2 in 7 swordsmen tactics (a skill made just for this ability a better name would be teamwork). This gives him 9 successes as opposed to 11.

    Different guy but...

In FATE aspects are statements about the character. They're usually a short phrase or sentence like "I will join the seven swordsmen!." Whenever a situation comes up where that aspect would be problematic or cause dramatic tension the character receives a fate point which can be spent to give a bonus to rolls or make rerolls. An example in game would be the scene where we had to choose between Kisame and the village. In that moment we would have received a fate point for deciding to stay in the village and join the seven swords.

I think for this system though, gaining a point after a critical success fits better.

Oh god. Not that we need to use this, but it is too much not to share.
During personal time with Yuki: Looking at your right hand, "You know, I hadn't thought about it this way before," moving closer to Yuki, looking deeply in her eyes "but you are already a part of me." -> kissy kissy time.
On a serious note, that is one hell of a connection, and we are rather freakish now, but she would be the most accepting of our true appearance.

Oh! Ok, Spirit of the Century uses something like that, I think. Is it based on FATE? I really like that idea because it encourages roleplaying with rollplaying rewards. I really would like to impliment it, and maybe we could kill two birds with one stone...

And use points gained for that stuff to help with feints and evasions? That's a bit of a stretch, but anyone else think this has any merit?

Yes, SotC is FATE 3.0's origin. FATE is the catchall name for the original and all the variants out there (and there are a lot).

That sounds amazingly like Burning Wheel's Beliefs system.

    >>16451277
Now you just need to determine how much Determination gets refreshed, and if you want to factor in how many 1's were also rolled.
Like, 1 Determination for a Critical Success, and another 1 Determination for every 2 1's that are rolled. This would be when this music starts playing as you burn those Determination points into Extra Effects: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjjkHg5FOhk

I think it does. Maybe in keeping with the rank system you have set up, you can start with your Genin ninja way, then when you go up to Chunin you gain an expansion to your ninja way called 'definition.'

I think an example will work better here than me trying to explain. Let's take Naruto. His Genin ninja way would be "I never take back my words." His Chunin definition would be "I will never abandon my friends" and his Jounin definition would be "I stop the Shinobi cycle of hate."

I'm all for these point being useful for feints and what not. Maybe even some sort of surge of power mechanic when your way of life is on the line (Jiraiya and Rock lee come to mind).

Exactly! I kinda wanna use it like Hero Points from Mutants and Masterminds, but earn them like the FATE system or Wheel of Fate. I really like that origin.

Perks could also be used to harness and improve these points. But maybe we should just use the Determination system and just allow them to be used in more ways, giving more options, and thus demanding more economic use of them?

We can gain them by following our Nindo, we can use them on extra effects as now, and we can also use them for stunting (ala M&M) to do things we don't normally do on the fly.

Plus it would make for a super badass battle when we're fighting our exact opposite, and we're both burning through determination like motherfuckers as we scream political and moral discourse at each other.

This obviously needs to be decided by a group consensus, but I'd suggest:

Nindou: "A shinobi must always strive for professionalism."
Chunin Refinement: "I have been called an honest man."
Jounin Refinement: "A shinobi must have faith in his village and his comrades."
    >> Anonymous 09/28/11(Wed)05:20 No.16451465
    >>16451413
Genin Shinobi Way: A true shinobi is a Professional.
Chuunin Definition: I am an Honest Man.
Jonin Definition: I will help to make Kirigakure a Village to be proud of again.

Hmm, it makes sense but that pushes Determination further into godstat territory. It's damn tempting to take as it is, if we base more of the point economy on it, it'll easily become a no brainer.
    >> OP 09/28/11(Wed)05:25 No.16451498

That is very true...perhaps I could remove Determination as a scalable stat and instead give everyone a default number, like 3. Then you can still add the bonus increase from when you put a skill to 5, which really is a show of dedication, and I cut the starting points by 5 for Genin, Chunin, and Jonin characters.

I personally don't like these things for roleplaying a character as one player (which I presume is the normal assumption for your system) since it artificially pressures you to make certain decisions, but I do think it is suited to community roleplaying, since it structures the character's personality.
My preferred method is a 'gimme' system where you just tell the GM you want a gimme, (there should be some resitriction on how many you can take at once, and maybe how often) and in this system the gimme might be a point of determination or chakra or a success or something -- but the GM gets a gimme too, which he might use to say, okay you get your death blow in on their captain but now the reinforcements are here, or the lieutenant spends one on an attack against you in revenge. It's just a method of letting the GM know hey this really matters to my character and he is trying his hardest, without it being too touchy feely, freestyley, but the GM can just say fuck you and have the enemy use it on his defense against your attack. I can imagine the GM taking gimme's against a player as well, were the player would get one in return. I don't think this is such a great method for community play though. In fact, now I don't know why I wrote this out, I guess I just felt like sharing I system that was bumping around my head.

Yes. Do not make determination buyable. All PCs should have great determination, that's why they are PCs and not mooks! Have some Feat that gives a bonus point if you really must.

The hero point system in Mutants and Masterminds works just like this. Whenever you, the GM, trump the players with Fiat, fudge dice, whatever, you give them a hero point for complications.

I think it's a system that gives a huge feeling of fairness and reduces the sensation of railroading.
    >> OP 09/28/11(Wed)05:31 No.16451537
    >>16451515
Alright, I think I can agree with this as well.

From this point onwards, Determination will no longer be purchasable from character creation. If you want to increase it with your Skill Mastery Bonus, that's fine, because that will be so rare that it's really not going to unbalance things, and it's available to everyone, and it's taking a hit to your other more frequently used areas.

    Sounds good to everyone?

Maybe keep the +1 per rank up thing though. Yeah there definitely needs to be a feat to start with a higher determination and then a perk that can add to it. Instead of just excising it, is there anything we can put in its place that would make sense?

    Hmm....a few choices.

Awareness. It removes the need for Genjutsu for all but personable people and Genjutsu specialists. This also makes for a dedicated sensor stat.

    An interpersonal stat.

Or maybe a melee skill stat to tell skill apart from strength?

The vote is for normalizing determination for PC's, right? What I understand this as saying is 'being more determined than your teammates isn't a valid archetype, you are all determined.' So why let it change later with stat ups and perks? The new system you are working on can give determination right? I think that should be what fuels it. Although this goes back to my dislike of, I guess I could say the FATE system, but I don't really know it, so I will refrain, but that style where you start trying to bullshit all your actions into fitting into this sentence you said about yourself.
